Early pregnancy worries

Hi all, I got my first BFP with first baby on Saturday and am roughly 5 weeks pregnant... my question is has anyone else experienced little to no symptoms at this early stage? Yesterday I felt exhausted, headache and slightly hung over.. I am going to the loo a lot and have had some mild cramping at the start of the week but today I feel nothing. It has made me feel quite anxious today as a lot of people keep telling me sickness etc is a sign of strong hormones . Anyone else had similar experiences?

In my first pregnancy (which started off as twins) I had no symptoms at all.

Hanabanana17 · 16/05/2020 17:39

Hi everyone! Looking for some advice if anyone's out there with similar. I've just joined. Had a BFP last night (around 5 weeks) which was exciting and scary. We've been trying for 4 years (miscarried in 2016) and been having fertility treatment for 3 years on and off (2 unsuccessful attempts of IUI). I had cervical cancer last year which meant we had to stop until I was treated and I haven't been able to have my 6 month check up due to COVID! We were also due to have IVF this month which was also cancelled so to find out we're pregnant naturally is amazing! Downside.... I've had a UTI and been on amoxicillin for 3 days, had really bad stomach and cramps and then started spotting today on every wipe (had a couple of days brown spotting last week which I out down to implantation now I know I'm positive). I did two further tests this morning and the line is really really faint :( I'm so anxious I'm miscarrying again I feel so sad. We want this baby so much. I have seen its fairly common to have light bleeding and cramps in the beginning but not convinced (as my only experience of this didn't end well). Also boobs were sore last week but don't feel so sore now. Anyone else had similar but ended with a healthy pregnancy?! X

Northernsoul90 · 16/05/2020 19:00

Hello @Hanabanana17 I can’t offer much advice I’m sorry as I am pregnant for the first time. I have also had cramps and intermittent symptoms and have been reassured by quite a few people that that is normal... also my first couple of tests were very faint and only really darkened significantly over the course of a few days. Im am unsure about the spotting although both my sisters had spotting in early pregnancy and were fine and went on to have healthy babies. Could you ring the EPU maybe and ask for their advice if you are worried? Hoping and praying for you that all is well 🙏🏼 xxxxxxx

@MayBug2020 yes this is my first! Same for you? It does sound like we are at a similar stage... on the NHS due date calculator it said my due date would be around January 14th... I have my first midwife app on the 2nd June xx

Hi @Scubalubs87 thank you for replying! Yes I have a very anxious nature and tend to over think things, im hoping the worries will settle the further on in pregnancy I get when I feel a bit more pregnant and can feel the baby etc!

@northernsoul90 yes this is my first. Well I am a little unsure of my due date as I came off my pill and only had one period - my app says 6+5 and a due date like 4th Jan but the digital pregnancy test said 2-3weeks (which I know of from conception) which I don’t think works out the same as my app and would mean I am more like 5 weeks. I have a midwife calling me on Monday (not sure if this is my first appointment or more of a consultation?? Have you had a call with your midwife or bloods taken yet? Xx

Northernsoul90 · 16/05/2020 19:31

It’s confusing working out how many weeks you are! It’s hard to get your head around... I have longish cycles (31/32 days) so sometimes the calculators can be inaccurate as they work off a presumed 28 day cycle. I haven’t spoken to the midwife yet.. I rang GP last week and was asked the start date of my last period she then booked me in to see the midwife at what she was estimating as 8 weeks - going off period date. No blood test or anything booked unless that is taken at the midwife app? My first clear blue date test said 1-2 weeks last Saturday I am going to do another tomorrow as I hope to see the weeks progress for some reassurance (slightly neurotic 😂). I was told that due to COVID I would have to attend the midwife app alone which is fine xxx

@Northernsoul90 thanks so much for your reply. It is such a worrying time. I think what makes it more confusing is that everyone's experiences are so different! Praying and trying to stay positive. I rang EPU this afternoon for some advice and they were very kind but said unless bleeding gets heavy, there's nothing they can do and they're not doing reassurance scans at the moment due to COVID so guess I've just got to watch and wait!🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 Tracking this thread for you also and wishing you (and everyone else in here) the best for your pregnancies xxxx

MayBug2020 · 16/05/2020 19:44

@northernsoul90 my test yesterday said 2-3 weeks. I haven’t got anymore to use - do you think I should do another one? I did two yesterday but only one was a digital one. my GP said my hospital had a self referral so I had to self refer online. I completed that and got a call the same day to book my appointment - was surprised when they said it would be Monday. They said this would be over the phone, after looking it up I think this is due to Covid and would normally be and face to face meeting but not sure. The last on the phone said I would then be sent for bloods which I am guessing could be at my doctors or the hospital. Trying to make notes of things to ask on the call :) xxx

Hey!! First time mum here also, I'm 28 weeks today and can say that I didn't have any form of symptoms until 7 weeks, it completely worried me at first and now I'm wishing I was symptom free haha! I've suffered with severe hyperemesis since 7 weeks which made me go in and out of hospital constantly on a drip, no medication worked at all! It finally started to calm down at around 24 weeks but even now I'm still vomiting at least twice a day! Just a little tip, if you do keep bringing your food back up/ liquids please please speak to a healthcare provider ASAP instead of waiting like me because I ended up loosing a lot of weight during the first/ second trimester & have only just started getting a bump as of 2 weeks ago!!

You usually get bloods took with the midwife not the GP and that's from 8+ weeks that they try to fit you in.

I had completely normal periods before I got pregnant, could say the exact day I was going to come on etc but I ended up being 2 and a half weeks earlier than expected (not the best news when you're vomiting 24/7 haha) turns out for some reason that month I ovulated a little bit later than I normally do so it's completely normal to have your app say a due date but have a pregnancy test say different.

Congratulations!! Hoping you's are all staying safe and try to enjoy the pregnancy as much as possible whilst being in isolation! Grin

Northernsoul90 · 16/05/2020 19:53

@Hanabanana17 thank you, really hoping it all goes well 🤞🏼 It is so nerve wracking. Definitely try to stay calm and positive which is easier said than done! I have anxiety and have recently started meditation (just guided ones on YouTube) which seems to help calm my nerves when they are particularly bad. Also watching a movie/reading etc might be helpful to take your mind off things for a while.. (I don’t mean that to sound patronising I know they are very basic things) I just find that if I don’t distract myself I start googling, my thoughts spiral and I end up in a mess overthinking everything. All the best! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 xxxxx

@SteAl0306 thank you for your message. Sorry to hear you have been suffering with sickness. I have not yet been sick but felt it all day - like you do when you haven’t eaten but expecting it to get worse. Thank you for also advising on the bloods - I wasn’t sure where these would be taken due to covid but I guess I will find out on Monday.
This is why part of me wants an early scan so I know the correct date and what I am working to :) x

Northernsoul90 · 16/05/2020 19:59

@MayBug2020 no I wouldn’t say you needed to do another! I just want to do one as it said 1-2 weeks on my first and I would like to see it move to 2-3 or 3+ if that makes sense but it’s definitely not necessary. Ahh yes everything will be different at the minute due to covid... the receptionist at my GP said the midwife app would take over an hour. My sister is also pregnant (23 weeks) and said I will get my white book to fill in at the app with family medical history and all the notes etc. I bet depending on which county or health service things will differ slightly as well! xxxx

@northernsoul90 yes that is true. I will keep you posted on what happens with my appointment on Monday xx

Northernsoul90 · 16/05/2020 20:05

@SteAl0306 hi! I feel for you so much, my sister has suffered from hyperemesis with both her pregnancies (she is currently 23 weeks with her second) and it is miserable, she gets so seriously ill it’s quite scary...I am terrified of HG! Hope it eases for you soon, thank for you for the reply and congratulations to you too! Such a strange time at the minute so it’s nice to hear everyone else’s experiences Smile xxx

@MayBug2020 yes I completely get you either the feeling sick constantly!! Have you tried ginger biscuits or ice pops/lollies? Ginger didn't help me until 3 weeks ago but so many people recommended it to me and said it helps with nausea/sickness!! Are you also snacking every couple of hours or having smaller meals as that usually helps rather than not snacking/eating 3 big meals a day. Another good thing is don't gulp your water, just take small sips as I found I would bring it back up or feel more nauseas when taking big drinks.

The midwifes go off the first day of your last period as an estimate for your due date until you've had your first scan and then you'll be told an accurate date! I re read your messages and seen that you said you should be around 6+5 is that from the first day of your last period? If so then you'll get a scan in roughly 4 weeks so I would totally leave the early scan out!! Trust me, I wanted to go for an early scan so many times but it was £50-£70 and I realised that £50 goes a long way with going towards buying baby things! But that's completely your decision :)

Good luck!! And congratulations xx

Lily2020 · 16/05/2020 20:15

Congratulations! I'm also 5 weeks, zero symptoms, the slightest bit of tenderness to one boob but really have to think about it 😂 I didn't have any at all until 6 weeks with my dd & even then I think it was headaches from caffeine withdrawals! Don't panic! Not everyone gets the overwhelming symptoms we hear about 😊

SteAl0306 · 16/05/2020 20:23

@Northernsoul90 Hi! I really feel for her, I never knew about it until I ended up in hospital and they explained to me what it was. I always thought pregnancy would be a walk in the park and it would be the labour that's the worst lol! Completely agree about hearing everyone else's experience, especially when you're worried about something and someone can give you advice on it. Mumsnet has been my go to during this time with no one being allowed to see family, plus I haven't seen a midwife since being 14 weeks and I'm not too sure if I even will see her again before I give birth! Quite a stressful time but it's nice to know you're not the only one going through it& great to have people to chat to as there's only so much DP can relate to lol x

ttcchapter1 · 16/05/2020 21:48

So so glad I'm not the only one. Got my BFP on Thursday and probably have used 10x more toilet roll than usual because I keep randomly coming to the toilet to check everything is okay. 4 weeks now. Just want the midwife to call me around week 6 so I can offload my concerns 😭 and get some reassurance that I have no need to be worried.

Violetlilac · 17/05/2020 01:35

So reassuring to see that other ladies have similar anxieties! I'm only 4 + 2 weeks and desperate to get through to a point where I can relax a bit!!

Nicknamegoeshere · 17/05/2020 02:03

I hardly had any symptoms for at least the first ten weeks and with a history of recurrent miscarriage and missed miscarriage, was convinced I was going to be told I had lost my baby at the 12 week scan. I honestly felt no different at all, except for maybe a little more tired than normal (and I'm 39 and was working ft).

I'm now 38+2 weeks' and waiting for her to be born! Smile

MayBug2020 · 17/05/2020 08:12

@SteAl0306 yes I have heard ginger helps so I have added some ginger snaps to my shop :) oh I will try to have regular snacks today and I am trying to pick heathy things but just want bread. I am taking folic acid, vitamin D and omega 3 so hoping the baby is getting everything it needs even if I am only eating carbs.

Yes my app is going by my last period which I am until the scan although the pregnancy test confused me. I did take a pregnancy test 10 days ago which would have been a week after my period was due and it was negative which makes me think maybe i ovulated later this month. I don’t know my cycles at all as I only came off the pill recently so only had one period.
Xx

MayBug2020 · 17/05/2020 08:13

Ladies, it is so nice having people to be able to talk to during this time. My OH and I are not telling anyone until after the scan so it’s nice to have others to talk to to understand what is happening xx

Northernsoul90 · 17/05/2020 08:23

Congratulations everyone! It is nice to have other people who understand to talk to and share worries/anxieties. @ttcchapter1 you aren’t alone in the toilet trips I feel like I’m constantly checking! Xx
