Hi everyone! I've not posted for a while either but just to let you all know that the second Christmas baby arrived yesterday. Due date was Christmas Eve, so he was only 35 + 4. My waters went at 4am and he was here by 6.48am so it was all very speedy but we are both doing well. Hopefully we'll be able to come home today. His blood glucose was fine yesterday so as long as he is maintaining his own temperature then we'll be allowed home. Still can't quite believe he is here and almost 24 hours old. No name yet as we thought we had another month to go 😂 my top tip is to make sure your bag is completely packed and normal packed, trying to grab bits when rushing between contractions is not the most fun in the world!

Helski123 · 24/11/2020 06:43

Congratulations @Yellowbeansontoast on your November Christmas baby too!

loobeelou · 24/11/2020 06:56

Wow congratulations @Helski123! Hope you are both doing ok and you can go home later x

Yellowbeansontoast · 24/11/2020 07:52

@Helski123 Congratulations to you, too! What a speedy arrival, hope you're both recovering well and get to go home soon! Looks like these Christmas babies are getting impatient!

We're currently still stuck on post-natal as little man went a bit yellow, so has been getting his tan on. Luckily, our hospital guidelines are sensible and let my partner come and go as he wishes between 9am-9pm.

Helski123 · 24/11/2020 11:21

Unfortunately it's no visitors here and looks like the earliest we will be home is tomorrow. But the main thing is that he is ok. Hope you get home soon @Yellowbeansontoast

Nic2908 · 24/11/2020 11:50

@Helski123 oh my goodness. Congratulations. I love our Christmas babies are coming.

Would love some labour stories if anyone is feeling like they would like to say, absolutely understand if not.

I'm 37 weeks today.

Bumble84 · 24/11/2020 12:57

@Helski123 congrats!!

This is all now making me realise that my hospital bag is not ‘ready to go’ I still have bits and bobs to add but thought I had plenty time! We’ve not even collected the pram yet 🤪 getting it on Thursday! Baby’s bag is all ready to go though most importantly. How many nappies have people packed for hospital? I thought with covid in case my husband wasn’t allowed back in I’d take extra so I have nearly 50. Is that too much? Too few?

Mycrazylife85 · 24/11/2020 14:17

@Helski123 a huge congratulations to you! I'm glad your little one is doing so well also. That's wonderful news.

I'm 37+2 and have started having dreams of labour. Last night my dream was my waters broken on the carpet and my husband was trying to get my into the bathroom on the tiles.

@Bumble84 I'm only taking one pack. Worst case at my trust partners can visit once a day. Look at your trust and see. I've got a bag for the car with any extra bits in such as nappies so they are easy to hand and so I can stick to two bags

Helski123 · 24/11/2020 14:20

@bumble84 I'd say 1 pack. I forgot to bring any wipes and the midwives just gave me some

Yellowbeansontoast · 24/11/2020 15:54

@Nic2908

I don't mind sharing mine, but it was a bit hellish and very long, so just a warning if anyone would rather not read it!

I started getting contractions on Wednesday night around 10pm and pretty much straightaway they were coming every 2 mins each one around 30s long. Waited at home for about 2hrs just to see if they'll fizzle out, but since they didn't, I rang the labour line and although they thought I was probably in early labour they wanted me to come in to keep an eye on baby as I was only 36+3. So went in, they checked me out and said I was 1cm dilated and my cervix about 50% effaced.

I carried on contracting every 2-3mins and they did get a little bit longer as hrs went on albeit not much stronger. Then in the morning, I had another exam but haven't progressed, was still only 1-2cm, so I was transferred onto the obstetrics ward instead, thinking the contractions would fizzle out eventually (despite not easing off or slowing down the entire night). Carried on for the rest of the day without any rest as the pain and tightenings were relentless, also had to be strapped in for the ctg continuously as they were worried about babe being so little. I was only offered oromorph, which didn't do anything. Then come the evening they did another exam and I was still only 2cm with my cervix 75%. At this point they said they would either send me home to see if it eases off and I can get some rest, or I they could break my waters and put me on the drip, but were strongly advising against it (mostly as I was 36+4 at that point). We were however told that should we change our mind in the night/morning, we could always be induced then.
So thinking we had that option, decided to go home and perhaps try a walk or a bath to see if it'd help move things along. Also, having not slept for nearly 36 hours at this point, I wasn't sure how I'd cope with full on labour.

Anyway, got home, had a shower and hung out for a bit, then all of a sudden my uterus decided to just go into a complete overdrive - I started getting back to bakc contractions that were at least 30s long with hardly any rest in between. After about half hour of that we got really worried about little one, so rushed back into the hospital (just 3-4hrs after we left) and were immediately put back on the monitoring. Luckily, baby is a tough cookie and was coping just fine, but my uterus carried on for another hour or so before slowing down to 60s contractions every 3 mins. I saw the Dr at that point, who said this could finally be labour establishing and that she would review after another 4hrs.

It's all a bit of a blur from then on as at some point in the next few hours, my body sort of gave up (combination of not sleeping for 2 days and nonstop contractions last 30hrs), I just remember going really blank and feeling extremely nauseous and in pain. My partner says I went really pale and started shaking violently. Got given some strong antisickness and a pethidine injection. I remember feeling really scared after that as they gave me a bit of a horse dose, so it affected me quite badly. I couldn't really see, was super confused and just generally feeling unwell. Luckily, it did finally knock me out and I managed around 3hrs of sleep before waking up and my contractions starting bakc up again. This was Friday morning.

Got put back on the monitors for an hour and as my contractions were back to one every 3mins and lasting 60s, they sent me back to labour ward and let me contract. We asked about the induction at this point, but were told they would not do it (the drs changed overnight) before 37 weeks, so my best hope would be staying on the unit for another 2 days until I hit 37weeks. It sounded ridiculous and I was getting pretty desperate as yet again not able to get any sleep and they would not give me anything stronger than oromorph.

Somehow managed to doze off for a couple more hrs throughout the day, I think my body was just so exhausted I eventually slept through some of the contractions even though they were still pretty painful.

Finally, Friday afternoon I lost my mucus plug and my waters broke shortly after. Had another exam and whilst still only 2cm, at last my cervix was completely effaced. I was left to labour for another 6hrs them thinking the contractions would finally progress. However at 11pm, I have not made it any further which is when my lovely midwife (who in the end delivered my baby) realised there was another bag of waters right in front of babe's head stopping him putting any pressure on my cervix and therefore it not opening any further. So she popped those, put me on a drip and from then on things went very quickly. Sometime around 1am when my drip got doubled for the second time, things started getting a bit much and I was literally screaming for an epidural. Luckily, it worked and by 2am I was 9cm. After that it took maybe another 2 hours to get to 10 and then after only about half hour of pushing little one was finally born.

Afterwards, my uterus wouldn't contract properly (I don't blame it after contracting for over 50hrs) and I ended up with a postpartum haemorrhage and got taken to theatre.

So yeah, not the most straightforward labour, but am just glad little man arrived safely and we're both recovering okay.
Just a note to anyone unsure about the epidural - I was not at all keen on it, but I don't think I could've delivered without. I'd say if you end up on the drip, make sure to ask for it soon as things clearly progress very quickly and sitting still whilst nearly 9cm dilated was possibly the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.

I really really hope none of you ladies have to go through anything similar, but just to reassure you - looking at my little man next to me I would do it all again in a heartbeat. He makes it all worth it :)

Yellowbeansontoast · 24/11/2020 15:58

Apologies, just realised I've written a bit of an essay, oops! Blush

Also, @Bumble84 - we have needed about 30 til now (day 3), so it really does depend how long they keep you. The hospital does keep a supply though should you run out and most likely you'll be out the same day. :)

Katbaby · 24/11/2020 16:40

More babies how exciting ❤️❤️

Soo I'm having a dilemma

What would you girls do in this situation?

So I'm due on 28th, and am wanting to limit contact with people running up to labour so I mentioned it to my sister who I would be seeing Christmas day how she felt about minimising her contacts beforehand, she informed me that should the pubs be open she will be going out Christmas eve with all her mates.

So I'm naturally concerned about being in close contact with her on the day and have mentioned to my mum about maybe having to stay away Christmas day

This is causing rows, especially when I said it would affect who got to see baby after birth as well - my husband has already had covid but I'm terrified of testing positive in labour and having my birthing options limited because of this.

Help!!

loobeelou · 24/11/2020 17:15

Wow @Yellowbeansontoast sounds traumatic! Glad your little boy is here safe and you are both doing well x

SettyBuarez · 24/11/2020 17:28

@Yellowbeansontoast and @Helski123 congratulations on your arrivals! How exciting! Hope you're all recovering well!

@Katbaby It's hard but I think you and your DH need to do what's best for you. If that causes rows then it shows where people's priorities lie. Unfortunately, it will impact who gets to see the baby first but that's on them to decide. Do what's best for you and baby, not everyone else.

Nic2908 · 24/11/2020 17:30

@Yellowbeansontoast wow. You absolutely trouper. You sound like you did an immense job. I'm not sure I could have gone through that.

@Katbaby you do what feels right for you and your baby. Worst case scenario you or your husband tests positive for birth. Yes your husband has had it before but he could very easily have another positive swab... I've seen it myself. It sounds to me like maybe your sister is being slightly selfish knowing that there is a new baby coming. Pubs will be out boxing day could they not go out then?

SettyBuarez · 24/11/2020 17:36

@Katbaby I just realised by decide, I didn't mean they'd get to decide who sees the baby first, but by choosing to go out and not reduce contacts means they've decided that's not as important to them. Sorry for the confusion!

LoveSunshine01 · 24/11/2020 17:38

@yellowbeansontoast wowee that's a story and a half - well done, sounds like you were an absolute hero through that!

@Katbaby does your sister realise the full implications if you get covid before the birth? They vary by area even so might be worth spelling it out for her. Worst comes to worst have a nice chilled out christmas with your husband.

Sunflower0000 · 24/11/2020 22:08

@Yellowbeansontoast thanks so much for sharing! That sounds horrific but sounds like you still did an an amazing job and are a superwoman! Hope you get home soon x
Congratulations to @Helski123 aswell, hope you are both doing well too x

Helski123 · 24/11/2020 22:51

Wow @Yellowbeansontoast that's quite a labour.

My experience was very different and overall very positive. At 4am I realised I was leaking and it wasn't urine. Within 10 to 15 minutes I was having contractions so phoned my midwife. She told us to go straight to the labour ward at the hospital 30 mins drive away as our local hospital only has a midwife lead unit and baby was 35 + 4. In the process of gathering everything together my contractions had gone to every 4 minutes. We drove to the hospital, arriving about half 5 ish. My partner had to wait outside the ward while I was assessed. It took about 15 mins for the midwife to come in, by which point I was needing to push. She didn't examine me but took me straight to delivery and got my partner. The head was right there and I started pushing straight away. Baby was born at 6.48am. No pain relief, didn't even has gas and air. And only a couple of stitches.

Felt fine immediately after, just thirsty and hungry. Although they had baby doctors in the room in case, they didn't do anything as baby was fine. I was able to do skin to skin, delayed cord cutting. The doctor came back and had a look at him a couple of hours later.

Overall I've been feeling great. Was mobile afterwards straight away. My innards haven't felt like they need to fall out. Weeing didn't sting. Pooing has been fine too (sorry if tmi). Seem to be doing well on breastfeeding too.

I realise I've been incredibly lucky to have such a good, straightforward delivery, if a little speedy. The only downside has been no visitors while we stay in to make sure baby can maintain his body temperature.

Hopefully home tomorrow evening!

Helski123 · 24/11/2020 22:52

Good luck to all the other mums to be!

Katbaby · 25/11/2020 07:30

@SettyBuarez @Nic2908 @LoveSunshine01 thank you so much for your advice. It's a really difficult situation, especially because it's likely that I've already had covid since my husband tested positive it would be very unlikely I didn't catch it too-we didn't stay apart in the house and things, so I could be worrying for nothing if I already have some immunity to it.

35+2 today and bump has dropped a bit which is giving me better breathing capacity which is nice 😊

Also finish working for maternity leave tomorrow although working from home and also in isolation its a little bit of an anti climax really but I will be glad to pack the works laptop away and not have to think about it anymore.

Thank you girls for sharing your birth stories ❤️

calipoppy · 28/11/2020 11:43

Hope everyone's doing ok in these last few weeks before we finally meet our babies! I just wondered how much movement you're all feeling? I'm definitely still feeling the baby move but the movements have got a lot less strong and are more gentle now, I'm assuming that's them running out of space but just wanted to check if others are finding the same? I'm 37+4 today x

ElsaCC · 28/11/2020 13:46

@calipoppy I'm 37+4 today as well and what I feel is that the movements are less frantic and are now more like a stretch. And he likes to stretch a lot!!
But if you have any concern you can always call your midwife, its better to just double check with them. Also if you go to Tommy's.org they have lots of info about baby movement

LikeSilentRaindrops · 28/11/2020 14:42

Congrats @Helski123 and @Yellowbeansontoast - how exciting for you!!

You’re giving me hope because mine’s due on Xmas Eve and am praying he comes earlier so I can escape the pain and discomfort from Braxtons every evening 🤪 can I ask, were they both first babies? This is no.3 for me...

calipoppy · 28/11/2020 17:04

Thank you @ElsaCC ! Yes I'm debating going to get checked just as it does feel quite different over the last few days. It's so hard to know what's normal!
