I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

So Lactulose, I am reading on NHS it takes 48hrs. I am also reading : Aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluid during the day while you are taking lactulose or your constipation may get worse.

This would obvs not happen... And it's a sweet concoction? Coincidentally my vomiting and retching got really bad last Tuesday when I had to have a GTT ( thankfully came back ok). Or could just be that I was coming up to 9 weeks.

LucindaE · 20/08/2018 22:06

Alemna, if you are in the UK you can get those glycerine suppositories in Boots. The annoying thing is, that they won't sell them to pregnant women, though they use them in hospitals, so you have to get someone else to buy them. Lactulose is one of the best, but I am not sure if you can get it without a prescription. Fibrogel is effective, but not easy to retain with Hyperemesis. Liquorice can help. As constipation is so frequent with Ondansetorn, it is bad that so few doctors don't write a prescriptoion for an effective laxative, too.

DeadDoorpost · 20/08/2018 22:18

LucindaE lactulose is easy to get hold of without a prescription. I just walked in and asked for some

I couldn't drink much during the pregnancy but definitely try to drink as much as you can.

And it is a sweet taste. Might be worth having some fruit if you can straight after.

Lucybex · 20/08/2018 22:28

Hi really tired and had a difficult couple of days but just checking in and wanting to say it is so useful to read these posts and know we're not alone. Very helpful re the constipation too I'm really struggling with that too!
When the emotions get too much, to know others are out there having similar is very reassuring, although it also totally sucks and sorry for everyone's experience...
Waves hugs and good night all round xxx

I found the same Lucy. I had no support at all during the first preg and the HG was untreated and I felt very alone.

Second preg, I found this thread and it was such a lifesaver. Tips, advice and the sheer emotional support of talking to people who get it. Still grateful to LucindaE for keeping it going!

ohiwa · 21/08/2018 08:31

Hi everyone, just popping on to say I had a baby girl on Sunday 19th! 8 days overdue, 3.62kgs/8lbs. She's just lovely.
The nausea disappeared as soon as she arrived, I'm hugely relieved and eating everything that I can! The last few weeks had been so rough as the nausea and vomiting had returned.
I did have a big PPH after she arrived so I'm fairly weak, tired and dizzy. But I still feel so happy to be rid of the nausea.
Am so grateful for the support and info on this thread. And thank you for your sympathy on the passing of my grandma, it's certainly been an eventful, bittersweet time.
Best wishes to all of you still struggling through, I hope to pop back on and see how everything goes. And thanks so much Lucinda, you do such an amazing job of looking after the women on these threads. In NZ we have a word 'kaitiaki' - it's a respectful word for guardian/protector/carer. I feel like you're the kaitiaki of all the women suffering from HG. So many thanks from me!

Congratulations ohiwa FlowersFlowersFlowers

Lucybex · 21/08/2018 08:57

Congratulations!!
And echo thanks to Lucinda!

Hotchocolate86 · 21/08/2018 09:41

Congratulations ohiwa.

Olivecake · 21/08/2018 10:28

Congratulations ohiwa! So happy for you, and thank you for reminding us all that the end is in sight and there is so much lightness after this (what sometimes feels never ending) dark tunnel of HG

Lucybex · 21/08/2018 10:47

Sick in the bath 🙈 and I thought one might help me relax! Blush

Olivecake · 21/08/2018 11:06

Oh no Lucybex! Showers and baths are so tough when you’re this sick :(

Foodylicious · 21/08/2018 11:36

Lucybex I had a 'blu-step' to sit on in the bath for showers for a while.
It was the only way I could manage.
The shower was def one of my triggers for a while.

AleenaM · 21/08/2018 11:38

@ohiwa congratulations! It sounds delightful not to be sick anymore AND to get to see and hold your baby – this is my first PG so feeling extra emosh thinking about it. Halo Suddenly feel a bit better Grin

Bought Lactulose (from Boots, just asked for it and was given it) – ended up a close re-enactment of my GTT test exactly one week ago. Had 20ml then felt sick, stopped at the nearest shop, bought Rubicon. By the time I reached work it all came back out, looking and tasting exactly like the liquid from GTT. @lucindaE the Boots pharmacist looked new and a bit panicky so I think I can easily go back and ask for suppositories since he didn’t ask or advise me anything at all. Don’t think Lactulose is for me.

Does anyone else struggle keeping things normal at work & using the toilets if sick? We have a disabled toilet which is also a shower room but it’s very large and on the corridor so people can even hear a flush let alone retching. The other toilet is 3 cubicles so I always have to wait it out until I am alone. Since I don’t have HG I still go to work, I just am much slower at things. I also find that all day pyjama days make me feel extra sad and depressed.

Last thing I am going to add, maybe it helps others: because I am only week 9 and haven't had a scan, I haven't shared my news (and struggle) with that many people. However one of my close friends recently had food poisoning so I took the opp to tell her that’s how I feel, just multiply it by about 30 days. I really feared she would be the most unsympathetic out of all my friends (single and not into kids at all), but she has been absolutely amazing and supportive and now I can write to her at any time to moan and it’s so lovely to know she is there for me. So if you struggle, don't hold back in telling your close ones Star

Olivecake · 21/08/2018 18:13

AleenaM that’s so great to hear about your friend being so understanding. It is one of those things that some people just don’t get, so to have someone on your side who really understands makes such a difference.

Sorry can’t really offer any advice on the work toilet situation I’m afraid - unfortunately wretching and puking are quite hard to disguise! Would running the taps maybe help to muffle the sound maybe?

LucindaE · 21/08/2018 20:03

Ohiwa Wonderful news. Eight pounds is a good weight Flowers Star Grin Cake Brew. Enjoy her, you deserve it. I am so glad the nausea has gone. That is a lovely compliment, thank you so much. A 'kaitiaki' sounds much more cool than a Mother Hen. Do come back and tell us how things are. I am so glad the thread has helped you, Lucybex and SeaEagleFeather.
Aleena That's a very good comparison - food poisoning - poisonous babies? Wink. She sounds a very nice friend, and that is so important, as you and others say. I am glad you might be able to get the suppositories.
DeadDoorPost It's good that you can get lactulose over the counter.
Waves to Olivecake and everyone.

LucindaE · 21/08/2018 20:07

Ah, and Aleena I think there is a grey area between Hyperemesis and bad pregnancy sickness and they no longer use a strict definition, as one can tip over into the other. It is very brave of you to struggle on at work. It is embarrasing about retching being audible, and I don't quite know what to suggest. I am amazed what tidy pukers people are,and able to defer vomting - I wasn't. The floor often suffered, the stairs, the pavement. Wink

Anyone have trouble sleeping because they feel so uncomfortable? It's such a change for me- the past few weeks I've been exhausted and wanting to sleep all the time, now I can't get comfy, my stomach hurts which ever way I lie and I feel almost itchy. Then I can't relax and I am sick again. Is this the meds? Is it normal? My sickness is getting worse by the day... Am I getting immune to the meds? Its infuriating.... Any advice really welcome :)

Ttc2017 · 22/08/2018 08:41

I've had terrible trouble sleeping same things you saying stomach pains so can't get comfy crippling nausea keeping me awake and just a general feeling of crap but Yeh I'm so tired and drained and can barely move throughout the day I feel the same with the meds they barely do anything and it's frustrating as I've tried alk of them I think and nun of them are doing enough to let me function properly sorry not much help with advice but I feel your pain x

Lucybex · 22/08/2018 08:57

Thanks ttc2017 at least we aren't alone. Are you going to ask the doctor to review the meds- maybe changing the times can help? I found last night half a piece of dry bread actually helped me get to sleep... My stomach had nothing to churn on (even though all it does is churn it and expel it, but I figured I should help it!!!)
It's such a weird feeling and always feels worse and lonely in the dead of night. I'm telling work today... I've got by the past few weeks with annual leave and white lies but I can't hide it any longer.. I have to travel a lot and I just can't at the moment. It's annoying because I'm self employed and they are talking about making us permanent in September, i wanted to wait til then, I'm worried they won't now, but I can't wait any longer. It's just too obvious :(

Delly80 · 22/08/2018 15:29

I'm 11 weeks, and have started suffering terribly in the last week. I can't keep much down, and have also had terrible headaches. This is my first baby, and it's certainly put me off pregnancy. I've been given Cyclizine, which helps me long enough to get some food down and stay down, but after a while the nausea comes back and I throw up if I try eating. Someone suggested ginger biscuits, but after they came right back up I really can't face eating them again. Ever. I can keep water down as long as I don't over do it.
The thought of this going on right through my pregnancy terrifies me. I'm crossing EVERYTHING that it wears of soon.

Bailey8 · 22/08/2018 15:55

Hi all, I’m new here, this is my 3rd baby, had HG with both previous but nothing as bad as this. Sickness started from 4 weeks and I’ve just hit 6.5weeks. Cyclizine has no effect and currently on Prochloperezine which also doesn’t seem to be working 😩 currently signed off as I can’t manage to get out of bed. Sad to see so many others suffering with this

LucindaE · 22/08/2018 21:23

Welcome to Bailey8 and Delly80. Sorry you are suffering badly.
BaileyDo ask for something stronger. Ondansetron is considered the most effective, as long as you can get a laxative! As you are a veteran you don't need my usual spiel about kesostix, flat full sugar coke and an anti acid. This thread is very effective.
Delly Sorry you are suffering badly. Ginger biscuits are futile.Cyclizine helps many, but it is worth asking for stronger meds if they are willing to give them. An anti acid helps a lot often. Don't despair, things get better for most people between weeks fourteen and twenty. Even for the unlucky minority who suffer throughout, it is never as bad as in the first tri.
Have you got kesostix to check for the early stages of dehydration?
Some liquids that might help: full flat sugar coke, ice lollies, ice cubes, fizzy water, soda water, the juice of tinned fruit, Dr Pepper, Lucoazade,
Robinson's fruit drinks, Elderflower Water, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy orange, lemonade, orange squash, and if not too acid, orange juice. Some foods of a sort, cuppa soup, baked potatoes, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, slices of melon and mango, tinned fruit - particularly peaches - and Scoth pancakes. Some swear by biscuits (not ginger!).
Lucybex Can they up the does of your meds or add any?
Sorry you and Ttc have insomnia as well as everything else. It is very lonely to suffer from sickness in the middle of the night, when everyone else is asleep. Much sympathy. Itchiness seems to be to do with the skin stretching. It is infuriating!

Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I’ve actually seen a private gp out of desperation who has said I can email her and get a new prescription to try the next thing so I think I’ll ask for Ondansetron next. My pharmacy are getting me some ketostix for tomorrow as I think I’m getting close to needing fluids now.
