Kyle
Ellie
Jaden/Jayden
Chanelle
etc etc... and apologies if you have called your child any of the above
I put Ellie because a squillion little girls are called that.
Freya is a nice name but there are so many now - it really turns me against such names,no matter whether they are nice

My friend has one of those problem surnames that sounds really rude if you say it too fast on its own or after certain first names specially those that end in a c. Took them ages to choose first name.

Blandmum · 06/06/2007 19:36

bettybobo · 06/06/2007 19:37

would love to know where abouts you are califrau its funny how a whole area can have a trend??
taylorsmummy glad you're still with us and smiling, found allgonebellyup more offensive than the op cos she brought class into it and sounded smug. Dont let it get to you. theres loads of pretentious middleclass names round here from people trying too hard
.

TaylorsMummy · 06/06/2007 19:42

thanks bettyboo, nice to know there are some normal, decent people here

as long as you like the name, who gives a crap what anyone else thinks?

Pruuni · 06/06/2007 19:47

If I turned the tables on the pretentious middleclass comment and said I thought that there were some real poor efforts from common-as-muck conformists - wouldn't sound very nice, would it?
I don't think there's any need for it to descend to that level, though, is there?

Blandmum · 06/06/2007 19:49

I draw your attention to Prof Byrne, everyone really calls him Dick, and I'm not kidding

bettybobo · 06/06/2007 19:49

ok fair point i was just trying to cheer Taylormummy up!
alright i didnt name them so not sure if i can think of some,. also didnt want to offend people. but seems i have done so anyway o crap
Geez im probably using one for my ds anway. honset to god just wanted to help someone out
[slinks away]

TaylorsMummy · 06/06/2007 19:51

it's a fair enough comment.people think they can slag off 'working class names' and all have a good laugh at how 'grim' they are but no one's allowed to say anything back. Why? i think some of the names the 'middle classes' (or trying to be middle class) call their kids are laughable, really, really stupud but i would generally keep it to myself unless someone starts slagging down my family's names like what's happened here.it's not nice and it's not clever.

allieBongo · 06/06/2007 19:52

lol at dick byrne....
me and dh were sitting in hospital waiting room recently and heard a gem. The word "faff" in our household when younger referred to a lady garden.
The american nurse called out the next patient:
"Harry Faff"
cue dh and i to snigger like children.

oxocube · 06/06/2007 19:54

Taylorsmummy, ignore it . I think my Eleanor - often called Ellie - has a nice name! I don't give a rat's arse if someone else thinks its nasty or common.

bettybobo · 06/06/2007 19:54

damn was trrying to keep it light hearted back there with teh potato stuff and have dropped myself in it now. i just dont make a habit of looking down on people and felt bad for taylorsmummy i shouldnt have said it (wrist suitably slapped)

Since most of the last chunk (since the potato thing)has been about peoples names that we like then they may be thinking they are being criticised when they are not.

Desiderata · 06/06/2007 20:03

Taylorsmummy - I don't think anyone, once on this thread, has alluded to working class/middle class except you.

And I am one working class woman if ever there was one.

Please, the thread is working out fine. My son has one of the most common Christian names known to man and I wouldn't take offence if someone ridiculed it.

I'm not saying the OP was wise to start it, but I think we've all managed it fairly well, and had a few laughs along the way. No one is laughing at children. We're all mums on here

Pruuni · 06/06/2007 20:05

No I don't think it's all right to be vile just because others have been, Taylorsmummy.

BTW, I like a good name thread (the ones where we have a little larf at Eggy Kock and Ophelia Balls) but for me the humour is in names plus surnames. And it's affectionate.
Just laying into names isn't affectionate. I mean, obviously some are silly or spelt naffly, but people really get hurt, clearly.
