Shorter mums and weight of baby at birth

Cosmogirl · 10/06/2007 22:43

Just curious as to whether the mother's and father's height affects the weight of a newborn. I'm 5.2 and DH is 6.2 - I was 6lbs5 at birth he was 8lbs..... Any short mums out there who can share their experiences? I'm banking on the logic that mother nature wouldn't allow women to grow a baby that was too big for them...

I am 5ft 2ins too. DH is 5ft 6ins.

My dc were

Ds1 6lbs 6oz

Ds2 6lbs 13oz

Dd1 9lbs 14oz

Dd2 8lbs 12oz

NikkiBFG · 10/06/2007 22:46

Wwe meet again Cosmogirl! You really are taking this seriously aren't you??

I can reassure you on that score! DH is 6ft 2" and I'm 5ft 2" just like you! I was a whopping 8 and half pounds and DH was around 7lb when he was born...

DS when he was born was 7lb 2.5oz so a nice weight...although I did put on 4stone with him and when I was told how heavy he was, wailed oh but that means I have to actually lose 3.5st....but I was just post birth and not responsible for my comments!!

lulumama · 10/06/2007 22:46

that logic is usually absolutely right

I am 5 ft 2, and i have had a DS of 7 lb 13 and a DD of 7 lb 8

women do on the whole, grow the size of baby they can birth...and even if a baby is on the big side, it is not a reason that birth will be impossible...

rantinghousewife · 10/06/2007 22:46

I'm sorry to disappoint but I'm 5.2 and (was) about the size of Kylie, ds was 9lb10oz and that was 13 years ago.

lulumama · 10/06/2007 22:47

oh, DH is 5 ft 10

wrinklytum · 10/06/2007 22:47

Am 5ft 3 and dp 5ft 8.

Dcs 8lb 5ozs and 9lb 3ozs

fireflyfairy2 · 10/06/2007 22:48

I am 4ft 10"

Dh is 5ft 11"

Dd was 6lb 1oz

Ds was 7lb 10oz

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 22:48

I am 5'2

Dd1 was 6lb 8oz at 38 weeks
Dd2 was 4lbs 14oz at 34 weeks
Ds was 5lbs 14oz at 37 weeks

rantinghousewife · 10/06/2007 22:49

There are other factors too, I have low blood pressure which apparently "creates an ideal environment". Uck at me with my "ideal environment"

ladyoflincoln · 10/06/2007 22:50

i am 5'2" and married to a 6 footer..

ds 7lb

dd 8lb 2oz

and both popped out like a cork from a gun

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 22:51

5ft3 I weighed about 7lb. DP 5ft8 weighed 3lb but was prem. DD 5lb exactly.

Cosmogirl · 10/06/2007 22:52

Hi again Nikki - yep, I thought I best put in some research - over-organised as ever! Bit alarmed by some of these weights though! Also the thought of being as short as I am with a pregnant belly is an intriguing one

thequeenofcontradiction · 10/06/2007 22:52

I'm 5'3" and DH is 5'8"

DS was 7lbs 13oz, so average really.

doddle · 10/06/2007 22:53

I'm 5' 2" as well, DP is 6' 2"

DS1 8lb 10oz
DS2 9lb 4oz

Not only were they heavy but unusually long as well!

PavlovtheCat · 10/06/2007 22:53

Cosmosgirl - dont forget that a heavier baby could be longer rather than wider. Friend had two babies both 10lb, one was delivered naturally, one by c-section as one long and the other stocky...

NikkiBFG · 10/06/2007 22:53

Well I had a huge bump and if water retaining was an Olympic sport, I would have got the Gold but it was fine!

My secret - a foot stool and a dishwasher! Minimum standing, maximum foot elevation!

jellycat · 10/06/2007 22:54

I am 5' and was 6lb at birth, dh is 5'9" and was 9lb at birth. ds1 was 7lb8oz, ds2 8lb5oz.

colditz · 10/06/2007 22:56

I am 5'2 ish and the ds's were 8lb 4 and 8lb 7 - and I had no problems getting them out at all.

peachygirl · 10/06/2007 22:56

I'm 4'11, DH is 5'7 and 1/2. DD was 5lb 9. I put on about a stone and a half.
I was concerned about how big she would be as I didn't want to go through hours of labour and then have an emergency c section.
I spoke to my GP who prodded me and discovered DD was breech at about 37 weeks so I had an elective C section!

Talk to your Midwife/ GP if you are worried about the size of the baby and your size I'm really glad I did

peachygirl · 10/06/2007 22:59

Just remembered whats your shoe size? it is thought that this can relate to the size of your pelvis. I don't think it is medically proved but just something they may ask about. I take a size 2 and this caused raised eyebrows with the midwife at my first appointment.

Cosmogirl · 10/06/2007 23:00

I've heard the shoe size saying too... I'm a 5/6 so fairly big considering my height.

NikkiBFG · 10/06/2007 23:02

Cosmo....please please don't worry too much about these things....just focus on TTC and having lots of fun doing it and make sure you do a live test on mnet as we lurrve that kind of thing!

colditz · 10/06/2007 23:03

I am 5/6 too. But my friend who is size six waist, and size 3 foot, and 5 foot 1, got a 10lb baby out with no problems, so it can be done.

Cosmogirl · 10/06/2007 23:07

I know - I'm not too worried. It's just something I've been curious about and I am one of those types of people that has to research something inside out upside down before I take the plunge and do it. Oh to be spontaneous - that would be nice.

Live test ?....

You start a thread....

Oooh I think I'm pg (pregnant)

Then there is a long discussion about dates of period etc

Then we nag you to do a test

You say ok I'm just off to do it now..

We all wait for you and eat popcorn...

Then you come back and announce result of said test

Its better than TV I tell you!
