Am I going to have an early scan too early?!

Hi ladies.

I am on a lot of these threads so some of your ladies might have already read my concerns.
I will be 6 weeks and 2 days based on my LMP on Thursday which is when my early scan is. I miscarried in August which is why I'm having an early scan. Am I actually going to be a lot less than this as I have no idea when ovulation happened? Am I wasting my time this week?!

I'm guessing you are after a heartbeat?
DS1 didn't have one at 6+3. DS2 did at 6+0. Both born on due date.
It may be too early, you may see a heartbeat. If you could bear to wait til after the next weekend, you woukd increase your chances of a positive scan.

For me, DS1 with no current heartbeat was ok - for me location was key. But it was still a long 2 weeks til I got rescanned.

@HotInWinter thanks for responding! I don't really know if it's even the heartbeat. I'm ok with not seeing that. I'm concerned I'm just a lot further behind than I thought and will hardly see even a sac! X

If you go and you don’t see a heartbeat you’re going to worry yourself sick. In those early days even a day or two makes a big difference. I would wait a week if you can otherwise you may cause yourself unnecessary stress.

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 18:09

@MingoMingo thank you I might just postpone it xx

I recently had one at 6+1 and found a heartbeat straight away . It’s well worth it for the reassurance that it’s in the right place etc

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 18:11

@Caprisunorange was that based only on your last period or ovulation? Sorry I have no idea what these scans go on!

Ovulation, I thought I was 7 weeks based oN LMP but also knew I’d ovulated a week late (was using ovulations sticks)

In the scan, they date on the scan results based on the average size of the baby. My baby was an average 6 week 1 day old foetus.

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 18:19

@Caprisunorange I have no idea when I ovulated so I reckon I'm only actually 4 something weeks pregnant which guts me.... guess I'll have to postpone for a while 😭

I had one at 6+6 (dated from LMP), and thank god I saw a heartbeat. I was in a total state worrying about miscarrying again, and if there hadn't been one yet I'd have really tormented myself. If you're actually a bit behind 6+1 there might not be much to see at all, so if you can bear to wait a week, I agree with PPs that you should do so - you're going to worry anyway, but you could spare yourself a total emotional rollercoaster.

Then again, you might see a heartbeat and your mind might really be set at ease. You just don't know.

Sending you solidarity! I know it's such an uncertain stage. FWIW, my baby is now 24 weeks gestation and kicking like an absolute loon.

CurlyTwirlyTwos · 11/11/2018 18:26

I went at 6+1 and they found a heartbeat easily abdominally. I was in the same position as you as it was after miscarriage. It did help/reassure me (for about a day 🙈) counting down the 3 days until I can have another at 8 weeks!

Pregnancy after mmc is hard - whatever it takes to get through it!!

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 18:26

@ladycarlotta thank you and congratulations lovely! I so wanna go as they've said I can go back for free again in a week or so if I don't see a heartbeat and would probably be nice for me to just see if somethings actually there! I'm in disbelief at the moment which makes this worse x x

@CurlyTwirlyTwos thank you! I guess I'm concerned as I'm going off LMP not ovulation date.. as I don't know it 😂😂

I didn’t know when I OVed either - but I actually measured ahead by 2 days! However the sonographer sternly reminded me that at this early stage it could -/+5 days at this early stage, so to continue to use LMP until dating scan.

Good luck at your scan, I would be prepared that it might be too early!

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 18:44

@CurlyTwirlyTwos I think I'll just go and see what they date me at. At least then when I rebook I'll know exactly when to come back!! X

I went at 8 weeks & it was perfect. Saw heartbeat very clearly!

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:11

@Mikewazowskismrs does everyone go based on LMP or ovulation? This is what I'm getting at. I don't think I'm actually 6weeks and 2days on Thursday. That's since 2nd October. I think I'll be less because of ovulation x

OP posts:
Mikewazowskismrs · 11/11/2018 19:14

I went on LMP as that’s how I was told to date my pregnancy (first baby). I estimated 8 weeks and measured 7 & 6.

If your happy to pay and potentially go back mabye just go for it but don’t get disheartened if it’s too early to see anything as that doesn’t mean it’s bad news Flowers

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:16

@Mikewazowskismrs I think I'll just go. My lovely mother's paying for some as I've already paid deposit and we can go back for free. They'll know when's best to go back so I might aswell xx

OP posts:
Caprisunorange · 11/11/2018 19:19

Do go. Imagine if all is fine and they get a heartbeat! And you seem very practical of that doesn’t happen. It’s well worth it IMO

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:22

@Caprisunorange I'll just go. Whatever is there is there and if I'm way early they won't be able to see anything. I'd like to think I'm not as early as 4 weeks though based on ovulation!

OP posts:
Mikewazowskismrs · 11/11/2018 19:28

Yeah, at least you’ll know where you stand with dates etc!

Good luck x

ChaosMoon · 11/11/2018 19:32

Hey @Delilah7! Sounds like you've decided, which is great. It's lovely that they'll give you a later scan if it is too early. Just remember that if you don't see anything yet, it's not a bad sign. And we're all here for you until the next scan. Good luck though, I really hope you see something! Xx

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:34

@ChaosMoon thanks Hun me too. Get my HCG results back tomorrow. Just crapping myself xx

mussie · 11/11/2018 19:37

Do you mean you think you might have ovulated two weeks late? Or are you confused about how pregnancies are dated?

When people say their baby measured '6 weeks', they mean the embryo was the expected size for what an embryo looks like 6 weeks after LMP, which is of course usually only 4 weeks since actual ovulation and conception. So 4 weeks from conception, you can potentially expect to see a heartbeat.

Always date by LMP, unless you know your ovulation date, then you could date from there and add two weeks. It's easier once you've had your dating scan, then you don't have to think about it again!

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:41

@mussie I'm just panicking how it all works and whether I'll actually be scanned as 6 weeks and 2 days. So confused 😂😂😂 it's all so new to me I'm sorry x
