Just found out today that pur local hospital only scan you once at 12 weeks, with my other two DDs I had 20 week scan and feel it is really important to get one so will have to go private (also would like to know the sex).

Haven't a clue where to start looking for one, the babyscanning place in glasgow where we got a 4D scan for DD2 only scan for nonmedical reasons i.e. they will not check the heart, spine, brain etc.

So anyone had a private scan?

in fact, the QM wouldn't even give me a heartbeat scan, which the PR said was just utterly cruel of them under my (shitty) circumstances. tis aitch, btw. you hang in there expat.

LieselVentouse · 30/11/2007 23:54

why the f* did they not do the heartbeat scan???

littlelapenis · 01/12/2007 00:00

because having told me it was my third ectopic and told me to come in for methotrexate, i made them give me another scan and they thought they saw something. got a couple of nurses to look at it and yes, they decided that there looked to be a foetal sac there despite my dismal hcg results.
so i asked if i could come back for a heartbeat scan in a few days and they said no i'd have to wait 8 weeks for my 12 week scan just like everyone else. phoned the PRM when i got home, spoke to a lovely doc (the head of the whole place as it turned out) and he said that was shitty and cruel and i'd to come and see him.
the QM were LIVID when i swapped hospitals.

LieselVentouse · 01/12/2007 00:04

shocking. I do like the QM though and its a bloody disgrace that theyre closing it down

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/12/2007 00:09

really? why? it's old and done-in.

LieselVentouse · 01/12/2007 00:10

sorry, i should re-phrase that, I think the folk at the QM are worth their weight in gold.

weeonion · 01/12/2007 00:14

i got all my support for bf from QM so agree on that point but as for antenatal care - i was v v happy with PR. i saw the same mw every appt, saw my consultant every other visit and both of them came up to postnatal wards to say hello.

still doesnt get away from the fact that they cant / wont offer the minimum standard of scans as part of protocol.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/12/2007 00:16

true, some of them are. the epu were good-ish with me, and the bfing specialists very kind. but they're still going to be working in the nhs and will no doubt go and up the standard elsewhere.
there's still a lot of crap in glasgow about the different hospitals, rivalries about who trained where etc. well tough, theyr'e all working for the same boss.
there are bits falling off the QM building, you know. my mum's involved in the health service, apparently the bit that fell off would have killed someone under it. fortunately there was no-one in the car park at the time.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/12/2007 00:17

but who else offers the 20 week scan, weeonion? the QM doesn't. does the SG?

weeonion · 01/12/2007 00:20

pcba - as far as i know - none of the glasgow ones do. i meant that across scotland - there is such a difference in what is offered. head out of the GG&C boundaries and things are different - til you hit the lothians of course.

loucee · 01/12/2007 00:23

I'm in South Lanarkshire and don't get the 20 wk scan. I don't know any areas up here that do?

weeonion · 01/12/2007 00:25

around forthvalley do, the highlands did but maybe now that they have amalgamated they wont, tayside did and shetland did as well.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/12/2007 00:37

it's me again, weeonion, aitch. as i say my mum's involved in that side of things and she and Mathers both say that the sonograms are of such high quality that now that you can see at 12 weeks what you would previously ahve seen at 20 weeks.
say for example the nuchal, which you don't get at the PRM... well you do get it, it's one of the things the sonographer checks but they don't do the accompanying blood test. but if there was anythingn worrying in the 12 week you'd be flagged for an anomaly scan anyway.

LieselVentouse · 01/12/2007 00:39

i got the anomaly scans both times - but thats cause Im an old fart or as they said "elderly prim" BASTARDS

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 01/12/2007 00:45

i wonder if that's why i got one as well, liesel? at my first appointment they just said 'and will you be wanting the anomaly scan' and i said yes and they ticked the box.

KristinaM · 01/12/2007 00:50

I got them at QMMH 4 years ago and PRM 2 1/2 years ago. and they told me the sex

expatinscotland · 01/12/2007 00:59

if this one makes it, i want to, for ONCE, know the sex.

bet i can talk my mum round to paying for it.

essanel · 01/12/2007 00:59

hi, i'm in fife and i got 12 + 20 wk scan (also further growth scan at 34 wks) to learn that 20 wk not given routinely....they also do not recommend giving sex of baby which i believe arose from complaints re incorrect info - i know its a 50/50 shot but still.... bil was told that it was a girl but 5 mths later nephew was born!

meep · 01/12/2007 08:30

I think it's terrible that we don't get a routine 20 week scan. My SIL got a nuchal, 12 week and 20 week as routine in London! The first midwife I saw said that they are trying to change things in Edinburgh ......

geordiemacminxpie · 01/12/2007 08:38

I had mine at babybond in livvy - twas great.

sweetkitty · 01/12/2007 08:54

oh forgot I had asked this question, I am booked into Wishaw General but am hoping tto have a homebirth.

With DD2 we were between houses and living at my Dads and we got 2 scans at Ayrshire Central (which has now shut down and maternity has gone to Crosshouse) bitch of a sonographer was really evasive about the sex and because I was feeling so crap with the nightmare housemove DP paid for us to go to babyscanning in Glasgow but thats more just for seeing the baby. I more want a detailed anatomical scan.

What about placenta previa? Does it have any signs? Because I know if they pick up a low lying placenta on a 20 week scan they will rescan you to see if it's moved.

Knowing the sex is only a small part of it I want to know my baby is healthy. I would rather have a 20 week scan than a 12 week one.

Apparently next year they are going to start offering 20 week scans once they recruit some more sonographers. I'm in North Lanarkshire so Glasgow area easier for me.

expat - how are you doing btw? will be keeping everything crossed for Tuesday thats great you are getting a lift

I had a nuchal scan done just before I got my 12 week NHS scan. The scan woman was really snippy with me when she found out - I called her the scary lady! Not nice when it is your first baby and you are so excited seeing it at any scan!

geordiemacminxpie · 01/12/2007 08:58

SK, I'm in uddingston, had ds at Wishaw 6 months ago - great hospital. I had 3 early scans there due to previous m/c

sweetkitty · 01/12/2007 09:00

I felt a bit on Thursday when I had my scan at 8 weeks, they knew I was there because of a mc I told the woman she had scanned me in August, then they just sort of talked over me for a bit and I had to say so theres a heartbeat it looks OK they were like "yes" as if I was bothering them a bit then scanned me for another 5 minutes whilst I was blubbing.
