How many scans did you have?

Just wondering what the average number of scans normally is, and how this varies between high and low risk pregnancies.

I had 1 private early scan with first then normal scans & 3 extra scans plus a 4D scan where I was practised on by students while in hospital due to sepsis & liver issues.

Second was early scan due to bleeding & two extra scans for growth & placenta positioning. Plus extra for cervical length so 6.

This one has been early scan due to bleeding, dating scan & cervical length check so 3 so far.

usernotfound0000 · 17/08/2018 08:59

In my first pregnancy I had:

Private early scan around 8 weeks
NHS dating scan at 10 weeks (told them I was too early but they went on LMP rather than the private scan!)
NHS dating scan at 13 weeks
NHS anomaly scan at 20 weeks
Growth scan at 36 weeks

So far in this one I've had:
Private scan at 8 weeks
Dating scan at 12 weeks
Anomaly scan at 20 weeks

I'm not expecting to have any more unless I need a growth scan later on like last time.

Liz3891 · 17/08/2018 09:14

Unless something changes, I'll be having 3 scans: 12 weeks, 20 weeks, and my trust does a standard growth scan at 36 weeks.

Liz3891 · 17/08/2018 09:15

Oh wait actually that was a lie. I had a scan with the Harmony test at 10 weeks. I sort of forget about it because I didn't actually go caring about the scan. Just wanted the blood test done.

OutPinked · 17/08/2018 09:27

NHS average for a low risk pregnancy is two. Your dating scan between 10 and 14 weeks and your anomaly scan between 18 and 21 weeks.

I had those two but also a private one at 16 weeks. I needed a second anomaly scan because he wouldn’t move so they couldn’t obtain all of the measurements they needed. I have to go for a growth scan today too because my bump is measuring 4 weeks ahead.

GuyGarveysWife · 17/08/2018 10:05

I have 6 with my first and either 7 or 8 with my second.

DappledThings · 17/08/2018 10:17

9 with DC2 for various reasons. I was at King's College London and a couple of those were as part of research projects.

King's do a third scan at 36 weeks for everyone. It's to measure blood flow and identify any risk factors. They believe if that third scan was standard nationally we would cut the stillbirth rate by a third.

purpleorchidwhite · 17/08/2018 11:34

I had 12 scans for a high risk pregnancy.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 17/08/2018 11:41

With my first I had three, early dating due to PCOS I hadn't had a period in over a year so had no dates to go on then the normal two at 12 and 20 weeks.

DC2 I had the normal two.

With DC3 I had three normal two and a growth scan st 36 A's was measuring the same as I had at my 32 week appointment. Baby was fine but the horrible wait for the scan to confirm that wasn't worth then getting too see him again.

Heismyopendoor · 17/08/2018 11:41

With Dd (she’s 10) they only offered the dating scan in my area, but I had some bleeding before that so was scanned them too. On my due date they thought she was breach so was sent for another scan. We also paid for a private 4d scan when I was about five months.

With DS1 I had a very bad bleed so had two scans before the dating one. Then they had the 20 week scan at that point. I then had another three to check for growth and my placenta.

With DS2, no bleed (yay!) I had the dating scan, 20 week scan and then two more scans to check my placenta wasn’t sticking to my scars and growth.

Generally it seems that a dating scan and a 20 week (anomaly scan?) is the norm for straight forward low risk pregnancies.

Paranormalbouquet · 17/08/2018 11:47

I’m a high risk pregnancy. 22 weeks now.

So far have had NHS scans at:
7 weeks (bleeding)
8 weeks (planning for surgery)
11 weeks (following a surgery)
12 weeks
16 weeks
20 weeks

Further scans booked for 23, 28, 32 and 36 weeks at the moment but there may be more.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 17/08/2018 11:49

In my two pregnancies I've literally never had anyone tell me what "risk" I am! Only heard the term high risk here.

Anyway, first pregnancy I had 12 and 20 week scan. Second time I had loads! 12 and 20. Plus 3 or 4 growth scans because I developed pre eclampsia at 34 weeks with DD1. And I had another scan around 30 weeks when I fell and landed on my stomach.

Stroller15 · 17/08/2018 11:50

Usually 2 here in Scotland too, I had 3 with my dc1 (low risk) - had a positioning scan at 39 weeks as the mw was unsure where baby was. Dc2 I've had about 5 as I had chicken pox in my first trimester.

StarfishSandwich · 17/08/2018 11:59

I’ve had 7. Went to EPU not knowing how pregnant I was (crazy irregular periods) and the first scan was fairly inconclusive (turns out it was just very early) so had a second scan a couple of weeks later just to check it was progressing. I then had the usual 12 week scan. At 14 weeks I had a small anxiety attack whilst looking after a lady who had had a missed miscarriage so one of the doctors did a very quick reassurance scan for me as a favour. I then had the regular 20 week scan. At 28 weeks I had a growth scan due to having gotten pregnant in a Zika risk area. At 32 weeks I had a growth scan that I really didn’t feel was needed tbh (was measured by someone different to normal) but didn’t want to be seen as awkward by declining! I’m desperately avoiding having any more as I’d rather not go looking for issues right at the end of my pregnancy.

1sttimeDD · 17/08/2018 12:08

I was consultant led due to previous LEEP procedure on my cervix. I had 4 - dating, anomaly, additional cervical scan (which was transabdominal and transvaginal) and a growth scan just before I was induced.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 17/08/2018 12:31

None. No such thing in my day.

wimbler · 17/08/2018 12:40

I'm also at Kings so will have 3 routine scans. 12w, 20w and 36w. Had my 20w scan today and everything was healthy :)

SoyDora · 17/08/2018 12:49

Girlwiththearabstrap I think you’d only be told what ‘risk’ you are if your pregnancy is considered high risk at booking, which it doesn’t seem yours were. These are usually consultant led pregnancies.
I was told I had no risk factors at my booking in appointments. From that I deduced I was probably ‘low risk’ Smile.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 17/08/2018 14:54

I had pre eclampsia in both pregnancies, a premature birth and blood transfusions first time so I did have extra scans. I just find the term "high risk" odd as I've never heard anyone describe their pregnancy like that in real life! Just on here.

SoyDora · 17/08/2018 14:56

There’s a difference between issues being identified later in pregnancy and being identified as a ‘high risk’ pregnancy from your booking appointment though.
Not sure if I’ve ever heard anyone use those particular words in real life, never really thought about it to be honest. Seems a reasonable way to describe a pregnancy that has been identified as potentially being problematic though.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 17/08/2018 15:08

Ah this was with my first so they knew I'd had all those issues when I was booked in for DD2 so I guess we did discuss risk. It's not a big deal, I just always think it looks quite dramatic to read people describing themselves like that!

itallhappensforareason · 17/08/2018 15:29

I had 2 additional scans as part of the protocol for high BMI. Had one at 33 weeks and then one at 36.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 17/08/2018 15:57

With my first pregnancy just had the 12 and 20 week scans as standard, no issue identified at either scan but when she was born she was unexpectedly small (2nd centile) so I've had to have extra scans throughout my second pregnancy. I've lost count of how many scans I've had now. Have been scanned roughly every 3 weeks. I don't mind having to go in for scans, but it's frustrating that after each scan I have to sit and wait for an average of 2 hours to see a consultant. Never seen the same one twice and they all contradict each other.

Mississippilessly · 17/08/2018 16:12

I am low risk but my bump measured too big so I had 5 in the end

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 17/08/2018 16:45

5 with my last pregnancy, 12 & 20 weeks and then 28, 32 and 36 weeks because I was over 40.
