Not sure if anyone will remember but I had a horrible long drawn out miscarriage over Christmas.

Found out I was pregnant again 2 weeks ago, quite unexpected but tested and got dark positive line.

I cant remember the date of my period in march but remember it being quite early.

Anyway, had a slight amount of brown blood last week so went for early reassurance scan today.

Scan revealed (just like last time) a tiny 1cm empty sac. No yolk sac, no fetal pole.

Am I right to lose hope completely ? If this was a viable pregnancy how would I have been producing enough HCG for a dark positive over 2 weeks ago?

I have had blood taken today and will go back in on weds for 48 hr hcg test.

This is SHIT - am totally gutted, moreso than last time

there are perfectly good reasons that they saw nothing

  • they did an abdo scan (very odd - i have had many early scans - all were transvagainal until 9 weeks)
  • your sonographer was inexperienced
  • their equipment may well be shite (see my story about me being told same thing as you, then same day seeing a h/b at a private clinic)

where are you?

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 14:00

arggh

I seriously may crack up, keep lurching from doom and gloom to being positive.

I have been feeling more positive today but just been to toilet and have brown discharge.

oh poor thing

i know all too well the frustration you're feeling

how heavy? only when you wipe or on your underwear? (sorry if tmi)

scorpio1 · 02/05/2007 14:01

hcg levels sound good hope you are ok

lulumama · 02/05/2007 14:02

can you try presenting again at EPU saying you have more discharge ? and ask for a transvaginal scan...really odd you were scanned abdominally and by a trainee based on your last miscarriage

Tutter · 02/05/2007 14:03

yes yes yes

agree with lulumama

don't feel bad about pushing the epu for further investigations

3 weeks is far too long to wait - ime a week is more normal

Tutter · 02/05/2007 14:04

(do you have a sympathetic gp who will refer you to the epu without you having to go through a&e? - or does your epu accept self-referrals?)

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 14:13

The brown is just when I wipe and not on underwear but is fairly plentiful on the toilet roll (sorry tmi)

I am kicking myself now as I went to another hospital this time because I hated the sight of the other one last time.

The other one is probably a bit better though and certainly more equipped in terms of EPU.

Dont think I can self refer and dont want to ask midwife to change my hospitals again when I already did that

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Pecka

Agree with everyone else, you should insist on a tv scan now, play up the discharge if you have to (although i know i might get slated for that comment!). Actually, browny discharge is VERY common in early pregnancy and your hormone levels are way higher than you'd expect from a blighted ovum (obviously i'm not a doc but from past personal experience) so all round good news I reckon despite the discharge. Go get your scan, in past pgs I just turned up at the door of my local epu and got seen within an hour or so. worth the wait i reckon.

Tutter · 02/05/2007 14:15

if i were you pecka, i'd be on the phone to the epu now

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 14:15

oh pecka

have never done this before but

[hug]

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 14:16

Thanks, I wont tell anyone promise

Its so conflicting and confusing. I know I should be pushing it for a TV scan but should I not be waiting a few days longer to give change a chance to happen after scan on monday

OP posts:
Pheebe · 02/05/2007 14:18

Nope, if you're worried go ask for a scan, be bolshy if you have to, its you're right, especially as the discharge is new since monday

CuriousSquid · 02/05/2007 14:18

pecka, reading thru it sounds like a scan used by an inexperienced scanner. Please ring EPU and tell them about your discharge.

Tutter · 02/05/2007 14:19

but you shouldn't have to wait for a change

there's a very good chanc that if they'd done a tv scan immediately after the abdo one, you'd have had a different result

my nhs scan told me this pg was not viable. 3 days earlier i'd seen a h/b at the private place (i only kept the nhs scan because i had a bleed the day after the private one)

lulumama · 02/05/2007 14:19

so hard, isn;t it....pecka, if you can get anotehr scan, sooner than 3 weeks, you should x

jdd0709 · 02/05/2007 14:19

Me too - go and get a proper scan, those levels sound great! After my mc (low levels, kept dropping) I got pg again, had an internal scan at 6 weeks where they saw heartbeat, then a week later (7 weeks) had brown discharge sounding similar to you. I immediatley went to epu where they scanned again and said everything was still fine and was probably just implantation bleeding. I have a healthy 2 year old from that one! Don't give up hope yet - good luck!!!

jdd0709 · 02/05/2007 14:23

I would discount the first scan - just turn up at EPU with discharge as you would have done anyway had you not had the first scan - they will scan you properly and at least you will know what is going on. It is the not knowing that drives you insane isn't it? x

Glimmer · 02/05/2007 14:30

Hi Pecka. I know how hard this time must be for you and the only thing you want to is know for sure, either way.

From experience I think you have two options. a) Decide to wait for n days and make sure your are absolutely distracted until then: watch TV, take some time off and go shopping, ask your RL friends and DP to entertain you round the clock. b) Go and dowhatever you have to to get another scan. Ring midwife, change the hospital and go to the EPU even if they do not accept self-referral. Tell them in which state of mind you are and that you have to have some assurance and explanations (e.g.for the hormones), either way.

jdd0709 · 02/05/2007 14:32

or just turn up at A&E - as long as you are prepared to wait you will get seen at the epu if you tell them you have discharge.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 14:32

oh im starting to wobble

i have just rung the hospital and my hcg isnt back my hb is and thats fine although what that use is to me i dont know

i have a doula client that is 39 weeks pregnant and could go into labour any time, I have to meet with her tonight. What happens if Im miscarrying and she goes into labour?

gothicmama · 02/05/2007 14:37

Pecca I don't know what to say but if you want reassurance / answers than I would go to EPU for advice/scan . If you wait and see I would carry on as normal and try to put this to back of your mind.
