Have mentioned this on the Sept. thread already, but what do you all prefer out of Freya and Flora? I'm finding it really hard to decide! We both love Freya but it's getting really popular now and that puts me off, as I grew up with a really common name, which I hated... I think I almost prefer Flora but is it too unusual? And it seems like a name that's adorable on a 3 year old but odd on a grown woman, would you agree? DH says Flora just reminds him of the margarine, but that doesn't really bother me... interested in what the masses think

Freya

Although I know of one Freya I don't think it is that popular to be a problem.

EnidJane · 09/07/2007 10:27

neither

BonyM · 09/07/2007 10:29

Freya is lovely, does it really matter if it's popular?

DD2's name is also rather popular but it was the only one that dh and I could agree on and tbh the only reason I wasn't 100% keen on it was because it was popular. At the end of the day though it seemed daft not to give her the name we liked just for that reason.

I do like Flora as well, but as you say, although lovely on a little one, it sounds a bit frumpy on a grown woman imo.

MrsBadger · 09/07/2007 10:29

I like Flora and know several (some older than me)
Freya is pretty but very popular in that nebulous 'currently-popular' way that will immediately pinpoint the age of the child, rather than the consistently-popular of Emily, Lucy etc.

TaylorsMummy · 09/07/2007 10:42

freya. i don't like flora, reminds me of the margarine

claraq · 09/07/2007 10:47

I really like Freya too and it is on our list as we think it is or at least sounds nordic and we have a Viking surname! But also slightly worried about the popularity of it.

Flora sounds a bit old to me. And margarinish. But it is pretty.

Florence is nice and I love it shortened to Flo BUT we're put off by the term Aunt
Flo(w) - one day she might be an Aunt and then what???

WendyWeberSybil · 09/07/2007 10:51

If you want an F, have lovely Frances

LoveAngel · 09/07/2007 11:27

Freya is lovely but very common these days - as long as you don't mind that?

Flora - I'm sorry, I just think of the margarine.

cece · 09/07/2007 11:30

I like both but how about Florie? I know one and she is lovely.

collisionfrances · 09/07/2007 11:30

Freya

Flora is marg!

What about Fleur?

collisionfrances · 09/07/2007 11:30

Florrie is a Fimble ....sorry!

choosyfloosy · 09/07/2007 11:33

Flora

I do like Freya but keep thinking about that chicklit book

cece · 09/07/2007 11:34

Oh I didn't know that - we don't watch the Fimbles!?

PestoMonster · 09/07/2007 11:34

I prefer Fleur.

evenhope · 09/07/2007 11:39

Flora isn't odd on a grown woman- it was my grandma's name and she was a grown woman all the time I knew her!

bubblesbabe · 09/07/2007 11:41

definitely flora!

MadamePlatypus · 09/07/2007 11:48

Has this actually helped you Tinkjon?

Dawn2820 · 09/07/2007 12:46

Out of the 2 i would say Freya.

but i like Freyana

tortoiseSHELL · 09/07/2007 12:46

I much prefer Flora.

tortoiseSHELL · 09/07/2007 12:47

Agree, Florence is even nicer!

Tinkjon · 09/07/2007 14:33

Oooh, what a great response - thanks so much everyone! Seems like it's about 50/50 so far.

Pirategirl, no it doesn't have to begin with an F - it's just coincidence that my 2 fave girls names start with the same letter.

PiusIX, what do you mean by Freya being a 30s throwback? Was it a name in the 30s then?

BonyM, no it doesn't really matter if a name is too popular - it's just that I grew up hating my name because it was so common (I was one of 3 in my class). Of course I don't want to go too far the other way by picking a name that's unheard of though!) MrsBadger, you summed it up perfectly, that it's popular in an 'of the time' way, rather than in a classically popular way, like Elizabeth. I don't want a trendy name and Freya could easily become that.

Oooh, Wendy, Frances is a lovely name!

Don't like Freda/Fleur, I'm afraid.

Thanks again, everybody!

Flora

Strawberryfair · 09/07/2007 14:37

Why not try Freira, Freya, Floria or Florita!
Avoids the common name and the margarine!

mum2george · 09/07/2007 16:40

Tinkjon, can beat that one, mine name was "of the time" too and I was one of 5 in my class and one of 5 at work. Very confusing and very annoying. Hardly ever respond when someone says my name at work 'cos 4 out of 5 times it won't be me they want!

meandmyflyingmachine · 09/07/2007 16:44

Much prefer Flora.
