Has anyone seen the article in the BBC about midwives making women giving birth wear face masks? I don't think it happens a lot but as long as you test negative for covid how can they make you wear one!

I've no issue with masks but during labour is a big ask.

LottSE20 · 14/05/2021 11:56

@Daffodil21 I’ve ordered mine and filled out the review to get the free gift - just waiting for it to be approved. I’m really pleased with it!

I’m getting on/off heartburn. I hate gaviscon but finding rennies does the trick.

biscuitcat · 14/05/2021 12:08

@Ready2020 I saw it, so awful, those poor women. I think I'm right in saying that it's totally against RCOG and NHS guidelines though? I struggle in a mask at the best of times, I'm quite claustrophobic, so there's no way I'd be able to keep one on in labour.

I think by the time we're all due I'd hope it would be a much different situation even to now though, as all adults (or almost all) will have been vaccinated so experiences like that just shouldn't happen - not that they ever should have of course. My main hope (maybe optimistic) is that DH won't need to wear one, as I want to be able to see his face properly, I find it so disconcerting when everyone is covered up.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 14/05/2021 13:20

Hello ladies.

Just a quick question. I have managed to book the nhs antenatal course with my trust and it covers "labour and coping" and "breastfeeding and baby". I had also booked the bump abs baby antenatal course but am thinking if the NHS ones are just as good I can cancel the bump and baby ones and get my refund.

Has anyone who has done both think that I could just do the NHS ones and get all I need to know (minus social aspect obviously) x

BertieBotts · 14/05/2021 16:49

It's going to vary so much by area. I think it's well worth having both, NCT tends to be better at breastfeeding info and info about different techniques to cope during birth whereas NHS can be quite brisk and this is what to expect, although can be really good in terms of XYZ is how we do things at our hospital, which is helpful in a totally different way. And the social side of NCT is likely to be quite important IME. But when I did bumps and babies (it was a drop in one when I did it) it was a lot more relaxed and more social than info based. You did get info, but most of it was the leaders bringing up a topic and then encouraging people to talk to each other so it didn't feel like a class as such, more like a workshop or more-structured coffee morning. They would correct anything that was glaringly wrong but mostly the idea was you learn from each others' experience. This was 13 years ago though so they might have changed the format!

I think the content will likely be different enough at both courses for you to get something out of each of them, I don't think it will feel redundant.

I've just had my 25 week midwife appointment on the phone which lasted a whole 10 mins haha. After getting off the phone I remembered I was meant to ask her about the glucose test. It literally hasn't been mentioned to me at all other than a piece of paper included in my notes at my first appointment stating what I was meant to eat in preparation for my 28 week blood test (I'm guessing this is the glucose test) - my question is, does everyone have the glucose test as shouldn't it have been mentioned to me by now ? I'm not seeing or speaking to my midwife until my 28 week appointment now so I'm guessing I'll have to ring them back and ask them about it ?

wimbler · 14/05/2021 18:31

@MM1993 not everyone has the glucose test. It’s based on risk factors eg weight, ethnicity, background. Some people are more predisposed to get it. As far as I understand, the bloods at 28 weeks can indicate if you might then need the glucose test or if you have high levels of glucose in your urine (which is checked at every face to face midwife appt) I had elevated glucose in my urine at my 28 week appt so I had to go back again this week for a recheck and it was fine. If glucose had been present again, I would have been referred for the glucose test.

You shouldn’t need to eat anything specific or avoid anything before your 28 week appointment. It’s standard for them to do a full blood count at that appointment as they are also checking your iron levels as anaemia is common in 3rd trimester

Ready2020 · 14/05/2021 19:19

I had to fast from midnight before my glucose blood test at 28 weeks. They stopped the drink test for us due to covid.

The blood test was also for antibodies and iron.

alittlexmasmagic · 14/05/2021 19:34

Hi everyone, decision made... I'm going for a Phizer jab tomorrow. My area is a huge Indian variant hotspot which makes me more nervous than any jab side effects.
On an even more positive note, I bought my first newborn baby item today. A pack of nappies... got to start somewhere 😂 x

Whatshouldbemyusername · 14/05/2021 19:38

@BertieBotts thank you! Just thinking I'm reading a lot and the bump and baby one is online but I feel like maybe I cancel it altogether and do the NHS one that's for my trust. Hmm will sleep on it. I have to cancel by Tuesday latest if I decide to cancel.

Also my baby cot bed was to be delivered today. I checked at 6 and it was "out for delivery" at 7:10 "delivered" and nothing has been delivered. The company and courier company are both closed till Monday! 🤦🏽‍♀️

Daffodil21 · 14/05/2021 19:59

@alittlexmasmagic I decided to go for mine too. I had the first of the Pfizer on Wednesday. Had a sore arm yesterday but otherwise ok! Congrats on buying some baby items!

HopefulB · 14/05/2021 20:15

Well done @alittlexmasmagic and @Daffodil21 for making the decision!

I’m starting to get concerned that there may not be vaccine available when I want to have it!!

alittlexmasmagic · 14/05/2021 20:18

Scrap that... doses left of Phizer at a walk-in, so dashed down and just had it xx

biscuitcat · 14/05/2021 20:52

Congratulations ladies on having your jabs! I hope you feel safer and more secure, I know I've found it immensely reassuring 🥰

lucyrp · 14/05/2021 23:16

I feel like I'm the only pregnant woman not worried about Covid... although I haven't been that worried about it before I was pregnant. Maybe I'm blessed to live in such a rural place that I don't need to be. Although I work with tourists every day 🤷🏼‍♀️

Smallbean27 · 15/05/2021 12:17

Just done the free online course from the baby academy. I'm a FTM and found it really useful and informative, would definitely recommend.

Daffodil21 · 15/05/2021 12:58

Thanks @Smallbean27 - I've just booked my place

OP posts:
Smallbean27 · 15/05/2021 14:07

@Daffodil21 no problem. I probably would have booked their full course, but I'm already booked on NCT x

Daffodil21 · 15/05/2021 22:35

Ladies I've just had a tiny speck of blood when wiping (tmi but mixed in with some gloopy looking discharge). Can this be normal (27 weeks?) or not..?!

OP posts:
Daffodil21 · 15/05/2021 22:55

Sorry for panic 🙈 called the ward and she said it sounds ok but to call again to get checked if there's anymore blood or pain

OP posts:
notinthestarsigns · 16/05/2021 07:48

Hope everything is ok @Daffodil21. I would always call and see what they say tbh. If anyone else here has been suffering from carpal tunnel/painful wrists and hands, I have started wearing the splint at night that I got given by the physio and it definitely helps. It is a bit irritating to have on but I haven’t woken up with numb hands or pins and needles once so definitely an improvement!

lucyrp · 16/05/2021 07:58

I had what I think was another bout of heartburn last night but not entirely sure. we had tea which was just a pasta bolognese with garlic bread and watched some tv on the sofa. I fell asleep on the sofa for a couple of hours and went up to bed. As soon as I lay down I had a tight burning feeling in my chest again which was worse if I lay on my right side. Cue lots of tossing and turning and I think I finally started falling asleep on my right side when I was woken in pain and had to rush to the loo I felt like I needed W number 2 but nothing happened only to turn around and throw up all of my tea 🧐 pain was still there but managed to prop myself up a bit and fall asleep. Still feeling a little fragile this morning but tried to remain calm last night incase it was a gallstone attack as that's how they always started. Unsure whether it was heartburn or my gallbladder playing up ...

Daffodil21 · 16/05/2021 09:05

Thanks @notinthestarsigns I'm still worried this morning tbh. I sent a pic to my friend (gross I know) and she said she thinks it looks like a mucus plug which is what I was worried about. Not quite sure what to do tbh.

@lucyrp that sounds horrible! I always find heartburn is so so much worse if laying on my right

OP posts:
Daffodil21 · 16/05/2021 09:25

@lucyrp I meant worse when I lay in my left! If you're worried though best to get checked x

OP posts:
lucyrp · 16/05/2021 09:30

@Daffodil21 I was looking it up and it says if you have heartburn you're better off laying on your left! Which did seem to be the case for me but I can't stay on my one side for very long at all at the moment I have to toss and turn every few minutes x
