Hi and welcome cazzybabs!

Yay for 1st babies - although sometimes I wish I could take all my favourite mumsnetters shopping with me for their words of wisdom... I was in mothercare at the weekend looking at prams... OH MY GOD, the range and choice is just overwhelming !!! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? DH and I are just clueless!!

Basically it needs to be:

  • Small, light and easy to fold, as I will be using it on public transport (london buses - I want to weep just thinking about it!!)
  • I have an irrational hatred of 3-wheelers (I think it's inevitable when you live in London !), so it needs 4 wheels!
  • And I'd like one that faces both ways, that is suitable from birth
  • I'm not too fussed about having an entire travel system as we'll probably get a separate car seat anyway (ahem...when we get a car )
  • And I'm not at all fussed about having a trendy pushchair - dont care if it's cheap and cheerful!

Please help?!?!

Hi Cazzybabs and welcome! I remember you from the due in July thread before you MC and really really wish you every luck with this pregnancy. Hope you are feeling well!

Kitkat - not scared off anyone at all! Hopefully you'll find what you are looking for re: prams. I was also in Mothercare at the weekend as we'd like to get a new pushchair - the one we had for DS is knackered. It was a Graco one and although its not trendy or anything I found it fantastic. Easy to put up and down with one hand (it's done many many bus and plane rides!) big basket underneath which I found a Godsend and a bar at the front where DS kept his juice etc when he was older. And they are cheap too! I dont know if they do one what has the baby facing either way though I'm sure someone will come along with much more helpful tips - I'll watch with interest!!! I did notice in mothercare that did allow the baby to face both ways, but I dont remember the name??? Sorry!!

Mmmmm, that flapjack talk has made me hungry! Early lunch I think. I bought the ingredients for the flapjakcs on Saturday but only realised when I got home there was no butter in the fridge. So, that'll be an activity for later in the week.

Just adding my buggy twopence worth...

For buses and easy folding buggy you cant get one that faces both ways. I would go for a maclaren one from birth- that folds flat. Brilliantly light and easy to fold/carry...

I lived in london with 2 little ones before moving to Kent so I know what it's like on busy buses... but a lot of them now you can push straight on... I had a nightmare once on a routemaster...

DS about 18 mths old. I had a big 3 wheeler folded up in the suitcase bit of a routemaster. Rang the bell, bus stopped, put DS on the pavement, turned around to get pram out of luggage bit.... and YEP, bus drove off. ME- screaming! DS- screaming on side of road in Holborn (v. busy traffic). Anyway I was ringing the bell like a loon and screaming for the bus to stop... but it didnt, had to wait until the next stop... couldnt see DS... ran like a mad women.... fortunatley a lovely lady had seen what had happened and scopped DS up and was waiting for me! Anyway, moral of story is.... have a small light buggy on the bus!

cazzybabs · 26/03/2007 13:12

I love my Mountain buggy (this ticks non of your boxes KitKat30) - befor ethat we had a Graco which was easy to fold.

What ever you deicde to go for don't buy from Mothercare - use Kiddicare - much cheaper!

Oh my god honeyapple - that's awful!! I've broken out in a cold sweat just thinking about it!! Thank god for that lady! Stupid bloody bus drivers!!! Argh - they make me so angry

Thanks for all the tips guys - glad I didnt scare anyone off!! Think I should have done some research for turning up in mothercare... will do a bit of googling now.

God Honeyapple - you must have been terrified! You poor thing... There's a good moral there.

honeyapple · 26/03/2007 14:55

It does still make me feel ill thinking about it! and DS is 8 now!

I don't know if you can get a buggy that faces both ways that you can fold easily and take on a bus... Most contraptions ie infinity/bugaboo are massive and complicated to fold up... I watch my neighbour every morning faffing about getting her bugaboo into the car. And her childminder (my other neighbour) can't stand the thing! And she's been a childminder for donkey's years.
I think the micralite is quite sweet and good for buses, this i think can come with a carrycot bit which you can face baby... but not practical for the bus. Fairly reasonable price to... i think....

I want a new buggy now! My Maclaren is knackered! and my 3 wheeler is somewhere in a shed at my sisters... probably rusted and full of punctures...

Bodkin · 26/03/2007 15:59

Hi all

Hello Cazzybabs - I remember you from Due in July - that's fantastic that you have got a bfp so soon after your mc. And welcome to this thread - we love it here!

Chooster - A very happy birthday to you! Sounds like you had a lovely weekend.

Honeyapple - that story has given me a cold sweat and goosebumps! Poor you!

My experience of pushchairs is pretty limited. Bought a cheapo maclaren when DD was 3 months (used sling up til then) which has been fab, although DD has never been a big fan of being in a pushchair (no doubt preferring the comfort of the sling she was in for the first 3 months!) They are great - light, really easy to manoeuvre (especially with one hand and in tight spaces) easy to fold up and down etc.etc. This time round I have inherited a bugaboo! I'm a bit scared of it, but will give it a go, probably reverting to the maclaren in the end!

BabyMadwithBump · 26/03/2007 16:04

honeyapple three of my forends share your same story, so I have a real hate for buses with little one's so I tend to walk every were, My DH was telling me about a lady who was about 38 weeks and was sick on a bus the bus driver stoped and told her to get off, she had DD with her only 18 months old and the lady had to carry her and it was raining! (babies/kids and buses dont mix)

How is every one?

MrsMcJnr · 26/03/2007 17:09

Just popped in to say hello can't possibly catch up! Promise not to get so behind again.

Fettle - hope you are feeling much, much better about things

Greedy - hope your DS is feeling a lot better.

Hello to everyone, hope you are all well and blooming!

I was at the GP today. She knew about the MC, EPU had written to her. She was very sympathetic and had had one herself. Anyway, she agreed to test my blood for clotting disorders (I told you about that didn't I?) and I need to go back next week to see if the initial test was normal or not. If not, she'll refer me to a haematologist. It was great that she agreed to test me, I really hope (of course) that I don't have the family mutation but it makes me feel better that I am looking into it.

CD26, no OV yet, my software has given up on me this cycle and has pronounced me infertile!

BabyMadwithBump · 26/03/2007 17:27

MrcMc sounds like you have a great doc, and things are moing forward, still thinking of you, fingers crossed you will be joining us again soon!!

Bodkin · 26/03/2007 19:42

Hi MrsMc - I meant to post about the clotting thing when you mentioned it a while back, and then promptly forgot. I don't know the technical term for it, but is it the one where your blood clots too easily, iyswim? Almost like the opposite of a haemophiliac? I am no expert, but a very good friend of mine suffered recurrent miscarriages over 18 months, and was finally referred for tests and they discovered that was the problem. Anyhoo, to cut a long story short, they prescribed low dose aspirin while TTC and during pregnancy (not sure if the whole way through or just the first few weeks) She had her 2nd baby in January (only 17 months after No 1 - she was expecting things to take as long the 2nd time around, so got quite a shock when she got bfp on first attempt!)

Well, it may or may not be relevant to you, but either way, thought I'd mention it. Sorry to hear your software is calling you mean names

fettleandminifettle · 26/03/2007 20:46

MrsMc - bad software - calling you infertile after 27 days!!! How would it cope with Greedy and mine super-cycles! Probably would have classified us as not women, by the time we ov'd on day 40 onwards!!! We're both here though, so hang in there!! It will take time for your body to get back to normal post-mc. Most people quote 4-6 weeks after mc for AF to return - I think as mine was so early at Christmas, it didn't take long to get back to normal.

Honeyapple - what an awful story! Have to say that travelling on buses and trains on my own with DD scares me - flown with her on my own lots, but they don't tend to fly off without half their passengers!! Although they do get grumpy if she doesn't want to wear her seatbelt as soon as she gets on the plane! I kind of feel if she's done up by the time the plane's moving, what more do they want! You can be stuck on the ground for ages, particularly at heathrow!

Anyway, i'm digressing - prams - personally, I love my 3-wheeler, but then I'm a country-bumpkin. Fantastic for cross-country, pothole walks in the country! But we bought a lightweight maclaren when she was about 4 months old (for all the flights she was going on!!) [Not an extravagant family - my Mum lives in Scotland, so easier to fly than drive on my own with her and then other family live all over Europe, so she is a well-travelled little girl]

Feeling pretty crap at the mo, coming down with some coldy-virus. Really sore throat - really want a lemsip, but obviously can't have one - don't even want to have a plain paracetamol if I can help it. DD has just been sick through coughing - please let me not have another sicky baby, I HATE it!! Also my back and hips are starting to hurt - so wanted to avoid SPD with this pg, but don't suppose I really thought I would manage it. What is the type of chiropractor I should be looking for Greedy? Maybe, if I go earlier enough this pg, it won't get as bad later on (NHS-referral to antenatal physiotherapist took weeks last time - think I finally saw 1, a week before I gave birth!!).

Help - look how long i've chatted - best go now!

take care all
xxx

MrsMcEasterBunny · 26/03/2007 21:16

Thanks Babymad

Hi Bodkin yup, it?s called thrombophilia. I?ve read that most people with it get prescribed baby aspirin and sometimes heparin too when they are pg and that seems to help a lot. I?m probably fine but thought I?d better get checked for it seeing as I have the opportunity at the mo! Hope you are well!

Fette ? I know! What does the software know! Hope you fell much better soon!

Chooster · 27/03/2007 10:46

Hey MrsMceasterbunny!!! I like your seasonal name... Easter already eh?! Seems like not long ago it was New Year. Pah, what does the software know!!! Gosh, imagine giving up on this cycle already at CD26. I can only imagine it must take your body a little while to get back to a predictable pattern. I also so pleased that you seem to have a responsive doctor - there's nothing more annoying than a doctor who just dismisses your worries. If your tests all come abck fine then at least that is something that you dont have to worry about anymore. Good luck!!!!

Fettle - I never put my DS's seat belt on before the plane is moving either - no matter how many times they ask me. He likes kneeling up to look out the window at the trucks and planes and I can't see the harm. I remember going to Miami a month after DS was 2, so he had to sit in his own seat for take off. Because my DH works from the airline we were flying on we were upgraded into business class where you sit opposite each other and so he was miles away from me and I couldn't keep him in his seat. I had to bribe him with chocolate to keep him in place - it was the longest taxi of my life

Anyway must head off for another meeting - yawn....

Bodkin · 27/03/2007 11:30

MrsMcEasterBunny (very good name! - lets hope you get lots of nice, fertile EGGS for Easter!!!) Well, it's great you are getting tested sooner rather than later. It was very frustrating for my friend to have suffered so many MCs only to find a simple aspirin a day cured all.

Just loving this weather. Can't stop buying cheap plants for the garden from Woolies, so far I have purchased 2 grape vines and a blueberry plant, all for less than a tenner. Don't think I'll get anything off the vines for at least 2 years, so DD will be disappointed, but I have high hopes for my blueberry plant! Yum yum

Bodkin · 27/03/2007 11:34

Chooster - we haven't even been brave enough to take DD on a plane yet (hence we are big fans of Centerparcs)! Think we could jsut about manage it now though, and I was fantasising about a week in Greece at the end of May. Then I realised I would be very heavily pregnant by then and it would be just a very hot and sweaty week of not being able to drink any ice cold beers and have any fun! HO hum, we'll have to wait another 3 years now until we are brave enough to take this LO one on a plane

KitKat30 · 27/03/2007 13:08

Just saying a quick hello! Ridiculously busy day today, will chat more tomorrow. Although will say that I had my 1st offer of a seat on the bus today. A very nice woman could see me huffing and puffing and offered her seat. Love it!

Special hello to MrsMcJ - lovely to hear from you, hope the doc gives you some good news.
