I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is great: 024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

bunny ondansw4ron for me has worked a treat and apart from the occasion sporadic vomit every 7 weeks or so I've been pretty much clear. The nausea did come back something rotten about 3rd trimester though but i just upped the number of tablets I'm taking. And Yes, lactulose will help. Yesterday was spent in agony, shall we say.

DeadDoorpost · 15/10/2017 09:44

Also really good to hear from you Lemon. Feeling normal must be amazing! I honestly cannot wait for my time!!

LucindaE · 15/10/2017 10:17

Bunnyfluffy Poor you, I hope you feel less desperate this morning. You have had great advice already. To despair now and then when suffering from such a scourge is entirely normal. What you need, as others say, is stronger drugs. There is a choice of safe ones that they can try,and combinations. If you foresee any difficulty, or just in case, do contact Pregnancy Sickness Support as others say (024 7638 2020). They will have to ring you back, but they will, and give great advice. They have helped many women on here obtain meds. And if they prescribe Ondansetron, do ask for a laxative to save yourself unnecessary suffering 'at that end'. Also, have you got heartburn? A safe anti acid can make a massive difference to the nausea and vomiting. Things will almost certainly get better. Almost nobody - suffers as badly later on as in the first bit - again seconding or thirding or fourthing what others have said! If you have kesostix, how are the ketones measuring as a good indicator of the early stages of dehydration? Despair often accomanies that dehydrated state.
BATMAN You've had good advice too about Ondansetron. To be honest, a lot of people find that it stops the vomiting rather than the nausea.
Shez21 I am glad that you are seeing someone about feeling depressed. To be honest, this is so foul a condition that it is hard not to feel really miserable with it, and just plodding through one day to the next, but if you suffer from bouts of depression normally, you will know that it is that.
Oklahoma Cyber hugs. How often is the vomiting now? I am glad that you have DD to look at by way of encouragement.
Lemondrop09 What a lovely message. So kind of you to stop by and give that much needed boost to those in the throes of this scourge.

Bunnyfluffy Excuse that odd punctuation - more PC wobbles. Nearly lost that great long post! As below; and I do hope you feel a lot less desperate this morn.

Lemon so good to hear from you. I'm keeping my eye on the light at the end of the tunnel.
Bunny hope things start looking up. I recommend PSS charity. They are amazing. My dr is clueless and a couple of weeks ago (and from time to time, even now) I think about finding a way out of this pregnancy. This is my second. I can't believe I did it a second time. Sending you as much love and virtual support as I can. I'm a member of a local depression support group. Really helps to just get it out sometimes. I never felt connected to my son. He ended up in neonatal after he was born and that didn't help. He's 4 now and the most amazing, nutty wee thing. Love him to bits. It just took a bit.
I felt great yesterday. Wasn't sick and managed to eat and drink. Today I am on the coach, with a bucket just dry retching. I'm on cyclizine and stemetil (which I really need to spell). I have to call the dr tomorrow but not sure if ondansetron is the answer. The sickness has reduced but I am definitely not functioning. I am constantly nauseous. Tired. And doing the attractive retching thing constantly. Any advice. I can't keep on like this. Much as pjs are very comfy. Wink

pippanippa · 15/10/2017 15:41

Hi Lucinda, things are ok here, though it's been a rough day sickness wise unfortunately, no food kept down so far, so am just hoping for a better day tomorrow. Just trying to keep busy through this next week, going to try and book a massage or something to try and relax a little.

So sorry to hear so many are feeling so low, Bunny I hope you have someone to talk to in real life, it's very lonely and hard, it's totally understandable.

Seize, do take whatever medication your Dr will give you, there's no point in suffering unnecessarily - I wish they were willing to give ondanestron here.

DeadDoorpost · 15/10/2017 17:49

Lucinda I'm feeling mostly ok, just incredibly tired. My parents brought over their gifts so I got to open them... got several weeks worth of nappies and wipes, some clothes, toys, blankets etc.
I'm just.. incredibly tired...

Flumplet · 15/10/2017 18:19

Just started being sick again after 4 days on ondansetron. I am beside myself. I just want this to be over. Again I have spent the entire weekend in bed feeling like utter shite. I’m feeling a bit like a previous poster - like I’ve made a huge mistake having another baby. I seriously can’t cope with this anymore.

NerNerNerNerBATMAN · 15/10/2017 18:49

It's crap isn't it Flumpet. Have you got good support in RL? Is your GP good? It can make such a difference. Is Onadestron the medication of last resort or can they give you something else alongside it?

I'm scared that if this pregnancy doesn't progress then I don't have it in me to try again, I just don't think I can put myself or DH through this again (DD aged 4 is loving all the TV and beans on toast tho).

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Mustang27 · 15/10/2017 18:55

Ondansetron & other meds can be a go too, how many mgs are you taking a day flumplet? There is steroids as an option over the ondansetron it’s not the end of the rd med wise if they aren’t working.

Mustang27 · 15/10/2017 18:56

Oh and Pippa honestly I had a pregnancy massage and was in cloud 9 lol enjoy.

Flumplet · 15/10/2017 19:00

I take 4mg 6 hourly I can’t even work that out I feel so ill. Cyclizine doesn’t work and the only other one I have is metocloprimide but nurse told me not to take that with ondansetron as they can work against each other

Flumplet · 15/10/2017 19:01

My husband has been a godsend but I’ve never seen the same doctor twice for this and every time I go to GP they end up re-admitting me to hospital. I just want this to be gone.

Ameliablue · 15/10/2017 19:04

Batman, for me the ondansetron didn't take away the nausea and exhaustion or completely take away the committing but it reduced it to a level where I could keep enough food and fluids down to avoid needing ivs.

justtheonethen · 15/10/2017 19:18

flump I have been prescribed metoclopromide alongside 8mg ondansetron. The ondansetron doesn't work alone for me.

LucindaE · 15/10/2017 19:59

Flumplet Poor you, it is very hard to bear. How many weeks are you? Don't despiar, things improve a lot for almost everyone as things progress. As Mustang and justheone say, there are other meds that they can combine with Ondansetron, and steroids as a last resort. Are you on an effective anti acid, as that can make such a difference? Try phoning Pregnancy Sickness Support for advice about meds on 024 7638 2020. If they prescribe Ondansetron, ask for a laxative too and save yourself much discomfort.
Seize You are so right with 'it just took time'. That bond will come.
pippasnippa Massage sounds a good idea. You say they don't prescribe Ondansetron where you are; is that in Eire? Sorry, remind me.
DeadDoorPost I am glad you got some presents for baby. Smile
BATMAN Sad Hugs about feeling you can't go through it again should anything go wrong. Grin About your LO enjoying the baked beans and television! Kids are very flexible.
I hope everyone is coping and apologies if I've rudely overlooked anyone.

LucindaE · 15/10/2017 20:00

Flumplet as below. Ameliablue I am glad that combination helps a lot.

hoopdeloop · 15/10/2017 20:06

Hiya, can I jump in? I am almost 6 weeks pregnant and it’s kicking in already Envy I had it with my DS so knew it was a possibility I’d have it again.

Saw the doctor who has given me cyclizine and the midwife suggested ginger Hmm I apologise if ginger has helped people with their sickness but I got so sick (no pun intended) of people suggesting a packet of ginger nuts when I spent most of the day hugging the toilet

seizethecuttlefish · 15/10/2017 20:31

Hoop scroll back for my rant re ginger. I'm seriously thinking of getting a tshirt that says "mention ginger and I will kill you". A tad dramatic but having forced myself to drink ginger tea and then thrown it up...you get the picture. I'm on cyclizine and a tablet that dissolves on my gum (bucastem?). I can throw up now and not lose the gum tablet. I'm not sure if this is a talent or if Simon Cowell needs to know...but mainly it's proving the tablets don't work. Back onto dr tomorrow. I now don't need an appt, I've just to leave the dr a message. Mine started at 5 weeks, so I feel your pain. I just st want the glowy, pregnancy bit. The bit where people say you look radiant not grey.

hoopdeloop · 15/10/2017 20:43

Sieze I never got the glow (apart from sweat!). With DS I had cyclizine and stemetil and had to alternate them every 4 hours which seemed to help so when I see the midwife on Thursday I might get some of them.
I once took the bucastem when I was a teenager and hated the coating it left in my mouth. Congrats on keeping it in your mouth though Wink

Mustang27 · 15/10/2017 20:59

Haha Hoop welcome you have found your people, sorry about the HG and the inconsiderate gingering Hmm it’s so bloody ridiculous yeah cos my vomiting 30 times a day can’t totally be sorted by a fucking biscuit, silly me. AngryAngryAngry rage lol. 2nd time here too.

Flumplet I think 24 mgs a day is perfectly safe so if it’s 4 mg a day and you are taking three a day you are only taking 12mg please check with others before upping it but I swear ondansetron didn’t work on its own with me and neither did cyclizine but together they seem to take the edge off it was never perfect. How many weeks are you again sorry to ask.

LucindaE · 15/10/2017 21:34

Welcome to hoopdeloop. Sorry you are suffering. Did cyclizne keep it at bay before? As you are a veteran, I don't need to say my normal spiel about 'have you got kesostix' and give the 'flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, and the juice of tinned fruit etc' recommendations. You will find much support on here, and nobody suggests g**r.

OP posts:
hoopdeloop · 15/10/2017 21:59

It had to be a combination of cyclizine and stemetil for it to work, cyclizine alone was not strong enough Grin
Glad I have found my people! I remember being in hospital at 14 weeks, attached to a drip and an auxiliary telling me to eat something, the baby needs food Hmm Well thanks for that helpful insight, if only I had thought to eat the disgusting hospital food, I’m sure the sickness will be at bay! I’m only in hospital for the attractive night gown and good nights sleep Angry
I did find really strong flavours helped, I survived on salt and vinegar crisps, onion bhajis, peanut butter sandwiches and mints for a looooong time!

DeadDoorpost · 15/10/2017 22:08

Somone else who survived on the salt and vinegar crisps! Welcome hoop and comisserations on the sickness. Fricking ginger did my nut in 😂😂😂

Forgot to add earlier Lucinda that a lot of time today was spent by others in my family trying to get BabyDoor to move... and with their hands on my bump. I don't mind DH but the rest of them... I was glad they left soon after. Thankfully he wasn't up to performing for them

NonStopDisco · 16/10/2017 02:22

Having my standard 2am heartburn wake up call, so thought I’d check in.
hoop hello, and sorry about the ginger! I stopped being polite in real life when someone mentioned new Pepsi with Ginger, it was just getting ridiculous!

Found something interesting on my phone the other day- I didn’t realise the iPhone Health app was tracking my every move steps and activity, and it has a monthly average of what I’ve done. So March has perfectly normal activity, and April, when I was 6-10 weeks pregnant has very low activity, and over the months it increases until June (15-19 weeks, when I felt really good for two or three weeks, and then gradually decreases as we get to September, when the sickness returns and the spd kicks in with a vengeance. October is looking good though.
(Sorry, I’m a bit of a data nerd, i found it really interesting to look at, and a really good reflection of how I’ve been feeling)
