Of course for many a home birth is the absolute opposite of anything they want too labour wise, which is very sensible as well.

It's very very personal a choice as well as very dependant on the factors I've put above like the hospital location to your home and the level of risk in your own pregnancy.

I will definitely this time around be in a surgical gown zonked out in hospital so it's a very individual thing and different for each pregnancy and subsequent baby.

Especially for first time mums, the unknown is the main fear a lot of the time and a hospital feels a very secure environment.

And shout our to midwife lead units, if you've got one and can possibly visit over the summer then I urge you too. The one in Bristol is 👌

Cossham birth center for anyone in Bristol. Please understand the couple of negative reviews, they have had to close a few times, once due to major snow incident and another due to emergency building work that they were waiting for funding from the government for so little notice was given when they closed for a few weeks.

The actual birth center is like a private hospital and is absolutely fantastic.

I too couldn't have my last baby there because they were short staffed and want three midwives per labouring woman so had to go to southmead hospital. But they are amazing units so I'd never dream of leaving a bad review. I was bowled over by it when I looked around, it kicked southmeads arse hands down.

Lots of these maternity units have had to close due to funding so have a look at your local area online. There care is amazing and you will always have your own private room and double bed, birthing pool ect.

Hi everyone, I'm going to be 17 weeks tomorrow. It's so lovely seeing everyone's baby bumps and scan photos. Reading through so glad everyone else is experiencing similar symptoms to me. Morning sickness is still haunting me. Been feeling pretty lonely due to this covid situation as I haven't been able to see friends or family. Due on 6th December. Wish everyone all the best with their pregnancies!!

RestorationInsanity · 27/06/2020 20:05

Thanks @ChampooPapi good to know from someone who's experience it before! At first I thought I was just imagining it because I wanted it to be happening!

We do also have a birth centre at our local hospital which is my first choice but depends on whether they have to medicalise that more too because of the pandemic.

roro87 · 27/06/2020 20:08

Yes got loads of pictures from the scan today. I love Looking at his leg and at his little foot. 💙

And welcome @Asianchick6693! Our due dates are close, I'm due in the 4th! This is a great group, am so pleased I joined. There's always someone there if you need to share some excitement, or feel overwhelmed, or need advice.

Snowwhite2020 · 27/06/2020 20:20

@ChampooPapi love the radio 4 recommendation- wee shipping forecast through the night to keep them sleeping 😂

There is a midwife led unit at our local hospital and a friend of mine gave birth there recently and said it was great. I have an anterior placenta and read that it can make you more likely to have a back to back birth which absolutely terrifies me! Know of a few people who have given birth this way and especially with a first baby can go on and on and be even ore painful. So that has put the fear into me a bit!! I hope this does not happen xx

Asianchick6693 · 27/06/2020 20:24

@RestorationInsanity thank you! I've just been feeling so emotional lately, cried last night and this afternoon because I suddenly felt overwhelming love for the baby. It's hard to put it into words, guess I'm also feeling anxiety about being rubbish once baby is here (I'm a first time mum).

RestorationInsanity · 27/06/2020 20:30

Me too! And baby was a total surprise as I'm supposed to be infertile and was taking HRT, so I had basically planned our whole life with no children, so we've just got these next few months to prepare! You will be great, you love the baby and you want to do well. Those are the most important things!

Asianchick6693 · 27/06/2020 20:36

@RestorationInsanity that's amazing, you and your partner must be over the moon. You're right, I just want to do the absolute best. I was diagnosed with PCOS and told I'd find it difficult to get pregnant. My periods were all over the place for a couple of months and me and my husband wanted to start trying but I wanted to figure out what was wrong first. 1 week after the diagnosis I found out I was pregnant, couldn't believe it and it was the first month of trying too. Just feels like a miracle and blessed!

chubbyhotchoc · 27/06/2020 20:39

@roro87 lovely pics!
Can't keep up with this thread. Has runner girl been back to say how she's getting on?
I'm about to make a big purchase of the pram. I've got my heart set on an uppababy vista as I had one with dd. The new version as a travel system is £1400 which is obviously very pricey. I've seen this 2019 version deal which is a lot cheaper at £859 with a footmuff and car seat base. My mum is unsure about the colour.
www.trendybaby.co.uk/uppababy-vista-2019-special-edition-pram-cabriofix-travel-system-spenser?search=Uppababy
I could get the 2019 pale green which is about £1000 but no footmuff.
I did see this colour way in John Lewis last year and actually liked it but it's obviously not sold well hence the cheap price so I'm second guessing myself now. What do you ladies think? Is the colour too much?

@ChampooPapi I'm torn about Cossham - it's the closest to home and looks stunning but I have so many friends/relatives who had emergencies in labour that I don't know if I want to be that far from Southmead. Mendip, the alongside unit in Southmead, looks nearly as nice and is also next to where the doctors are 😂 I'll discuss it with the midwife closer to the time though -- hopefully I'll be able to look around both as restrictions are eased :-)

I am having a tired day today: lay down for 5 minutes and ended up having an hour long nap!

Hanrora06 · 27/06/2020 20:47

@ChampooPapi that's really interesting! My MLU does seem really good, their website isn't quite as good as Bristol's though!! The Cossham unit looks incredible! I would love to visit my local one if I can. Just another thing to add to the list of questions I'll be asking haha. Though it's all still so uncertain as who knows where we'll be by December...but still good to know their perspective.

Fredthespider · 27/06/2020 21:09

@ChampooPapi did you manage to get into the Mendip unit at Southmead? With my first Cossham was closed (it closed for a year due to staff shortages) now it's open again, but not staffed fully so you have to ring and they will send a midwife over to the unit to open it up for you, it's a bit like arranging a home birth at a hotel 😂. I ended up in Mendip which I was quite happy with but I wonder whether it's much different at Cossham? They seem to offer the same things on paper.

Pinktruffle · 27/06/2020 21:09

Congratulations @roro87! Lovely scan photos

RunnerGirl123 · 27/06/2020 21:20

Hi ladies. Thanks @chubbyhotchoc for thinking of me.
We had a CVS on monday and got our initial results on Wednesday, the 3 chromosomes for downs, Edward's and pataus have all come back normal. I'd convinced myself something would come up so we were pleasantly surprised! Got a scan a week on tuesday and then should have the rest of the CVS results later that week, so just waiting now. Then we'll be back at the hospital talking next steps. I feel like time is going so slowly at the moment.
I'm still reading all your posts on here and wishing all the best for you all in your pregnancies.

RestorationInsanity · 27/06/2020 21:39

@RunnerGirl123 I'm so pleased those results were normal. I know it's a small step on what feels like a very steep climb but it's one less thing to worry about. Hope you're keeping well otherwise. X

excitednerves · 27/06/2020 21:53

Just to add my two pennies worth - I’m high risk as I had a preemie baby and have multiple risk factors for another so I had to be labour ward. Last time it was not my choice (not my choice this time either but I know it’s my only option at least!). I was 100% all for midwife unit, birth pool etc, I’d have had a home birth if I didn’t live in a small flat where everyone could have heard me. Lol

Anyway, labour ward it was, and it was honestly great. I had access to loads of birthing equipment, the midwives were amazing and they let me do things my way as much as they could. If it’s your choice to give birth there, or if you have to like I did, I just want to reassure you that it can still be really positive and a great birth.

NaomiB79 · 27/06/2020 22:05

@RunnerGirl123 I've been thinking about you too wondering how you are. I'm pleased the initial results were good, it must seem like time is going so slowly for you between results and scans. Just take it one step at a time x

Snowwhite2020 · 27/06/2020 22:44

That’s great news @RunnerGirl123 have been thinking of you and praying for you and your little one. All my love xx

chubbyhotchoc · 27/06/2020 22:57

ChampooPapi · 27/06/2020 23:01

@Fredthespider after reading your message I looked at what had happened to Cossham the past few years and it's so sad they had to completely close it. The funding is just appalling for these things, I mean it was so close to women on that side of Bristol also compared to the other two hospitals also, such a blow. But yes I've seen it's now a call situation, though it was when I had my daughter in March 2018, at least you called Cossham to check they had enough staff instead of having to call the mendip and then get it opened up. So I see it is now like a kind of hotel service situation 😆.

I absolutely loved it whenever I was at Cossham maternity unit, all my midwife appointments were there, as well as my post natal care, baby weighing ect for the first few weeks after birth. It's just smaller so seems more intimate but definitely offers all the same thing as the mendip on paper.

I was rushed into southmead so litrally was escorted into a side room with absolutely no double bed or pool ect, just those soft play sort of giant building blocks that you can sit on and had her in there.

I think they were very busy and obviously as I was trying to take my trousers off at reception and saying I needed to push they definitely had to bundle me into the closest room and get that baby out not in the corridor!

@Hanrora06 I really hope you do get visit your local midwife lead unit, even if it doesn't feel like the right choice afterwards, it really is totally different having a physical tour of these places and seeing them in the flesh. It's such an unknown still whether we'll be able to do that with our local hospitals either, it just feels good to stroke around the place you plan to give birth, even if it doesn't work out that way on the day. That is just an important part of the planning of it all really, and knowing you are going to a familiar environment, hospital or midwife unit, or the two combined.

@EithneBlue yes it depends where your coming from in the city, we were in St George so were just over 5 minutes to Cossham. And about twenty to southmead. So we knew if we were blue lighted from Cossham it wasn't too far, and I had had a very straight forward labour of course most importantly previously. This ringing up situation seems a bit of a mare, maybe the mendip would be the right choice for you, it is really though all about what you personally feel comfortable with. If it gives you the fear don't do it! Whatever anyone else says really. I know if I was still there id probably try the unit, but no doubt would end up at the mendip due to them not having enough staff to open 🙄. Could be a faff couldn't it really? But definitely look around both if you can, knowledge is power and cements those decisions and fills you with more confidence going forward.

Hopefully we will all get to nose around wherever we hope to birth, surly by October we could potentially? It's so uncertain isn't it.

I'm just laying awake tonight, usually always asleep by 10, but as we near these half way points, there is just so much to think about. I will turn off now and send good dreams and a calm rested Sunday to all 💜👣💜

I'm 18+2 now and a FTM, I've been feeling the baby move for a couple of weeks now but not posting a huge amount if attention as I wasnt sure that's what it was (I'm now more confident it was the baby moving). Since deciding that I've been paying a little more attention and realised that some days I feel quite a bit of movement and other days hardly anything at all. I've had about 2 days now of very little, is that normal at this stage? My scan is still 2 weeks away and I've got some scanxiety now that something is going wrong

@RunnerGirl123 lovely to hear an update, the test results sound positive. I'll be sending lots of positive vibes to you for your scan.
