Just found out today that pur local hospital only scan you once at 12 weeks, with my other two DDs I had 20 week scan and feel it is really important to get one so will have to go private (also would like to know the sex).

Haven't a clue where to start looking for one, the babyscanning place in glasgow where we got a 4D scan for DD2 only scan for nonmedical reasons i.e. they will not check the heart, spine, brain etc.

So anyone had a private scan?

sweetkitty - that must have been rubbish for you. Maybe my scary lady was moonlighting in your bit of Scotland! The lady at Healthcare now was very unscary and let me blub away even though it was making the picture a bit fuzzy

This is an interesting thread! I am in Dunfermline and have the midwife coming to see me in about an hour for my booking in appointment. This has certainly given me some questions to ask!

We went for a 10 week reassurance scan during the week to babybond in Glasgow - in and out in 10 minutes and came away with 5 photos. We couldn't get Livingston as they were fully booked but the service we did receive was very very good. I'll try for the Edinburgh place at St Andrew Square for any future private scans as it is closer.

There is a sonographer at Wishaw that isnt very nice - infact I put in an offical complaint about her 18 months ago when I had my m/c - she never actually told me that I was miscarrying - just that there was nothing there - then asked me to leave.

sweetkitty · 02/12/2007 15:48

Wishaw were actually lovely when I had the mc although I was just sent home to consider my options with a leaflet. I started mc-ing at home and phoned quite distressed on the Monday as the bleeding was v heavy and I was v weak to be told this was to be expected, I told her I was changing pads every 10 mintues and again told this was normal. When I went back for a follow up scan I was told this wasn't normal and I should have come in.

Is babybond in Glasgow different to babyscanning on Ingram Street?

So what I want is a detailed anatomical scan at 20 weeks and possibly told the sex in Glasgow if possible?

I'm in SW so got both the 12 week and the 20 week scan - I can't believe they could see the same things at both - my 12 week scan looks like a jellybean, at 20 weeks they could count the chambers of the heart, measure thigh bone length etc etc. If I hadn't been offered the 20wk one I would definitely have paid for it. We considered paying for a nuchal scan, didn't end up doing it, but the place that looked the best to me was the Nuffield, www.fetalimaging.co.uk/

Lordashley · 02/12/2007 20:52

I've had an early pregnancy scan and a nuchal fold scan at Healthcare Now in Edinburgh -they were excellent both times.

Seems the only way to get a 20 week scan in Edinburgh is to be designated "high risk". I had a high risk of Downs syndrome result after the nuchal, and went on to have an amnio at the ERI. The all clear was given following the amnio, but I now get a 20 week scan.

However, I was told if refused the amnio I would NOT get a 20 week scan on the NHS. WTF?

weewishyouamerryonion · 02/12/2007 23:43

sweetkitty - i reckon nuffield is yr only option fr glasgow then

expatinscotland · 03/12/2007 00:37

you could jump on a train and go to Edinburgh for one, especially if it works out to be £50 cheaper.

www.babybond.com/detailscan.html This is th eplace in Livvy

runnervt · 03/12/2007 08:29

I had a routine 20wk scan in Ayrshire about 2 years ago but I know that Lanarkshire and GGC don't offer them routinely at the mo which I think is terrible. When I get pg with dc2 I will definitely consider a private scan. A friend told me that she wanted hers done by a consultant (and paid more) in case there were anomalies found which sounds sensible to me.

sweetkitty · 03/12/2007 08:33

thanks well it looks like The Nuffield in Glasgow for £200 or Healthcare now in Edinburgh or Livingston for £150.

Luckily I have worked out that I will be 22 weeks in the middle of March and thats when DP gets his bonus

Sweetkitty, I go for 20wk anomaly scan tomorrow at healthcare now,Edinburgh, will let you know how they are.

katyjo · 04/12/2007 11:13

There is a place in Glasgow GCRM, seems to be a fertility clinic, says scans are done by consultants or sonographers (slightly cheaper) 0141 891 8749 .

I went to babyscanning last time but I did feel it was a bit of a gimic not a really medical service, so that's why I'm looking around this time.

This thread has been really interesting, I was really disappointed when I had my 12 week scan this time and was told that they had stopped the cubs screening (nuchal fold etc) due to the lack of sonographers, they had only just started it 2 years ago when I had my first son. I liked to justify to myself that although we didn't get a 20 week scan the nuchal fold test almost made up for it, now we don't even get that.

I agree with you weeonion it makes me so angry to think we are paying for a service that others are getting for free, we pay the same taxes, it does seem right.

I am going to try and complain, see how far I get, I don't expect it will help me but they should really sort something out.

I'm worrying that I should have opted to go to PR, I had an ok time at QM but not great but its better the devil you know I guess.

Good luck with scan today Jaq39!
Let me know what you decide sweetkitty.

jaq39 · 04/12/2007 14:28

Hi all, had my twenty week scan today and everything was perfect with the baby, thank goodness.
Ive been worrying last few weeks that there wasnt a lot of movement and getting myself in a blind panic!
Apparently I have a low lying placenta, which she said not to worry about at the moment as it can move. she reccommended another scan at 34 weeks so looks like healthservice will have to fork out for a scan after all!!
Anyway, sweetkitty, healthcare now was freindly and I felt very comfortable.
Grudged paying for the scan though, in saying that I did get roped in to getting the dvd for an extra £15 - £165 in total with four photos, dvd and two letters with results, one for midwife one for you

katyjo · 04/12/2007 16:27

That's excellent Jaq, so it was useful for yours and baby's safety. Seems to me if it was necessary for medical reasons you should get a refund, don't fancy your chances thoug!
Glad everything was well, a few weeks to go until I'm 20 weeks, so I'll keep worrying til then!

weewishyouamerryonion · 04/12/2007 17:13

jaq - congrats on teh scan. glad it was ok for you. its a relief isnt it - i remember bursting into tears and then realising how stressed i had been about it. try and relax and enjoy this pg. i wish i had done that more cause it really will fly by ( as you already know with yr other ones!!)

katy - yep - i was on an angry roll this time last year about the whole scan thing.
I have heard really good things about qm though!
