I’ve never used a lie flat seat so I’ve no idea on those ones sorry, but if they are able to lie completely flat in them I can’t see how that could cause a problem! Sounds like a good compromise for you Smile

sexnotgender · 03/08/2018 16:37

Mine comes with regular car seat, flat cot for the pram and regular seat for the pram when older. Lots of flexibility!

purplesmiler · 03/08/2018 16:37

I went to a baby shop today and was pushing around a maxi cosi pram that I really liked. Also likeing a Mothercare one both within budget.

Merrz · 04/08/2018 15:18

So much to consider isn't there! I'm going to keep browsing for now and plan to buy pram/car seat at about 30 weeks so got a while to think about it.
GinGeum just wanted to say nap, farm baby coming here too!

Reading through these messages has made me realise that I know sweet FA about babies. Makes me feel a bit panicky but speaking to my no nonsense Dad last night he assured me that for the most part you pick it up as you go along - so I’m hoping that’s the case, as he and my mum raised me and my sister and we’re reasonably ok as adults so maybe that’s the way to go! If anyone can recommend a no BS baby book though that strictly just tells you the essential things you need to know, id appreciate it! I don’t want to buy into a specific parenting model at this point (or ever) which most of them seem to do. Just tell me what I need to know!

We have put all of our nursery furniture together today. I say we... my husband and Dad did it while I sat and ate a lot. So happy with it, was such a bargain and it looks great. Now hoping that I don’t go down an anxiety spiral like the last time I spent a day around baby stuff. I’m waiting to start my antenatal therapy course and been feeling a bit... funny since I ended my last one which was just general stress therapy. Hope you guys are enjoying the weekend!

GinGeum · 05/08/2018 18:26

at Merrz

Honestly Buttercup you will be fine - you really will pick it up as you go along! Just remember to feed it and change it’s nappy and you will be grand Wink

Thamantha · 05/08/2018 19:40

D'oh. We picked up a baby changing table and wardrobe earlier this week and I helped lift and move various bits. I deeply regret this as I have had several back muscle spasms and I am in a considerable amount of pain. Saw the out of hours GP who has told me not to drive for longer than 20 minutes for the next few days, and my work is over an hour's drive away. :(

Buttercup53 · 06/08/2018 08:51

Thanks @Gin, people keep telling me instincts will kick in so I really hope they do. I’ve never even held a baby before, all my friends are older than me so I assumed a few of them might have one before I did which would’ve been great exposure but somehow I’ve ended up being the first. Spent a lot of time over the years around toddlers and teenagers doing volunteer work, so I feel confident around them, babies have always seemed just a bit more terrifying though. Going to see my husband’s friend’s 14 week old in a couple of weeks so I’ll have to bite the bullet and use it as a bit of a training session.

GinGeum · 06/08/2018 09:19

DH is exactly the same as you Buttercup (he even said babies don’t poo because all they drink is milk! )

Has anybody had any bad comments about having a January due date? It’s all I seem to hear at the moment. Apparently my child will never get any presents for their birthday, will always have rubbish birthday parties, bla bla bla. January is in fact the perfect time of year for us in the farming calendar, about the only month DH is guaranteed to be able to take time off for the birth and subsequent years! Plus it’s middle of the school year. What’s so bad about it?!

sexnotgender · 06/08/2018 11:11

My older daughter is also a January baby and we’ve never had an issue with birthdays. People just like to talk shit quite frankly. Ignore them.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 06/08/2018 11:11

Thanks for your reply the other day GinGeum

I haven't had any negative comments about the January due date. My DH and FIL both have their birthdays around that time of year, so they don't mind, and my parents are just happy that we're finally expecting - my mum has been reminding me of my age for a few years.

I've had a sore lower back for a few days. I asked my midwife about the advice regarding sleeping on the left side, and she said to start doing it now. It really isn't working for me, so I think I'll go back to sleeping in my usual position. I'm barely showing - I just look a bit chubbier than usual so I don't think it's too important yet - I suspect that it's more important later on.
My DH bought me a pregnancy pillow that I'll try out - it does look very cosy.

sexnotgender · 06/08/2018 11:12

I’d never even held a baby pre having my older daughter, I had no idea how to change a nappy. You just learn on the job, it’ll be absolutely fineSmile

sexnotgender · 06/08/2018 11:13

I just look like I ate all the pies! I’m 16+2 now and can still hide it if I want to.

Merrz · 06/08/2018 11:24

I'm 16 + 3 and can also easily hide it, if you didn't know i was pregnant you would just think i'd put on a little weight.
With the sleeping on your left side, i know why you shouldn't sleep on your back but why can't you sleep on your right side? DH and I have actually changed sides of the bed so i can sleep easier on my left side but my backs been sore since and its not nearly as comfy Confused

GinGeum · 06/08/2018 11:30

In the last two weeks my bump has gone from too many cakes to a definite baby bump, but I have a really short torso so I think it’s more obvious because of that? Who knows. I’ve been getting a really stiff neck which is a bit annoying. Also struggling to lie flat on my back now without feeling a bit funny, but am a side sleeper anyway so that hasn’t been too much of an adjustment.

GinGeum · 06/08/2018 11:31

(I am 18 weeks tomorrow though)

RiskIt4Biscuit · 06/08/2018 11:32

Buttercup53 I know absolutely nothing about babies either, and I think the last time I held a baby was when my brother was born 32 years ago. I apparently picked him up by the head (my excuse is that I was 3 years old and I probably thought he was like a doll).

I have no friends with kids, and I live far away from my family - where there are also no kids.

I have two baby books that so far seem pretty decent (but I haven't read them properly yet):
What to Expect the first year by Heidi Murkoff. If you know the What to Expect when you're expecting, this is very similar. There is a guide for what to buy, a guide on how to dress a baby, information about breastfeeding and formula, how to burp and wash a baby and so on.
I have liked the what to expect when you're expecting book, so I suspect this one will be good too.
and
First-time parent by Lucy Atkins. This book seems to go over similar subjects to the what the expect book, but it is a smaller book (and it has photos, whereas the what to expect book only uses drawings).
There are guides on baby massage, how to latch the baby on properly and how to change a diaper.

Both books seem to have troubleshooting guides and help with common issues.

The What to Expect book feels very exhaustive, but it's not the type of book I'd read - I'd use it to look up certain things.
The First-Time Parent book seems easier to just read, but I'm sure it will be good to use for looking up certain things too.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 06/08/2018 11:38

Merrz, I've never been able to sleep comfortably on my side. I get shoulder and headaches from it, resulting in migraines, which is frustrating as I can't take any medication for it.
Now, it seems I'm also getting pains in my lower back as a bonus.

I basically am the happiest when sleeping on my back - I did last night, and woke up without pain for the first time since Wednesday.

Obviously that may change as I get a proper baby bump as that usually means that back and front sleeping becomes very uncomfortable (or impossible), but I just think it's very early to be told to side sleep.

GinGeum · 06/08/2018 11:40

This is a really love baby book. One of the parents I worked for used it with her babies so I read it too, and it was one of the nicer ones I’ve read. It’s not bossy, which some books can be.

cryptonaut · 06/08/2018 12:34

Regarding the sleeping on the left side, I know that you need to do it later on when there's a much bigger bump but I'm not sure when you're supposed to start. The trainer in the prenatal fitness class I'm attending said that the Vena Cava runs down the right side of the body, if you sleep on your back or right side then this is compressed by the large uterus and baby which results in poor circulation, I would check that this info is correct with a medical professional though. I usually sleep on my front, which is becoming increasingly difficult as the pregnancy progresses, so I have started trying to train myself to sleep on my left side ready for when it's more important. It's extremely uncomfortable but if I'm tired enough I seem to manage.

My ankles are starting to swell a bit now, I blame the heat. But that combined with the growing stomach (I seem to be showing a bit now) and reducing number of fitting clothes is making me feel a bit large today lol

Buttercup53 · 06/08/2018 17:11

Thanks so much for the book recommendations and reassurance! I’m going a bit ‘obsessive’ at the minute, over thinking absolutely everything and this has genuinely calmed me down. An aquaintance recommended ‘what parents need to know’ which I’ve ordered this afternoon (seems like a bit of a reference book which is what I want), I’ll give these others a look as well. I want to read a pregnancy book but I just don’t think it would be good for me atm, I do a lot better with less to worry about, but I do feel like I’m missing out by not reading them.

Realised that I’ve well and truly ‘popped’ over the weekend. I also have a really short torso with long legs so it’s not a surprise really that it’s noticeable now. Felt kicks for the first time this weekend as well which is lovely and didn’t freak me out like I thought it would. Feel disappointed when it’s not happening! I think it’s havinf a growth spurt though as I am absolutely exhausted.

Wowthisisreal · 06/08/2018 22:05

Loving hearing about everyone's bumps! I've had people telling me I am starting to show this weekend and honestly I'm taking it as I'm looking fat 😂 I'm sure I'll get better with it.

I wondered what's everyone plans re baby sleeping first 6 months - Moses basket or co sleeping crib (or any other options!) Hubby and I are thinking co sleeping but unsure of the crib. If anyone is thinking the same, have you purchased yet? And which one did you go for?

purplesmiler · 06/08/2018 22:36

Just catching up haven't been on for a few days had an awful migraine and felt sick with it. Don't think the heat has helped it's really made me feel exhausted.

My belly has got bigger but it just looks like I'm even fatter I have noticed the top half does stick out more.

jennac · 07/08/2018 14:12

@Buttercup53 wow how exciting that you felt some kicks! Was it obvious what it was? (Silly question I'm sure!)

I'm 19 weeks and still nothing! Trying not to worry but it's haaard

sexnotgender · 07/08/2018 16:44

Ive definitely felt some movement, I’m 16+3
