Do you think girl or boy when you see this name....

Sacha....

Sorry not sure where to post this thread! I know I thought about names constantly for the last nine months so I thought I'd get most response here! DS2 born last Sunday, and as dh is Croatian we need a name that works in both english and europe. DS1 called Luka.

Sacha is known as a boys name in Europe but I don't want people constantly seeing his name and thinking he's a girl.

I'd really like to know if people's first impressions are that it is a girl's name, or if you knew it was a boys name.

Thanks!

Little Ukrainian boy in DS's class is Alexander known as Sacha - so boy.

Avery - girl.

SweetyDarling · 31/07/2007 09:20

I know one girl called SaSHa and lots of boys called SaCHa. So if spoken I would prob think boy but reserve judgement.

We are so living with this problem! We called our son Noah - a boy, right? Except here in Spain Noah would be translated as Noé, Noa (no h) is a girls name. So everyone ALWAYS assumes he´s a girl. Poor thing will have that burden his whole life. Oops

But it´s not a big deal, you explain in english (or croatian, in your case) it´s for a boy and people accept it without any hassle.

To answer your actual question - I would have thought it was a boy to see it written, to hear it I might have thought a girl at first but not have been surprised to hear it was a boy, as I know it can be used for both.

It's equally a boy or girl's name for Russians.

I wouldn't presume either way.

DANCESwithDumbledore · 31/07/2007 09:35

Girls because I knew a girl sasha but also boys because of sasha baron-cohen...either way!

sparkler · 31/07/2007 09:35

Girl

I know a woman who spells her name Sacha, which is probably why I think "girl" when I see it. I don't know of any boys with the name.

prettybird · 31/07/2007 09:40

I know someone whose boy is called Aran (husband is Albanian). Works quite well in Scotland, where it sounds a bit like the isalnd Arran. No idea if this works in Croation, or whether it would be totally in appropriate.

Mumpbump · 31/07/2007 09:40

Spelt like that, boy's name. Spelt with two s's would be the female equivalent... If you see it, it's fine, but I think the problem might be that when you hear it said, you don't know how it is spelt and I would probably assume the child was a girl unless I knew you had Eastern European connections...

geekgirl · 31/07/2007 09:43

boy, but then I'm German where Sascha (and any variations) are only ever used as a boys' name

MrsLukaKovac · 31/07/2007 10:02

Thanks all! I feel quite reassured! Think we will go for it; dh desperate to go to the registry office and finalise it!

I think it sounds more girly, however my brother is in the process of adopting from the Ukraine, and their little boy is called sacha

Dinosaur · 31/07/2007 10:27

Boy.

kyala · 31/07/2007 13:16

I knew a girl at school called Sasha and she had a boyfriend called Sacha, so it's both for me I'm afraid! LOL

It's a lovely name though

Tutter · 31/07/2007 13:17

but i know a little girl sasha too

RGPargy · 31/07/2007 13:23

I just wanted to say that Juno is the name of a brand of synthesisa (sp?) so i could never call my child Juno!!

preggersagain · 31/07/2007 13:24

love it as a boys name, quite classy. However, hate it as a girls name- shouts spoilt brat- but thats just probably due to the sasha we know who is quite plainly the biggest pita you would ever meet!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 31/07/2007 13:26

boy - because I knew a boy called Sascha

Twinkie1 · 31/07/2007 13:27

Boy - only know one boy sacha and no girls!

ktmoomoo · 31/07/2007 13:27

girls name

gogetter · 31/07/2007 13:36

either I like it as a boys name.

LaDiDaDi · 31/07/2007 13:41

Sacha is a boy, Sasha is a girl and also the name of my first pet.

3andnomore · 31/07/2007 13:53

Well in Germany Sascha( Pronounced Sasha) would really only be a Boys name....so, personally I would therefore usually think of a boy, tbh...

When on Holiday near Split a lot of boys seemed to be called Djelco ( I think that is how it was spelled...was pronounced Jelco...and I think that is a fabulous name)

Love the name Luca....what is Kovaces real name...maybe that would be good in the theme

Btw...do love Sasha/Sacha
