Experiences with pregnancy after IUGR

Hi everyone,

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant with my second baby. With my first DD I measured small towards the end of pregnancy and ended up being induced at 37 weeks exactly due to IUGR.

At the moment my bump is measuring average but it was with DD at this stage too, so whilst this is good news I’m not taking it that baby will be average sized.

I wondered if anyone had any experiences they could share if you’ve had IUGR or a small baby then had another pregnancy?
I’ve not had the normal level of growth scans due to covid and my midwife hasn’t offered much advice/help!

Thank you Flowers

@Leodot never ever feel like you are making a fuss! They might do this every day but this is your baby and it’s their job to answer all your questions and reassure you. At 36 weeks there’s a good chance your baby would cope well with induction - depending on predicted weight and all the other factors - I had an induction with my daughter and she did ok with it, born 5lb at 37+6. It did nearly result in an ECMS but the process of going from induction to that is pretty well controlled usually - they wouldn’t let the baby get too distressed before deciding to go down that route. But it’s worth discussing all the options with your consultant.

All ok here, had some reduced movements over the weekend so having additional monitoring - then doctors will decide whether to wait until Friday for induction or not! Baby seems ok though.

Nosleepclub14 · 02/02/2021 13:49

@Leodot completely agree with corilee. Make sure you ask all your questions so you feel fully informed.
I had my daughter at 37+3, she was really tired when born after my induction but that could have been because of the pethadin and epidural I had! She was also a ventouse delivery. As Corilee said they keep such a close eye on you and baby to make sure they aren’t in any distress.

@Corilee2806 Hope you’re okay, and movements have been strong and consistent since the weekend. Keep us updated on your progress xx

Thanks @Nosleepclub14! I’m at the hospital now for induction! They moved it forward by 2 days in the end because of the reduced movements, but he seems fine, but honestly I’m ready for him to come now! Wish me luck, hoping it’s much quicker than it was first time round!

Nosleepclub14 · 03/02/2021 12:03

@Corilee2806 oh wow! Good luck, hope induction going quickly and smoothly!
Were you able to move hospitals so your other half can be with you on the ward?
Hopefully not long until cuddles and it’ll be all worthwhile!x

He’s here! Born at 5am this morning, all good and healthy and much smoother induction than last time! He’s 5lb 8 at just over 37 weeks, so a little bigger than predicted but still pretty tiny!

Thanks for all the support in this chat ladies, I’ve found it really helpful and look forward to hearing how everyone else does!

Corilee2806 · 04/02/2021 20:11

@Nosleepclub14 and yes we did change hospitals - it’s been so worthwhile, glad we did it!

Nosleepclub14 · 04/02/2021 23:04

@Corilee2806
Aww amazing! Huge congratulations and glad your induction was speedy and you were able to have your other half there too!
That’s a good weight! Hope you’re enjoying newborn cuddles, and your little girl loves baby when you bring him home x

Thanks all! We’re home and he’s doing really well - everything has felt much easier this time! Big sister loves him!

Hope everyone is doing ok! x

Hi !

My first was growth restricted form 32 weeks and then was induced at 37 weeks due to him showing signs of distress

My second born is 75th percentile and was healthy weight and had no issues

I think try follow things up but don’t be anxious hopefully all should be fine this time

LetMeBubble · 07/02/2021 11:11

Sorry just read the full thread lol!! Congrats !

Melskiski · 12/09/2021 05:04

Hello ladies,
I’m trying not to stress and would love to hear from others in my situation.

I’ve had my 28 week scan this week
and bubs is measuring in at the 8th percentile. What does this mean moving forward??

I’ve scans already scheduled for 2 weeks time but I can’t help feeling just so scared.
This is my second baby, first bubs measured completely average the whole time.

What am I in for?

Sceptre86 · 12/09/2021 10:00

I has IUGR and PPROM in my first pregnancy, dd was born 5lb 10oz. I then had a ds in my next pregnancy, PPROM happened again but no IUGR. He weighed 8lb 10oz. Third pregnancy and I had dd2 last week. This time no IUGR or PPROM and baby weighed 9lb 4oz

With dd1 we had reduced movements and placenta was failing. She had delayed physical developmental milestones. She is now on the 90th percentile for height and weight.

Melskiski · 12/09/2021 10:18

Sceptre86 - Thank you for your time and for sharing! It sounds like you have been through it all! I’m taking from what you have mentioned is that all your babies are ok?

Nosleepclub14 · 12/09/2021 10:29

@Melskiski
Hey, congratulations on your pregnancy!

Your hospital will probably do more regular scans for you to check baby is staying around the same weight centile and their measurements are growing rather than staying the same. They will also check your placenta in the scans to make sure that’s functioning as it should be.

It’s easy to say try not to stress, but you will because it’s your baby! Were all babies measurements in the same centile?
Keep an eye on baby movements to make sure they are in their normal pattern and as strong as they normally are too.

With my daughter I was induced at 37 weeks because she didn’t grow from week 35. She was 5lb 15 but she’s now 2.5 years and above average weight and height and on track with all milestones too. And my son who I was pregnant with when I started this thread, is now 8 months, crawling and pulling up on the sofa. I actually ended up having to take him to be weighed more frequently because by 6 weeks his weight was in 95th centile.

Nosleepclub14 I’m so happy to hear that your bubbas are doing well. Thank for taking time two update me with your experience.

It’s mostly the femur and head circumference that are both measuring 11 days off. Weight seems to be pretty close target.

It’s just thrown me! I’ve been getting so many strong kicks and everything has been fine. If I hadn’t have had the 28 week scan I would never of thought anything of it.

I guess all I can do is wait another 2 weeks to see what the next scan says… gaahhh

Corilee2806 · 12/09/2021 16:47

Hi @melskiski, this has just popped up in my notifications as I was on the thread at the beginning of this year! If you read back you’ll see my history, this happened with both my pregnancies, babies measuring below the 5th centile with lots of scans, monitoring and stress. I now have a 2.9 year old DD - she was tiny and stayed that way for a while and is still petite but absolutely full of beans, bright as a button and healthy as anything, and my DS is 7 months old and was born 5.5lbs at 37 weeks - to me, this didn’t seem that tiny but it was 4th centile apparently. Anyway now he’s 18lbs plus and tracking the 50th centile so absolutely no problems! I worried so much and at my final scan before I was induced my consultant said I probably just made small babies. There can be so many reasons for a baby being below the 10th centile which is the threshold for being monitored with scans etc - it is worrying and I know I worried a lot but I tried to tell myself it was good it had been picked up and I was in good hands.

Have you been given any possible reason why baby might be measuring small? It seems to happen a lot these days and in fact the scans can often be wrong! Whatever happens, there is a very strong likelihood you will be absolutely fine x

Nosleepclub14 · 12/09/2021 21:18

@Melskiski
The wait between scans is the worst!
As Corilee said scans can often be wrong. Mine were off by 8oz for my first and 1lb for my second. Also I was told at one of my scans that how the baby is laying can have an effect on how accurate the measurements they get are.

It’s good they’ve picked it up and can keep an eye on growth. Fingers crossed all goes well at next scan.

I had IUGR with DC2 he ended up arriving bigger than expected - 6lb although growth scans had predicted 5lb Max.
He is almost 5 now and is still a fair bit smaller than his peers, and there are a few developmental concerns currently being investigated.
I had DC3 2 years later, again bump measured consistently small throughout the pregnancy, but growth scans weren’t as concerning as with DC2. She ended up being born on her due date, at 7lb 13oz. I was never given a clear explanation as to the cause of the IUGR with DC2

loobylou44 · 12/09/2021 21:34

@Melskiski my eldest was a normal pregnancy until about 28 weeks when she was measuring on the 6th (I think) percentile for head circumference and weight. I was scanned weekly and went on to be induced at 37 weeks for IUGR. She was 4lb14oz born and was absolutely tiny. She's now 16 and very healthy.
My youngest was also monitored weekly for IUGR as she was on the 8th percentile. She was born at term and weighed 6lb8oz. She's now 15 and quite petite but otherwise very healthy.
The waiting is absolutely torture between scans but it'll all be worth it in the end.

Hello,

Recently been told that my baby is showing as below the 10th centile after my first growth scan at 32+6 weeks, went for a Doppler yesterday and was told everything is fine, got another growth scan next week to figure out what’s going on. At the first growth scan he measured at 1778g which is roughly 3.9lbs, based on them putting 1lb every two weeks is he going to be tiny at this rate? Very worried 😟

EllieJai44 · 21/07/2022 18:52

@CTMR I have my own thread I started yesterday based on baby measuring slightly smaller- I'm similar gestation as you and my baby has dropped in their percentiles so started at 50th percentile at 28 weeks and now at 10th percentile, which they don't like when they decrease- I have no idea what plans are as of yet except that I will speak to a consultant next Week and have another growth scan in 2 weeks.

If baby follows their own line and stays on the chart then they tend to not mind that so much- have you got anymore scans booked? It's hard to gauge off one scan- but if baby gains about a pound every 2 weeks then they would nearly 7lb ish at full term.
My baby is gaining just about 300g every 2 weeks currently so way under what they estimate

CTMR · 21/07/2022 19:16

Hi @EllieJai44,

yes I’m having a similar issue, I was measuring normal on my first fundal height measurement and then went down the week after, had a scan and it came back as below 10th centile. I’ve got a growth scan next Wednesday which will provide more information as to whether he’s growing or not. They’ve said to me that I categorically won’t be going over 37 weeks unless he jumps back up the scale by next week, which I’m not holding my breathe for. My movements have been fine, heartbeat has always been good and I’ve never had any issues in any of my other pregnancies! Have you had two scans then to know roughly what your baby is gaining per week?

EllieJai44 · 21/07/2022 19:25

@CTMR I've only had growth scans since 28 weeks, so had 3 in total now- I'm not having my fundal height measured due to BMI and also due to my previous 2 babies being smaller- so I've experienced similar with previous two babies but they slowed in growth towards end as opposed to this early on.

My consultant appointment got moved after my scan on Tuesday because of the drop in growth since my baby on scans has dropped 3 percentile lines!

Good they have said about delivery to you and you have sort of a plan- when was your last scan? In my trust they won't do growth on scans unless they are 2 weeks apart

CTMR · 21/07/2022 19:35

Hi @EllieJai44 yes my scan next week will be two weeks after my first. Hopefully everything is ok and he follows the line! I hope yours goes well too, when are you due?
