Gush of blood at 12 weeks? Terrified!

CobaltRose · 08/04/2018 20:55

Hi everyone.

I'm 11+5 with my first child. About an hour and a half ago I stood up from the sofa and felt a 'gush' down there. Initially thinking I'd wet myself, I went to the bathroom only to discover bright red blood! Sad

Over the next few minutes it reduced to spotting, and now it SEEMS to have stopped. I'm not in any pain whatsoever and I'm still feeling nauseous and my boobs are still sore, but I'm terrified I'm losing the baby Sad

I tried calling the antenatal clinic at my local hospital and my midwife, but both lines were busy. I then called 111 and am still waiting for a call back. I'm terrified I'm having a miscarriage Sad

Any positive stories about bleeding in pregnancy? Thanks Flowers

Try not to worry. No pain is the best sign. I had three huge bleeds at 5, 8 and 12 weeks and thought it I was miscarrying each time, but I'm now 35 weeks and everything is perfectly healthy so far.

Your local hospital should have an EPU clinic and some are walk ins (mine is), so you can just turn up and request a scan.

Is your 12 week scan this week?

CobaltRose · 09/04/2018 11:06

@EastDulwichWife, yep! My regular 12 week scan is this Thursday! Two days after the scan I booked yesterday. Good timing huh? Would they still want me to attend my regular 12 week scan, or would there be no point since I'd have had one two days previous?

Hi Cobalt, when I had an emergency scan they did an internal one (I didn't find it uncomfortable) whereas the 12 week one is external, so I imagine they'd do both.

I have had a mc and my bleeding was very different to what you've discribed - no gush, just gradual constant build up of bleeding followed by clots and contractions. Wishing you all the best, waiting is hard Flowers

I also have had heavy bleeds very similar to how you're describing through my pregnancy so far. I've bled at 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16 and 17 weeks. The bleed at 16w saw me lose two pints of blood and I was admitted to hospital. I'm now 19w and things seem okay. Try not to worry but definitely get seen.

EastDulwichWife · 09/04/2018 11:42

@CobaltRose Definitely still attend your 12 week scan. If you get one sooner to check eveything's okay they'll just be checking for a heartbeat and to see that all looks well. They won't do a detailed scan to check the health of the baby as they do at the 12 week scan (nuchal scan, limbs development etc).

Good luck! Flowers

Cyclewidow46 · 09/04/2018 16:00

If all ok at your emergency scan then you should attend your regular 12 week scan.
The 'regular' scan will be used to date your pregnancy and to measure the Nuchal Translucency if you have agreed to screening. This will not be done at the EPAU. That scan is to confirm viability (see heartbeat) and see if there is any cause for the bleeding.
Hope all goes well for you x

Cyclewidow46 · 09/04/2018 16:01

Sorry just realised I've repeated what 'Eastdulwichwife' said!

Ohyesiam · 09/04/2018 16:04

I had a full on days worth of heavy period type bleeding at about 8 weeks. Carried on to have a viable pregnancy.
Best of luck tomorrow op

Hi OP. I didn't want to read and run. This sounds like it could be a subchorionic haematoma. It's a pocket of blood that a lot of people have but don't know about as a lot of the time they get reabsorbed back into the body (happened to me) or they come away and you have a large bleed (sounds like this is what's happened to you).
When they found mine on an 8w scan they warned me there was a very high chance I'd bleed but said as long as there was no cramping or pain it should be fine.
I have miscarried (not the same pregnancy as the SH) and I knew that was a miscarriage. I had such terrible period pains for around 3 hours and then the bleeding started and didn't stop for 6 days
Just wanted to give you a bit of reassurance.

On the pic attached the sack of baby is on the right and the bleed is the dark shadow to the left.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow for you x

Hi OP.

Fingers crossed for you, I bled when pregnant with DS and he's now 6!

Keep us updated!

With my first son I was in and out of hospital and then in total bed rest for the last 3 months of pregnancy due to placenta previa. It was a very heavy bleed with huge clots and I got severe anaemia and felt very unwell. I don't know if you can get bleeds at 12 weeks from placenta previa? I was 6 months along. Anyway it was very spectacular the first time and very scary, but baby was fine 😊. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Take it easy and keep us posted xx 💐

Hello I’m 17 weeks now and had a massive bleed at 11 weeks and 3 further after that baby was fine and turned out I had a haematoma in my womb I rested for a few weeks and it’s all stopped now .

CobaltRose · 09/04/2018 16:58

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all your advice. The bleeding has now stopped completely. Still no pain, and still feeling very nauseous like I have been throughout this pregnancy! I'm a little calmer now but obviously still very anxious.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I was diagnosed with anaemia at 8 weeks and have been on iron tablets since.

Thanks again everyone, I'll keep you all updated Flowers

So... update...

Just went to the toilet and when wiping found I'd passed a clot... I've attached a picture (gross I know but thought you should see it).

A bit TMI, but I have been quite constipated due to iron tablets so was straining quite hard. Interestingly the brownish blood has stopped since I passed the clot. Still not in any pain.

Should I be more worried? I'm so confused and scared Sad

ClareB83 · 09/04/2018 18:34

I passed a big clot too. It was still fine.

kirinm · 09/04/2018 18:47

I had very similar too. Try not to worry OP. When is your scan?

CobaltRose · 09/04/2018 18:49

Tomorrow morning at 10:40.

Fingers crossed all will be okay. It sounds really similar to what I've been dealing with. Despite it happening multiple times it is never anything other than terrifying. I now wear a sanitary towel, carry my notes and spare clothes will me - as recommended by my hospital!

ichifanny · 09/04/2018 19:46

That looks like what I was passing , I wasn’t in any pain either which they seemed reassured by , my whole bathroom floor was like a bloodbath initially hopefully you’ve maybe just had a heamatoma and passed a bit of that , will be crossing my fingers for you x

ichifanny · 09/04/2018 19:47

It’s so frightening though I spent the whole night so upset sleeping on a towel waiting for cramps to start but they never did . If you are in lots of pain or excess bleeding contact hospital overnight

Cat12321 · 09/04/2018 20:22

Thinking of you, OP Thanks

Frazzled2207 · 10/04/2018 08:01
