I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I decided to be a trier and go to work today. I only do Sunday and Monday and I had last week A/L so this was the first time since sickness set in. I was sick 5 minutes after walking through the door and I'm waiting for my lift home now. I'm so gutted, there's no sick pay and I have just thrown away £50 and likely another £50 for tomorrow's shift. I work in a coffee shop and the smells were just too much. I really can't afford not to work, I'm very worried.

Anatidae · 18/02/2018 12:59

I was very tempted to go to work and set myself up in a kennel on a drip myself........

Frankly, if you’ve got the right kind of IV solution, and an appropriately sized infusion set I would. I certainly would if I was still in a research lab environment.

I’m baffled at why IVs aren’t used more. When I was in the hospital with mine, no one gave me anything to drink for the entire time And it was so hard to get fluids. I mean ffs it’s a no brainer! I wonder if it’s a tick box thing that elevates you into a different category of cost or something

hotchocolate86 · 18/02/2018 13:09

How do you all know when you should go into hospital?

Anatidae · 18/02/2018 13:24

How do you all know when you should go into hospital?

I was told to go by midwife/gynae - referred up and they called me in that afternoon.

And also told if unable to pee in the day for more than six hours, if unable to keep fluids down at all.

I’d also say that if you’re wondering that the answer is probably to go. It is astounding what your basal level of ‘putting up with it’ ends up as.

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 13:27

hotchocolate are things still as bad as earlier? If you are still not keeping anything down I think you should go, even if your ketones aren't high enough for fluids they can give you a different anti-emetic - really needs to be by injection or isn't going to work. Where I live before 12 weeks you have to go via A&E, although they triaged me and sent me straight over to the pregnancy assessment unit who I could then deal with directly.
Do you have ketone sticks? If you do and have 3+ then without doubt you need to go. Good luck, thinking of you

hotchocolate86 · 18/02/2018 13:27

I was wondering as I haven’t kept any fluids down since 5.30pm yesterday. Probably I have been sick 10-15 times since then but I don’t have any ketones showing.

Anatidae · 18/02/2018 13:29

Yeah. Go. Not everyone produces ketones as easily. I don’t.

Go, do not provide a pee sample and make sure they know you’ve been x hours without fluids.
Poor you, it’s so shit

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 13:30

Yes, they were also concerned as I hadn't urinated for 10 hours, so they will want to at least calm the vomiting down enough for you to rehydrate on oral fluids.

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 13:31

I don't produce ketones easily either, I honestly think you will be really dehydrated and at a minimum need injectable meds to have any hope of not getting sicker.

Anatidae · 18/02/2018 13:33

I sat in the hospital for about four hours withvthe ridiculous:

‘We need a pee sample to see if you’re dehydrated’
‘I’m really sorry, I haven’t peed for ages and I can’t now’
‘We need to check for ketones’
‘I appreciate that, but I can’t pee’
Wee just sit here for a while

Four hours later ... oh OK then, we will grudgingly give fluids.

And it still took another six hours of solid IVs for me to pee which you’d hope would give even the dimmest HCP some indication that the patient was dehydrated.

Emu31 · 18/02/2018 13:44

Baby Emu has arrived safe and sound in early hours! Birth did not go to plan unfortunately and got a bit scary but important thing is we are both well now, and no nausea so far. He is just perfect and so beautiful. Amazing what our bodies are capable of and birth really is a miracle. As a first time mum I sort of (very much) wanted to punch people who said 'it will all be worth it in the end' with regard to hg, as it felt difficult to believe that sometimes - but it really really is. Yay to the pink castle!

Emu31 · 18/02/2018 13:45

Thinking of just today with the induction - you will be amazing I know it.

Anatidae · 18/02/2018 13:51

CONGRATULATIONS emu!

Hope you’re able to rest and recover and enjoy your gorgeous new baby :)

Good luck just !

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 13:51

It must be a cost thing....it just makes no sense to withhold fluids.

Foodylicious · 18/02/2018 13:52

Massive congratulations Emu

Be kind to yourselves, get cosy and enjoy those new born cuddles xx

Boredoftryingusernames · 18/02/2018 13:53

Congratulations Emu!!

Natsku · 18/02/2018 13:56

Congrats Emu!

Shehz21 · 18/02/2018 13:57

Massive congrats Emu !!
You have finally made it to the Pink Castle!
So sorry about things not going as planned but genuinely so happy that you and Baby Emu are fine and safe now.
Enjoy all the baby cuddles and goodluck on this new journey Flowers

P.S - Glad to know you are nausea free! Rekindled my hope for the nausea to disappear right after birth!

Thinking of justtheonethen here as well.
Can't wait for a lovely post back from her with baby Just having made a safe arrival into this world!Smile

hotchocolate86 · 18/02/2018 14:14

Congratulations emu. I am off to A&E shortly. I spoke with the midwives and they can’t refer me directly to the EPU so I think that’s the best bet. I have been keeping a record and have been sick about 20 times since 5.30pm yesterday and kept no food or fluid down since around then as well. I think I definitely need to try and get some help.

Natsku · 18/02/2018 14:19

Hope you get swift help hotchocolate

Foodylicious · 18/02/2018 14:22

Hope you get seen quickly and taken seriously hotchoc

Shehz21 · 18/02/2018 14:39

Goodluck hotchocolate
Hope you get seen soon and they give you the fluids. You seem like you badly need it.

Endora44 · 18/02/2018 14:41

Flowers congrats emu. sorry birth didn't go to plan, but it's over now. enjoy baby emu and the pink castle.

It's never easy and I don't know how much it helps, to be honest, when pple say 'it'll all be worth it' because our brains aren't wired to think too far in the future, we are very much beings of the here and now. and that must be the reason that some women go back for a second and third pregnancy, even after they've suffered through HG, because we forget how truly awful and intense it is. not right away, of course, but 5,6,7 years down the line, a baby could sound like a good idea again, and then you end up like me, moaning in bed, wondering how on earth you ever agreed to go through all this again!?!?!?

Endora44 · 18/02/2018 14:44

hotchoc my rule of thumb is, as soon as I start thinking about hospital, it's time to go! I hope they'll give you fluids. I also don't produce ketones easily, but some HCPs are better and more compassionate than others.

somebodys I am so sorry that work didn't go well. I can't even imagine working in a coffee shop in this condition, I thought I had it bad in a kindergarten classroom. Don't beat yourself up about it.

bitzy12 · 18/02/2018 14:57

Congratulations @Emu31

@Endora44 snap, 7 years since my last pregnancy. Had the daft idea that I might escape hg this time, convinced myself it wasn't that bad all those years ago, and obviously I am a strong independent mother of 2 already and I can deal with it.....easy peasy. What a load of bollocks that was, like you i spend most parts of the day when I'm not puking wondering how on earth I got myself into this yet again....then I remember.....all DH's fault Grin
