Newborn or 0-3 months?

Almost 25 weeks and haven't bought clothing for baby. Now starting to panic as everything is selling out, I can barely find any newborn. Will I be ok with 0-3 months clothing?

Yes, unless your baby is tiny. It doesn't matter if legs are long and sleeves can be turned up. Most babies are only in newborn a couple of weeks.

LittleLittleLittle · 03/04/2020 17:21

Most people don't use newborn at all or do so for a couple of weeks as their baby is too big.

firstimemamma · 03/04/2020 17:24

You literally can't predict it op, even with growth scans etc. My niece needed Tiny Baby despite being born very near due date and there were no signs during the pregnancy of her being a small baby. Newborn drowned her.

My son on the other hand wore newborn for the grand total of 2 weeks then outgrew it!

Good luck clothes shopping Smileyou still have plenty of time.

firstimemamma · 03/04/2020 17:26

Btw in my experience Tesco always comes up very small. Maybe their 0-3m will be the equivalent of newborn? That's what I found whenever my son wore Tesco stuff anyway!

Princesspickle777 · 03/04/2020 17:27

I bought newborn and up to 1 month last time, newborn fit but was on the tight size and up to 1 month was just right. 0-3 buried her and didn’t fit until she was at least 2 months old, she wasn’t tiny either, 8lb 1!. I’ve avoided newborn this time around and gone straight for up to 1 month.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/04/2020 17:31

Both of mine started in tiny baby things then moved to newborn. One of them didn't go into 0-3m until they were about 10 weeks old. They were both fairly average weights.

Bol87 · 03/04/2020 17:32

It’s fine, they just look a bit baggy for a few weeks! 😄 My DD was 7lb14oz & is now two weeks old, she still fits nicely into newborn but I don’t have loads, so we are cycling through 0-3 as well.. she’s chubbing up now, so I expect we’ll be out of newborn by 4/5 weeks!

latheritup · 03/04/2020 17:34

We had a 7lb13oz baby, she was quite long too. Everything we had at home was 0-3 and we had to go and buy newborn. We then had to get 'up to 1 month' also which she's still in at 7 weeks.

I'd recommend a pack of baby grows in newborn and up to 1 month. They're quite cheap in the supermarkets, we loved Tesco's.

My DS was measuring big all the way through, I only bought 0-3 as I thought there was no point. On the Friday before I had him I was told to expect a 9lb+ baby. Less than 48 hours later DS arrived 4 week early weighing 6,9. I had to get people to go out to get newborn things, he didn't fit into 0-3 properly until 2.5 month

Sandsnake · 03/04/2020 17:42

DD has just moved into 0-3 months at 8 weeks, she was 7lbs2oz. She was in newborn for four weeks or so and then up to one month. DS was a similar size and very similar.

kittykat7210 · 03/04/2020 17:44

Try and find some tiny baby or newborn clothes if you can possible manage it, I took newborn, up to one month and 0-3 last time and every single size drowned her! This time I’m only taking tiny baby and 1 newborn grow!

Cherrychops100 · 03/04/2020 17:50

Following as this is really useful.

Darkstar4855 · 03/04/2020 20:10

My son was 8lb 8oz and the 0-3 stuff was massive on him! Ended up sending partner to M&S to buy 0-1 month stuff instead. Newborn fitted for the first couple of weeks.

sweetpea2811 · 03/04/2020 20:12

My little one was 7lbs 9oz at birth and wore newborn for 11 weeks!

ChanklyBore · 03/04/2020 20:16

It’s not just about birth weight. It’s about them uncurling. Lots of babies are so curled up their limbs don’t look long enough for sleeves and legs. As they gradually uncurl, they fit them better, even if they are the same weight.

Baby of seven pound ten, fitted some newborn but was mostly in 0-3 because wasn’t very curled up, and was tall (54cm when born). Put on weight quite quickly, 11lb something at 6 weeks.

Another baby, eight pound nine. Very curled up. Hard to tell how tall as a result. Didn’t put weight on easily. Fitted newborn clothes for three months, was still eight pound something at six weeks and wasnt 11lb until past four months.

Colouringinbook · 03/04/2020 20:18

9lb DS just went into 0-3, they only lasted 2 months before he out grew them.

BelfastNonBlonde · 03/04/2020 20:25

Try a mix of nb and 1 month size just to have for first few weeks. Youcan then look for bigger sized stuff to last longer when baby here

CrotchetyQuaver · 03/04/2020 20:31

I was given a couple of newborn outfits which were useful for the first 2 weeks. My babies were both 8lb, the 0-3 month stuff was a little bit big, but not that bad. Different makes come up differently of course!

Duckchick · 03/04/2020 20:37

It is worth getting a few in newborn size. DS was a long and skinny 8 lb 10 Oz. We'd only got 0-3 month and ended up having to borrow newborn size. The problem was 0-3 month was too baggy, he'd curl up into fetal position and was able to get his legs up inside the babygros - but they'd then get stuck caught up in the fabric and he couldn't straighten them. The smaller ones were less baggy so he couldn't get tangled up in them.

LittleLittleLittle · 03/04/2020 20:38

OP see if you can find people to borrow clothes off or they may give them to you. Start asking now.

My LO is now much older but I'm not panicking about having not being able to buy clothes because friends and neighbours have given me their baby clothes so she has clothes until she is 3 years old.

ChelseaCat · 03/04/2020 20:42

My baby was 6lbs 13oz when he was born and needed tiny baby clothes for ages. We had to do some panic buying once he was born as I had hardly any newborn and definitely no tiny baby (I was expecting a big one!) He’s 14 weeks now and only just grown out of John Lewis newborn sizes.

I think it depends on the shop - I found JoJo sizing to be tiny

Sewinginscotland · 03/04/2020 20:49

Mine never fit into newborn, he went straight into 1m. If you can't find newborn, 0-3 will be fine. You'll just have to roll the arms up.

Have you tried finding used bundles on Facebook marketplace? People stuck at home seem to be doing some decluttering.

But you've still got plenty of time, I don't think I bought any baby clothes until after 25 weeks. Mine lived in just 9 sleepsuits for his first month, you honestly don't need that much.

Suniscomingout · 03/04/2020 20:51

obviously with babygrows it also depends on how long they are, but with separate top and bottoms, or footless babygrows or dresses length matters less and clothes tend to last longer.

GetTheSprinkles · 03/04/2020 20:52

Mine was 50th percentile (7.3lbs) and we didnt ever use newborn clothes for him, 0-3 were perfect.
Even if clothes are a little too big, they grow so fast!

DontBuyLangClegCashmere · 03/04/2020 20:55

What area are you in OP? I have some NB stuff I would gladly pass on, if you go on your local FB page I'm sure people in your community will be willing to too!
