Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

You spell the name your way, but you did ask for opinions...

I think both names look made up. In my job, I daily have to look up people's records. With children today, you can assume nothing regarding the spelling of names!

Yes he will constantly go through life spelling his name but if you can live with that, you can live with passing that on to him, and you absolutely must go with one of the 'K' spellings, Konnor.

MrsScavo · 07/07/2007 18:23

If you are going with a k, then Konnor.

Surely Konor would be pronounced kow-nor?

tribpot · 07/07/2007 18:59

What about Ronok? I'm sure there aren't many people called that. Sounds like a Klingon. Hmm, or what about 'Klingon'?

LWandLottie · 07/07/2007 19:01

Have to go with the majority and say I think Connor looks better. I totally understand you wanting to be a little bit different but I do think it looks slighlty odd spelt with a K. Must say I'm not a huge fan of making a name sound or look more unusaul by changing the spelling. IMO if you want to be different and have an unusual name than pick an unusual name that's 'different'.

However you asked if we thought it should be 1 N or 2, so I'd have to say Konnor. At the end of the day it's your choice and what everybody else thinks shouldn't matter. If you want it with a K and 1 N then go for it

tribpot · 07/07/2007 19:04

Good point LW - what about a Polish first name to go with the Polish middlename? (Or perhaps just pretend Konnor is the Polish for Connor?!) I have Polish friends with the usual array of sz's in their name, I assume they get used to it being spelt wrong when abroad. Mind you, I have a Dutch friend whose surname is van de Wetering
and I got told off for spelling it van der as I had another Dutch friend with the surname van der Woude. Am I really expected to be able to remember stuff like that?! (I guess so).

lilolilmanchester · 07/07/2007 19:05

Probably been said already but... You go with whichever way of spelling the name you prefer BUT get used to the idea of people spelling it incorrectly and teach him from an early age not to be too sensitive about it either. Oh, and it might seem trivial to you now, but he'll never get a mug/keyring/pencil with his name on it. Doesn't bother me at all, but annoys my DCs (who both have very normal names with normal spelling, but DS has a Welsh name and DD's name has been overtaken by a trendier longer version.)

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 19:31

Doesn't bother my ds either who has never been able to get anything in a shop with his name on. The personalised things he has had are what I have ordered from catalogues...as with my own name.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 07/07/2007 19:32

DD has a very normal name - Mollie - but she can still not get anything with her name on it. Always spelt Molly.

Hulababy · 07/07/2007 19:33

Oh and another verion of Connor to throw in. Seen another version for a boy once:

Konaire

tribpot · 07/07/2007 19:50

Hula - like the film with Nicolas (note spelling) Cage in? Conair!

I could never get anything with my name on as a child, despite it being a 'proper' (ish) name - actually a very old nickname for Ann. The main problem was in Spain where the c was pronounced TH, although in Sweden my surname once turned into Thickling!

Aitch · 07/07/2007 19:50

is part of this that you want to have two children whose names begin with K? isn't there another one? because there is something really weird about the way Konnor looks on the page. it looks as if you just can't spell, iykwim, whereas Karl looks intentional because it is a proper way of spelling it.

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 19:56

Roisin

My nephew is called Xavier, how do you think he will turn out based on your clear impression that names determine class and intelligence, oh and also ability to parent.

Or is it not the 'unusualness' of the name more the spelling that alludes to the above?

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 19:57

Aitch it had nothing to do with the fact i wanted children whose names have same initial. At the end of all this I am sticking with Konnor and thats the way I shall spell it. Many names don't look right on paper....doesn't mean they aren't right though.

OP posts:
tribpot · 07/07/2007 19:58

Xavier is very posh, I predict he will be a future prime minister! (Although might have to shorten it to Xav in a Blair stylee). Although if his parents think it's pronounced 'eks-ay-vee-er' that would count against them

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 19:59

no it's zay-vier!

..anyone else like a guess?

tribpot · 07/07/2007 20:02

Don't worry - I know how it's pronounced. The Spanish version (Javier) is quite a common name (in Spain anyway). I think it'd be great to have a name that started with X, maybe Xonnor (pronounced 'zonner') is the way forward?

tribot -his middle name is genaro! And with the surname Currill (They live in another county) he's got it made...

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 20:03

tribpot sorry

purpleduck · 07/07/2007 20:16

Konor to me seems like it should be pronounced CONE AR which in turn reminds me of CONAR THE BARBARIAN (starring Arnold Schwartenegger) Or is than Conan.... soory, I like the idea of spelling it with a K bit def 2 n's !!!

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 20:18

Purple, yes i have settled with the K and 2 N's.....

Konnor Michal

I like it

Muppetgirl -
interesting study, but I remember hearing that Oprah's name was misspelled on her birth certificate, she should have been Orpah or something. I did wonder if she would have been as successful if she was not Oprah....

JeremyJayneVile · 07/07/2007 20:24

Hijack
(PurpleDuck -
On active convos page whenever your name is next to a thread title as the last poster, cos its really little writing i see it as 'Purpledick'.....everytime, it just jumps out at me )

Sarahjct · 07/07/2007 20:24

If it's just a different spelling of the name you want, try the actual Irish spellings - Conchúir or Conchobhair

They're different, no one'll be able to spell them (even in Ireland!) but they're not made up and they're very old spellings ...

cece · 07/07/2007 20:25

My mum's name was mispelt on birth certificate. Should have been Helen but ended up as Ellen. My Gran didn't like it so they used her middle name - still known by her middle name even now.
