Just out of interest, what cars do you all have? I’m tempted by a Ford Kuga after trying out a friend’s over the weekend. We currently have a Defender and a Suzuki crossover, but the Suzuki is too small and needs to go. Want a car big enough for two dogs in the boot, and spacious inside, but with enough height/ground clearance so I can drive in fields (which rules out most estate cars annoyingly!)

Buttercup53 · 03/10/2018 18:26

@gin I have a nearly 10 year old, 3 door punto grande with no air con which I do not recommend (obviously!). Was originally going to buy a new car this year but don’t see how I’m going to afford it now, it’s going to be an absolute nightmare with a car seat in summer. Surprisingly big boot though...

Butter I feel your pain! My car is 12 years old now and only just about scraped through the MOT last November, and the exhaust has fallen off and been welded back on by DH since then Confused so I can’t see it passing this year. We can’t really afford a new car right now but I can’t spend a fortune on this current thing either when I know it doesn’t suit us! The Defender has a lovely big boot but is missing all the mod cons like airbags Grin I’d also need a bloody ladder to get a baby into its car seat. I don’t envy the 3 door bit though. I had one of those tiny old 3 door fiestas in my first nanny job with two kids and the sweat I used to get into trying to get them plus a bulky buggy in probably kept me 2 stone lighter Grin

Pelly8 · 03/10/2018 19:16

Just went for a walk which usually takes me about 20 mins and it took me over an hour. I was short of breath and needed to stop every few meters. Please tell me this gets better after birth?!

I’ve not got a 25 week appointment booked with the midwife and I’m not sure why. I’m 27 weeks tomorrow. Do I need to insist on having one??

Hello to all the new comers!

cryptonaut · 03/10/2018 19:24

I have a Toyota Yaris atm, it's not big enough from the pram. It's currently on finance which is ending in about 9 months. No way I'm going to be able to afford the balloon payment on statutory maternity pay so considering trading it in for the Toyota Verso, saw it in the showroom at my last service and it's massive inside! DH recently replaced his falling apart VW Polo with a Mazda 3, it has enough room for the pram but not too much else in the boot.

jennac · 03/10/2018 19:30

Oh no @Curlypop I didn't know that. Ours is ten years old 😬

Curlypop · 03/10/2018 19:48

I know @jennac I bought mine in 2012 but it was made in early 2009 so annoyed but least I know I have a new safe one.

SuperVeggie · 03/10/2018 19:52

Hi everyone, I'd like to join the Facebook group too but can't find it! Any idea how to join?

Buttercup53 · 03/10/2018 20:10

@gin you’ll have to let me know what you end up with. Probably after I go back to work I’ll get a new car, ideally want 5 doors, space for a pram, baby and dog, and that precious air con for the summer months! I much prefer smaller cars as I typically stick to local roads, I’d like a clio or similar but I might need to look bigger.

@pelly I’m actually quite relieved someone else is taking so long to walk anywhere! Im normally a very fast walker and now I have to slow it right down and it’s so frustrating. I can’t even take the two flights of stairs at work without a break now. Can’t imagine what it’ll be like in even a couple more weeks.

Has anyone started a new exercise regime while pregnant? Before I got pregnant I was getting into running and enjoying it a lot, unfortunately hurt my leg and had to take a couple of weeks off and then bam, baby showed up. I’ve kept walking as much as I can, but I feel like I need something more/different - however I’m now a week or so away from the third trimester so I’m wondering if swimming is my only option?

Regarding car seats, if you buy an isofix base are you able to carry on using that when you get a car seat that is the next size up? Or does it need to be one of the 2 way ones if you want to do that? I'm confused and don't really want to buy an isofix base if it will only work for the baby period if you know what I mean!

sexnotgender · 03/10/2018 20:20

I’ve just bought a new car, our old one was a ten year old Peugeot 207 and was literally falling to bits.

Bought a Skoda fabia estate- the Monte Carlo version. Absolutely love it! Boot is more than big enough for my giant greyhound.

jennac · 03/10/2018 20:31

And what is the difference between isofix, easyfix and familyfix bases?! This is a mindfield! 🤯

Curlypop · 03/10/2018 20:47

@jennac depends on car seat. You can get a two way family fix base that the pebble and pearl car seat fit on.

jadem1990 · 03/10/2018 20:54

I'm trying to keep active by doing a low impact class in the gym and I attend pregnancy yoga every week. I would highly recommend the latter! I always sleep way better after it! I have a nissan juke and we have no plans on changing that as it seems big enough for everything. Fingers crossed! Anyone else still feel really small compared to most? I have a bump but its easily hidden in my work clothes x

Wowthisisreal · 03/10/2018 21:06

@cryptonaut I have a Yaris too! I just assumed it would be big enough for the pram...! What pram did you go for?!

Wowthisisreal · 03/10/2018 21:08

@Curlypop we also went for the two way isofix, pebble plus and 2way pearl - we got it in a deal for the bundle for £499 and in theory should see us all the way to 4 years old! 🤞🏻

doleritedinosaur · 03/10/2018 21:13

@jennac I thought isofix was fitted to all cars since 2007, not sure what the others are.
It’s a metal bar running along the backseat that seats fix to.

I never used the isofix base as the silver cross came with a car seat that belts in quite well.
The one my 18 month is in has a base fitted to the car seat which he can be in until he’s 4 or his head comes over the top. This uses the isofix.
There is a car seat safety Facebook group which is really good & helpful. We have a local, baby shop near us who are fantastic at going through car seats & travel systems, so I would highly recommend finding one. They also fitted the car seat which helped majorly.
& I found out the other day Britax are German where most if not all car seat safety rules & regulations start from so they are good car seats to have a starting point from.

We have to get a new car before January, ideally before insurance is up in November Confused

Looking at staying with Vauxhall as only needed one new part in 5 years & our corsa has fitted 2 car seats, Quinny Buzz & when we go on holiday what seems like the whole house.
Looking at a 7 seater but might have to go for 5.

I booked my 25 week midwife appointment for 2 weeks time but I’m actually away so need to get hold of midwife & see what she wants to do.

I would like to join the Facebook group but I couldn’t see it so guess I have to be added.

Exercise wise I am more active than before I was pregnant. I do half hour of yoga a day & try to get to do outdoor gym 3 times a week. My cardio workout is running around after two toddlers.
My squats are getting better & better so I’m noticing a difference.

I’m getting some really big kicks that are getting a bit oooomph so no idea what they’ll be like in ten weeks time.

Sorry if this is long & I missed any questions, I’ve been in bed a hour as absolutely shattered.

Winterbaby19 · 03/10/2018 21:23

Hii. My car broke down last Friday, AA put me down as a priority call out when I told the guy on the phone and the garage have done us a good deal / alternator at trade price - must be the bump and feeling pleased!! Yet to look at car seats but soaking up your advice. Also doing a weekly pregnancy yoga class and loving it. Doing very little else! Swimming's meant to be great, need to build into routine X x

cryptonaut · 03/10/2018 22:02

@Wowthisisreal we were given a Mothercare one from someone I know, not sure of the exact model, I think it would be fine if the wheels weren't so big. DH boot is bigger than mine and it only just fit in his.

@Buttercup53 I was really active before falling pregnant so I've actually toned it down slightly. I've heard pregnancy yoga is fine for those who haven't done it before, and I think you can start some exercise if you ease into it (low impact for a short amount of time, and increase impact/time safely based on how you feel) but avoid ab/core exercises. I've also started the "FitMama Method" which gives exercises that are safe for pregnancy and will benefit both you and baby https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0285640860/ref=cmswwrcppapi_j2sTBb67E233H

Pelly8 · 03/10/2018 23:15

@buttercup53 I used to go to the gym 3-4 times a week doing HIIT and lifting weights (not that it made a blind bit of difference) but now all I do is swim once or twice a week and walk if I can. I’m going to the gym tomorrow to swim and then will try and use some of the weights machines (very low weights) from next week onwards as I want to rebuild my upper body strength. I’m also going to start going to pregnancy yoga properly from this weekend.

I haven’t done a squat in ages and am worried the baby will fall out if I do one 😂

regarding in laws naming the baby - that’s just odd. We’ve joked with both sets about old fashioned baby names and the rents have taken to calling the baby “prince” or “the baby” or “our grandson” but it’s all done in jest. Neither set have actually picked and called the baby a name! I would be really annoyed if either set did that.

Merrz · 04/10/2018 08:08

I need a new car too, got an 11 year old Golf, which i actually love and havs been no hastle but i'm worried it'll start being unreliable soon and feel like i could do with something a litlle bigger, have also been looking at Ford Kugas Gin or skoda estates Confused

@jadem1990 I still feel quite small depending what i wear, with leggings and a strappy top my bump looks big but like you say i can still easily hide it if i want to.

Exercise wise i feel really lazy compared to everyone else, all i do is walk the dog. 2 decent half hour walks a day so guess its better than nothing??

Buttercup53 · 04/10/2018 08:27

Thanks to everyone for letting me know about your exercise regimes - @merz that’s pretty much what I do now. I had planned on getting in good shape before getting pregnant but it happened pretty much instantly so I’ve always been worried about putting my body through too much. I have a good BMI, and on a basic level I’m not in bad shape (before I was pregnant I could run upstairs etc, so not extremely unfit IYSWIM), I’m just nowhere near as fit as I’d like to be. I’m going to have a look at the link you posted @cryptonaut as that looks good, and I’m going to have to go swimming as I think that will help my pelvic and back pain. I’ve looked for maternity classes in my area and there aren’t any in any of the surrounding towns so I feel like I’m stuck with (slow) walking and (probably slow) swimming. I could travel to Leeds but that’s adding over an hour travel time on top of the class. I’ll also talk to my midwife at my next appointment I think.

I've been doing no exercise apart from the odd walk. Was going to start pregnancy pilates or swjmming then found out i have placenta previa at the moment do daren't risk it.

With regards to car seats i have only heard of isofix. As someone else sats this actually attaches to the car and you just clip your car seat onto it. Saves having to use the car seat belt. I think you will need to research the isofix base and car seats that are compatible with it. I know thr pram we have got you you can get an isofix base but apparently it is only suitable with the car seat which comes with the pram so when we size up we would need a new isofix base.

Has anyone bout their dp a book about newborns ot could recommend one more tailored to men? Dp cant make our antenatal classes as he works. Im not so bothered about birth and labour as we've done that bit before but we have never had a newborn and i want him to be educated on things like bottles, bathing, wrapping baby etc so he can make decisions too rather than leaving it all to me.

Rarfy · 04/10/2018 09:35

Sorry about all the typos - rushing on my phone at work.

jennac · 04/10/2018 09:48

@cryptonaut the Fit Mama book looks good...is it exercises that you can follow at home?

Thanks everyone for your help regarding isofix, etc. We have a car seat that just fits with the seat belt so I'm wondering whether to just keep that for now 🤷‍♀️
