Experiences with pregnancy after IUGR

Nosleepclub14 · 24/11/2020 20:24

Hi everyone,

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant with my second baby. With my first DD I measured small towards the end of pregnancy and ended up being induced at 37 weeks exactly due to IUGR.

At the moment my bump is measuring average but it was with DD at this stage too, so whilst this is good news I’m not taking it that baby will be average sized.

I wondered if anyone had any experiences they could share if you’ve had IUGR or a small baby then had another pregnancy?
I’ve not had the normal level of growth scans due to covid and my midwife hasn’t offered much advice/help!

Thank you Flowers

I had IUGR with my first- was induced at 37 weeks and she was 5lb. With my second she measured slightly below 50th centile all the way through and then was born at 39 weeks at 7lb 14. So it's not a given that you will experience it twice. Good luck Smile

@Nosleepclub14 you will be fine - whatever happens you can do this and it’s all in your favour that baby will be fine now at past 37 weeks, even if a bit on the smaller side! I know, COVID has added to the stress with the restrictions, especially when we also have this to worry about. One of the hospitals quite near me is much better in allowing partners so going to try and go there if they allow it! My first induction took 5 days, and wasn’t in active labour til the last day!

How funny - also having a boy this time round after having a daughter first!

Corilee2806 · 01/01/2021 21:17

And hi @Leodot - it’s nice that we’ve formed this little group, a few of us going through similar experiences at around the time. It is worrying but really positive your midwife has picked it up and you have follow up in place. We’re here to listen if you have any worries or just want to vent! Is this your first baby?

Leodot · 03/01/2021 11:03

@Nosleepclub14 That’s great to hear about your daughter. Glad she was ok! How are you feeling at the moment? I saw you said you were the most pregnant you’ve ever been which is exciting!

@Corilee2806
Thanks, yes it’s my first baby! How are you feeling about things? I know, covid is making things a worry isn’t it? I hope they allow your partner to be with you.

@Superscientist
It’s not a growth scan specifically. It’s because I have a low placenta that’s blocking my cervix and would currently need a c section if it hasn’t moved up. They’re scanning to check the location of the placenta and the midwife said that they might as well check growth at the same time. That’s good to know that there can be errors with fundal measurements. I was really shocked when they said my bump was bottom 10th percentile as both my husband and I are very tall. Was definitely not expecting anything to be small! I’m glad your daughter was born safe and well!

Nosleepclub14 · 03/01/2021 13:36

@Corilee2806 Thank you, yes being past the 37 week mark is reassuring for sure. Yes it definitely has. Ah that’s good fingers crossed they will let you go there instead. And if you do need induction this time hopefully it’s quicker! Mine took 3 days last time and I thought that was bad enough!!
Ah that is funny! Congratulations! Exciting to be having one of each.

@Leodot Thank you! Feeling uncomfortable at the moment, braxton hicks and pelvic pain which I hardly got last time. Definitely been a completely different pregnancy from that respect. How are you feeling?
Yes a nice milestone to reach! Had my daughter at 37+3 and will be 38 weeks tomorrow with this one.
I saw you said you’re quite tall, it might be that baby has more room to spread up so doesn’t need to spread outwards as far, that’s what I was told as well.
Also my placenta was low at 20 week scan by 33 weeks it’s moved enough for delivery so fingers crossed for you too!

@Nosleepclub14 That’s so exciting for you getting to that point! 😊 Hope you can get some rest though and the pain lets up a bit. That’s good to know your placenta moved up as well. I bet that’s a weight off your mind! I’m hoping mine will do the same, I’ve read it does for a lot of people so fingers crossed. That’s interesting to know about the baby being able to spread up rather than out, I hadn’t really considered how that could affect bump size.

StaceImpactWfan · 04/01/2021 10:26

Hi, sorry to jump in. My baby is SGA she was estimated 5lb something at 37 weeks. My placenta is low lying hence the extra scans and thats how they knew, i have been admitted since last sunday due to placenta and SGA and have my c section tomorrow. Had to have steroids etc. Ill be 38+3 . I'm quite nervous as my other 2 were natural births weighing 8lb 11oz and 7lb 2oz so this is all new to me.

Leodot · 04/01/2021 11:12

Hi @StaceImpactWfan

Sorry to hear that’s happened ❤️. You’re in the best possible place though so they can keep a close eye on you and your baby and keep you both safe. Do you know what you’re having this time or is it a surprise?

StaceImpactWfan · 04/01/2021 12:32

@Leodot yeah thats what I keep saying to myself. A girl, have 2 boys.

Leodot · 04/01/2021 23:04

@StaceImpactWfan Ah that’s lovely! I’m having a girl too ❤️. Good luck for your c section tomorrow. Sending you lots of hugs.

Corilee2806 · 04/01/2021 23:41

Good luck for tomorrow @StaceImpactWfan - it must be a bit of a shock for you after your previous babies but I’m sure it will all be fine. You might just need to get hold of some extra tiny vests and sleepsuits for a while!

StaceImpactWfan · 05/01/2021 00:47

Thank you both @Leodot and @Corilee2806

Hoping she at least fits in tiny baby.

Nosleepclub14 · 05/01/2021 09:30

@StaceImpactWfan Good luck with your section today, hope all goes well and you have a healthy baby girl ❤️
My little one was estimated 5lb 8 at scan 37 weeks but weighed 5lb 15 a few days later when she was born so completely possible she’ll be bigger than the scan thought. I found Tesco tiny baby fit her best, boots early baby was still a bit big!
Let us know how you get onFlowers

Mammyofasuperbaby · 05/01/2021 09:35

My first was born at 33 weeks with severe iugr and was 2lbs 14oz at birth. My second was also born early due to failing growth at 36 weeks and was 5lbs 3oz

StaceImpactWfan · 05/01/2021 11:37

Thank you @Nosleepclub14 still waiting to go down. They've had some emergencies.

StaceImpactWfan · 08/01/2021 09:09

Hi all quick update. Shes here and well, she was actually between 6lb 15 oz and 7lb 1oz so alot bigger than we thought. I say between as she kept moving so they couldn't get an accurate measurement. Will know for certain when she is weighed in a few days.

Corilee2806 · 08/01/2021 10:26

Aah huge congratulations @StaceImpactWfan! And that’s a really good weight! Glad all worked out well for you and hope you’re both doing ok x

Nosleepclub14 · 08/01/2021 10:36

@StaceImpactWfan congratulations! So happy for you. Hope you’re enjoying lots of cuddles!
Can I ask what size clothes she’s in? I had a scan a few days ago and they think my baby currently weighs about 6lb 11 x

OP posts:
Leodot · 08/01/2021 11:25

@StaceImpactWfan Huge congratulations! Hope you are both ok ❤️

StaceImpactWfan · 08/01/2021 11:29

Thank you all so much, I'm in pain but other than that we are both well.

@Nosleepclub14 tiny baby is too small but first size is too big. So we are sticking with first size.

yoomoo · 08/01/2021 20:30

Hi ladies. Have popped over here from my own thread to join you Smile

Huge congrats @StaceImpactWfan on your lovely news, really pleased you are both doing well.

My story so far... currently 33+2 with my first baby, a little boy! Having serial growth scans due to my BMI which means stomach measurements are unreliable apparently, had my first one at 28w which showed baby just above the 10th centile. At this appointment the registrar logged my growth chart wrong and gave me a big lecture that my baby was 97th centile and insinuating it was due to my BMI and I must have diabetes (my GTT was negative) it didn’t sound quite right to me so when I got home I checked it and she’d done it wrong! So I redid it and made a complaint, head of midwifery went through my notes and explained that above 10th centile is fine he just needs to follow the line. Next growth scan at 32w on NYE showed that he had fallen to below the 3rd centile, looks like 2nd. Sonographer mentioned this is a concern but consultant would discuss with us. Saw a registrar instead of actual consultant (constant bug bear of mine at my hospital, possibly being unreasonable but the one at 28w was awful) who said about SGA and that we will need another scan at 34w. If his growth continues on the centile line he’s on then great but if it falls off then we need to discuss options including early delivery. Emphasised importance of movement tracking etc and that there appears to be nothing wrong with my placenta or cord blood flow so it’s a bit of a mystery. I’ve been in once since as I was worried about movements but he was fine. He does seem to have quieter days sometimes though but I don’t know if this is normal or not?
I’m guessing the next scan on Thursday will be key as it will show whether he’s just a small baby or if there is something going wrong.
Head and legs are bang on average, it’s his tummy and therefore weight that are right down the other end of the scale.
I found my hospitals policy on SGA online and it did suggest that babies under 3rd centile are to be born at 37w as they will be better out than in.
Overall a very anxious time and I’m counting down the days until Thursday.

Superscientist · 09/01/2021 14:09

@Nosleepclub14 my little one was 6lb13 at birth /6lb 8 at lowest and we had first size clothes, they were on the big side but not stupidly big. We looked at tiny baby/newborn clothes and most went up to 7lb so we decided to make do with first size. She was in them until about 8 weeks so we got our monies worth! If she was closer to 6lb we probably would have bought the size smaller.

Nosleepclub14 · 10/01/2021 15:25

Hey ladies!
I was induced yesterday with baby boy after another growth scan this week showed a drop in centile for over all weight and abdo growth.
Baby was born at 5:34 this morning after what can only be described as a crazy labour!

He weighed 7lb 9oz which was 1lb more than the scan I had this week! X

Corilee2806 · 10/01/2021 18:33

Oh wow congratulations @Nosleepclub14! I’ve been thinking of you, I’m so glad all is ok and he’s arrived with you safely! Good weight in the end - did you make it to just past 38 weeks? Induction is a crazy ride - hope you’re feeling ok and glad it didn’t take too long! I’m very much hoping for the same this time!

Huge congratulations again x

Corilee2806 · 10/01/2021 18:37

@yoomoo hope you’re doing ok, I’m in the same boat as you and waiting for my next scan at 34 weeks which is tomorrow - the wait to get here even though it will be just less than a fortnight since my last one has felt like forever. Thinking of you - keeping fingers crossed for some good growth for us both!
