Ooh thanks for the link @tinydancingbean - I've just hired my maternity coat too. Looking forward to receiving and wearing it now!

YouMeandtheSpew · 23/09/2021 08:29

@tinydancingbean

Thanks so much for sharing! I managed to get away without a maternity coat last time because my second and third trimesters fell over spring/summer but with a Jan due date it’s going to be a necessity. But I really didn’t want to spend £100 on something I’ll wear for a matter of weeks. More sustainable too!

Anyone here planning reusable nappies? Just had my recommendations back from the nappy lady. They look super cute in gorgeous patterns, but wondered if anyone had any advice on these. I guess I should just order a couple of each recommendation and see what we get on with best before placing a bigger order?

I am! I have a bit of experience of them from a nanny job 15 years ago! Was pre folds and wraps but I loved them and I really love all the newer stuffed designs.

I have pre ordered a massive kit from the local nappy library… well worth looking up. It does have a fee and need reserving now! But I’m excited to try out and find my faves. I have also bought about 9 nappies in a sale they’re the all in two ones and stuffable pockets.

sociallydistained · 23/09/2021 19:17
@SouthwestSis I got it from www.bellesandbabes.co.uk/ - they rent out maternity clothes and kids clothes too. Coat arrived today and is like new and even have a reusable bag to return it i
Thanks for this I’m considering ordering a coat from here!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 23/09/2021 19:54

@sociallydistained thank you! Can I ask, would you pick a pre fold and a wrap over an all in one pocket? I like the idea of an all in one for ease, but just wondering if the wraps are meant to be better at all from your experience?

I'll think I'll order a trial of the ones that she recommended me. Pleasantly surprised that it looks a lot easier than I thought it would be!

sociallydistained · 24/09/2021 16:50

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 I actually have no experience with the pocket nappies at all, just pre folds but from what I’ve seen and read I love the idea of the pockets and that’s what I have mostly gone for when buying. In the nappy kit I’m renting from the nappy library though they will have all types in there so terries and pre-folds and I will get a good idea from that what I’ll prefer or if it’ll be a mix.

SouthwestSis · 24/09/2021 23:28

I am on the lookout for a nappy library near me as I'm also keen on reusables but apparently they are only more environmentally friendly if you don't tumble dry. I don't own a tumble dryer atm but friends who've had kids say they think I'll find it hard to get to baby's first birthday without one!
Hard also when we are expecting in January so less opportunity for drying outdoors but I'm going to try and make it work and aim to use mostly reusables!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 25/09/2021 00:43

@SouthwestSis we don't tumble dry here either. In the questionnaire to pair you with nappies, there are ones that're quicker drying - basically bamboo looked like the slowest drying nappy (and clothing). Most of the ones I was looking at aren't able to be tumble dried. I'm thinking of a heated airer in general maybe

sociallydistained · 25/09/2021 09:25

I have a tumble and use it once in a blue moon and mostly for towels. There’s lot of reusables that are quick drying but I feel I may use it once in a while

BobbleWobble1 · 25/09/2021 18:12

I looked at reusable nappies but DH was horrified and I knew it was a battle I wouldn't win!! I'm definitely looking at reusable breast pads and wipes for faces etc as I know they're souch better for the environment.

I think there was a link to a Facebook group a while ago. Could someone remind me of the details please as I didn't feel ready to join at the time Smile

Kayl23 · 25/09/2021 18:42

Just wondering if anyone knows what happens if you go into spontaneous labour if you have a c-section booked? I am going to be having a c-section but I'm really panicking that if I go into labour before my section date they will make me give birth naturally, because the section isn't for medical reasons currently

Tangfastic91 · 26/09/2021 07:41

While I love the idea of reusable nappies from an eco perspective, I'm nervous that there is going to be enough going on without having to properly stay on top of the washing. So I'm going to try and find an eco brand of disposables that works as a middle ground. I have boots version of the cheeky wipes and have ordered as much secondhand as possible so still trying to do my bit. So difficult to get the balance of not wrecking the environment but also not making things 10 times harder for yourself as a first timer. Maybe with second baby I'll be able to do more (if I ever do this again that is ha!)

thecapitalsunited · 26/09/2021 09:45

Another one who has thought about reusable nappies. I’ve used washable sanitary products for over a decade and don’t like the idea of sending all that plastic to landfill. The Nappy Lady suggested I start off with muslins before going to a two part system so I’ll try that knowing that muslins won’t be wasted if we don’t get on with that much washing.
DH is on board with at least giving it a go but some of his dad friends were very dismissive.

One thing I have tried to say to myself with everything is that I don’t want a fixed idea of what we will and won’t be doing as I don’t want to set myself up to feel like a failure. So I’m trying to treat things as we’ll try X but if that doesn’t work then never mind, we will do Y instead or even Z and be easy come, easy go about it. Not sure how successful it will be!

Candyfloss22 · 26/09/2021 10:03

I've been put off the idea of using reusable nappies, I work in a nursery and have used them by parents choice. I obviously know children will get rashes etc using any kind of nappies however I've often seen children with rashes, spots, and sores on the inside of their legs from rubbing of reusable nappies, hence why I have been put off them. I'm not sure why whether it's the brand of nappies or parents may not been changing them often enough (in a nursery we have to change a child's nappy every two hours) but they would often come in with sores which for me personally is quite upsetting to see. We had a child not wanting there nappy to be done and was a struggle to do as they were always so sore down below they didnt want anyone to do it, I didn't like seeing that child suffer just because their parents didn't want to use disposable nappies. If I was to change my mind I would make sure I would change them every couple of hours but then you would need to make sure you have loads of reusables and if they were to rub or cause and problems I would instantly stop using them.

SouthwestSis · 26/09/2021 10:11

Poor fitting nappies and inadequate changing can cause rashes and sores with any type of nappy, disposable or re-usable.

@thecapitalsunited how does it work using musins? How are they secured or is it just a particular method of folding/wrapping? I guess it's easier when babies are smaller and less mobile

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 26/09/2021 10:54

@SouthwestSis nappy lady recommended Muslins (Muslinz brand - more absorbable) to me also for newborn as they can be in them for as short as 6 weeks. It's just a folded Muslim inside a small wrap - the reviews on it were great so think we'll start on that also.

My friends have had horrific nappy rash on children in disposables, where they've had to get special ointment from the Drs as it was infected. They changed them regularly as well. I'm not sure what you can do to stop it happening in all cases

sociallydistained · 26/09/2021 12:18

I’m going to be using muslins for newborn stage also. They come with my set from the library and I can try other stuff as baby grows. Muslins look really easy if you get the fold right. I watched nappy ladies demo video on YouTube and it seems pretty easy. Then muslins are always handy to have around too!

Jonesy88 · 26/09/2021 12:45

Just catching up on the thread, it feels much more real now talking about nappies and finish dates.

I’m being lazier than most I think - plan on working to 17th Dec, taking A/L for the rest of 2021 then start Mat leave on 1st Jan at 36 weeks, having exactly a calendar year off. I am not the type to get bored and although I have a desk job/can work from home, my role has quite a lot of responsibility so I think it’ll be mutually beneficial to have a set date. Plus selfishly I want a chilled Christmas!

Nappies wise we’re looking into reusable, but at probably 6+ months when things have settled down a bit. Have people picked up the Emma’s diary packs from Argos? There’s a full pack of pampers nappies in one and Aldi wipes in the others, plus minis of sudocrem etc.

spttc · 26/09/2021 12:52

I Havnt been on here in ages! Hope all are well! 🤰🏻😁 is anyone taking low dose aspirin or have you spoken to your doctor about it. I'm taking a 6 hour flight next week and I'm fretting about blood clots, I know it can prevent that. Anyone any knowledge on it?

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 26/09/2021 15:08

@spttc I'm on low dose aspirin (75mg a day) for low Papp A. Midwife said safe to take, I'm on it til 36 weeks just to thin the blood a bit

spttc · 26/09/2021 15:16

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 yeh that's what I'm thinking maybe I should take it for a bit, thin the blood. Seems there's no risk to taking it anyway! Thanks 😊

EsseKey · 27/09/2021 08:09

Morning everyone!

@spttc so have you decided to go on your trip to New York?? how exciting!! :)
I am still debating if I want to go again for another trip to Italy before I am too big 🐋, but I have people coming to visit in Oct and November, so maybe I will just stay here! It just feels weird to think that I won't travel again until I have a baby with me...I don't know how I feel about it!

Regarding reusable nappies, I want to give it a try but I want to be flexible so I will get both reusable and disposables and then see how it goes! I wanted to get a set to try at the local nappy library before doing any purchase, but my partner is not really on board with it! He is already a bit reluctant to try the reusables, but he is willing to give it a try... but he really dislikes the idea of getting hired nappies so we'll see! I also find it super weird that someone like him, who is in horse poo and blood and other fluids most of the day (he is a horse vet!), feels so horrified by baby nappies ahahah he thinks he is going to wear gloves at every change 😂😂😂

we also went again to see some prams during the weekend, we have our eyes on two of them but can't decide which one will be best! The guys at the store advised to go to a baby show if we have the opportunity, there is a big one in London 22-24 Oct so we might go there as well and see what we can find!

expectinglittlebear · 27/09/2021 08:52

Morning everyone! Been a while since I have been on here too!

I think in terms of nappies we are going for the disposables to begin with, while we get to grips with everything and then make the move on to reusables as I like the idea of them! Just don't want to put too much pressure on myself when I am trying to get to grips with everything else haha!

Also, I finally got my first covid jab on Saturday! I was hesitating and on and off for months, but decided to get it a few weeks ago, but got my whooping cough jab on the 17th so had to leave it 7 days before I got my covid one! But I have just got into work this morning to find out my boss has tested positive over the weekend (he didn't feel great most of last week and had negative tests, and I was in relative close proximity to him), so he is now isolating for 10 days. So I am a bit nervous to be honest.. praying I don't get ill! I feel okay, just a bit achey, but I think thats side effects from the jab more than anything else as had negative LFTs.

@EsseKey yes we're here off to NYC on Saturday🇺🇸 🤩 we just thought good to get over there before the travel ban lifts and everyone in the uk & Europe go rushing over etc. I know 3 couples going to New York in November after the ban lifts so we're confident we've made the right decision to go now when it's less packed👌👌 like you said it's a babymoon 🥰 our last adventure pre baby. Get some American baby bits too in the outlets etc hopefully

We won't be doing reusable nappies either. Iv seen ones with reusable outside part and then disposable inserts that are biodegrable etc. I'd consider those. And I'll be opting for the most environmentally friendly disposable wipes and nappies I can find. I'm vegetarian, recycle etc etc so that's something eh 👌 can't do it all!
