MrsMcJnr · 13/08/2007 10:23

Morning ladies

Hello Awen

Hello Seaside think as scampi is hot when you eat it and cooked it is ok but agree, best to spit out the bad bits I think the risk of food poisoning in pregnancies is that some bugs like salmonella and listeria can affect the baby. My Mum had listeria when she was pg with my sis, what a mess she was, her mouth was full of ulcers and she lost 2 stone I don?t think she?s eaten Camembert since! Aside from that, there is the risk of getting dehydrated. Have to say, I am being very bad on the peanut front I just love peanut butter and just had to have a star bar yesterday. The advice on peanuts varies so dramatically from book to book, I know I should really be avoiding them ? bad mother already

Bodkin hello

Hey Babymad hello, don?t be sad, you tried BF

Honeyapple hello, hope you enjoyed the cinema.

Greedy ? great advice on the tankini, seems the way to go it all does sound exhausting at the mo, poor you. Hopefully things will be sorted soon. Can I ask you a back question? Mine is killing me low down on the RHS, I have asked for a support at work in case it?s the chair but is there anything else I should try. Can?t help thinking my lack of exercise is contributing must do that exercise DVD!!

Hey Fettle hello to DD too! Sorry to hear about the spotting when you have so much else going on

Iampg ? love Drop Dead Fred things ok with DP? I got some lovely PJs from Blooming Marvellous and a T shirt I hope your appointment goes well and that you hear the HB I get scared before every one too, hence the sky high blood pressure!

Sorry have a TMI question. On Sat, I had the tiniest bit of green CM got really worried but rationalised that I didn?t have any pain, itchiness, smelliness , that I am choked with the cold and that DH and I had got fruity that morning so it was probably more related to one of those than an infection. There hasn?t been any more. Should I leave it or see someone? Thanks.

DH has agreed to a doula for the birth I have been speaking to a local one over the email and we are going to meet up for an initial chat. Do you think I am being silly? I just like the idea of someone who knows what?s what being there to support DH and I and to help him be more actively involved, I also think I?ll be more likely to have the kind of birth I want if I have someone with me who knows whether something is an option or a must. Please let me know what you think

honeyapple · 13/08/2007 11:01

Morning

Mrs- I reckon a doula would be good as long as you really like her! I think birth is such a personal thing, it is quite a big deal to involve somebody who is not part of your family IYKWIM. I am lucky because having choosen the homebirth route, I see the same midwife and she will be present at the birth... so therefore I should have quite a good relationship with her. I think you and your DH need to get as fully informed as you can about the birth and the options and discuss them so that DH knows what you would want in case you are not in a fit state to make decisions! I was totally anti drugs when I was PG with my first... and ended up with pethidine and then an epidural. (Pethidine was gross IMO BTW). I will be interested to hear how the chat goes with the doula. I think a post-natal doula would be helpful.

Cinema was so so... don't rush out to see the SImpsons movie is all I can say! DD was fairly good... a bit wiggly and jumpy but not too bad. My back was killing me by the end of the film though. Sitting down too long in an uncomfy seat. Been reading a bit about foetal postiioning and importance of sitting properly, not slouching. DD was back to back so I want to try to avoid that this time.

Seaside- glad you werent sick !

Hope all the house moving and renovations are not getting those involved down to much. Remember- IT WILL BE WORTH IT!

LOL
x

honeyapple · 13/08/2007 11:08

BTW you should all have a look at the piccie of an OP about the size of her bump... thread in PG. Should make everyone feel rather petite!

MrsMcJnr · 13/08/2007 11:32

Thanks Honeyapple I will bear all of those things in mind when I meet her. It?s just so hard to know what it will be like without any experience. I watched more of the Birth Day Girl programmes over the weekend and really want to be one of the ladies who goes with the flow, isn?t scared and is confident that her body can do it rather than one of the screamers who you can see is being counterproductive to progress because she is totally out of control and hysterical but who am I to say that! I guess with my Mum and my sisters being far away, I cannot get them to sit with me when I am in labour and give DH a break either. I agree it?s no substitute for knowing what you want and DH being fully aware. I really don?t want an epidural. I know that the risk is lessened if my labour starts a while after my last clexane injection but I don?t like the sound of the risks to me nor the idea of losing sensation in the lower half. She comes to see you post natally too.

BabyMadandBIGbump · 13/08/2007 15:33

Chooster · 13/08/2007 16:18

Hi, I reckon you are right MrsMc, see how you get on with the doula and if she can give a good idea of how a doula fits into the set-up in labour. I don't know anyone who's had one but I'd be a bit worried that my DH felt he wasn't as involved and felt a bit pushed out. Am sure they are very well practised at keeping mum and dad involved though.

Your night out at the festival sounds fantastic!!!! I dont reckon we'll make it to any shows this year. That would be great to speak to your sis - see if she has any tips for stopping LO from spitting the gaviscon back out

Bodders - Theo sounds about the same as your posset-monster in terms of being sick. I also had a look on MN about reflux and there are some awful stories of babies who wouldn't sleep at all through the day and were in loads of pain, which is not like Theo at all, thank God. I reckon he must just have it really mild and the gaviscon is defiately helping with the acid pain.

We didn't try to amby in the end Honeyapple. We had it all built in in another room and I have to make space in our room for it to be moved in, and just ran out of time. But we are off to my mums tomorrow for a few days and we have it packed up to take with us. It folds down fairly small but is bigger than I imagined then its up. Having said that will fit by the side of our bed which is about 3ft gap? I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Iampg - sounds like you and DP are getting on a little better?! Your lazy day sounds great! . Its tricky on whether a moses basket is good or not. It can be the best money you spend as it's handy in principle - provided your LO sleeps well in it. Neither of my DS's have slept well in ours. DS1 was in his cot at 2 weeks and DS2 is in our bed every night now until I get the amby hammock up. I too worried about squashing the LO in bed but you will have the same in built baby protection as all mums and it wont be an issue. I usually wriggle a lot (I think) but dont move a muscle when I'm with DS2. We've got a super king size bed so I put Theo on my side so I'm in the middle - Its not that I dont trust DH but sometimes he doesn't know when I've brought Theo into bed so I dont want a stray elbow to land on his little head. Is there anyone you can borrow a moses basket from? You are more than welcome to ours!!!

Glad you didn't succumb to any dodgy scampi Seaside!!!! Like the others I've been really lax with avoiding the 'naughty' list of food as I've had prawns, camambert etc when PG. No harm done....

Greeds - Sounds like a nightmare for you - I really do empathise!!! Its awful when you feel you are constantly having to tell DD / DS not to do things / touch things. You feel like you are on their case all the time. It will all get better soon!

How's things for you fettle - thinking of you too with the move. Your DD sounds fantastic!!! A real star.

Hope you nether regions are not getting rid of any more green gunk MrsMc - I'd imagine its a one off as you have no pain / itching etc - maybe just keep an eye on it and see what happens. I had this quite a bit and the midwives were not concerned.

Ooopps, Theo waking - I'll be back!!!

Chooster · 13/08/2007 16:27

Good birth story babymad!!! All sounds fairly tough at times. Well done

honeyapple · 13/08/2007 18:49

Great birth story babymad . I just can't imagine that be being me yet! Mind you I've only got 7 weeks until I am officially full term . DP today said... "are you sure you want a home birth?" and has put a few doubts in my head. I reckon I am going to see how it goes. So the birthing ball has the thumbs up though? Might have to get one meself... Actually I think DP is just worried about the gunk everywhere! So just HOW messy was it? I don't remember that much mess at hospital...

Chooster- keep me informed with the amby progress!

Have a real sore tum today. Really achy around the bottom half . Feels so stretched... I'm blaming the big head. Seeing MW on weds... wonder if I am bigger than dates .

Bodkin · 14/08/2007 10:55

Cor, its taken me so long to catch up I've barley got time to post...

Hello everyone!

Chooster - what is it about moses baskets eh? babies basically just don't like them do they

Honeyapple - i had a last minute wobble about having a homebirth, but my god I am sooooooooooooo glad I did. It was amazing. Yes there was a bit of mess, but as long as you have a few old towels you don't mind sacrificing then it's fine. The only visible reminders of a homebirth now are 4 very faint blood spots on the bathroom carpet from when I got out of my post-birth bath (bliss) which I have "Vanished" so really only I know they are there (I quite like them acutally [weird]) And the room in which I gave birth has a huge white sofa in, which I sat on after giving birth - not a speck on it (phew!) So what I am saying is - definitely keep your options open. It is so much more relaxing at home and you are much more able to "go with the flo" of the labour. Don't know if being at home helped with the speed of my birth, but I guess because I was relaxed I just got on with it iyswim.

Fettle - poor homel

doorbell, gotta go

MrsMcJnr · 14/08/2007 11:26

Hey ladies how are we today? I?m 18 weeks today

Babymad ? lovely story I?ve posted for you on your thread

Chooster hello you! We?re meeting the doula on Sat am, can?t wait she sounds so nice. I am making a list of all the reasons I?d like to have one and one of the main reasons is to support DH too. He isn?t good when I am stressed and it makes him edgy and cross with me and I don?t want us to fight when we are in labour just because of the fear/excitement of it all. I think a doula would help him take a more active role. I?ve explained to him that I would like her to help enhance his role not diminish that and I think he understands that Have a lovely time at your Mum?s get some well earned rests and walks on that beach No more gunk thankfully!

Iampg ? don?t know how I missed your chat on Moses baskets we are definitely going for one as are reluctant to buy a cot before we move. I?ve been talking to a few people recently who?ve had good experiences but I know that the are those that it hasn?t worked out for. They are so cheap, we saw them in Makro for £29, they were Mamas & Papas ones too.

Honeyapple only 7 weeks wow! I?ve heard so many good stories about birthing balls helping to bring the baby down, I plan to make use of my gym ball (has never been used for much else ? got it in Tesco for £2.99 and there appears to be no difference to a birthing ball (I even started a thread on that question!) Sorry your tum hurts

Bodkin ? reading your post made me really want to have my baby at home but I don?t think I should with my first, I also don?t know where home will be and I think it would freak my pussy cats out!!

Can I ask you experienced ladies ? what are your views on actively managed 3rd stage v physiological 3rd stage and on the clamping of the cord?

BabyMadandBIGbump · 14/08/2007 12:17

Hi Ladies and thanks

honeyapple yes the birthing ball was great, HB- the mess was bad DH said it was a sea of blood (I was shocked looking at it I thought must be dieing) but not every birth is the same, DS#2 birth there was hardly any blood at all and we both expected it to be the same but NO, plus it didn't help that MW's weren't ready for me, but I just wanted her OUT! It was lovely from my DH and DC point of view. One thing I would say is "Take the G&A" I wish I had I might not have felt so bleeding shell shocked afterwards!

Back soon (I hope)

OP posts:
honeyapple · 14/08/2007 14:21

Mrs- I think it is pretty standard in hospitals to have an injection to help with the placenta.... although I have absolutely no recollection of this having been done as I was just rather spaced out having just pushed LOs out! I wouldnt really fancy sitting around for hours waiting for it to come out naturally- I think there is a greater risk of it not coming away whole?? Where that idea came from I dont know?

As for cord clamping- both my DC had those horrid plastic clamps which are again standard practice in hospitals. I am hoping to suggest to my MW that we use a bit of thread to tie this LO cord with. Might be worth starting a thread about...

Babymad- yep I think I will be having G&A! Will have to get a ball too.

Bodkin- thanks for the HB reassurance. The bath sounds great.

DC are driving me potty with their bickering at the moment.

Hi to everyone else x

MrsMcJnr · 14/08/2007 15:43

Intesresting debate on it all here Honeyapple www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1365&threadid=368155&stamp=070808222815 I read the link to the article and think (at the mo anyway) that I'll be asking for a physiological third stage with the cord clamped either after the placenta is delivered or at least, when it stops pulsating, no drugs unless there is a real need and for them not to pull on the cord or use fundal pressure unless there is a specific indication to do so (this is contra indicated in drug free third stages) my feeling being that I want the baby to get the best it can from the placenta, the injection can make some people very sick and if you've gone that far without drugs that make you sick it would be really annoying to then get given some. Also, you can opt to have the injection at any point if the delivery is taking too long. But hey what do I know?

greedygreedyguzzler · 14/08/2007 15:51

fettle - you are a doughnut!!!! i SAID i had weighed my boobs and that they must weigh at least a stone!!! how could you have missed that!!! hope you are all moved in now. will dd take a while to settle in, or is she pretty good with change? i am panicking a bit that my dd will take a while to get used to her new bedroom........................if she ever gets in there!!!!

the latest on our extension (cos i KNOW you are all desperate to know!!!) is that my darling FIL had a big row with the builder who has now threatened to walk off site!!! FANTASTIC!!!! just what we need before we have a new baby!!! i could murder my 'helpful' FIL sometimes......and now he has had to rush back home leaving a million unfinished jobs for me and dh to do and we are both hopeless at DIY and dont have a clue!!!!

BUT, on the bright side...............i have finished my bunting and it looks FAB!!!! wonderweb is an amazing invention!!! and i willbe......how can you NOT know what bunting is!!! it is the new trend in little girls bedroom decor!!!!! (in the next catalogue anyway!!!).....think triangular flags and street parties!!!

mrs - re your back. it sounds like normal pg aches and pains to me im afraid. the extra weight and shift in gravity all have a big effect on your sacroiliac joints (SIJ) at the back of your pelvis. the hormone relaxin that your body releases when pg makes your ligaments all loose and stretchy and the SIJs tend to suffer i am afraid. obviously i am going to say that chiropractic could help, cos it could!!!! bit far to caome and see me though!!! although i would think i am well worth the visit!!! a lumbar support in your chair at work could help and try and make sure you sit with your pelvis rolled forward and your knees lower than your pelvis so that your thighs slant downwards IYSWIM!!! if it develops anymore then an SI belt might help.
my opinion on a doula might not be what you want to hear!!!! i think giving birth for the first time is such an amazing, incredible, personal experience (and slightly painful, obvioulsy!!) that it is really something lovely for you and your dh to share. my dh and i went to NCT classes and learnt everything we could about the birthing process (as i am sure you will). and my dh was FANTASTIC at takling me through my breathing and keeping me calm etc. he was better than any doula could ever have been and personally i would of hated another stranger interfering as well as the multiple mws and student mw! BUT having said that.........lots of peole swear by them and think they are the best thing ever!!!!
mrs - just read further and seen your next question about third stage of labour. i wouldnt worry about it too much! i had the injection first time to help the placenta out, but second time the mw didnt want to give it to me! she said "it seems such a shame to give you drugs when you have given birth naturally without any and she just kind of tugged it out!!!! THAT was a horrible feeling.........a bit like removeing a tampax that isnt full enough when it feels like your insides are being dragged out! but, i think that is cos she didnt even wait for me to have a contraction, she just pulled it out herself. i dont personally think it makes much difference what you do!

honeyapple - i heard to get baby into the optimum position you should crawl around on all fours and make a 'hammock' with your tummy!!! oh, and lie on your left hand side to sleep, but i never did that!!! oh and i loved my birthing ball in the past and will be bouncing around on it again soon!!!!! just to give dh a laugh really!

bodders - you have made me want a homebirth again now, but then babymad has put me off a bit!!! i am convinced that this lo will pop out at home anyway without us wanting it to!!! just a strange feeling i have!!!

greedygreedyguzzler · 14/08/2007 15:53

HOW many spelling mistakes!!!

honeyapple · 14/08/2007 15:56

Interesting Mrs. However I tend to agree with the end concensus that TBH it didnt really bother me... was too happy about having baby in my arms to be worrying about delivery of placenta. Just felt it was something that had to be done before I could get up and go and have a wash! Funny that I really cannot remember having injection... just presuming that I did. I remember MW showing me the placenta... and I was like... Mmmm that is pretty gross... dont really want to have that in my face! Be interesting what Bodders etc did...

honeyapple · 14/08/2007 16:01

Hi Greedy!
Glad your bunting has gone well.... what material did you choose? Old granny pants?

Tend to agree with you re the doula. But my DP was rubbish! I think he just wanted it all to be other with as quickly as possible. He was good at being something to hang off though... tis a strong lad!

I reckon thinking back that with DD I didnt have injection for placenta... I remember MW just yanked it out... felt a bit grim as was sitting in me vag for a bit. nice.

honeyapple · 14/08/2007 16:02

sorry for the gross description

greedygreedyguzzler · 14/08/2007 16:05

honeyapple - my dh had started videoing already when the midwife was examining the placenta and so he has got her on camera showing me this gross bloody placenta and me sounding and looking really genuinely interested! it makes me laugh when i watch it now that i was apparently more interested in the placenta then my new baby!!!
just looked at that picture of that OPs bump! OMG!!!!! i have NEVER seen anything like it!!!!!!

greedygreedyguzzler · 14/08/2007 16:07

honeyapple - i LIKED your gross description!!! did you like my tampon analogy?

honeyapple · 14/08/2007 16:07

Placentas are amazing... just bloody ugly!
That women's tum is bizarre to say the least. It must be SOOOO painful.

honeyapple · 14/08/2007 16:08

Yeah the tampon was a good un.

MrsMcJnr · 14/08/2007 16:11

Greedy ? sorry to hear about your FIL and the builder! Thanks for the back tips, that was what I was worrying about. I also have hypermobility in my joints so suspect that doesn?t help. I was delighted to hear how I should be sitting, that?s exactly what I am doing now I have my support thanks hon! If you ever need any free legal advice (caveat: in my limited sphere of expertise?) thanks for your opinion on the doula too, it is interesting to hear all views and on the third stage .. so many questions from me! Tampon analogy was good ? we all know what that feels like!!

Honeyapple ? I know what you mean about the placenta, I?m not that interested in it (bit mean after it?s done all that work) but it will be bloody and goey and kind of gross I?m sure. In HK people take them home and cook them and even worse, some Chinese doctors take home other people?s and eat them some say it wards off post natal depression if you eat your own and I saw some programme on TV where the woman made stroganoff for the whole family ? eeeuuch!
