Told wrong gender at ultrasound??

Has anyone ever been told boy and it turned out to be a girl? Or the other way around?

My 16 week ultrasound at window to the womb looks like a girl in some images but I was told boy. I know they are probably correct but feel like I can’t buy anything yet as it doesn’t look very ‘boyish’.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I know 2 mothers who were told the wrong sex. Big surprise when the babies were born!

nowaitaminute · 13/05/2020 14:12

I had a friend who was told boy and it was a girl.

sel2223 · 13/05/2020 14:13

I would wait for confirmation at your 20 week scan.
I had a gender scan at 17 weeks and was confident they were right but I still waited to see what was said at 20 weeks before buying anything gender specific.

It's rare for them to get it wrong but it does happen. A friend of mine was told girl at several scans through her pregnancy then gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy. It's more common this was round than the other (where they say boy but it turns out to be a girl). Normally if they say boy it's because they've seen something unmistakable between the legs!

Tatty101 · 13/05/2020 14:13

While sometimes they can get it wrong of course, I think I'd go with the expert's view rather than my own in this scenario.

They do spend years learning this stuff and that's got to trump your feelings about a few images assuming you have no training in this area?

Nixen · 13/05/2020 14:14

Looks ‘boyish’ in what way? Did you expect him to have a football and a train set in there?

In seriousness, I think the qualified staff doing the scan are probably going to know better than you.

Mistakes with identification of the sex of an unborn child can happen. Why don't you just buy gender neutral stuff? Babies don't need to be in pink or blue.

ineedaholidaynow · 13/05/2020 14:16

I do always wonder how people would feel after having a gender reveal party they end up being wrong.

Hoppinggreen · 13/05/2020 14:17

was it a scan to tell the sex or an anomaly scan?
If the latter telling you the probable sex is just an add on really, they do't have to and in some areas actually wont.
I had a Private scan for a variety of reasons and was pretty certain I was having a girl but I didnt count on it (she was a girl)
Baby clothes can be suitable for both sexes anyway but if you dont want pink clothes for a boy or blue for a girl etc then buy other colours - they spend most of their time in baby grows anyway

I never even know what they’re looking at when they showed me on the screen. I’ve got a DD6 and they were completely right at my 20 week scan. I’m currently 21+4 and have been told at my 16 week and 20 week scans that I’m having another girl. It was actually three expert opinions because my 20 week scan was carried out by a student so I had a fully trained sonographer there as well. They always show me what makes them think girl and I can never really tell. Maybe I would if I had had boys...

MarshmallowsOnToast · 13/05/2020 14:19

Ask for confirmation at your 20 week scan.

It's only another 4 weeks to wait.

BertieBotts · 13/05/2020 14:20

It's not 100% accurate. That's why the NHS have a policy not to put it in writing. You just have to take it as an educated guess.

BertieBotts · 13/05/2020 14:21

16 weeks is also pretty early to be buying stuff anyway. I always change my mind :o Make a pinterest board! That's how I hold off the urges...

Hoggleludo · 13/05/2020 14:22

People do get them wrong.

However it's rare.

allinit2gether · 13/05/2020 14:26

If you have been told boy it probably is.

mecabag · 13/05/2020 14:27

It was a private gender scan. I’ve been googling boy gender 16 weeks scans and these look nothing like a boy to me? Confused Not long until my 20 week scan but wanted to be able to at least look at clothing for either gender online (I don’t want all white or yellow clothing).

Yep 😖 I was told I was having a girl and bought everything pink and fluffy to be told once I'd given birth that I had a beautiful baby boy.

I was in such shock that I didn't even want to hold him.
9 years on I can laugh but it wasn't funny at the time.

@AvoidingRealHumans What a shock that must have been for you! This is my worry. I wish I had done the harmony test now but was so sick at the time I was just trying to survive and wasn't interested in the gender.

The 3rd pic deffo looks like a boy to me. I could deffo tell my boys were boys when I had my scan I seen it before the sonographer.

radiantrose · 13/05/2020 14:36

I know someone who was told she was having a girl, never suspected otherwise until he was born a boy. I think it's very highly unlikely but it does happen.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 13/05/2020 14:36

I'm not a sonographer but that really does look like a boy to me.

Binge · 13/05/2020 14:36

They look like the scans I had 🤷🏻‍♀️, 2 boys.

AvoidingRealHumans · 13/05/2020 14:36

Yes it was a massive shock.
What got me was that in the scan my sister was with me and she pointed out what she thought, like you, was a willy and the sonographer and his trainee both said no, they are confident that baby is a girl.

holyguacamole1 · 13/05/2020 14:38

Are you a qualified sonographer?? If not then I would leave the analysis to them...Confused

Legoandloldolls · 13/05/2020 14:39

I have only been told the sex with certancy once at 20 weeks. Apart from that I either didnt want to know or they couldnt say. I had around 10 scans with my last baby. No one wanted to say for sure even at 36 weeks! But I had a harmony and that was right.
