@purplefig thanks for the tag, omg it's so nice to see so many preggos on here! How far on are you all now? Aww I miss being pregnant! I remember the hospital bag dilemmas so well!! So my list was Huge, I packed loads but I hardly used any of it! Partly due to circumstances but I also way over packed.
For context, I had a straightforward labour and a water birth. I used a TENS machine for between contractions, a birthing ball, and that was basically it. I used breathing to get through all the contractions, nothing else really worked.
If I'd had time, I would have used some of the hypnobirthing tools I'd taken, but I spent the majority of my labour unfortunately parted from my bags, so didn't have much choice. My tips:
For labour: a comfy outfit. I put on a dress and a comfy crop top bra. (it was August though so warm enough). Easy access, and comfy. And could wear the crop top bra in the pool too.
I used a TENS machine which really helped, mainly to relax me between contractions as I found it annoying during them. I didn't wear the 2 nighties I'd got for labour, I wore the clothes I went in and just took them off when I needed to.
Drinks and snacks - take something you would usually have, and also that you like! I took coconut water. It was amazing. I also took lucozade, but would never usually have it. Tried to drink some for energy and hated it.
You definitely won't need any kind of entertainment such as kindle, headphones, tablet with films on etc. When in labour you will absolutely be unable to concentrate on anything like that, and afterwards you have a nice baby to keep your attention! Maybe take if you're being induced and expect to do a lot of waiting around though.
For after labour - absolutely essential for me:
Maternity pads
Paracetamol
Drinks and nice snacks
Phone /charger
Comfy pj's - I took button down nighties but ended up just in my knickers for most of time. They encourage skin to skin, so for breastfeeding and skin to skin, being topless was easiest. Plus I didn't want anything touching my nipples they got so sore with feeding very quickly. So maybe take pj bottoms and socks or slippers!
Dressing gown
Lanolin nipple cream!
Comfy bras
I'd say just take a couple of sets of breast pads as you don't really leak colostrum, I wore them more for comfort and padding and used one set per day.
Download an app to track feeding such as baby tracker, keeps track of which boob you fed off last, how many poos /wet nappies etc you've changed.
Nappies
Cotton wool pads - not balls. The balls are stupid. Trust me.
Swaddle blanket - I didn't take one but they swaddled the baby with towels and it helped her sleep
Toiletries
Hairdryer (felt amazing to wash my hair after)
If I'd had spritz for bits I would have taken it. My friend gave me some about a week later and it's amazing.
Feeding pillow
Things I didn't need:
Makeup (I took my full makeup bag and hair straighteners. You won't be fucked. Don't bother!)
Too many baby grows - as they encouraged skin to skin as much as possible, they wrapped baby in towels and blankets, and said don't bother putting vests on as it's faffy taking them off for skin to skin each time you feed. We only used 1 I think and it was the going home outfit.
Disposable knickers - I just wore my pregnancy knickers with the maternity pads in.
DH used the eye mask and earplugs. I didn't want to wear the earplugs as I wanted to be able to hear baby.
Ermmmm I think that's all my advice really. I'll have another look at your list and comment again if there's anything else. I'd take a lot less next time! But if in doubt, just take everything. You can always leave stuff in the car to get later if you need to.
Here's a cute pic of Olivia who is now 10 weeks old!
