Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

well no, LES. people do assume a lot of things from the way people look, the way they act, their name etc etc etc.

it's life, that's all. much as you might disagree with the fairness or otherwise, prposely mis-spelling your child's name is not the place to start that battle imo.

MrsFish · 08/07/2007 13:00

Kerrymum - if she goes with the two 'n's, which is how Connor is generally spelt she won't have to spell it all out. IMO anyway

I always have to spell my surname. My sister is a Katy (not Katie). My brother is a Jonathan (not Jonathon). In fact all of my family apart from me have common names that have common variants, which means that they have to specify the spelling. It. Is. Not. A. Big. Deal.

Aitch, but that is showing other peoples ignorance. I have an unusual name and never got judged on it, My ds1's name is spelt differently he is not judged on it. And if people judge on appearence then they are at fault not us. mind you didn't think anything was wrong with our appearence lol

well, not if there is a sudden rash of Konors with one n, he won't. Karl is a proper name, remember, Konnor isn't. i hereby bet you anything that he will have to spell the name out its entirety for his whole life. plenty of people with perfectly ordinary names have told you that below, by the way.

KerryMum: this is going to sound snotty, but it's not meant to be. If having to spell your name can be classed as an annoyance in your life, then your a lucky woman.

meandmyflyingmachine · 08/07/2007 13:06

Lots of names that are now considered common place were "made up" or at least appropriated at some point in the not too distant past.

I'm not saying there will suddenly be a swathe of Konors, but still...

This thread makes pretty awful reading actually.

Aitch · 08/07/2007 13:06

LES, Karl is a normal, proper name. it just isn't the same as Konnor, which has only been in existence for a few years in America, the home of naff names.
i'd love to know what your name is, because you're clearly not getting the difference between an unusual name (Michal, swoonsomely lovely) and a peculiar mis-spelling of a name.
My friend, for example, is a Basia (pron Basha) it's lovely and unusual and real so people would only think ooooh how excitingly foreign.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/07/2007 13:07

I have also spent my life spelling out my first and surname, it hasn't caused me any problems. I am not affected by it. DS1 has to spell his first and surname he isn't harmed by it either.

aah, mollycoddle, the old 'if that's the only annoyance in your life you're a lucky woman' pointless top-trump... good to see it back. [yawn]

lol, well that's a show-stopper i must admit. i've got to say, Vaunda is a unique-sounding name, but it does sound right in itself. in a way that Konnor doesn't, tbh. in a way that Vaoonda wouldn't either. But Vonda ir Vhaunda might. do you know what i mean?

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/07/2007 13:12

Kerry, I asked a simple question but obviously it was too difficult for some to understand I had made my mind up on the name and it was just one part we as a couple couldn't agree on. However I have also stated I am spelling ds2's name with 2 N's again I wasn't asking for opinions on what people thought of OUR choice of spelling with a K rather than a C. But people are entitled to give their opinions, no need to get personal which some have done.

OP posts:
meandmyflyingmachine · 08/07/2007 13:13

To be fair to the OP, she asked whether it should be spelt Konor or Konnor.

Not whether it was naff.

People have offered that opinion off their own bat.

So having a go at her for not changing her mind over whether she should name her child what she wants to name him is a bit off. As she wasn't asking for your opinion on that in the first place.

Aitch · 08/07/2007 13:13

ah no, kerrymum, it was mollycoddle who said that, not LES. she's been the epitome of decorum and good sportishness for the absolute most part, to be fair.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/07/2007 13:14

Aitch, do you honestly think that everytime I speak to someone I am going to say "this is Konnor with a K"? I will do that when filling in forms etc BUT on the whole ds2 will be known as Konnor pronounced the same as Connor. So not any differene there.
