Am I going to have an early scan too early?!

Hi ladies.

I am on a lot of these threads so some of your ladies might have already read my concerns.
I will be 6 weeks and 2 days based on my LMP on Thursday which is when my early scan is. I miscarried in August which is why I'm having an early scan. Am I actually going to be a lot less than this as I have no idea when ovulation happened? Am I wasting my time this week?!

I had one at 7 weeks according to lmp so was hoping to see a heartbeat etc.
There was just a sac and nothing else and the sonographer put me at 5 ish weeks and asked me to come back 2 weeks later (no extra charge) to see progress.
I was gutted and convinced that I had had a mmc. Longest 2 weeks ever until the rescan.
Rescan saw heartbeat and she put me at 7+2. Such a relief but I wish I hadn’t had the first one so early as the wait between was so stressful.

@Gillian1980 that's what I'm abit afraid of. Its more I just want to see there's something there, not just a heartbeat! Xx

@Delilah7 Hey hun, hope you're doing well. I've got an early scan booked on Wednesday and I'll be bang on 6 weeks according to LMP. The midwife I saw at the antenatal unit booked me in on that date so I would like to think with her expertise she thinks its a reasonable time to scan? Like you, I have no clue when I O'd and am going into this knowing we may not see the heartbeat if it's too early but I'm okay with that. I hope everything goes well for you, let me know how you get on xx

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 19:55

@Charm23 hey darling!!! hope you're well. Ok that's encouraging. Message me privately like you have before if you wanna talk some more about it after our scans! Xx

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 20:04

Hi OP, I was scanned at 5 + 6 (IVF pregnancy so date is exact) and twin heartbeats found straightaway 😊

Good luck! Xxx

Delilah7 · 11/11/2018 20:32

@CritterTamer thank you! I'm concerned I just don't actually know my dates hahaha. I'm currently 5 weeks and 5 days so will be 6 weeks and 2 when I scan going by LMP. X

We had an early scan as I'd been bleeding, no heartbeat at 6+5 and they told us to come back at 7+5. We had a week of thinking we'd lost our baby and then at the 7+5 saw the heartbeat straight away and touchwood everything has been ok since.

I can totally see why you'd want to go this week but I think after all you've been through the panic would be really horrid, I'd recommend going a week later but your call xxxx

Sparkles1992 · 11/11/2018 22:50

I was 6+5 and it was perfect, the actual shape of a baby and saw the heartbeat straight away Smile

Hi Delilah,
Hope it’s ok to share, but I’m will Gillian on this one...for context, I went for an early scan on sat not being sure of my dates but with LMP placing me at 7.5 weeks (which I knew wasn’t right), thought I was possibly 6.2ish (and wanted reassurance) but scanned as smaller again. Healthy presentation but not reassuring as too small for heartbeat etc. now I’m on a dreaded two week viability wait, still feeling every bit as pregnant as I did on sat am. If you can, hold off if unsure of your dates - even for an extra week. If you’re too early, even if you know logically it means it could all still be ok...not seeing what you hoped for is hard! Sorry, know this ain’t what your hoping to hear, but I wish I’d waited an extra week (ie until I thought I was seven+) as I’d know for sure. Best of luck ☘️ either way 🤞🙏 early pregnancy unknowing sucks xx

Thanks ladies. I'm abit of a dilemma about what to do and what not to! Xx

It's a tough call @Delilah7. I had an early scan at 7 weeks. All we could see was a splodge with a flicker of a heart beat.

The point of doing this is to give you reassurance. So the question is, which would feel worse:
Waiting an extra week for the scan?
Or scanning earlier, seeing nothing, and having to wait a week for a second scan?

Delilah7 · 12/11/2018 10:32

@ChaosMoon it's more for I just want to see there's something not necessarily a heartbeat and at least if I go I will then know where I am and when to go back.

@Delilah7 Honestly just go for it, the same thing happened to me - thought I was bang on 6 weeks, turns out I was only 5+2. Saw gestational sack and yolk sac, went back a week later for free and saw heartbeat.

Attached my two pics - one on the left is 5+2 where you can see the circle yolk sac, other one is 6+2.

Am I going to have an early scan too early?!
Am I going to have an early scan too early?!
ladycarlotta · 12/11/2018 10:54

ooh well if you get to go twice anyway, I would go. Just as long as you're prepared not to see too much this time round, and can handle that.

And yes, definitely count from your last period, not when you think you ovulated. That's how the hospital will be dating it, and it's how they'll calculate your due date, along with your 12 week scan.

GOOD LUCK!

Delilah7 · 12/11/2018 12:15

@ladycarlotta @fee1234 thanks ladies. Lovely to see how the scan looked Hun! Xx

OP posts:
Cleojinx · 12/11/2018 14:15

Just a bit of clarification re dating. Pregnancies are always dated from the first day of your LMP despite the fact that women ovulate generally 2 weeks after that day. That's just the way they're dated. So essentially, you're 2 weeks (ish) pregnant before your ovulation and conception.

I know it's confusing haha but that is how it works. Always date from LMP not ovulation/when you DTD.

Cleojinx · 12/11/2018 14:16

And obviously your gestation and due date can be amended at your scans up to the 12 week scan! Good luck Smile

Delilah7 · 12/11/2018 14:48

@Cleojinx thanks lovely it's so confusing for me as a first timer 😂😂

ChaosMoon · 12/11/2018 16:12

So you've made up your mind again? It sounds like going is the right thing for you. I'm excited for you now!

Delilah7 · 12/11/2018 16:38

@ChaosMoon I think it's best to just go. It's free for me to go back in it expecting to see a heartbeat or much. But it'll just be reassuring for someone to say yep you are pregnant! 😂

OP posts:
ChaosMoon · 12/11/2018 17:06

I know exactly what you mean. I still feel like that at 19 weeks! 😂

hewhinessoshewines · 12/11/2018 17:12

When is it

Flatwhite32 · 12/11/2018 17:46

@Delilah7 I had an early scan at 6+2 due to bleeding (I'd also had a MMC a few months beforehand, so my anxiety was through the roof!). They didn't see a heartbeat, so I had to go back at 8 weeks. My 16 week old DD is currently next to me! Good luck!
