We've started on the nursery but it's nowhere near ready for its guest of honour. I think we're saving big purchases like travel systems for Black Friday - I know the one we want had £150 off last year, so worth waiting to see.

I've also started looking at nappies. We want to go down the environmentally friendly washable route, so after an online questionnaire we were directed to Little Lamb as it matched our needs.

We bought a trial pack with one of each of their nappies in and I am so impressed. Really love them.

Anyone else thinking of going washable? Have you bought any yet?

Muriel84 · 31/10/2020 07:13

@Safxxx thanks for the advice! I’m at risk of preterm labour so I should probably be “ready” by January. That’s interesting about the car seat - I heard some hospitals won’t let you leave without one? I guess we’ll have to take a taxi home so might need one for that? My partner did mention getting the tube but I assume that was a joke... 🤨

We’ll be in a flat so won’t have upstairs/downstairs dilemma! We’re being lent a Moses basket. I’d quite like to give the next to me crib a go but not sure if we’ll have room and also now I’ll get out of bed cos we have a foot board on our bed...

@Vee1502 I’m definitely interested in - code! Where did you find one? I think we’re going to get the baby zen yoyo which everyone seems to have round where I live. Tried it out in John Lewis and it’s so light even weak old me can lift it. Is a travel system just a pram with a car seat? Might look into buying now as looks like we’re going into a national lockdown. Xxx

Muriel84 · 31/10/2020 07:16

@IamC I would like to go washable but maybe after a month or so once I’ve adjusted a bit to the arrival of little one! Xxx

wannabe123 · 31/10/2020 07:43

@IamC we're looking at going reusable - partly because our bins are only going to be collected once every 3 weeks from June! We are going to start using them a few months in.

IamC · 31/10/2020 08:08

Yeah the ones we think were going to buy can be used from 10lbs, so (hopefully we won't have a 10lber 😳 at birth) we'll start with some disposables to ease in gently!

Vee1502 · 31/10/2020 09:41

@Muriel84 I Found mine on the below website, leaving you the link here:

https://www.naturalbabyshower.co.uk/pages/instore?gclid=Cj0KCQjwlvT8BRDeARIsAACRFiVUKLuvQCg967jPDvlHfdN7UkpakpcXwmrszXBBbi-iKOE0ZXJi4kaAvVKEALww_wcB

One other thing we ordered was a bedside crib as the space next to our beds in the bedroom cannot for a full size bed. Got
15% off that via a link through the baby show currently running. If you have the Bounty app they are giving away free tickets to the show, last date is today.
See if you can stil get a hand on that. Baby show is until tomorrow so you still have time to grab a deal if you find anything worth it.

Travel system is like a bundle of pram accessories, we got the push chair and car seat, left the carry cot out. Almost all the brands do an all in one too in case you are looking to get all 3 attachments. From speaking to friends who had babies in the last 6 months, it looks like carry cots can only be used for up to 7-8 months by which time babies start sitting up anyway and won't be lying down all the time. It could have served it's purpose if it was a summer baby because you tend be more outdoors, but with him being a peak winter baby and Covid restrictions looking like they are here to stay for a while, didn't look like we will find much use of the carry cot. You can easily use the car seat attachment on the pram for visits outside like going to the doctor's or a walk outside plus the one we got (Cybex Priam) has a handy feature where the push chair reclines a full 180 degrees and becomes flat.

That said I have read that a lot of people end up using the carry cot as an overnight bed too because babies find it cosy. And NHS recommends getting at least one of either a Moses basket or a carry cot on their website, so still check if it's something that will work for you and get the whole bundle if so because it comes out a lot cheaper that way. Like you, we live in an apartment and not a huge fan of clutter either so we are trying to really assess the need of every single product before putting it down on the list 😂

Vee1502 · 31/10/2020 09:46

@IamC I don't think I want to go the reusable nappies route just yet but have been researching on eco friendly options too and found nappies by Pura which are 100% biodegradable, 100% compostable, 100% plastic free, chlorine and alcohol free and are 99% water based. Need to look into these more as I came to know about them just yesterday but do like the sound of them.

Safxxx · 31/10/2020 10:06

@Muriel84 so even if you don't have a car you need a car seat for hospital?
I'm sure you will get away without one as taxis don't require them you can hold the baby in your lap.
We have a car so yes was required to take car seat upon leaving. If necessary take your pushchair in say we're walking back home 🤣

Safxxx · 31/10/2020 10:16

I've not used reusable nappies with my previous kids, but did use the reusable toddler training pants when I was toilet training them....hassle was the drying process....so also bought pull ups disposables.
Because of winter the drying will be hard...but I will probably start using them after a couple of months.....ive not done much research but will do as this time I would like to switch....but guys first few months it's non stop changing 🤦🏻‍♀️
And non stop feeding too 😅
Ahhh good luck to us all mum's to be 💜

IamC · 31/10/2020 10:21

@Vee1502 they sound interesting too!

elfran · 31/10/2020 10:28

@Muriel84 I'd check with your hospital as I think the stories of them checking / requiring car seats are location-specific. I know some of the central London trusts don't, as I have friends who live central, never had a car and just walked home from hospital!

We're in London and don't own a car, probably won't for another year or so. Most likely getting a car seat as part of a travel system but will only use occasionally if renting one, etc. And I'm hoping for a home birth anyway so not too concerned about that aspect yet.

You're all so organized! We've made extensive lists but not bought much yet, also hoping for Black Friday and January sales to help us out.

babydust2412 · 31/10/2020 10:52

I'm not planning on doing reusable but I would definitely consider it for future bubbas because it's much better for the environment xx
Looks like national lockdown until December 1st being announced next week ☹️

Although I would love to breastfeed previously I had struggled to so will order this set as a back up.... I've always used Avent bottles and dummies for my other children I find them very good and lasting..well I've made my first purchase Lol rest will be in a month or 2😍

Char41zam · 31/10/2020 12:37

@babydust2412 I think we might follow suit here in Scotland soon too, our first minister is announcing stuff on Monday :( x

Muriel84 · 31/10/2020 14:31

@Vee1502 thank you so much! ❤️ Really helpful. I shall download the bounty app and take a look.

@elfran yeah I’m booked at uclh so very central! I was thinking I’d like a home birth but not sure my partner is keen because I’ve had some early complications. Had the most unpleasant midwife for my 25 week check this week who basically snapped at me every time I asked a question. So there was no way I was going to ask anything about birth plans! Also as mentioned not sure where we’ll be living 🙈 What travel system did you go for?

Xxx

elfran · 31/10/2020 15:20

@Muriel84 Oh no! I've been lucky as I got myself onto the caseload care team at St Thomas, so I've only seen my named midwife who will (hopefully) also attend my birth and do all my postnatal care as well, and she's lovely. The only reason I was able to get that is i said I was considering a home birth right from the beginning, and the team that does them follows a caseload care model. I have found so much of the system is about doing your own research and advocating for yourself and being "that mum", I suppose! 😬

We are most likely going for the iCandy Lime; we originally thought about something like the Yoyo but realised we spend more time walking in our local park than we do popping into Soho, and with Covid not going anywhere that might continue for awhile. So something still compact and on the lighter side, but able to handle more terrain, was best. We can always get a cheapie folding stroller in the future!

Muriel84 · 02/11/2020 07:06

@elfran aw I’ve heard good things about tommies! I had two back to back miscarriages before this pregnancy and was told at a 5 week scan I have a subseptate uterus and was at risk of losing this one. I’ve been under a consultant during the second trimester though discharged back to midwives now. So I wasn’t really thinking much about the birth early on! It’s bad that you have to know the system and push for things yourself the whole time. I was so angry with this mean midwife I saw cos she kept snapping at me and not once asked me anything about how I am. If I had any problems or stuff was difficult at home there was no opportunity to talk about it. I work for the nhs and it makes me really cross when people act like that.

@Vee1502 thank you so so much for that code! I got it through the baby show like you said and saved 15% on the baby zen travel system! Literally took me hours to get my head around all the different options. So glad to have it sorted!🥰 x x x

Vee1502 · 02/11/2020 19:23

@Muriel84 yay! Glad it worked out for you!

babydust2412 · 03/11/2020 10:30

Had my health visitor come for an antenatal visit today, she's lovely, another step closer to baby 💙 how are you all? x

@babydust2412 I'm in work today to have a discussion about my maternity leave etc feels like everything is getting a bit closer!

How far a long are you to have a heath visitor come? Im pleased it went well

OnNaturesCourse · 03/11/2020 10:49

Hi everyone.

Had a quick catch up there, not been on much as my Mumsnet app stopped working and it's a nightmare on my phone Internet page.

You all seem more organised than me! I have absolutely no energy to get anything ready, but I do believe we have mostly what we need from DC1, and friends and family have been buying clothes like crazy. It's odd how in the space of 2 years I feel like Ive forgotten everything we need!!

I'm at a slightly higher risk of having a early birth because of problems with DC1 in pregnancy and labour. I've been told if I get any reduced movements after 32 weeks they are likely to do a csection to get baby out (nearly lost DC1 in labour after reduced movements) I am also getting a scan at 36 weeks if I get to that point to see if my placenta has moved out the way, if its not my csection will be planned for around 37 weeks (I was induced with DC1 at 37 weeks but was already dilated etc so they believe this baby could be the same and don't want me going into labour naturally)

So basically I'll only make my due date if baby keeps moving as much and my placenta moves.

How is everyone finding pregnancy, I'm 25 weeks now and absolutely exhausted 95% of the time which I don't remember feeling with DC1 this early. Also having some constipation and piles issues already Blush but other than that I don't "feel" pregnant - with DC1 I vaguely remember feeling pregnant everyday with doing baby related things like shopping, painting the nursery etc etc but this time round I almost forget everyday until bump starts kicking, or I get some aches and pains. Very odd.

OnNaturesCourse · 03/11/2020 10:59

I worried about this when I had DC1 as we bought a Joie360 with newborn insert so it didn't actually come out the car. I walked out the ward holding DC and not one midwife or nurse etc said anything.

Safxxx · 03/11/2020 11:18

@OnNaturesCourse hope little one stays healthy and strong safely inside you till the time is close. Best you prepare all you need in advance...atleast if you go into labour early you don't need to stress over what's needed. Xxx

I had planned to shop in December, we are going into Lockdown on Thursday till 2nd December, and heard might even be extended after that if things have not settled....so I'm bit worried as we've started doing our bedroom and not prepared anything.....i guess I'll have to do most of it online 🙄
Other then that feel like a elephant lol I'm not too big but still I feel the heaviness..get tired and stiff too...Xxx
Can't wait till things return to normal again.

Muriel84 · 03/11/2020 11:34

It’s weird sometimes I feel huge but most the time at the moment I don’t really notice my bump. I guess that will change in the next few weeks! I know what you mean @babydust2412 stuff is starting to feel very real. I have one week left off the second trimester 😱 I just think the next few weeks are going to fly by then it’ll be Christmas.

@IamC I have issues with my uterus shape and placenta position as it was still low at my last scan at 23 weeks. I’m being scanned at 34 weeks to see where it’s at. I get a little worried my bump is a bit lopsided. It implanted in the left horn of my uterus and it just feels like the baby and placenta are all that side. X x x

Muriel84 · 03/11/2020 11:36

Oops I tagged the wrong person! Apologies @IamC I meant to tag @OnNaturesCourse and don’t know how to change it! Xxx
