Re baby clothes for hospital bag/birth - are vests sleeveless/short sleeves or long sleeve? I get really confused with which should be used under bodysuits (which is what they’ll be mostly wearing as a newborn)

NaomiB79 · 05/10/2020 15:33

@PipTed I'm not sure there is a hard and fast rule but I've packed short sleeve vests for the hospital for under the sleepsuits only because all my friends who have had babies recently said it's like a billion degrees in the hospital so I didn't want anything too hot. I've packed two cellular blankets so have an extra layer there if I need one.

PipTed · 05/10/2020 15:40

@NaomiB79 I have a pack of newborn short sleeves so I’ll use those then. All newborn clothes are different sizes in themselves, anyone else noticed this? M&S are tiny!

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 16:02

@PipTed all my mum friends say long sleeve bodysuits are a nightmare for under the sleepsuits so I’ve got short and sleeveless. Also agree it’s not so much about what the shop markets the outfit as / newborn, up to one month, but the weight!!

loobeelou · 05/10/2020 16:10

With DS we put either sleeveless or short sleeve under his clothes and sleepsuits in the colder months. Long sleeves were too fiddly and would bunch up his arms.

PipTed · 05/10/2020 16:25

Thanks guys. That makes sense. So with long sleeves, would you use those as a top with leggings? But then put a short sleeve or sleeveless vest underneath? Sorry, it’s something I’ve just not got my head round and my mum friends all say differently depending on when their child was born. 🤣🙈

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 16:40

@pipted all I’ve bought are sleepsuits for ease but i would probably do long sleeve with leggings/trousers and a cardigan over it.

NaomiB79 · 05/10/2020 16:42

I was going to use my long sleeve vests with leggings / trousers to make an outfit. You could put a wee cardigan or top on top if you need an extra layer. I think that's they only way I'll use them.

Asianchick6693 · 05/10/2020 16:52

Hey girls, seeing as we're talking about baby clothes. Have you washed all of yours? I'm even more paranoid with covid and things being out on display and not in packaging. Also thought it be best to wash off any chemicals that might be on there. Did you tumble dry? I don't want them to shrink. Planning on using a non bio powder and what temp would you say is best? Is 40 good enough? Is fabric softener too harsh for the baby? Sorry if these sound like silly questions!

Asianchick6693 · 05/10/2020 16:56

I should mention most of the clothes I have atm are sleepsuits and vests as I figure it would be the easiest thing for me to dress the baby in the first 3 months

Jwl45 · 05/10/2020 17:00

@Asianchick6693 I'm going to give them a quick wash... my machine's quick wash is 30 min and that's on 30 degree cycle.
I am using fairy non bio liquid and fairy softener. (This is what o used with my other 2 ... Or persil non bio)
Some clothes I have bought have been packaged and some haven't. Either way, I'm washing anyway.
Tumble drying- I don't have a tumble dryer at the moment so will be air drying. From experience, clothes from Next don't shrink ☺️

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 17:01

@Asianchick6693 I’m washing on 40degrees using non bio tablets. Not tumble drying.

loobeelou · 05/10/2020 17:07

I used fairy non bio detergent and comfort pure (white liquid) with DS. I washed and tumble dried all of his clothes beforehand and have found all brands (Next, Asda George, Primark) all dry fine. No shrinkage.

I used the long sleeve vests as a top and put a cardigan over the top if we needed the extra layer.

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 17:29

@Asianchick6693 how’s the situation at work?

Asianchick6693 · 05/10/2020 17:36

Thank you girls that's been really helpful. I'll probably air dry just to be on the safe side. I really need to get a move on and start packing bags while I can still be bothered to lol my tiredness is starting to kick in again.

@peachypetite I'm currently on sick leave for 2 weeks, on my second week atm and what a difference it's made to both my mental and physical health!

My manager did seem sympathetic over the telephone which is always good. I haven't really brought up the topic of being on sick leave until 36 weeks but I'm going to see how things go. Have an appointment with the midwife tomorrow so I will see if she can give me any further advice. I think frankly I'm just not fit for work as any activity aggravates my PGP. It's just holding onto the hope they don't enforce my mat leave any sooner. If they want to do that I will have to talk about reducing my hours or working from home if possible. Haven't gotten definitive answers from all the places I've contacted for advice but I feel much better after having some time off work and feel more confident in the choices I wish to make. Thank you for asking x

Jellycat2020 · 05/10/2020 17:46

@jalu47 thanks for that document, it's fascinating and frustrating how different they all still are!!

peachypetite · 05/10/2020 18:17

@jalu47 I got that too, an update from the petition. Has everyone signed? I’m so lucky my trust has made good changes. www.change.org/p/partners-allowed-for-entirety-of-labour-birth-in-all-hospitals?recruited_by_id=9a2df680-f525-11ea-bbbf-9184eb3956df&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial

BG1234 · 05/10/2020 18:29

Thanks for that @jalu47. I agree- it does make very interesting reading!

Kj1010 · 05/10/2020 18:51

PipTed · 05/10/2020 20:21

Thank you so much everyone for answering my questions on baby clothes. 😊

I have washed my first batch of lights, now I know what to use what vest for 🤣 - I did them with non bio persil on a 30 degree delicates wash and they’re air drying.

confused107 · 05/10/2020 22:27

Thanks @Jwl45 for that link, it's an interesting read

Also thank you to @PipTed for asking the questions on clothes and to everyone for answering because I needed to know that too. I have brought some fairy ready and will start washing once the nursery furniture is up so that I have somewhere to put the clean stuff when it's done

Glad you are feeling better @asianchick6693 and I hope you start to feel better soon @Kj1010. I think most of us feel nervous before scans. I have a growth scan on Friday and I'm already feeling the 'scanxiety'

Amyyy1 · 05/10/2020 23:48

Has anyone been getting Braxton hicks yet?? For a few hours I have been getting on and off period cramps which goes sharp and then wears off. How do people deal with this?!😓

peachypetite · 06/10/2020 07:46

@Amyyy1 I’ve had some but not for a few hours at a time, just minutes!

Awkes · 06/10/2020 08:23

Morning 👋
I’ve been washing clothes this week too! There’s so much it’s unreal and I’m renting so stuck with this awful washer/dryer that I think has slightly shrunk a few bits so bit wary now. Think I might have to air dry the rest to be on the safe side but it means putting the heating on and I’ve got a constant sweat on as it is 😭

Is anyone else really struggling with sleep too? I’m just so tired all the time now, it’s such hard work just dragging myself about with all the extra weight and come bed time I’m knackered but just can’t settle. I’ll spend hours tossing and turning and then inevitably have to get up for a wee and it’s usually babies most active time aswell so I’ll have her trying to burst out my ribs all the while. I’ve got 5 weeks left of work and I honestly don’t know if I can manage it
