I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks lucindae I didn't know that about the skin. Blimey, I think I was in a magic illusion about what a wonderful time it would be! 😂
Welcome Delly and bailey, really hope things get better for you both soon.... Def go back to your doctor's!
I went to doctor again today in desperation and she has given me some suppositories of ondansetron., Says they are amazing but you can only have five and one a day. A bit nervous about the method but at this stage will try anything. Anyone else used them before?

Also after I'm sick I eat an orange calippo and it works a treat... Don't know why, don't care but seems to be the only thing that I actually want and keep down if that helps anyone!!

Sunandsea1 · 23/08/2018 11:13

Has anyone taken Zantac? My vomit is so acidy and quite frankly everything is burning by now. I bought some as someone mentioned ranitidine can help but just want to double check.

Lucybex · 23/08/2018 12:00

Don't know about zantac but ranitidine works well x

Foodylicious · 23/08/2018 12:38

Zantac is the Brand name for Ranitidine.
So both fine
Zantac is usually 2-3 times the price, so look for the cheaper one of you can. Most supermarkets sell it.

It's fine to take twice a day Smile

Sunandsea1 · 23/08/2018 12:47

Thank you!!!

Bailey8 · 23/08/2018 17:00

Those on the Ondansetron, does it do anything for the nausea? I’m at the point where I can’t get out of bed each day as the nausea is at the point of me feeling on the verge of being sick constantly. I can only keep soup down if I don’t move all day. Just wondering if there’s going to be any kind of improvement with this at all? Really struggling to go on like this much longer, weight loss is now at 10lbs in 2weeks and much more I’ll be deemed as underweighted. Sorry that turned into a moan, I’m just miserable with this now

Lucybex · 23/08/2018 17:50

Oh bailey8 I'm so sorry and do sympathise... I was the same couldn't move then they took me into hospital and rehydrated me and put me on prochlorperazine, ondansetron and cyclizine. I worry it was a lot for the baby but I can at least now move without being sick! No means a cure... Still being sick 5 or so times a day and feel awful especially first thing in morning and last thing at night but I've been able to work from home, have a conversation which isn't about sick (!) And even eat some bland food. Most importantly I'm drinking fluids...So I recommend it and I think you definitely go for it. To be honest when you're like that there's not much to lose and it is safe for the baby!
(I have been given ondansetron suppositories which while gross also work better than tablets)
Sending empathy hugs! xx

Bailey8 · 23/08/2018 18:06

Thank you, I’m willing to try anything now. I have the midwife coming in the morning to do my booking in so hoping she will tell me if I need to go to the hospital or not. Hadn’t realised the meds could be taken together, sounds like I still have a few options to explore. I tried to work from home on Tuesday but didn’t manage the day but if I could get to a point of being able to do that again then I think I’ll be happy. Hope you continue to improve xx

LucindaE · 23/08/2018 20:24

Bailey and LucyBex Some women on here have been on Ondansetron, Cyclzine and Metroclopramide, plus anti acid and a laxative. They didn't like having to take so many meds, but it was that or be going in for fluids every few days, and the babies were fine. Do make sure you have an effective laxative. I on'y learnt recently from DeadDoorPost* that in fact, you can get Lactulose over the counter.
Bailey Don't despair, things get better for most people between weeks 14 and 20, and even for the unlucky minority who suffer throghout, it is never so bad as in the first tri. One of the women on this thread who was amongst the most ill was able to go back to work in the second tri. I am glad you get endure the soup.
SeaandSand I think Omprazole is another good anti acid. It does seem to make a massive difference.
I hope everyone is coping. Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Would you believe that I have to go to another family funeral tomorrow (not a close relative). I expected to us to be back the same day, but now I think must stay overnight. I have asked a really lovely ex-sufferer who was onceon this thread to call in. I hope everyone is coping.

I'm so sorry to hear that Lucinda... Is it really far away? Awful to go through bereavement now too... Sending love xxx

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2018 06:51

Waves to all. I’m popping in while @lucindaE has to attend her funeral :(

Fellow sufferer here - and rhe bubs who made me so sick is now 17mths

Just wanted do say I know it’s rough. You feel crap. Throw up everywhere and the nausea but it’s worth it when your baby is in your arms and the sickness and weird metal taste went instantly for me

How is everyone’s today

Lucybex · 24/08/2018 10:54

Hi there thanks so much for checking in with us while Lucinda is away and great to know it's worth it... I have no doubt it is but still feels so far away!

Can you or anyone else advise on ketosticks? Do they tell you how many ketones you have? Which brand is best?
Hospital told me to come back if ever they went above three and despite all the meds in the world I'm starting to feel dehydrated again... Thinking I should check. Any advice gratefully received!!

Bailey8 · 24/08/2018 11:22

I use ketostix which the local pharmacy had, it has + on the side to measure against which says how many ketones If present. Definitely worth checking if you feel dehydrated. Midwife checked mine today and was amazed I have none still despite not really drinking for days

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2018 15:23

@lucybex. Yes over 3 you need fluids in hospital

Mine hovered at 2.5

I brought off amazon. And were a few pounds

I tested every day and you pee then check colour of stick against chart

@bailey8 yes midwife tested me each visit

How many weeks preg are you both

Ttc2017 · 24/08/2018 15:28

Are strong stomach cramp pains a side effect of the ondansetron I'm still suffering really bad with them even though I'm taking lactulose so I'm not sure it's too do with that I'm worried it might be a hernia come back as I had a hernia op last year on my stomach and it's very puffy again although again not sure if that is just bloating but it's all up high not low on abdomen

Sorry to hear you have another funeral Lucinda :(

hope you are all getting by ok it's this depressing thing of wishing each day away as fast as possible isn't it which is horrible normally I'm a live each day to the full as though it's your last type person x

Bailey8 · 24/08/2018 15:29

I’m only 7weeks so I don’t think it’s reached it’s peak yet for me. Although this morning I’ve kept breakfast down for the first time after stopping my meds while I wait for a new prescription. I found the ketostix good just for a bit of reassurance when I’m feeling at my worst

Ttc2017 · 24/08/2018 15:32

The pregnancy sickness support line told me ketostix just measure glucose not hydration levels so they check if you are malnourished not dehydrated so if you have had a sugary drink even a little bit or a bit of fruit you will not have ketones show up but could still be dehydrated. With any other patient doctors would not assess dehydration with ketones they would go by skin dryness lips dry patients own explanations colour of urine and frequency of urinating yet with pregnant women you can only get treatment for dehydration if you are malnourished and low on glucose it's bizarre but unfortunately the way hospitals judge it x

Bailey8 · 24/08/2018 15:36

I hadn’t realised that, I’d eaten an apple before I tested today, midwife didn’t ask about urination or anything else. I’ll keep that in mind for when I test in the morning then

Hotchocolate86 · 24/08/2018 16:21

lucinda sorry to hear you are off to another funeral.
Glad you kept breakfast down bailey. It always feels like a huge achievement being able to do that.
I just bought my ketostix off amazon. I didn’t go for any specific brand but they seemed to do the job. It was helpful to get some idea whether it was worth going to the hospital or not.
I feel bad for complaining when others on here are so much worse than me but at the moment I feel so rubbish. I am 33 weeks now which is lovely but I am so tired of feeling so sick every day. Over the past week or so my nausea has been getting worse again and I’m terrified I’m going to start vomiting again. I haven’t been able to reduce my tablets so I’m still on ondansetron and cyclizine and I guess I will be for the duration. I feel like I’m letting my little boy down because I have no energy to play with him and we spend so much time watching tv now. In just a few weeks his little world is going to be altered completely and I really wanted to be able to do things with him beforehand. I know I’m so much better than I was and I know I’m lucky to be pregnant but I feel so poorly and fed up and exhausted. Sorry for the woe is me post.

Bailey8 · 24/08/2018 17:33

I really wouldn’t worry about not being able to play hotchocolate86. I was the same with my son in my previous pregnancy and he doesn’t remember a things about it. All he remembers is the good things like being able to watch tv and snuggling on the sofa

Lucybex · 24/08/2018 17:38

Ttc2017 I'm so sorry to hear about your cramps and I'm afraid I just don't know. I have been on ondansatron for 1 week and just had constipation and a few cramps from that but nothing like you describe... Maybe get gp to check?

Hotchocolate86 moan away! I'm so sorry it must be so hard to feel so sick with a little one and a big bump. Don't worry about your little boy though kids are really forgiving and once he's used to the idea he'll be delighted at being a brother and all will be forgiven! Is it worth seeing if they can give you more for these final weeks though?

I stupidly went to work today, fainted, threw up in the waste paper bin, they panicked, called am ambulance and next thing I know I'm in hospital on a drip again as I do have ketones... Second time in 1 week. It seems the more you do the worse it becomes so hermit life for me until the worse passes. I hit 11 weeks tomorrow and just so hoping it starts to ease in a couple more....better buy the ketone sticks. Thanks for the advice but what an annoying way of checking.

Hotchocolate86 · 24/08/2018 19:47

Thank you bailey. That’s good to hear. I hate feeling like I’m letting him down in some way but he’s only little so I suppose he will soon forget.
lucy that sounds like a very eventful day and not in a good way. I hope you feel much better once you have some fluids in you. Fingers crossed you will start to pick up soon. I noticed a gradual improvement from sort of 12 weeks onwards. I’m not sure if I could get any more tableTs as I’m already on the max dose of both ondansetron and cyclizine that they are prepared to give me and they wanted me to come off metoclopramide so I doubt they’d put me back on it unless I was very sick again. I think if I continue getting worse I will have to ask but I hope that doesn’t happen. Im sure it will all be worth it again but it’s a grind at the moment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2018 19:50

Please don’t think you are letting your children down if you don’t play with them etc

If little they won’t rememeber and tv won’t ruin them for a few mo the m
If older then can understand more and again iPads etx is fine

Yes if 7w then early days abs likely you will feel poorly for many weeks - sorry. Ok not helpful like Lucinda lol

But I’m honest.

Medication does help but even with it I was sick every day many times tho around 26w I had a Lull

But it came back
