Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

Konnor rare??
My arse!

Every other kid in Crosby, Bootle,Prestatyn,Rhyl and Colwyn Bay is called Konner.

Believe me,I see hundreds of school registers.

I know this stuff.

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 21:42

I chose Connor when there wasn't 100s of them, suddenly there was loads!! 3 Connors (Coner, Conor) in his year alone. Now I hear it everywhere

edam · 07/07/2007 21:43

I could decide to call my baby Freddie but in an attempt to be different spell it Phreddee. And get it to appear on some dumb baby names website as a variation - it would still be a spelling mistake though.

MrsFish · 07/07/2007 21:43

Well I have read the topic from the start before posting and you know what....?

Konnor doesn't look wrong now, I've got used to it Also what so difficult about saying my names Konnor with a 'K'. It definitely needs the two 'n's though.

One good point that was made a few posts down though was when they are older and get the post, and they both have the initial 'K' it could get a bit confusing

murcimari · 07/07/2007 21:43

TLE ? you?d be better off taking a break from your computer now...after all you?re pregnant and the last thing you need is to worry yourself over such opinionated comments from people you don?t know from Eve.
Some of them say that if you want to be different, choose an unusual name rather than take a well-known name and simply spell it the way you like it. Well, it really doesn?t matter, as not long ago I?ve opened a thread about an unusual name we were considering for our unborn child and I too got some nasty comments...so it really is a ?lose lose? situation on an online forum like this.

j20baby · 07/07/2007 21:43

can't believe this is still going on

have a look here

MhamaiJane · 07/07/2007 21:44

Ds goes to school with a Connor O'Connor, now that's just plain cruel.

j20baby · 07/07/2007 21:46

also i agree with mercy, i can't understand why a lot of people are being so aggrssive with their thoughts on the name and to say that children's intelligence is affevcted by there names is a load of shit

edam · 07/07/2007 21:47

TheLady, all those sites mean is that more than one person has mucked about with a perfectly good name. Doesn't make it right.

I mean, how likely is it that some baby names website employs etymologists from the OED working in their spare time?

My name is always a good test of a baby names site, as it happens - if they claim it is a variant of another much more popular name you know they are just guessing that names that contain the same syllable are identical.

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:47

Bollocks LadyEveningStar

the fact that Konner first appeared in late 1990s in the US and has become a rarely used name makes me believe some American spelt it wrongly to be edgy or through stupidity (Americans tend to spell phonetically) and others caught on and now its made it over the atlantic

you can call your child anything you want .. personally wouldn't saddle a kid with a name with a spelling mistake .. but then I'm a pedant

anyhoo I've moved on to Cone-er .. ROFL

Twinklemegan · 07/07/2007 21:47

Yes I saw that site. The name Konnor on there has a different meaning from that given for Connor

TLE - don't take it to heart. FWIW, I don't think I'd have posted about my intended names for fear of snide comments. Your baby boy will be absolutely gorgeous no matter what his name is, and the final choice is yours of course.

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 21:48

J20- just put in oliver in that website -there are 11 variants!!!

Needless to say it's quite common....

MrsBadger · 07/07/2007 21:48

No-one ever said their intelligence is determined by their name.
In fact the suggestion was that the complete opposite was the case.

EnidJane · 07/07/2007 21:49

oi badge when's your baby due

Twinklemegan · 07/07/2007 21:50

J20baby - I think the implication was that, in general, the fact that a child's name is spelt wrongly may be an indicator of the parents' level of education which in itself may affect the child's future success. [I am generalising TLE, I'm not referring to you]

MrsBadger · 07/07/2007 21:50

22nd Aug (home straight)

moondog · 07/07/2007 21:50

If only done with one 'n' then he will be taunted for years with rhymes such as

Koner has a boner.

Not great for one's mental health I feel.

SquirdleAKACandDsmummy · 07/07/2007 21:50

Saves him learning how to spell 2 names I suppose!!

I don't think anyone is being nasty honestly and TLE has already said she doesn't care what we think, she will still call her baby Konnor/Konor and rightly so.

You will get peoples opinions here, it's kind of what Mumsnet is about isn't it?

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:50

yabbut

CONE-ER

muppetgirl · 07/07/2007 21:52

Mrs Badger -roisin said this

'used to think my dislike of 'unique' names, and unusual spellings was irrational and pure prejudice.

'But it really does seem to reveal a great deal about you and your parenting. IME at school the most charming and pleasant children are called traditional names like John, and Sarah, Rachel, and Eva; and the top sets are also full of Michaels, Louises, and Heathers.

The nightmare sets, and some of the most challenging children, have the least traditional names, and the quirkiest spellings. (Sorry, can't give examples in case of identification).

Did you know that given a list of 200 names of unknown students, experienced teachers can identify the top set and bottom set with astonishing accuracy!'

I think she does hint at the level of intelligence..

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 21:52

pmsl @ Twiglett, glad I gave you a laugh tonight.. thanks god I didn't spell my Connor, Coner!!!

Twiglett · 07/07/2007 21:53

I always used to pronounce roisin in my head when I read her posts like roi-sin (as in raisin).. oh the shame , and me married to an Irish bloke

popsycal · 07/07/2007 21:55

totally agree with roisin - totally right!
