Shorter mums and weight of baby at birth

Just curious as to whether the mother's and father's height affects the weight of a newborn. I'm 5.2 and DH is 6.2 - I was 6lbs5 at birth he was 8lbs..... Any short mums out there who can share their experiences? I'm banking on the logic that mother nature wouldn't allow women to grow a baby that was too big for them...

He he - that does sound fun! I'll make sure I do that but unless we have an unexpected suprise it could be a bit of a way off

I'll shut up now!

Best of luck with whatever you decide and any more questions you have, ask away - I won't tease anymore!

pmsl at slacker!

mygirllollipop · 11/06/2007 07:18

I'm 5ft 2in, DH normal height.
DD1 7lb 6oz
DD2 7lb 9.5oz
DD3 8lb 4.5oz
DD4 8lb 7.5oz
In defense of those weights, I was supposed to be 5ft 8in if if weren't for my hypothyroidism. However, I didn't need stitches any of them with short enough labours.

Nbg · 11/06/2007 07:24

I'm 5"3, and dh is 5"8

dd 7lb 3oz
ds 8lb 7oz, he was alot taller too.

I was told that the weight of your baby is usually inbetween the birth weights of yourself and your partner. Dont know if that is just for your first though.

lissie · 11/06/2007 07:25

im 5'1" a size 8 and ds was 9lb 2 by crash cs. but he had a v large head!

jinxed · 11/06/2007 07:30

I am 5'1
Dh is 6'4

DD1 6lb 6oz
DD2 7lb 3oz
DC3 - im guessin 8lb mark

Nbg · 11/06/2007 07:38

jinxed, 10 pounder at least surely?

lololol

nogoes · 11/06/2007 08:02

My sil is only 5.1 and both babies were over 9lb. My niece is 5.2 and had an 11lb baby . The majority of the babies in our family have been on the smaller side but I don't think height comes into it.

MamaMaiasaura · 11/06/2007 10:07

5'3" 8lb 12oz

barbamama · 11/06/2007 10:11

Hmmmmmm my limited experience sugegsts short mother + tall father = stuck baby I am afraid. I am 5ft dp is 6 ft 1 and ds1 was 8lb 3oz - which is not massive I don't think but he did get stuck - got him out in the end tho. I am hoping he will have stretched things enough for ds2 who is due soon and so far has been measuruing even bigger yikes! My parents were both shorties and all 4 kids were 7lb odd.

laksa · 11/06/2007 10:23

Just seen this thread, you have read my mind. I am 5ft 1, dh is 6 ft 2 and I am worried about having a big baby!

My mum is 5ft 1 also and she had 3 children all 7lbers. (dad is only 5ft7)

My mother inlaw is only 5ft 3 inch but her husband is 6ft 2 and she gave birth to my dh who came out at over 10lbs...needless to say I am scared!!

Not sure if it is a factor but if you give birth to a girl will she take after the mother more than the father in weight? I am clinging onto this in hope as we are expecting a girl and hopefully she will be a nice doable 7lber.

rhubarb90 · 11/06/2007 10:36

I'm 5ft 3, DP is 5ft 10. DS was 8lb 7.5oz, which I was told was quite big for a first baby. I'm kind of worried in case this one is even bigger - eeek.

Porpoise · 11/06/2007 10:40

Cosmogirl, there has actually been some research about this.
And, IIRC, the father's height is the biggest influence on the baby's length at birth, while the mother's weight is the biggest influence on the baby's weight at birth.
So, if you're, er, hefty and he's tall, you more likely to have a whopper.
(I can probably find that research if you're interested...)

meto · 11/06/2007 10:41

i'm 5'and a fag end, and DH is 6'3 DS was 7lb exactly. 53cm

my m/w told me it's nothing to do wiht the dad how big baby will be it's to do with the mums ability to have a good cord etc.

evenhope · 11/06/2007 10:58

I'm 5 foot 2, shoe size 5 and was 6lb at birth. DH is 5 foot 6. My father and his sisters were all over 10lb at birth but my babies were

DD1 6lb 10 oz
DS1 7lb 12 oz (42 wks)
DS2 7lb 10 oz
DS3 8lb 7 oz (41 wks)
DD2 7lb 1.5oz (39 wks)

(although I do have a friend who is 4ft 8 and her DH is well over 6ft, and her DSs were both born by CS because they were too big for her pelvis)

JodieG1 · 11/06/2007 11:01

I'm 5ft 3 I was 8lb 2 at birth. Dd was 5lb 14 and a half, ds1 7lb 12 and a half and ds2 was 8lb 2. Dh is 5ft 8.

JodieG1 · 11/06/2007 11:02

Also I'm a size 8 clothes and size 4/5 shoes. I didn't tear with any of them either and had no assistance.

lucykate · 11/06/2007 11:06

i am 5ft 2", average build, dh is 6ft 2" and is large build!

dd was 6lbs 7ozs

ds was 6lbs 9ozs

both were 5 days early. i had quick labours, minimal pain relief, and no stitches with either.

lucykate · 11/06/2007 11:07

oh and i'm a size 12 clothes, size 3/4 foot.

lizziemun · 11/06/2007 11:13
