Congrats on Covid Jab @expectinglittlebear 👌 very unfortunate about your boss. Fingers crossed you Havnt caught it! I need to arrange my whopping cough one, we have until 36 weeks for that don't we.

EsseKey · 27/09/2021 13:41

@spttc I hope you have fun in NY!!! 😍

What kind of nappies with disposable inserts have you found? I'm interested! I am all about compromise and flexibility, and honestly I believe it's better to do little but consistently rather than trying to go big with all reusable items etc and then finding it unsustainable for me! so I am happy to explore options :)

Also I am looking for some reliable sources that have looked at the overall impact of reusable nappies from an environmental perspective, does anyone have suggestions?! So many things that sound environmental friendly are actually the same or worse than their traditional/disposable counterparts (I have colleagues working specifically at this type of analysis for my company!) so I am interested in looking at this topic a bit closer 🤔

EsseKey · 27/09/2021 13:48

@expectinglittlebear well done with the COVID jab, I hope everything goes ok with you boss being positive etc!

I have got my whooping cough vaccine the day I had the 20wk scan, that one caused me a lot of side effects 😢 I never had a side effect from ANY vaccination, this one put me in bed for a couple of days, and a sore arm for almost 1 week! I don't want to scare anyone, just complaining a bit on my bad luck 🤭 happy to know that my baby will have all the antibodies I can give her for those first few months though! 🥰

@spttc have fun in NY!!

@EsseKey I read this when I looked into it to see and compare. I was horrified by the 5500 nappies going to landfill per child I saw somewhere else, didn't imagine it could be SO much. Anyway the studies are all at the bottom of it to compare
www.lauratweedale.com/blog/the-eco-stats-nappy-debate

I'll give the Muslinz a real go, they aren't much of a financial outlay and the wraps are super cute and have great reviews. We will be using disposable flushable inserts to catch 💩 though. I'll hold off buying the rest til I see what works best. I'm also def not getting a nappy bucket 🤮 and instead will get one of the large patterned hangable wet bags as they look much nicer and can go behind nursery door

spttc · 27/09/2021 14:17

@EsseKey the brand is kit and kin kitandkin.com - they have biodegradable disposable nappies, ones that are reusable with liners and reusable without liners too I think. So all the options. I saw them in boots here in Ireland, I'm sure they're in boots uk aswell. In terms of price they're maybe 2cent more than pampers so it's a win win really! No excuse to not use them!

Iv heard the whooping cough one is no fun 🙈 but that's for baby so first motherly duty I guess!

Tangfastic91 · 27/09/2021 15:26

Just to add a different perspective on whooping cough vaccine. I had zero side effects whatsoever. I've heard a good tip is to completely relax your arm when having it done. Not sure if it's tried and tested but no dead arm for me (unlike the covid jabs!). The midwife was saying that most people don't get side effects so long as they've had all the usual vaccines before hand, because we already have the antibodies (eg, the tetanus portion). Hopefully that's the same for most people :)

sociallydistained · 27/09/2021 16:37

The nurses said to contact them if any side effects as there shouldn’t be any aside from a sore arm 😬 I indeed had the sore arm for a full 24 hrs.

Is anyone going for a home birth as their goal? I was very into the idea before becoming pregnant it has always felt right to me but people saying it’s not a risk they’d take etc made me think and I just ruled it out as an option… then I started give birth like a feminist and an old friend contact me about her two home birth and how amazing it is so I am now reading everything I can and I think will mention at my next midwife appointment 😬 … my midwife didn’t even mention it as an option just asked what hospital i would be using but I am getting a new midwife from now one so I’ll see how she takes it.

Same here! Just had mine today, and just relaxed as much as possible. TBH I'd almost forgotten about it until reading this post 😂 completely painless, no sore arm or any other side effects (and I couldn't lift my arm after Pfizer #1)
thecapitalsunited · 27/09/2021 16:54

I had my whooping cough jab this morning - into an arm which was already tender from my flu jab on Saturday! I found the flu jab made me a lot more tired compared to the previous times I've had it. Usually I just breeze through jabs with no side effects. Even when I had a top up MMR a few years ago I didn't have any side effects. The nurse who did the jab told me to keep hydrated.

@sociallydistained I really wanted to have a home birth but my high BMI rules it out. Attitude to risk definitely depends on the individual so I'd have a look at what the exact chances of various problems occurring are and compare to a hospital birth and make the decision that is best for you not for your friends and relatives.

spttc · 27/09/2021 17:18

@Tangfastic91 @CityGirlintheCountry that's great re whooping cough vaccine. It's funny tho my first Covid Jab hurt like 8/10 pain, during the actual injection and arm sore for days after, my 2nd was painless, nothing. I didn't even know she had done it. I said it to the injector on the 2nd I said wow that was totally painless I didn't even feel it....she said it's down to the injector and not the vaccine, if you have someone not as experienced it hurts more. My first was a younger girl, my 2nd was a retired nurse. So very experienced clearly.

@sociallydistained my sister in law has had 2 home births and really rates them over hospital (she had her first in hospital). She says it's so much better etc etc Honestly I'd be too afraid I think. I also don't think I will mind the hospital birth either. I think everyone is different. Iv heard good things for sure and wouldn't rule it out

EsseKey · 27/09/2021 17:51

yeah reaction to vaccination is really subjective! I never had any side effect from vaccinations in my life (including both COVID jabs!), this time I was just unlucky! But nothing that was unexpected, reading the leaflet they left in my notes it's really 1/10 people experience what I had (headache, fever, sore arm,..) so I wasn't worried, I just felt like sh*t for a couple of days.

@spttc thanks! that brand always pops up in my instragram ads ahahah I didn't know they had the inserts option...I will look into that! I am just not sure that biodegradable actually means much, since if it goes to landfill then the biodegradation conditions are not really there...anyway, we still have to put something on our baby's butt at the end of the day so anything that is slightly better for the environment will do😅

@sociallydistained very personal choice to have a home birth, for me it has never been an option and I think I will keep it this way!
But yes I hear a lot of people that had good experiences with home birth!

spttc · 27/09/2021 20:01

@EsseKey yeh agreed on the biodegradable thing. Very often it's biodegrable in 200+ years 🙈😣 but figure the materials used in manufacture & if they are eventually burned etc must be better than plastics.... it's something! Just because it's not the BEST thing doesn't mean it's pointless. Iv had vegans inform me that being vegetarian isn't enough....I may aswell eat meat for every meal because I have Greek yogurt for breakfast 😏🙄 I so disagree with that attitude. I'm of the opinion do what you can....Eating meat 6 days a week is better than 7 etc. little things help 👌

sociallydistained · 28/09/2021 09:18

My choice for reusables is quite selfish as i just fell in love with the designs of them haha. Used them in my first nanny job and learned lots of eco friendly ways there but mostly it’s cause I adore them and don’t like disposables (which I have used for every other baby I’ve nannied for since - I’ve changed a lot of nappies!) the washing is gonna be a chore so hopefully I can get in a good routine! I think disposables will always be on hand for back up!

BobbleWobble1 · 28/09/2021 09:40

@sociallydistained I am considering a home birth this time. I had a pretty miserable first labour for lots of reasons so really want to explore the option. I have managed to get a birth planning appointment in November to discuss all the pros and cons. I'm not set on the idea by any means so I plan to ask lots of questions! I'm more than happy to pass on any information but obviously risk is very individual and I'm a second timer which I think is going to go both for and against me in this case!

Ooh Me informed. My risk is higher as a first timer but I’ve been doing my own research and feel myself still leaning that way.

A friend of mine had her first in hospital and didn’t have a good experience and her other two births at home which were wonderful and she feels sad about her first still. I know everyone is completely different and as I only plan on one (have a step child too) I don’t want to miss the opportunity.

expectinglittlebear · 29/09/2021 10:15

For the whooping cough vaccine, I didn't have many side effects at all. I was only just extra tired that evening, and had a bit of a dead arm for a day or so. That's all.

I would love a home birth, but I also am quite anxious as its my first, so I think I will be having the first in hospital with a pool etc. If all goes well and is an easy uncomplicated birth, then I will definitely be considering a home birth for my second in a few years time!

Also, has anybody else been getting headaches and the return of morning sickness at all? I was sick when I got to work on Monday, for the first time in like 6 or so weeks, and have felt nauseous and been sick a couple times since :( Also been getting headaches the past few days too, but I don't know if that is just tiredness (as the tiredness has returned as well), or if it is lack of hydration because of the sickness! Trying to drink plenty of water, and I have had a couple paracetamol but trying to avoid painkillers if possible. Oh the joys Sad

expectinglittlebear · 29/09/2021 10:20

Also, the insane hunger has returned.. I am having to eat something virtually every hour to subside the hunger and also subside the nausea.

It's like all my first trimester symptoms have reappeared at once!!

thecapitalsunited · 29/09/2021 12:06

@expectinglittlebear I've definitely been feeling tired and I'm back to taking a nap after lunch. On Sunday I slept for hours, completely conked out even though my DH busily hoovering and cleaning the bathroom and making a racket. I downloaded a water tracking app to my phone and I've been trying to make sure I drink about 3 litres of water a day, more if I work out. Fatigue was my only first trimester symptom so can't help with the others.

Has anyone else been finding the whole pregnancy experience a bit miserable? I feel so utterly ungrateful especially after 3.5 years of trying but I just don't like it. I don't like how baby kicks feel, I don't like that I can't bend down properly any more, I don't like that I get out of breathe easier and can't workout as much, I don't like feeling like a beached turtle when I try to get off the floor without using my abs and I don't like that it hurts my hip suddenly to sleep on my left side when I'm supposed to. I feel like I'm supposed to be enjoying it and that it's supposed to be a happy time but I just can't. It's not even like my pregnancy has been in any way hard so far!

CityGirlintheCountry · 29/09/2021 14:39

@thecapitalsunited I'm definitely feeling some of that! I'm 23w now, and am at that same point where I'm mostly annoyed at how I can't do the things I used to do. I was trying to put on socks the other day and had a mini meltdown because I couldn't reach my ankles. DP had a right laugh (while being suitably sympathetic - he'd be dead otherwise Wink)

and I've had NO other symptoms, so I've had a relatively easy pregnancy. I really shouldn't complain, but I do. So you're not alone :)

CityGirlintheCountry · 29/09/2021 14:40

@thecapitalsunited BTW love the beached turtle image. I've been referring to myself as a walrus (after we watched a blue planet episode). Cue "I am the Walrus" on repeat on Spotify in our house!

sociallydistained · 29/09/2021 14:48

I actually feel great at this point currently. 23 weeks. But everything is indeed harder. Trying to stay active but I need a lot more rest. I don’t feel sick at all though so for that I am greatful!

I have suddenly got rather big in the last week. Anyone else? 😳

spttc · 29/09/2021 15:22

Yeh I gotta say I'm loving being pregnant. Feeling good etc. I think I'm just feeling so happy & excited etc that I don't mind the little inconvenience here and there. Finding clothing a bit difficult, I think mentally just purchasing larger clothing is bothering me but I know it's not forever. Keep telling myself I'm fat 😂 my husband is like emmm no not fat, pregnant 😬😂

spttc · 29/09/2021 15:29

@sociallydistained yes. I look very pregnant today. Pretty much exactly the same size as you there 😂 I feel like it comes and goes, there's been quite a dramatic escalation tho

EsseKey · 29/09/2021 16:41

@thecapitalsunited sorry to hear you are feeling that way!!
To be honest I think that pregnancy is romanticized a lot and we are convinced that it has to be this magical beautiful enjoyable moment in life but as with everything I don't think it needs to be that way for everyone!! Personally I don't think that we are supposed to like it, if you don't it's ok and it doesn't mean that you are not happy to have a baby! I just hope you feel better soon :)
For me there have been some weeks (it was around wk 15-16-17) where I kept feeling like this whole pregnancy thing was extremely annoying. I think that most of it was because I was starting to tell people about the baby, but I still had some anxiety about having another miscarriage and I thought that I would feel the same way for the entire pregnancy. I remember thinking that people should not be excited for me because so many things can go wrong...Then you add the fact that I could not exercise properly (I am so easily out of breath!), I looked bigger but not obviously pregnant, clothes didn't fit... so yeah for a little bit I wasn't exactly enjoying the pregnancy, I was mostly neutral about the whole situation and just waiting for it to pass. Don't know if this makes sense?!?
but I have to admit that now I feel much better, I am physically ok, I can move and walk and exercise, baby movements are not the best when she kicks my bladder but at the same time when I don't feel her for some time I am missing it!
