Hi everyone, saw my midwife today, I'm almost 37w, she recommended harvesting colostrum and freezing it, this should ensure I don't go overdue. Anyone else was recommended this? Also anyone planning home birth? I'm with home birthing team and getting excited about home birth, hope I'll cope!

Viletta · 09/09/2020 21:50

@HerondaleDucks oh I hate doing perineal massage, I hope just putting oil there would help, it's hard to reach and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to massage, skin or muscle.. so frustrating and uncomfortable!

NWnature · 09/09/2020 22:12

@HerondaleDucks and @Viletta I tried it for the first time yesterday- could barely reach and just have no clue if I’m even doing it properly. I’m not sure I can be bothered persevering to be honest! It’s so awkward

BettyBotter1 · 09/09/2020 22:34

@NWnature @HerondaleDucks @Viletta same experience here

justanothermamma · 09/09/2020 22:37

@BntTowers Gosh I hope my Trust do that - what's worse is that we are way up north with our 'city' being smaller than most major towns, we had 8 confirmed cases in the county this week and they are still SO strict.

@SkyBlue20 I signed the petition and got all my family to get on board with it too! I'm keeping everything crossed.

@BettyBotter1 Gosh you must have been terrified! How are you feeling?

@Viletta There are no home births as an option in our area at the moment. I had considered it to ensure my DH could be with me but it isn't an option sadly!

@HerondaleDucks I'd never heard of this massage until recently! It sounds like an awkward process and I'm 100% certain I won't be able to reach anyway, so I'll pass I think!

Spark27 · 10/09/2020 01:49

I had the same experience with the massage thing. Got some oil and tried last time, and it just wasnt for me. Found it weird and uncomfortable, couldn't really reach and didnt know what I was doing so gave up. Haven't bothered this time.

Congratulations @Skyblue20. So happy for you, and excited for your Spring baby 💕

Feeling awful at the mo. Felt so uncomfortable last night. Back really sore, baby movements so big and painful. Managed to fall asleep relatively early but then woke around 0030 in a lot of pain. Back and stomach so tight and painful. Had a paracetamol to take the edge off and it seems to have helped a bit. Baby is moving around so much and it really hurts. So pleased DD is due at nursery today, and it's my last day WFH (handed everything over so nothing to do) as I'm not sure I'd be able to cope with her and work today. Feeling like all I do is moan at the moment. This will be my last pregnancy and I really want to make the most of all of it, but I'm reaching my limit now xx

Zaalfruit · 10/09/2020 05:00

@SkyBlue20 ahh lovely picture!! So happy for you , roll on March - it will come by quick and please allow your self to feel excited !! So exciting a spring baby.

@BettyBotter1 hope you are alright - and I’m glad your hospital is pro active and it must have been a fright .

How is everyone - my bump has gotten so big and everytime I eat the baby shifts which causes intense pain for me . I can’t sleep anymore , first trimester Nausea is back with a bang for Me . I’m still wearing my rings but not to sleep , I saw a video on Facebook where a woman’s said how she slept with her ring on pregnant and they had to cut them off - (I would be heart broken dh saved for my ring for 3 years ) .

The massage sounds to hard for me - plus I can’t reach anyways , unless I ask dh to - but I think he would be freaked out .

CharlieBalf · 10/09/2020 07:06

I discussed the massage option with hubby... We both started giggling so that's about as far as we got. So mature. I haven't been able to reach down there for about two months now, it's a jungle, not for the faint hearted 😂

Spark27 · 10/09/2020 07:56

Woke DH up at about 0130 to tell him how terrible I felt (I'm nice like that 😅) and to warn him that I might need some extra help going forward. So what happens this morning. He gets up, gets ready for work and buggers off early. I know I'm only taking DD to nursery, but no question as to whether I need him to do it for me, or even just stay for a bit and help get her ready. Last nights washing up still on the side (I cooked) and his breakfast bowl, etc.

I am fine to take her to nursery, but he could have at least asked 😤. Although maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt and he was still asleep at 0130?!

bluemoon2468 · 10/09/2020 07:58

@HerondaleDucks did my first session of perineal massage at the weekend, god knows if I was doing it right! Felt like I was just fishing around in there and definitely didn't feel like I was stretching anything particularly! Going to try and persevere though as I know a few people who haven't torn at all and swear it was due to this (who knows but anything's worth a shot!)

Buzz22 · 10/09/2020 08:11

His everyone. So much to catch up on. Sorry if I miss anything out. And I'm sorry some of you are suffering and feeling really uncomfortable now.
I dont want to gloat but so far I cant complain (except about the horrendous heartburn!)

@SkyBlue20 congratulations on your scan! What a lovely photo. I'm so pleased for you.

To anyone else house hunting/selling I feel for you. Our lovely flat has been on the market for months. Was hoping for an offer we could accept before baby arrives but it doesnt seem like it's going to happen. We have another 3 viewings over the next few days so fingers crossed. We havent been allowed to view any houses until we have an offer on ours. Maybe it varies area to area?

The dreaded perineal massage!! Urgh I havent attempted it. Midwife told me due to years of horse riding tightening the pelvic floor, I would most definitely tear or require episiotomy. I dont know whether to attempt it. Everyone I know has told me its awkward and difficult. I'm not sure if it's going to make much difference in my case as midwife was pretty blunt about tearing.

36 week midwife appointment is tomorrow. Hoping I dont have to go for another growth scan and my bump measurement has caught up. Was below 10th centile line last time.

I cant believe some of you have actual induction dates now. It's all getting so close!

Buzz22 · 10/09/2020 08:26

Oh I forgot to ask if anyone has read/heard about optimal cord clamping?

I know delayed cord clamping for up to 5 mins is now standard in hospitals. But a friend of mine gave me her old birth plan to read over. And in it she mentioned optimal cord clamping and waiting till white. Basically waiting till the cord has stopped pulsating which can apparently take up to an hour.
I wasnt sure if anyones antenatal classes whether that be PBC or NCT have mentioned this. I know there are pros and cons.
Cons being higher risk of jaundice to baby but apparently seeing as jaundice is very treatable in newborns, the benefits of the extra placenta blood outweigh the risks.
I also was unsure if it means you cant have the injection to deliver placenta?
Anyone any wiser on cord clamping or placenta injection that me?! Any advice?!

bluemoon2468 · 10/09/2020 08:39

@Buzz22 'optimal' cord clamping is waiting until white - this ensures that baby gets 100% of their blood back, but can take 10-15 mins so it's only really possible if you're planning a physiological third stage (not having the injection) as you can't get the injection until after the cord's been cut. However if you wait 3 minutes, baby will have 75% of their blood back, and if you wait 5 mins it'll be even more (probably around 90-95%) so if you want the injection then waiting 3-5 minutes is a good compromise. They've still received most of the benefits of delayed clamping.

IMO the benefits of the cord blood which is packed full of stem cells which can never be reproduced far outweighs the increased risk of jaundice which as you say can be really easily treated!

Quiffy · 10/09/2020 08:40

@HerondaleDucks I have the stuff for the perineum massage but not braved it yet. Seems very tricky!

@BettyBotter1 glad everything is okay!

@Viletta home birth is exciting! For the harvesting colostrum, this might be a silly question, but how do you give it to baby?

@Spark27 definitely feel like I'm reaching for the paracetamol more with back pain, bump pain, crotch pain etc. At least your countdown is on and getting there! Time off work should hopefully help a bit ❤️ Crap behaviour from your dh though, that's really annoying 😡

@Buzz22 good luck for your appointment today!

Does anyone know any good YouTube channels that go through newborn care and tips? Going to have an explore later I think as nerves are kicking in

Treacle81 · 10/09/2020 08:45

Morning girls! @BettyBotter1 glad to hear all ok, just take it easy today 😊 @Spark27 sounds like we are in the same boat with lack of sleep/pain add to that painful right hand again with me this morning and crampy calves. Sorry to hear your hubby not helping much, a more serious chat req now I think. Its your last working day though so thats great news 😀 @SkyBlue20 I exercised in first tri, couldn't do anything during 2nd but gained it back a bit in this last one, just listen to your body. @Buzz22 I was told the same regarding perineum due to tight pelvic floor, I'm a nightmare with smears so I do want to try the massage yet doubt I could reach. I have already had episiotomy 😔 as for cord clamping,i was under the impression the delay of 5 mins is when it turns shite and stops pulsating. Also got mw appt 2m so I'll find out as want that too xx

BntTowers · 10/09/2020 08:56

@quiffy if you want some comic relief there's one called "how to dad" is very funny. Not sure on any serious ones though...

I've not started with the massage yet, a bit apprehensive not sure I can reach...

I had a terrible night last night felt sick so often and had really bad bloat and stomach tightenings. A day off today though so I'm having a lazy morning before doing a bit of batch cooking.

@buzz22 I want to write my birth plan today and I am thinking of saying 5-10 minutes for delayed clamping.

AutumnBabyWinterMummy · 10/09/2020 09:02

Hi everyone. Sorry I've been absent for a while. I haven't had chance to catch up on old posts so hope everyone is ok, have I missed any births?!

@Buzz22 I have heard of this, I did PBC and can't remember if heard there or not. But have only heard good things no negatives.

I've seen a few of you mention perinium massage (sorry i always forget spelling!) I've got the oil, tried it once it was really hard to reach and baby was digging in my ribs. It was ok. Second time was impossible due to baby's position. I'll try again but it's a real chore. X

StrawberrySprinkles · 10/09/2020 09:32

Vet think she’s pulled a muscle in her shoulder so has had an anti-inflammatory injection and is on painkillers for the next week - but thankfully she seems a bit better in herself already. Just wish they didn’t seem so helpless sometimes 😣

Ah okay, yeah I’ve heard how inaccurate all the measuring and scans can be so trying to be reassured by that - the chart in my notes makes it look like she’s going to be a 10lber if she carries on growing at the current rate 😬

Don’t think I’ll bother with perineal massage - just don’t think I’d get the hang of it for it to really be effective?

What’s everyone’s plans for the last few weeks of pregnancy? I’ve tried to give myself a few little tasks to do each week to make the days go quicker like baking and other hobbies but would love to know what everyone else has planned to do before the little ones arrive ☺️

StrawberrySprinkles · 10/09/2020 09:33

Ah sorry, meant to tag you @Quiffy!

MrsK89 · 10/09/2020 09:46

Midwife has never suggested harvesting colustrum in any of my pregnancies, but I've not had any issues with breastfeeding in the past.
So crampy today, a lot of period type pains and a lot of nausea

justanothermamma · 10/09/2020 10:11

I'm sat waiting for the consultant to find out my plan going forward, so nervous.

In so much pain and I'm exhausted, can barely keep my eyes open so hopefully they can help me with something. I have a feeling my iron levels just haven't improved, never been so tired in my life!

MrsD1990 · 10/09/2020 10:23

I've been doing the perineum massage! Naively thought it might be relaxing before bed but it actually stresses me out so switched to doing it I'm the morning (sometimes. Some days can't face it) no idea if I'm doing it right but thought it's worth a go! Apparently it's good to do in the bath too so might start that when I'm on mat leave.

@StrawberrySprinkles I have grand plans of having a really lovely and relaxing mat leave, taking daily baths, going for nice walks and eating lunch in the garden or going out for lunch when I can. Planning to make a to do list with nice things on it but also the bits I've not finished yet eg: freezer meals and baby clothes washing. I think I need to do some of the tasks sooner rather than later before I get too big/uncomfortable! Most of my NCT group are on mat leave already and they say there's a lot of day time TV and napping involved which sounds great! Oh and there's the small matter that I need to go buy us a car before baby comes 😂 need to get on that!!

MrsD1990 · 10/09/2020 10:23

@justanothermamma sorry to hear that, hope the consultant is able to help! Xx

Treacle81 · 10/09/2020 10:44

Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has yet to try the dreaded massage! @MrsD1990 I was planning on waiting till I finished up next Friday to get baby things organised but then I was getting bigger and sorer so ended up doing it last week. I have to sort drawers and plan on deep cleaning every room in house one day at a time though which hopefully is I just take my time and hands get better, should be manageable. @justanothermamma all goes ok today.@bluemoon2468 thanks for that info. @Viletta I haven't heard anything regarding colostrum either and tbh have only had tiny amounts dried 8nti my nipples, so doubt I'll produce anything before birth. @Quiffy I think you give it to baby through a syringe xx

booroo · 10/09/2020 10:46

@Buzz22 if it make you feel any better I've got 6 competition horses and only stopped riding at 36 weeks 🙈 my last birth i didn't tear or need any help in that department.. so just because you've got good pelvic floor muscles from riding doesn't necessarily mean you need to worry.. I didn't do any perennial massage last time and won't be this time either.
Finally reached 37 weeks now 😁 hoping she's getting on board with my plans to evict her promptly as yesterday had (tmi) a small bloody show and then all evening strong pressure in my bum
And very strong tightenings across my lower bump.. not to mention an evil amount of fanny daggers 🙈
How's everybody with little one starting school
Doing? Mines been reasonably ok about it but tomorrow is her first day going in solo without me so expecting tears (from either me or her lol)
