Had my 20 week scan today. All looking perfect. She must take after her dad being a pain in the bum. Usually always moving and then today flat out refused to 😂 poor technician had a time of it trying to see everything and thank god we’d booked a gender scan private because she had her legs closed and wouldn’t let us see. We’ve got a 4D booked in a few weeks, feel a bit sad to think after that we won’t see her again til she’s here

Hope everyone is doing ok?

peachypetite · 17/07/2020 19:06

@ChampooPapi or other non first time mum. Please help with winter dressing newborns. If baby is in the house with heating on are they fine in a long sleeve sleepsuit? If they go out am I right thinking they need a basic bodysuit underneath as a layer?

Kj1010 · 17/07/2020 19:17

@MummyShark97 these are some of the bits couldn't help myself plus the pram and stuff ain't coming till november

@peachypetite yes with the heating on, depending how high the thermostat, a baby grow will suffice, though under about 18 degrees a baby grow and a vest is needed. I'll link you the 'gro matrix' for what to dress them in what temperature. It's shows you actually don't have to have it on even in the night if you dress them accordingly, or if you do how not to over dress them which is most important as them getting to hot is really bad for babies. I'll link it next

@ChampooPapi thank you. I feel so clueless. I ordered one pack of basic cheap white bodysuits but as I see them in diff sizes I’ll add them to my stash.

ChampooPapi · 17/07/2020 19:35

Obviously these are for night and include the tog for their sleeping bags as well but you get the idea. I found the gro egg really useful for the night time in the early months and will use it again this time because often your thermostat is in a hall or downstairs where it is much colder so keeps pumping the heating to the temp you've set, yet your bedroom is a few degrees hotter but still the radiators start going . I do usually always have the heating off at night, even with a new born baby as it doesn't that that cold here in the south west, would obviously if you weren't in a duvet snuggle up obviously! But I prefer to keep the room cool and layer the baby up. In the day time over December and January/Feb when you've got the heating on during the day and it's cost a sleep suit will absolutely suffice. Especially as baby is on you or snuggled under a blanket in their Moses basket or Crip. The most important thing is they not over heat, and hats indoors are a no no. They always put one straight on in hospital which is funny as it's so stiffling there, then they tell you when your leaving 'absolutely no hats indoors!'. It's because we loose out heat from the tops of our heads so it's how we regulate temperature, and by covering the babies head they are unable to do that. Which can be dangerous for them for obvious reasons.

@peachypetite those charts are useful for any brand of suit or bag, bit I definitely recommend getting a gro egg. They are such a good idea and you can see it glowing away in the middle of the night so a swift glace and you know if you need to add another blanket. Blankets are a lot easier to add them taking off a layer on a sleeping or feeding baby also. John Lewis and m&s do lovely cellular ones with satin edging, and eBay will provide you will loads of second hands ones too.

@peachypetite my gro egg never went blue at night the whole of the winter before last even with the heating off all night so it goes to show how warm the winters have got down here in the south. I understand further up north and Scotland it's a different story though! But you definitely can provide enough warmth for you baby even at like 10 degrees with enough layering if you need.

@Kj1010 where did you get that if you dont mind me asking?
I'm going to choose the pushchair bundle with the 3 in 1 tomorrow 😊 I've quite liked the egg and mamas and papas own xt2 bundle. Yours looks like mamas and papas too if I'm right?

excitednerves · 17/07/2020 23:22

@Kj1010 amazing haul, well done! I’d like to buy a few nice bits and bobs but I’m still a bit wary of going to actual shops.

@peachypetite I was told with my first that they should always wear one layer more than you - so if you’re indoors in a long sleeve top, then a vest and sleepsuit for baby, if you have a long sleeve and a coat going out, then baby has that plus a vest too. Also touch their back / back if their neck to check that they’re not too hot. I live by the gro-bag chart for sleeping though!

Kj1010 · 17/07/2020 23:25

@Missworry92 I got mine off online4baby it's a ickle bubba stomp 3 but they had it in smiths so we went and looked first to make sure we liked it b4 placing order and it's good as we can pay off for it aswell

Kj1010 · 17/07/2020 23:28

@excitednerves thankyou I was like that but shop was practically empty will wait now though as all summer bits mainly and not lots of nice baby groves that's why I got them as I liked will wait till I've had 20 week scan then I think I will start on the sheets bottles etc lol

chubbyhotchoc · 18/07/2020 07:28

@peachypetite I didn't use mine much. They can't wear them in car seats and they're a bit of a pain to get on and off.

PipTed · 18/07/2020 07:35

@peachypetite so glad you’re asking all this. I’ve asked a few of my friends and they’ve all given completely different answers, re: layering.

I’m still confused on long sleeved vests. I’ve bought some as think they’ll be handy in winter, but do they go under sleepsuits/ outfits too? Or is it short sleeved/sleeveless vest then long sleeved vest, then dress/bottoms/romper?

I get confused

peachypetite · 18/07/2020 07:40

@PipTed I’m going for short because I can imagine the long being a bit awkward under a long sleeve sleepsuit if that makes sense.

PipTed · 18/07/2020 07:44

@peachypetite yeah, I think that’s what is perplexing me; The sleeve situ’. Think I need a few sleeveless vests and shortsleeved too, then i can use long sleeved as top layers in the day. 🙈

peachypetite · 18/07/2020 07:46

I’m also just getting long sleeve and long legged sleepsuits for the early months, rather than trousers etc.

PipTed · 18/07/2020 07:52

Yeah, I don’t know if I can cope with putting baby in a complete outfit when it’s newborn. I anticipate there will be a lot of changing going on, so I’m with you on the bodysuits/sleepsuits at first.

chubbyhotchoc · 18/07/2020 08:04

Just my experience from first time round-
I found for the first three mo all they need is short sleeved envelope style vests and baby gros with feet and integrated scratch mittens and some little cardigan type things for an en extra layer. Anything without a scratch mitt integrated or feet in is a pain because they scratch their faces and don't keep socks or scratch mitts on. You don't want long sleeved vests because they bunch up in the arms under clothes and it's harder to dress them. They do need short sleeved popper type vests under whatever they wear to keep the nappies as flush as possible to
Their bodies and keep them warm. I'm going to get a couple of jackets instead of a snowsuit. Outfits are a bit of a faff and won't get used. I'll only get one for Christmas Day otherwise she'll be in babygros.
