Just wondering what the average number of scans normally is, and how this varies between high and low risk pregnancies.

For a low risk pregnancy it's normally just two - 12 weeks and 20. I had seven NHS scans but that's because I had two early scans due to previous miscarriages and then serial growth scans when they suspected the baby was too small (he was just fine). I had a few people tell me I was 'lucky to get to see the baby so much' - I'd have felt luckier to have had a low risk pregnancy!

Takfujimoto · 16/08/2018 23:09

For a standard low risk pregnancy and no other health complications it's two.

Dating scan roughly around 12 weeks

Anomaly scan around 20 weeks

With high risk pregnancies there is such a varied amount of reasons for extra scans but in the NHS I would say if they offer a scan then it's certainly for a good reason.

All of my pregnancies were slightly high risk and the third was extremely dangerous and I was closely monitored from the beginning.

On average with my first two pregnancies I had 4/5 scans per baby and 14 with my last.

Nichola2310 · 16/08/2018 23:10

I’ve lost count of how many scans I’ve had because of issues with both me and the baby, maybe around 12. As previous poster said I got sick of people acting like it was a treat, as when you’re hearing bad news as a result it couldn’t feel further from a treat.

dingdongdigeridoo · 16/08/2018 23:13

I’ve had about 8. Combination of high BMI, which meant extra growth scans, plus a small abnormality which was picked up so meant I had to be referred to a specialist.

It’s nice to have the extra scans to a certain extent, but it does get annoying to be in and out the hospital all the time! I once had a scan that took nearly an hour. I almost fell asleep because it was all dark and quiet in the room.

booandbumpp · 16/08/2018 23:14

I'm 29 weeks and I've had 11 scans so far but baby has issues. I've got another in 2 weeks to be done every 2 weeks with feto maternal consultant to check growth and another every 4 weeks with a cardiologist for baby's congenital heart defect. So I will probably have around 20+ scans before the pregnancy is over. I wasn't high risk at the start of pregnancy but I am now and I wouldn't say that my experience is typical.
But most have 2!

MrsBlondie · 16/08/2018 23:15

I had 2 scans with my pregnancies

booandbumpp · 16/08/2018 23:16

Oh and as for "lucky to see him" I had to close my eyes and couldn't look at the screen for an entire scan yesterday because I was so terrified of what they would see. I would give anything to have an average pregnancy and only have 2 scans.

Sandstormbrewing · 16/08/2018 23:40

I had 4 NHS scans with DC1 - the first was because they thought it was ectopic, I was in so much pain I just didn't care. Then my 12 & 20 week ones then one at 34 weeks due to low lying placenta.

This pregnancy I've only had my 12 weeks one so far.

I was high risk in both pregnancies, but due to my pre-existing health condition do don't need either extra scans.

Generally extra scans are only for if baby has potential issues, so fewer scans is better!

Tortycat · 16/08/2018 23:49

i had extra scans in my first pregnancy as i was high risk. I asked about any risks of having lots and was told it raised odds of the baby being left handed. ds1 is right handed so didnt happen that way for us, but I've always wondered if this is true and what would make it happen

SemperIdem · 16/08/2018 23:52

I had 3, I had to have a growth scan very late on (all was fine). I was told at that scan I would have had the baby in a weeks time. They were right! Have a really lovely profile shot of my daughter from that scan which is recognisably her, even 3 years on.

I believe it is 2 scans, generally speaking.

happymummy12345 · 16/08/2018 23:53

With no complications it's 2. My first scan was late, I had my 1st 24th March and my 2nd 16th April.
I had a growth scan around 37 weeks as baby measured small. That was it for me

FlippertyJibbet88 · 16/08/2018 23:53

I had 24 in my first due to anomalies with baby, but I think that's a very unusually high number. So far in my second I've had 5 - two due to bleeding episodes at 9 and 14 weeks, the two standard ones and I've just had a growth scan at 26 weeks, for no medical reason this pregnancy but because of the issues in the last one I'm under a consultant.

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 16/08/2018 23:53

23 weeks and had 7 so far...

SarahBeeney · 16/08/2018 23:53

I had 8 as my bump was massive.

annlee3817 · 16/08/2018 23:56

I was high risk from 21 weeks, up until that I'd had four scans including two private. After that I had weekly internal scans up until 27 weeks. Then fortnightly internal and abdominal until approx 35 weeks, followed by a scan at term due to reduced movements. So 16 approx in total

BertieBotts · 16/08/2018 23:56

In the UK- 4. I had two dating scans because the first was found to be too early, the normal 20 week anatomy scan, and then an extra scan at 34 weeks because of placenta praevia.

In Germany- I've literally lost count Grin over 20 probably.

user1471546851 · 16/08/2018 23:58

I had 10 with my first 8 with my second due to a blood condition I have that can affect growth and development of baby. I also have an enlarged fallopian tube so they did an early scans on both to check baby's where in the correct place. Most of the scans where just in my Consultants room/office what ever you call it and he would rarely show me the screen and I would never ask I'd just lay there closing my eyes holding my breath hoping everything was still okay (and it was thank god)

owlofathena · 17/08/2018 00:00

I had 4 scans before my 12 week scan due to previous miscarriages, then my 12 week, 2 more scans and then 20 week scan. All nhs scans. After 20 week scan I was no longer high risk however at 38 weeks I was booked in for a scan due to continual lack of movement but I gave birth before the scan.

Stephisaur · 17/08/2018 07:54

2 scans is standard. A dating scan at 12 weeks and an anomaly scan at 20 weeks.

I’ve also had a check up scan at 16 weeks due to an unusual blood result, and one at 22 weeks because baby wasn’t cooperating at 20 week scan. I’m booked in for 2 more scans at 24 weeks and 28 weeks for monitoring, again to do with that unusual blood result.

I also had a scan at 18 weeks privately to determine the baby’s sex.

So that’ll be 6 NHS and a private scan before I’m done 😂

I am “moderate risk”

ReginaPhalange89 · 17/08/2018 07:54

I had the usual 2 at 12 & 20 weeks

Then had a growth scan very near the eNd with both as bump was measuring big first pregnancy then small second pregnancy

cocoallure · 17/08/2018 07:58

Just one. That's all they did in York hospital.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 17/08/2018 08:01

I'm considered high risk but actually things are going very well.

I should have 12/20/24/28/32/36 week scans, in reality I've had 3 attempts at the 20 week scan (uncooperative baby) and after the 3rd (they usually only do 2 tries) attempt they've given up. I also had a private scan at 8 weeks.

PotteringAlong · 17/08/2018 08:04

For all 3 of my pregnancies I had the 2 standard 12 and 20 week scans.

Fireba11 · 17/08/2018 08:17

I paid for an early dating scan, then had 12 week scan with NHS. I had to go in to EPU as emergency as I was in so much pain I couldn't walk and the Dr did a quick reassurance scan but didn't see much. She referred me to have an ovarian scan to rule any cysts/growths out so had another scan a week or so later. It turns out it was a trapped ligament but was horrendously painful. Then had my 20 week scan, then we paid to have a 4D scan but he wasn't cooperating (hands over his face then cord over his face!) so we have a free recan next week. So I'm 28 weeks pregnant and have had 5 so far and 1 more to go, but had to pay privately for some.

SoyDora · 17/08/2018 08:20

I’m on my third low risk pregnancy but have always had at least 4 as I have awkward babies who don’t lie in the right place for measurements! So I’ve had 2 dating scans and 2 anomaly scans in all three pregnancies. I also had an early NHS scan for bleeding in my first pregnancy (all fine), a private early reassurance scan with my second and a private sexing scan this time. So 5 in all.
