Not sure if anyone will remember but I had a horrible long drawn out miscarriage over Christmas.

Found out I was pregnant again 2 weeks ago, quite unexpected but tested and got dark positive line.

I cant remember the date of my period in march but remember it being quite early.

Anyway, had a slight amount of brown blood last week so went for early reassurance scan today.

Scan revealed (just like last time) a tiny 1cm empty sac. No yolk sac, no fetal pole.

Am I right to lose hope completely ? If this was a viable pregnancy how would I have been producing enough HCG for a dark positive over 2 weeks ago?

I have had blood taken today and will go back in on weds for 48 hr hcg test.

This is SHIT - am totally gutted, moreso than last time

My midwife actively encourages people to have the early scans if they are worried and also the full nuchal scans/blod test at the clinic I went to (hmm wonder if she was on commission???) and gave me the number (although had it as had extra scans done with dd1) I would recommend my clinic but since I am in Kent not alot of help to you

Have you looked in yellow pages for private clinics/scan clinics etc or ring surgery to see if midwife around who may be able to recommend one?

Glimmer · 30/04/2007 13:59

Pecka. I agree with Lula. I wouldn't give 5 cents for the results from such an early scan made abdominal and by a trainee. It's a shame.
I am sure you can go privalety and get a second opinion. Maybe wait for another week, this way it's a compromise between waiting and seeing more?

Gothic -- thank you for the info. I guess I have the specific qestion if you expect to miscarry between weeks 12 and 15. I was told if I hadn't mc by week 12 it wouldn't happen anymore and I would end up with an infection/calcification.

Glimmer · 30/04/2007 14:03

Gothic. I guess my posts have been very insensitive. I a very very sorry, what you have to go through and the waiting for mc is horrible. You seemed so strong and decided that I didn't say the most important thing first.
I a very stressed about my scan tomorrow (I leant about my blighted ovum at week 12 last time) and so am very focused on myself at the moment. Just an explanation (not an excuse) for my insensitivity. I wish you a lot of strength and hope you will be through this, soon.

gothicmama · 30/04/2007 14:15

no worries glimmer I hope your scan goes well,
I am fine about it all now and am just waiting for it all to take place, please do n't feel that you have been insensitive I understand how you feel and how worrying it will be for you I am sure it will be ok this time

in answer to you question Glimmer I understand that miscarriage will take place once the hormone levels change and this occurs about 12 weeks ie when teh placenta would take over.

Babylovesmuffins · 30/04/2007 14:23

Hi Pecka
No advice either but just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and have fingers crossed.

Thanks for the good wishes and sorry for mixing in my story. Thank you very much for the info, Gothicmama. This is very interesting to me and knowing this I personally will definitely opt for a natural mc as well, if the news is bad.
I guess it's the curse of a mmc that you always
wonder even or especially if you do not bleed.... All the best Gothic and Pecka.

Tutter · 30/04/2007 14:50

just want to urge you not to give up hope yet

at 6+2 my local nhs hospital told me this was not a viable pregnancy - could only see gest sac

the same day a private clinic detected a fetal pole and heartbeat

so much depends on the skill of the sonographer and the quality fo the scanning equipment

(btw this was over 2 weeks after i had a dark positive test - i first got a +ive at 3+5)

Tutter · 30/04/2007 14:51

ps i also had small bleeds at 4 weeks and 6 weeks

berolina · 30/04/2007 15:00

I agree with Tutter. Especially as this was an abdominal scan (rather odd to do an abdominal at this stage).

At 6+3 by my dates this time round (transvaginal scan) I had a sac, yolk sac but no heartbeat, which scared me as there had been a heartbeat at 6+3 with ds and I'd had 2 mcs after his birth. But I'm now 20 weeks and all is fine (apart from my dratted placenta).

Thinking of you.

helenelisabeth · 30/04/2007 15:03

Hi Pecka

Don't give up hope, I had IVF and they are very thorough with their scans once you have a positive pregnancy test and they WILL NOT perform a scan any earlier than 7 weeks and then they will only perform an internal scan. You may have ovulated late in March and your baby is too young to have the heartbeat detected yet. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Helen

lissielou · 30/04/2007 15:03

didnt see the bit about abdo scan, v odd. they just arent as accurate as v scans at this stage

jdd0709 · 30/04/2007 15:36

I had private 6 week reassurance scans with both my pg's after a previous mc and both were done internally and both times they said 6 weeks was early to see anything even like that. They cost about £75. Good luck - I think you should have a more accurate scan before giving up hope. Also, are the pg tests stillcoming up? I think they do for a good few weeks if the pg is viable.

lissielou · 30/04/2007 17:04

with all my early scans they were internal. i think ive had about 9 or 10 now

mad4girls · 30/04/2007 17:53

hi again hun hadnt realised about this scan thing ,i also had scans because of bleeding with dd1 at 11wks they used internal scan for that and had early scan with dd2 at just 6 wks also an internal

i would have defniately said they didnt use abdominal scans that early 1st ive heard of it anyway, i would echo what everyone else says if your hcg levels stay high, demand a qualified person give u an internal scan, that way you hopefully have a more conclusive outcome

take care goodluck

Pheebe · 30/04/2007 18:08

Pecka, I'm so sorry you're going through such a rough time. As every one has said, try to say strong until you have a definite answer. Over the counter pregnancy tests aren't really designed to give you any indication of how much hcg is there, they aren't sensitive enough so try not to read too much into that.

Gothic, Glimmer, I had a mmc a few years ago and opted for conservative management. I wish I hdan't. I don't want to worry you but I think you should be prepared. For me it wasn't at all like an early mc (up to 6ish weeks) which I've also had several of and which are more like heavy periods and best dealth with at home with minimum fuss and paracetamol. Because you'll be that much further on it is far more painful, in fact you're likely to experience actual labour pains as your uterus expels the pregnancy. For me it was extremely painful and traumatic and I got blue lighted to hospital in the end where I felt my body actually expel the pregnancy itself. I'm so sorry to post this here but I do feel very strongly that anyone considering this option should be fully prepared, I wasn't and it was terrible.

mummytosteven · 30/04/2007 22:04

sorry to hear about the m/c glimmer and gothicmama.

pecka - I agree with Lulu and other posters that an abdo scan wouldn't be as accurate as an internatl scan at this stage - I think that they can be up to a week behind in v early pg. Given both there was a trainee, and that you should have had an internal scan, I would demand a rescan.

When I was PG with DS, I had an abdo scan when I thought I was 7.5 weeks, no fetal pole or hb, then had an internal one 4 days later (blood test results were odd, consistent with an ectopic), which showed up fetal pole and hb and all was well. When they were trying to rule out an ectopic, I had a registrar do the scan, and a consultant come in to double check.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 13:48

Hi, sorry if you have read this message on other threads just wanted to update here too.

My HCG level on monday was 27,549 which strikes me as really high as last time my first reading was 816??? Dont know what to make of it and I suppose it makes no difference if they dont double.

Will find out later today what todays results are

OP posts:
Tutter · 02/05/2007 13:49

good lord, that's nice and high pecka

of course one reading on its own doesn't tell you an awful lot, but it's very high

let me do some maths and get back to you...

Tutter · 02/05/2007 13:52

as i said, it's something of an inexact science, but looking at a couple of sites your levels are typical of being 6 or 7 (or even 8) weeks pg

if i were you i would pushing very hard for a tv scan, and soon (sorry, can't rememeber - when is your next one scheduled for?)

PeckaRolloverAgain · 02/05/2007 13:56

I cant decide if the high level is actually bad news because on monday if my levels were up in the 20,000's how come nothing was visible

ohhhhhhhhhh its such a rollercoaster, next scan not for 3 weeks.

I cant find anywhere near me to do a private scan either
