Pregnancy after miscarriage

Hello,

I just found out I’m pregnant again (very early days, 4w today). I had a mmc back in April which was diagnosed at almost 12 weeks but baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks and then I fell pregnant again but had a natural mc at 5+5.
This time I am taking progesterone pessaries and aspirin. Anyone else pregnant after a loss? I’m so scared about mmc but trying to relax as much as possible.

@OnceUponAThread AMAZING! So so so pleased for you! Xxx

Amalea · 23/11/2021 19:10

Thanks @itssquidstella & @Onebabyandamadcat - so true, and ironic that hope can hurt more than just knowing! @Onebabyandamadcat will be thinking of you and your scan on Friday - wishing for a good outcome for you and that brings you what you need. Today I called up Tommy’s helpline and found it so incredibly helpful - understandably she wasn’t able to say how likely miscarriage was for me, but she properly listened and responded to explain all the different factors in a way that was relatable and helped me feel more informed and empowered about the whole thing. For me, a world apart from information given at EPU and would definitely recommend.

Amalea · 23/11/2021 19:25

Just to say a massive thanks to all on this thread - I've never really joined one before but everyone sharing stories and seeing all the support has made the world of difference. Although its I'm sure we'd prefer not to be here - not being alone means so much xx

Loulou237 · 24/11/2021 07:48

Hi @Amalea welcome to the thread, I know it’s not the best of reasons to all be together but yes it’s amazing we all have each other and all these ladies are so nice! Xx

Is anybody thinking of asking for progesterone on the back of today’s updated nice guidance?

I have bled twice this pregnancy light and only for a day each but I’m now 12 weeks (scan Monday) and not sure if it’s too late and to leave it or to fight for it.... The guidance recommends progesterone up the the 16th week from the start of bleeding in early pregnancy. The cause of low progesterone in the first 12 weeks is a corpus luteum defect but after 12 weeks it’s different (suboptimal placental production of progesterone). Now I’m 12 weeks I can’t figure out if it’s still fully recommended or not but think it possibly is... although I’m not bleeding and haven’t for over 2 weeks.

My midwife doesn’t know and I can’t face going back to the EPU, may call my GP tomorrow but I’m guessing they’ll have no idea if my midwife doesn’t!

Oti21 · 24/11/2021 15:51

@OnceUponAThread that’s great news 🙂

Onebabyandamadcat · 24/11/2021 19:40

@Oti21 I called my GP first thing this morning. But we're in Scotland so NICE don't count. GP said she wasn't comfortable prescribing it without EPUs say so. If I have a heartbeat on Friday I'm going to push for it or for a substantial, fact based answer as to why not. I'm still bleeding 24 days and counting. Not really any worse or better so no idea if it's a miscarriage or low hormones but surely it can't hurt?

Oti21 · 24/11/2021 20:16

Definitely can’t hurt! I phoned my EPU who said they only got the guidance this morning too with no real prior warning. They don’t have the progesterone recommended by nice but asked to scan me tomorrow and are going to see if they can get it in the meantime. She was very apologetic about making me come in but I’m very pleased about the extra scan!

Could you call your EPU and ask in advance of your scan? I really hope you can get it. It’s difficult knowing there’s something that may help but isn’t yet fully accessible. xx

Definitely ask the EPU about it when you scan. I'll be thinking of you on Friday. X

I was prescribed cyclogest after my second miscarriage as per advice from the consultant. He wouldn't take me on as a patient for further investigations but said there's no harm in trying progesterone even though the evidence it would be helpful in my situation is weak. His treatment advice letter said to take it for 6 weeks from first positive test, but the prescription I got from the GP on the back of that letter took me to 12 weeks.

Honestly though, I think the aspirin has helped me more. Neither of my miscarriages bled out naturally soon after the pregnancy ended, first one took 3 weeks for my body to start the process, and the second one was a missed miscarriage that I had surgical management for so as to not drag it out for weeks, and from my understanding progesterone is what sustains the lining of the womb and maintains that condition, and bleeding in pregnancy is a sign of insufficient progesterone. So I don't think that's what my miscarriages were caused by.

Oti21 · 24/11/2021 21:40

I’m not sure if low progesterone caused my miscarriage either and this pregnancy is so different. The more I think about my first pregnancy I wonder if the baby had a chromosomal abnormality but I’ve had very bad loose bowels with both (told that can be a sign of low progesterone) and I also bled for weeks last time.

As this new guidance says to take to 16 weeks I just can’t stop thinking what if I didn’t ask/take it. I was almost expecting to be told that as I’d got to 12 weeks they wouldn’t give me it now.

Have you stopped taking it now then @GinnyBee?

GinnyBee · 24/11/2021 21:46

Yes, I'm not taking it anymore. Stopped around 12-13 weeks or so, can't remember exactly. Whenever the pack ran out. I've actually just checked my patient access app and the prescription is still there so I could have ordered more of it, but as the consultant only advised me to take it for 6 weeks and I took it for 8 anyway I figured that must be good enough. It's been 3ish weeks that I've not been using it and haven't had any bleeding or spotting at all.

Onebabyandamadcat · 25/11/2021 06:13

I'll definitely ask on Friday. The GP did say she'd be happy to prescribe it if EPU say it's ok so if there's a heartbeat I should be able to get it Friday afternoon. My last pregnancy was a missed miscarriage with a little bit of spotting being the thing that alerted me to a problem whereas this one has had spotting for so long so it's very different. I definitely think that it certainly couldn't hurt in my situation. On the other hand I'd be reluctant to take aspirin cause that might make me bleed more. It's such a confusing thing

Onebabyandamadcat · 25/11/2021 17:41

Sorry for such a downer here ladies but it's my scan tomorrow and I'm terrified. Today I've been bleeding a lot, more than I have been the past four weeks. Maybe I'm just going to miscarry in time to have it all confirmed tomorrow. Feeling utterly deflated and resigned to it. This is utterly shite.

Dprndje · 25/11/2021 17:57

Hi everyone I’ve just joined and have never posted on a forum before 👋

I don’t feel like I can talk to many people about my pregnancy anxiety so here i am and a lot of you guys sound exactly like me

I’m super early 4+1 today. I tested a few days ago And got a positive after getting the most sensitive boobs. I had an early MC last month and haven’t had a cycle in between. I can’t relax and am convinced it’s going to happen to me again 😭

Me boobs today are less tender and I don’t have any other symptoms. I have been advised to go to the doctors a week Monday if there is no bleeding this time.

At the point each hour feels like a bloody week 😫

OnceUponAThread · 25/11/2021 18:06

@Onebabyandamadcat - I'm so sorry. It's so stressful and unfair. Could you go for an emergency scan now?

So hard to know what to say. There's plenty of people who have success stories despite bleeding, so it might not be bad news. But also don't want to give false hope if that's just going to make things worse.

Is the blood red or brown?

Keep talking here if it helps! X

Loulou237 · 25/11/2021 18:11

@Onebabyandamadcat I’m so sorry this is happening to you. Just hang in there and hopefully you will have some concrete answers tomorrow. What time is your scan? Have you had any pain? Xxx

Onebabyandamadcat · 25/11/2021 18:20

The EPU is only open 9-6 and a scan tonight won't make any difference compared to a scan tomorrow so I'll just sit tight. It's bright red blood. No clots but lots of blood every time I go to the toilet, like down the bowl and about 2 inches on a pad over the course of the day. I've got a sore back but not crampy just sore. But it's so much blood that just isn't stopping. It's so unfair

OnceUponAThread · 25/11/2021 18:31

It's so so so unfair. I'm so sorry. You must be so stressed and worried. I'm hoping it stops ASAP.

I can't remember where you are on weeks?

Oti21 · 25/11/2021 19:08

So sorry @Onebabyandamadcat I hope you get some answers at your scan.

My EPU have agreed to give me progesterone so I hope they’re able to offer you something. Will be thinking of you tomorrow xx

Onebabyandamadcat · 25/11/2021 19:10

I should be 8+4 now. Morning sickness is here for sure and all day nausea is here too which feels doubly unfair. I can cope with puking all the time if I think there's a good outcome. Puking so much and also bleeding like this is just unfair. I've ordered wine with my shopping for tomorrow because if I'm getting bad news I'd like to at least drown my sorrows a bit. And good pads for the bleeding

Oti21 · 25/11/2021 19:18

👋🏻 and congratulations @Dprndje

Anxiety is totally normal but it has got easier to deal with (at least most days) as the weeks have gone on. Don’t worry too much about symptoms, I’ve had days were I’ve had them all and days when I’ve had none! x

susiebluebell · 25/11/2021 19:28

Hello all, just marking my place here as I'd love to read along. I'm about 6 weeks pregnant after 2 miscarriages - early days yet and such a mixture of feelings.

So sorry for what you're going through @Onebabyandamadcat I hope you get some answers soon x

SRLaycock · 25/11/2021 20:04

@Onebabyandamadcat Sending lots of love and positive thoughts...... let us know how your scan goes tomorrow. I have everything crossed for you xxx

Dprndje · 25/11/2021 20:20

Hi lovely thank you so much

That’s really good to know that symptoms come and go like that. I’m praying that morning sickness kicks in soon. Symptoms always make me feel better. My previous pregnancy was preemie and we had medical help. This month and last was complete amazing luck 🙏🙏🌈🥰

Thanks so much xxx
