150mg aspirin from ovulation?

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 12:11

Hi everyone, I just got a BFP yesterday after 2 losses last year (yet to have my rainbow baby, hoping for third time lucky). I am a nlrm weight but have PCOS which I take metformin for. My mum had 4 mcs before having me.

Due to not being able to be referred yet as I haven’t had enough losses, I took matters into my own hands and started taking 150mg of aspirin at ovulation stage and am still taking it now. I haven’t had any bleeding so far or any negative symptoms.

I did my research and chatted to some friends who had recurrent miscarriage, I read articles and also threads on here where others had been advised to take 150mg of aspirin to help with implantation from ovulation, and then to continue right through to 36 weeks.

However I just wanted to double check if anyone else is doing this or has been told to? If I make it far enough in this pregnancy to have a booking appointment I’m fully prepared to be told off by the midwife for taking it without being told to by a medical practitioner... but after 2 losses it’s a risk I’m willing to take to be honest to do everything I can to prevent it this time.

There’s NHS articles online saying there’s no risk to mum or baby so I feel like there’s no harm, but I do feel a bit ‘naughty.’

If anyone has any experience of this or any advice I’d love to hear from you. I just really want this pregnancy to work out ❤️ Thanks

Yep, me! I had 4 losses in the last 12 months and all tests and scans came back normal for both my partner and I.

After my latest loss in november I decided that on the next cycle I’d start aspirin. Figuring I had nothing to lose.

I took 150mg aspirin from 1dpo and got my bfp at 8dpo. So far things are going great. Better than they have done with any of my losses. Pregnancy test progression has been abasing, I had my 2-3 weeks on digital by 12dpo, and 3+ by 19dpo. I had an early scan at 5+4 and saw a heartbeat, something we’ve never been lucky enough to see with any of the lost pregnancies.
Another scan at 6+2 revealed perfect growth.
After my first scan the EPU also started me on 400mg daily cyclogest (progesterone). So I have 1 200mg pessary twice a day until 16 weeks.

My midwife is fully supportive of my decision to start myself on aspirin. I’d done plenty of research myself and wasn’t willing to just sit by and do nothing and potentially have another loss. I’m not sure I’ll ever know if it’s the aspirin that made the difference or whether this pregnancy would have just worked anyway, but I’m so glad I did it.

I’m nearly 7 weeks now, so still extremely early days and by no means out of the woods, and we’ll aware seeing a heartbeat doesn’t mean all will be ok, but as I said for me personally this is huge improvement.

I am older, at 38, and my bmi is 30 so classed as obese (although I’m only a size 12-14 so certainly don’t look or feel it).

Moominmiss · 05/02/2021 13:10

Just to add I’m obviously still taking the aspirin, and will continue to do so likely until the 3rd trimester; or unless I’m told it’s causing harm x

Miami81 · 05/02/2021 13:18

I did this after 2 miscarriages. I had a bleed in 3rd preg and had a scan at epu at 6wks + 5. All ok and I asked the midwife if I should stop the aspirin. She said and I quote, it won't be harmful and I'm not going to tell you to stop taking something that is potentially helping you.

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 13:23

Sorry to hear about your losses, thank you for sharing. Your story has given me so much relief, thank you! I felt exactly the same as you - I don’t want to just leave it and have another loss without making any changes.

How did you end up on progesterone if you don’t mind me asking? Did they suggest it?

This is something I’d be keen for too if it’s a factor in my previous losses but I guess I’ll need to wait until I have an early scan / booking appointment to talk about this.

Have you experienced any bleeding at all? In both my losses I started bleeding and then it all went wrong. My first loss was at 9 weeks but it stopped growing at 7 weeks 😔

Best of luck for your pregnancy this time! Sounds really promising xxxx

@Miami81 thank you that is good to know, did they ever find out why you had a bleed? How did the pregnancy go?

Xxx

@Cafeaulait27 I’m sorry for yours too, I meant to say that initially. Losses are truly heartbreaking and soul destroying.

As for the progesterone, I was sent for an early scan at the EPU (purely because of my recurrent losses), and while there they said they wanted to start me on progesterone.

When I was referred to a fertility specialist back in the summer and had all sorts of tests done, my progesterone levels were actually very good, so I wasn’t expecting to be put on progesterone. But they said it’s to give my body an extra boost and that even if my levels were good anyway, the extra won’t do any harm so I was all for trying it! Definitely worth asking for it at your next appointment.

I’ve not had any bleeding or spotting (touchwood!). Again, another thing that makes this pregnancy different to the others.

My first miscarriage was also at 9 weeks, but baby hadn’t grown beyond 6 weeks. I had spotting for a few weeks on and off before several scans revealed no growth in between and no heartbeat, befire I miscarried naturally at 9 weeks.

My subsequent losses were all around 6 weeks and started with bleeding.

I’m trying to be really positive this time , (because stressing is no good), without counting my chickens just yet. But it’s difficult not to positive about the differences so far. I have another early scan this weekend when I’ll hopefully see some growth again. I am fully prepared to have weekly scans if it’s what gets me through first trimester. The 4 losses I’ve been through have made my anxiety sky high and so anything I can do to ease it, even if it’s only for that moment, is worth it to me. So far I have another scan booked for 10 weeks, but am already thinking about booking another for between 8 and 9 weeks. If that’s something you’re able to do I’d recommend it. I know seeing things all ok on a scan only tells you that things are ok in that snapshot of a moment, but for me that’s better than not knowing at all.

Good luck with your pregnancy!! I have everything crossed for you xx

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 13:39

@Moominmiss I can’t imagine how hard it must’ve been for you going through those losses, so pleased things are going well for you this time.

I agree that it’s good to try to be positive - I’m trying to do that too. There is no need to worry yet. Sometimes if I feel too positive about the pregnancy I feel like I’m going to jinx it though 😔 but right now I feel so good and like things are going well (but I’m only 4
Weeks!)

That’s good to know about the progesterone, I will definitely ask if there’s no harm. Please keep me updated with how your pregnancy goes (if you want to) 😊

OP posts:
Moominmiss · 05/02/2021 13:46

I absolutely understand that feeling of being terrified of jinxing things by being too positive. I do have to remind myself every now and then to stay grounded and not get carried away. It feels too odd to imagine that this could actually work out.

Just know that nothing you do now will change the outcome, what will be will be, so my view is that I might as well try to make this a positive experience and enjoy it while I can. If this does turn out to be the one that sticks, then I want my memories of it to be as positive as possible!

I found out I was pregnant at 3+1 so this pregnancy already feels incredibly long which is why I’m trying to stay chilled as I know there’s a long way to go lol.

Of course I’ll keep you updated. I hope to be able to tell you of a positive outcome!

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 17:12

@Moominmiss sounds like you’re dealing with it all really well 😊

Time seems to stand still doesn’t it! I feel like I really want to get scanned to make sure everything looks good but I know I need to wait 2 weeks for that as I’m only 4 weeks now. My period was due today and no blood at all so I feel great hitting that little milestone. I think it’s great you’re having regular scans, are the EPU ping them for you or have you gone private for some?

I’m hoping due to my losses I can have some early scans at the EPU, but we’ll see. I’m trying not to think too far ahead but it’s hard isn’t it, I already googled ‘summer maternity clothes’ today 🤦‍♀️

Good luck with your upcoming scan and your pregnancy 😊 xx

OP posts:
Moominmiss · 05/02/2021 17:21

@Cafeaulait27 time really does stand still during early pregnancy! The wait from finding out until I could get scanned was torture. I was shaking like a leaf.

So my first scan at 5+4 was at the EPU, but once they’d seen a good strong heartbeat they discharged me.

So my 6+2 scan was a private one, and so will my one be this weekend, as well as the 10 week one I have booked. It’s a lot of money but so worth it for me.

Hopefully the EPU will be happy to give you at least one reassurance scan. I had been fully prepared to not see anything first time and have to go back. If the EPU do see you and you don’t see much straight away, please don’t panic though. I was told I was very lucky to see everything so early and that it’s quite usual to not see a heartbeat until 7 weeks.

Good luck to you too. Please update when you get a little further on! X

HungryHippo20 · 05/02/2021 17:35

I did the same as you, after two losses and some research I started taking 75mg a day. Told midwife at booking appointment and she didn't seem concerned. By 12 week scan I was told to double dose to 150mg a day because that's the new recommended dose and it's to do with my age (40!) so now I'm 35 weeks and convinced the aspirin has helped. I've been advised keep taking up til birth 👍🏻

kensue19 · 05/02/2021 17:39

After 4 miscarriages I was prescribed blood thinner injections to be taken up to 12 weeks, followed by 150mg aspirin up to week 32. Every doctor and midwife I've spoken to says the benefits 100% outweigh any risks and they've said they often recommend to women who haven't even had previous complications now. I hope it works out for you.

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 18:54

@Moominmiss completely understand you going for private scans, it’s probably something I’ll do too if I can and if I get that far. It’s so helpful for reassurance xx

@HungryHippo20 that’s great! Hopefully I won’t get told off then ☺️ Sorry to hear about your losses, but great to hear things are going well for you this time. It must’ve felt amazing to see your baby at the 12 week scan after going through the losses especially Xxx

I'm now 29 weeks, but I also followed the same medication for my now 3 year old.

summerhillgang · 05/02/2021 21:24

Hi there! I had a chemical years ago, but no losses. I am 38 and we were ttc for ages. I got on Levothyroxine and started taking 75mg aspirin at night, I got pregnant that month!

So I'm keeping up both during pregnancy... I was also a bit worried about taking aspirin but seems like it's safe and makes sense that it promotes good flow to the placenta and is a safe way to reduce inflammation in the body.
It's also derived naturally from white willow bark.

Thank god for aspirin eh! X

Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 22:31

@summerhillgang that’s great! Thank you for sharing. I got pregnant with this one my first month of trying after the last mc, and I do feel like the aspirin helped as I started taking it just after my last period ended.

How far along are you now? Glad to hear it’s going well xxx

OP posts:
Cafeaulait27 · 05/02/2021 22:31

@summerhillgang also I had no idea it came from bark! Amazing!

Summersun001 · 05/02/2021 23:30

Hi @Cafeaulait27!!

So grateful to you for starting this thread. I had an mc in December. First cycle of trying but I have also been taking aspirin since ovulation.

I haven’t had a BFP, and I don’t think we have been successful this month but I’m hoping we will soon! And I’m hoping the aspirin helps us. Please keep us updated with your pregnancy :) xx

Cafeaulait27 · 06/02/2021 09:04

@Summersun001 thank you, I will keep you updated! I’m sorry for your loss but I hope the aspirin helps you conceive again.

Also just to note to everyone - it’s best to take the aspirin with food to avoid the risk of stomach ulcer and also to take in the evening, so I take mine straight after dinner around 8pm xxx

Cafeaulait27 · 08/02/2021 15:40

@kensue19 thank you, it’s really reassuring to hear it’s been helpful for you. Good luck with your pregnancy 😊

Things seem to be going well for me so far, I’m getting more symptoms than I have with previous pregnancies and lots of white CM which i hope is promising. Last time I started to get brown discharge around 7 weeks which then ended up turning into a mc two weeks later. I’m anxious to make it past that milestone this time but time will tell. I’m still undecided on whether to have an early scan or just wait for the 12 week one.

So glad to hear all these positive aspirin stories, it gives me hope xx

Hi all,

How are all of your pregnancies going so far?
I'm sorry to hear of so many losses, I too have had 3. A miscarriage at 7 weeks, a PUL where I had to have methotrexate and then a chemical at 4+3 last month. I've spoke to my GP for further tests but with the pandemic it's going to be a while. So I done my research and took matters into my own hands. I've been taking 75mg aspirin daily since ovulation (last Thursday). It can't hurt to try right? I'm 31 this year and feel like my clock is ticking so I don't want to wait.
