Just found out today that pur local hospital only scan you once at 12 weeks, with my other two DDs I had 20 week scan and feel it is really important to get one so will have to go private (also would like to know the sex).

Haven't a clue where to start looking for one, the babyscanning place in glasgow where we got a 4D scan for DD2 only scan for nonmedical reasons i.e. they will not check the heart, spine, brain etc.

So anyone had a private scan?

which hospital?

katyjo · 30/11/2007 10:05

Hi sweetkitty
I've just been looking into this I'm 14 weeks and I've just had my one and only scan. The nuffield private hospital do one, its £150 tel no 0141 334 9441 and I also looked at babybond in park circus though it seems fairly similar to babyscanning. I got a 4d scan with ds, and although they say they don't check I remember the sonographer running through all his organs on the 2d scan and saying his heart, liver etc were all fine so I'm not sure what to do.

Let me know what you decide, what hospital are you booked into, I'm the Queen mum's due on 29/5/2007.

katyjo · 30/11/2007 10:07

That would be difficult, due may 2008!

meep · 30/11/2007 10:10

Healthcare Now in Stafford Street in Edinburgh did ours - we got a nuchal scan done and a 20 week scan - about the same price as the Nuffield - very nice in there!

Congrats on your pregnancy by the way!

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 10:10

i was at queen mums both times. with dd1 i got three scans plus an amnio and was told the sex
with dd2 i got four scans (two at my request) and was told the sex.
they said that unless youre wearing a yashmak they do tend to tell people if they want to know. it is your right after all to know what sex your baby is

katyjo · 30/11/2007 18:27

Was that a while ago Liesel, they only do one scan at QM now unless there are problems and don't tell you the sex.

gibberish · 30/11/2007 18:29

My sis had one done a few months ago. Will try to get in touch with her and ask her where she went.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:17

It was four months ago, they do tell you the sex if you ask and they will give you another scan if you have concerns

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:20

you only got one scan at 12 weeks in the Lothians.

and even if you needed another one they'd never tell you the sex.

if this pregnancy is viable and they don't do 20 week scans at RAH and tell you the sex i'm going to Healthcare Now in Edinburgh.

i've been to them for other stuff and they're great.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:25

RAH is fab expat. How are you?

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:31

i'm hanging in there, liesel, thanks for asking.

tuesday's the big day!

but a kind MNer is giving me a lift to the appointment so that's a huge boon to me.

Flibbertyjibbet · 30/11/2007 23:32

Yes its very important to have a 20 week scan - I had no idea that some areas don't do them. A close friend had nucal at 11 weeks, hosp scan at 12 weeks, nothing amiss at either. We are all still in shock at the anomalies that showed up at the 20 week ANOMALY scan 2 weeks ago.

btw I don't think you have 'a right to know' the sex of the baby. The scans are there to check its health and development and if the scanner can't see the genitals clearly then I hardly think you should request another scan just to check the sex. At our hospital they will not tell you unless you ask, and if the sex is not clear while they are doing the anomaly scan, then there is nothing for them to tell you.

And what on earth does a Yashmak have to do with it?

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:33

quite a few very big trusts don't do them here in Scotland, jibbet.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:36

Jibbet as I said it was the radiographer who said that. I personally had to know cause with DD1 I was out of it for a week so was glad I had found out sex beforehand. Did the same with DD2 in July this year

weeonion · 30/11/2007 23:40

katyjo - i went to healthcare now in edinburgh for my nuchal scan at 13 weeks and then to nuffield for 20 week scan. both cost about £150. happy with the service at both.
i think the 4d scans are more for the images as opposed to diagnostic.

i was at the princess royal in glasgow and ended up getting 3 scans alotogether due to concerns over dd - but the policy is only a dating one anytime from 12 - 18 weeks. we were told that they would not under any circumstance tell us the gender of the baby.

still that we have to pay for what is considered routine in other parts of scotland and south of the border.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:42

Ive never been keen on the Royal but lately Ive heard good things, I suppose with QM closing we have no alternative.

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:43

there are signs up EVERYWHERE in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary stating that they will not tell you the baby's gender for any reason.

Habbibu · 30/11/2007 23:44

It is crap, actually - esp as NHS Quality Improvement Scotland recommends 2 routine scans before 24 weeks www.nhshealthquality.org/nhsqis/1208.html
Ninewells in Dundee does 2 routinely (and are very nice about more where necessary), and will tell you the sex.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:45

theres signs up all over the QM as well but with DD1 at the amnio they asked if i wanted to know and then with DD2 (i had four scans) and at each one I asked if they could tell and they said "yes would you like me to tell you"

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:45

the excuse they give you in Edinburgh is that they don't have enough sonographers to offer an anomaly scan.

weeonion · 30/11/2007 23:47

when i complained to my mp/ head of midwifery services/ equlaity unti re disparity across scotland - i was told women in glasgow woudl get 2 scans when they were able to shut down the queen mums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

expatinscotland · 30/11/2007 23:48

then they'll come up with the not enough sonographers excuse, onion.

weeonion · 30/11/2007 23:50

same as the old excuse was that we couldnt have water deliveries/ births as the MW werent trained. now that they all have been - its back to the not enough staff reason!

littlelapenis · 30/11/2007 23:51

that's so weird, weeonion, when i had dd the PR was the only hosp where you did still get the 20 week scan. i was asked if i wanted two on the first appointment i ever had there. mind you, in the event i had about 20 scans, so there you go...

loucee · 30/11/2007 23:52

Sweetkitty - we had our 20 wks scan done at the Nuffield hospital, although ours cost £200 (this was back in the summer)

With DD we had the 20wk done at Healthcare Now but decided to go for the Nuffield this time as it's a Consultant performing the scan rather than a sonographer.
