I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

There’s some evidence that HG is associated with thyroid dysfunction in early pregnancy so if you do suffer from thyroid issues you should be monitored closely.
The dysfunction seems to stop after a few weeks. I’m not aware of any studies explicitly looking at how it affects the course of HG or how it differs from normal thyroid function in early pregnancy but it might be something to mention to your endocrinologist

Endora44 · 02/03/2018 14:43

hotchoc I hope it helps! It really is a go with your gut thing - anything that appeals to you is the only thing you'll be able to attempt anyhow, then the question is - will it stay down? there is no way of knowing. hugs to you!

BTW, after a couple of weeks of preparing ice chips, I detected a bothersome freezer-smell from them (no one else smelled it, of course) so I started freezing half-empty little water bottles. Once frozen, I'd add small amounts of bottled water to get the same sort of effect, without the freezer-smell.

bored you are so right, I always have that the last few things I ate before HG sets in are the most nausea-inducing for the duration of the pregnancy! This time around it was soup, and, in the early days, just the thought of it had me retching.

poodle good for you, so happy your manager was so understanding! I hope you can find something food-wise that works for you.

I am so grateful that after such a horrible 36 hours, I seem to be feeling better again. I'm thinking about eating dinner with my family tonight - at the table - hope I'm not being too ambitious!

PoodleDoodleCaboodle · 02/03/2018 15:56

@hotchocolate86- will update once I've seen Endo next week. I'm on T4+T3 (had to really fight for the latter combined therapy and hoping the consultant doesn't take me off it). T3 made me feel like someone had finally pressed my switch to 'on' again!

In other HG news, I threw up my breakfast but am now 4 packets of cheesy watsits and 4 jammy dodgers down! Hoping they stay there!

Boredoftryingusernames · 02/03/2018 17:08

Endora so pleased you feel a bit better. I have had some meals at the table this week - though my plate always looks very odd and small compared to theirs (think my toddler eats more than me currently, and definitely a lot more variety). So nice to get some normality though. I am at an odd stage where the Ondansetron seems to be really helping block the actual sickness, but after I eat something I feel terrible, if I lie down eventually it passes. I feel so so sick that at times I almost want to make myself so that I might get a brief respite from the nausea. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled at 13+3 not to be chucking up, can really feel when the meds are wearing off though so shudder to think what I'd be like without them.
Poodle gosh well done you, hope that stays down and the eating continues. I had read about a high percentage of HG sufferers having temporary hyperthyroidism, hope it hasn't messed with your levels too much.
Hotchocolate hope you found something to drink! I think my family are fed up of asking me what I would like them to get for me and getting a 'I don't know!' for an answer!
Hope everyone else is ok in this freezing weather, and anyone having to get about is managing in the snow.

hotchocolate86 · 02/03/2018 18:02

I know I’m being referred to an endocrinologist but I’m not sure when I will see them as I haven’t heard anything yet. Apparently I will require obstetric led care so I don’t know if that means I won’t see my community midwives much.

endora and poodle glad you are both having better days. I hope it lasts.

Those of you that are taking ranitidine how much do you take per day? I just realised the burning in my throat that I was associating with vomiting is likely to be acid reflux so I’ve taken a 75mg ranitidine tablet to see if that helps. Until I can speak to the doctor on Monday though I will need to stick to ranitidine off the shop floor so I’m wondering how much I might be able to take.

hotchocolate86 · 02/03/2018 18:05

Hi bored I managed a bit of chocolate milk earlier and have been sipping at sparkling water all day. It’s not great but something.
The nausea is awful. I know what you mean about feeling you want to be sick so you might get some relief from the nausea but it must be lovely to not be being sick at least. Hopefully you will see the back of HG soon.

Anatidae · 02/03/2018 18:29

Whatever the dose on the pack is - usually not more than 300mg a day I think. If you stick to what the dose on the over the counter pack says that’s OK. I take twice a day

hotchocolate86 · 02/03/2018 18:39

Thanks ana. I will stick to the pack dose then. I just wanted to check that it wasn’t a lower dosage in pregnancy.

Anatidae · 02/03/2018 18:41

Always check with your doctor or the pharmacist if you’re taking any other meds - I was told the 75mg 2x a day was fine and it worked well for me

hotchocolate86 · 02/03/2018 18:52

Hmmm ok. Maybe I should not take any more over the weekend then and speak to my doctor Monday. It has definitely helped so if I can take it o think it will be useful.

Foodylicious · 02/03/2018 18:53

Hi everyone.
Sorry to read that so many of you are having such a hard time.

I have been much better since starting meds and haven't been properly sick for days.
Eating ok, but the nausea and wretching are getting worse and I've got more aversion again.

Am 8-9 weeks now so thinking of upping Promethazine dose from 25mg to 50mg.

Any idea if I should take it all at once or as a split dose?

Sorry I feel a but pathetic posting as I am no where near as bad as some of you x

Natsku · 02/03/2018 19:06

I took 300mg ranitidine in the evenings for half the pregnancy, none of the doctors I saw had a problem with that dosage.

hotchocolate86 · 02/03/2018 19:06

Don’t feel bad about posting foody. If you are feeling bad it’s horrible for you regardless of whether other people are worse. If you are able to up your dose I’d do it as a split dose I think over the course of a day. Thank you for that link. I’ll have a read through it when I go to bed.

Foodylicious · 02/03/2018 19:15

Thanks hotchoc
Just been feeling so wiped out and sea sicky again
I've made it through work this week but barely got anything done.

Thankfully it was enough for my boss that a couple of us made it in with the snow.
She's not really done any work either

LucindaE · 02/03/2018 19:38

Foodylicious I am glad that the meds are helping. Goodness, to forcing yourself into work in the snow and with Hyperemesis! Very brave. The nausea is awful.
hotchocloate I so hope the ranitidine works, and certainly chocolate milk is very appropriate for you. Grin
Good news that bored and Endora are feeling a bit better. bored I had to smile at your toddler having a wider variety of food than you, though it's not funny.
..And good news that Poodle's line manager was so understanding.
As others say, please see if you can get some kesostix from a chemists to monitor your urine, as hospitals take those seriously when they give a 3+ ketones reading, and I am glad you've got a sick note.
Anitidae You soldiered on, throughout the pregnancy? That is really impressive. It must have been awful.
Waves to Natsku and everyone.

Boredoftryingusernames · 02/03/2018 20:06

Hotchocolate I was prescribed 150mg of ranitidine twice daily, along with ondansetron and promethazine.
Foodyglad you have been doing a bit better, I would agree to split the promethazine dose - I was prescribed 25mg three times daily. Hope it helps with your nausea a bit more on the increased dose.
Lucinda yes I feel really bad when I am having just mashed potato and she keeps offering me bits of broccoli and carrots! Branched out to a little bit of chicken tonight, though have had to head back to bed to digest it!

LucindaE · 02/03/2018 20:07

Foodylicious I thought it is admirable that you are prepared to apologise to your sister for underestimating how awful Hyperemesis is; so few people have the courage to apologise!

polkadotpixie · 02/03/2018 23:37

@Foodylicious I'm on Promethazine 25mg 3 x per day. The doctor said it was fine to take up to 100mg/day split however helps most

LucindaE · 03/03/2018 09:42

Foodyliciousand Poodle Blush Whoops, silly me; sorry about that confusion! It's so nice that you could try and make it up to her.

Hello everyone. How are you all feeling today? It’s the weekend so another week down. It’s been slow but I’m pleased it’s done.

I really fancied a McFlurry this morning so got DP to pick one up for me but it was a bad idea. It’s not settled particularly well. Stayed down so far but it’s increased my nausea a lot. It really did taste lovely though.

The ranitidine helped a lot last night easing the burning in my throat so I definitely think I need to see if the doctor will prescribe me some. I can’t believe it took me so long to realise what it was. I’ve had the burning for at least a week.
