Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

LOL LOL Jeremy!!!
Sorry muppetgirl, the post wasn't yours, it was wulfric's (love the names!!!)

lisad123 · 07/07/2007 20:32

LOL Wulf, funny that we have choosen Jasmine as our LO name when she is born. Better make sure i spelt it right

Everyone has to ask how to spell my dd name, woops

tribpot · 07/07/2007 20:36

I was going to cite the example of Oprah. Her name was indeed meant to be Orpah (Biblical) but her mum got it wrong.

Anna8888 · 07/07/2007 20:42

There is nothing clever or original about spelling names incorrectly - it just looks silly and ignorant and, although it is the parents that were silly and ignorant, the child who bears the name will have that silliness and ignorance projected upon him/her.

Why on earth would any parent want to do this to his/her child?

lisad123 · 07/07/2007 20:44

But it isnt spelling it wrong, who decides which way names are spelt?? Also I thought Connor with a K was still listed in name book, so parent not spelling it wrong, but choosing less common spelling.

SquirdleAKACandDsmummy · 07/07/2007 21:05

I really don't like names which are deliberately mis-spelt. Or made up names.

DS2 is Caleb. Dh wanted it to be spelt 'Kaleb' but I said NO WAY!! I love his name, but would hate it spelt with a K!

DS3 is Dylan and yes he has also had it spelt 'Dylon' 'Dillon' and 'Dillion' at nursery....not for long!!

My name is Rebekah which is actually the correct spelling but I do spend my life saying 'It's Rebekah with kah instead of cca!' Saying that it is worth the hassle as I much prefer it spelt my way!

I would have to go for Connor, but as it isn't an option would say 2 n's.

Ooh now on CBeebies birthday card time yesterday there was a card for 'Nitalia' Now thats mean!

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:07

Connor

spelling it wrong is a sign of stupidity not edginess

(I shall now read thread)

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:10

I've read a few posts

have to say that Karl is a name

Konor / Konnor is just plain idiocy I'm afraid

also it is a bit daft to have children with the same initial because when they're older they'll start to get post

Mr K Whatever .. which one would that be for then?

tribpot · 07/07/2007 21:10

I think that's a good point, and we seem to have an 'acceptable' level of spelling variation, and an 'unacceptable' one. (For me personally, Britney is on the unacceptable list, not that I would call a child Brittany but if I did I would spell it right). I will freely admit to belonging to the school of thought that "wacky" name variations are generally tragic (and bear in mind I have a friend with a dd called Coco - there's nothing to be done with that).

I don't believe anyone would suggest there was a precise correlation between 'dodgy name' and 'dodgy socioeconomic future' (cf Oprah) but rather that in general the sort of person likely to be unable to spell a name 'correctly' is also likely to be in a socioeconomic group with limited means/opportunities. In effect, you could call your child Sebastian and still if you're poor, he's going to have a similar projected trajectory to a child called Konnor.

Also, look at Colin Powell. Name spelt right, parents still unable to grasp how Colin is pronounced.

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:11

How exactly are you pronouncing Michal

is it Mi-shal?

tribpot · 07/07/2007 21:12

Twig - from original post: Mehal.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 21:16

Trib, correct I shall pronounce it the way my dads name was pronounced. Mehal

WinnieThePooh · 07/07/2007 21:16

The OP was just asking whether to go with 1 N or 2, not your opinions on the initial letter.

Personally, I think it should have 2 N's. DP and I have an unusual name in mind for DD2 who is due in October. I will not post it on here as I DO NOT CARE what you lot of think. It is DP's choice and I also like it. I have only found it in 1 baby name book, that came free with a baby magazine I bought when expecting DD1 (Lauren) 5 years ago.

It is down to the parents , what they name their child.

My own name is spelt differently from the majority and I use a shortened version for most things. On Official Docments (driving licence, passport, etc) I use my full name. DP's surname, (which is the name our children use) is also spelt differentyly and I need to spell it out every time I use it.

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 21:20

My son is called Oliver

...so is every other b**rd's kid atm.

I fancy something different for ds2 due in oct/nov

Oh and ds starts his school in sept (private) along with 'lorcan', 'dearie' (SP?) etc.

TaylorsMummy · 07/07/2007 21:22

i would go for Connor too. Konor/Konnor is pointless imo.it's not an unusual name,it's just going to make you look like you can't spell if you want something unusual, chose something unusual, not take a common name and spell it wrong.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 21:24

oh dear people seem to have a problem understanding that Konnor spelt that way is not spelt wrong but is a variation of connor. the question was 1 or 2 N's nothing more and nothing less..... and posters have had the cheek to class me as ignorant when they can't grasp the question ohhh dear

OP posts:
Twinklemegan · 07/07/2007 21:25

Nothing wrong at all with unusual names (mine is very unusual if it comes to that, but it IS real). It's made up names that people have problems with. And IME it is VERY annoying having to spell one's name time and time again and still having people get it wrong because they can't be bothered to read it properly.

TaylorsMummy · 07/07/2007 21:26

we did grasp the question, but seeing as you posted,we are entitled to an opinion, which is that the name is spelt wrong and that you will appear stupid/ignorant whatever if you spell it that way

Twinklemegan · 07/07/2007 21:26

Where is it a variation? Is it an earlier version? Or from a different country?

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 21:27

And others appear stupid/ignorant if they cannot grasp it is a VARIATION not a mis-spelling....go and look it up.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 07/07/2007 21:28

Agree with the majority on here Connor instead of Konnor, it just looks better when typed out too.

I have 2 common 1970s names with a hyphen so becomin an unusual name, people usually shorten it without asking, the hyphen is an utter nightmare when filling in forms and it's just PITA having to spell your name all the time.

DD2's name can have 3 spellings but we chose the easiest way so not to confuse people!

tribpot · 07/07/2007 21:28

muppet - I recommend Ronok, my newly-patented Klingon name

SquirdleAKACandDsmummy · 07/07/2007 21:28

I'm not sure anyone was telling OP she shouldn't use a 'K' I think many people here would say each to their own. People are just voicing their own preferences. If I loved a name I wouldn't care what anyone else thought of how I chose to spell it, I would still use it.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with Konnor/Konor, I just wouldn't choose to spell it that way. But it's your baby, your choice! I'm sure like people have said before Konnor/Konor probably wouldn't even get a raised eyebrow at school with some of the more shall i say unusual names about now!

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 21:29

When my Connor started school (had previously been at a SN nursery) another mum went up to the teacher shouting that they had spelt her Coner's name wrong (upon seeing my Connor's peg name) There was many versions of Connor anyway.

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:29

No LadyEveningStar I'm afraid you're wrong

Connor's origin is celtic / gaelic

Konnor does not exist as a name apart from people trying to be edgy by spelling Connor wrong ..

but its your baby and patently your decision

he'll end up calling himself something different anyway
