I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@Oklahoma how worrying! Do let us know how you get on.

@Thingymaboob I get angry at people with no sympathy for our condition but then take a step back and think they've never experienced what we have so really have no idea.

After having only been sick once today I was just sick 3 times in the toilet within an hour, the last episode was seriously violent, throwing up food and loads of fluid I thought I was managing to keep down. With DS in bed and DH out at his hobby, I was so scared I thought I'd choke and die that I took my phone in to the bathroom with me just in case I needed to call an ambulance!

YoureNotASausage · 06/06/2017 20:49

Lucinda, I do have a wonderful nanny who is looking after me like one of the babies. She's quite excited about the new addition thank god. I just desperately need to feel a bit better because work is piling up and the kids do need me. Tonight they didn't even kick up that I wasn't doing bedtime for the first time (win!) but I feel so useless and behind with everything.

I'll try the cyclizine tomorrow.

Sorry for just jumping on the thread, I find reading long threads makes me puke but I'll catch up on this one when I can. It's so shitty that so many of us have to have pregnancies like this.

user1496771842 · 06/06/2017 21:51

Hi, I'm new here :) at 6 weeks and feeling miserable. I have one son and the pregnancy with him was horrible. Wondering why on earth we are doing this again :( Even more sad because I'm supposed to be seeing the Harry Potter play in London on Saturday and I don't know how I'm going to manage.

I was prescribed domperidone on Monday. Last pregnancy, I tried cyclizine but it didn't suit me at - I felt even more sick because the drowsiness was making me dizzy. After that I went to an out of hours GP when I was really struggling, throwing up bile all day, unable to sleep etc. He said 'I don't like to prescribe drugs to pregnant women' and sent me home. I quit my job and spent weeks living on the couch nibbling dextrose tablets. The sickness and vomiting never fully went away but it got a bit better after week 24, then came back fully in labour.

This time I'm more clued up and have tried to catch it early. I've got domperidone because of cyclizine not being good last time and because of the potential for a similar thing to happen with the other antihistamines. I'm also breastfeeding my son still, so that's a factor too.

I have some questions, if you kind ladies wouldn't mind? -
What can I expect from an anti-emetic? I still feel so nauseous on domperidone, like I'm about to throw up any minute, but I have actually vomited less. Is that all I can expect, or would you reckon that something else might work better for me?

Is promethazine 'strong' enough to help with HG, or would it only be used in bad cases of morning sickness? Are any drugs 'stronger' than others, or is it just about whatever works for the individual? I think ondansetron is possibly more generally effective, but I somehow doubt my GP will want to prescribe it because we're a struggling GP practice and they probably don't have the budget!

Sorry to have jumped on the thread with a million questions. Like the other new person above, I'm struggling to read through the thread because it's making me feel awful, especially if I read any words of food names! Thanks for reading :) x

Lemondrop99 · 06/06/2017 22:57

Hi User. Sorry this is a short message but I feel rubbish and just off to bed. Sounds like you've been treated terribly by your GP previously and I hope you get better care this time.

Promethazine can be effective, it worked better for me than cyclizine. Sadly it does make me very drowsy, but other women haven't been affected this way. It's worth a try.

Other drugs included Stemitil, metaclopramide (short term use only) or ondansetron. Many of us have found ondansetron the most effective but it can be a struggle to get it out of GPs

Check out this website, it's very helpful and the helpline is definitely worth a ring. Please try and get on some effective drugs sooner rather than later, as it makes all the difference (p,s. Hope you make the Cursed Child because it fantastic!)

DeadDoorpost · 06/06/2017 22:57

user I've tried 4 different meds and ondansetron has by far been the most effective. Again though everyone will be different and if you find a med isn't working then tell the Dr asap. For me the meds would only last for 1.5 weeks then become ineffective while others have found they help a lot more. The only one that had no effect on me at all was prochlorperazine.
Shouldn't matter if the GP practice is struggling because at the end of the day the health and wellbeing of the patients comes first. If they don't or can't help you then 111 is useful as is the pregnancy sickness website and phone line which for the life of me I don't remember it 😣😣 I'm sure it's at the top of this thread though.

DeadDoorpost · 06/06/2017 22:58

lemon got there before me regarding the website 😂😂😂

Lemondrop99 · 06/06/2017 23:01

Great minds, Door Wink

User, these are worth a read and also taking to your GP if you're having trouble getting drugs prescribed

Mustang27 · 06/06/2017 23:20

User are you me??? Still bf my son as well it's a killer through HG. I'm pretty sure the feeding increases the nausea. As for the meds iv tried them all except metaclopramide I'm on ondansetron and cyclizine at the mo and still suffer the nausea 24/7 and vomit at least 3x a day but this combo gives me an hour here or there I can actually eat a bit of food or drink and know it will stay down long enough for some nutrients to get in my system. If your gp point blank refuses tell them to refer you to your midwife triage at the hospital where there will be someone there that will prescribe the pills you need.

Don't suffer through this especially now you have a wee one.

Hey okla hope all is ok and it's just your body being an arse and worrying you. Hugs.

Weasledee how are you feeling. That happened to me recently and then I got bleeding and cramping but all was fine just turns out my body has a shit sense of humour. I'm back to vomiting a lot.

Presh1234 · 07/06/2017 06:49

Feeling very rough today. And sorry for myself. 8w1d 😷😷

OnNaturesCourse · 07/06/2017 08:52

Bit of a rant.

As you all night know I'm at risk of losing my job through closures etc and the new jobs being offered aren't something that I can do due to hours and days worked. Well we had HR yesterday and the lady came to speak to me due to me mentioning I can't, at the moment, do extra early shifts ... She honestly spent the whole time talking down to me saying she'd been pregnant and never suffered and that I should be over the worse now as I approach 16 weeks. She then went onto say I'd had a "rough patch" but was obviously getting better and should be able to be more flexible etc. I had to smile nicely and nod just so she would leave quicker, I know if I'd started pointing out facts etc she'd have been there with me all afternoon (and I really needed to pee so... )

Argh why can't people see that not everyone sails through pregnancy (and life Ms 'Just got to get on with these situations)

Ahhhh... 😑

Now that's off my chest.. Good morning all. Wishing you all a vomit and nausea free day 💞 I've yet to get out of bed as I can feel it starting, pray for me! Lol xxx

weasledee · 07/06/2017 09:01

Omg nature!! That's really annoyed me!!! Fancy talking to you like that?!? It's so annoying when people don't understand how bad this really is. The fact it's called "morning sickness" doesn't help out battle. Are you a union member? I'd be telling her how wrong she was and no, she hasn't a clue how you feel!! Ignorant woman Angry

isith · 07/06/2017 09:05

Thanks for your replies (renamed userxxxx here). I have a GP appointment soon to see what we can do next. Currently sucking the corner of a cream cracker and sipping ice water...

OnNaturesCourse, that sounds like a really tough situation - so frustrating and unfair that she is not listening to you :(

Presh, sorry to hear that :(

YoureNotASausage · 07/06/2017 09:16

Presh, I'm 7.5 today. Every single day is hard won.

Can someone hand hold? I'm going to take my first cyclizine and am so nervous. Mostly that I'll react to it, also that it won't help. I do desperately want it to.

flossyfloss · 07/06/2017 09:25

I just read earlier that metochlopramide is only short term, does anyone know how long? I've had it for 3 weeks and suspect I'll have it for another 7/8 weeks to come

mrsb87 · 07/06/2017 09:32

onnatures that's ruddy awful, she should not be working in HR with an attitude like that. Seems crazy to me that people still have no idea what HG is about.
presh so sorry you're struggling already today
isith thinking of you for your appointment, I really hope it goes well for you and you get the meds you need.
yourenot gentle hand holding from me xx

Good grief I'm really struggling today with my sense of smell, I just wanted to hide in my bedroom. Toddler has gone to group this morning, luckily it's just at the church over the road so they offered to have him so I didn't have to put up with the smell of a room full of babies and toddlers! So I have a couple of hours to sleep....maybe. I should put the hoover round.

weasledee · 07/06/2017 09:50

Mrs b put down that Hoover! Smile
Was thinking before about those people who say they never knew they were pregnant till much later on!! Just seems so impossible to me right now! Grin

Presh1234 · 07/06/2017 09:51

Thanks for replies. I'm actually a different time zone to you guys, I'm three hours ahead at the mo. Comes in waves. Hope it does one soon! Next appointment on Monday when I'll be 8+6. Have already had an internal scan at 5 weeks so hoping to see more on this one!

Lemondrop99 · 07/06/2017 10:41

Nature, honestly that's disgraceful. I would actually formally complain about it and say that if they keep pushing you, you'll end up more ill and signed off which will be no hope you anyone. I sympathise with your position, I'm going through a formal redundancy consultation at the moment and it's looking very likely I'll lose my job as they are getting rid of 90% of the London office Sad

Saw something this morning that made me laugh though, so ill attached a photo. Hope it makes a few poorly people smile

Hollyhop17 · 07/06/2017 10:45

I saw that this morning Lemon!

34 weeks today and it certainly feels like 34 years so far... Celebrating a one day non vom streak, that is how pathetic my life is right now!

Looking forward to our nursery furniture being delivered today. Hopefully will be able to update with a pic by Sunday evening.

The nausea is pretty rough today. Sorry to those not having a good day.

Lemondrop99 · 07/06/2017 10:49

34 weeks!!!! Oh that's so tantalisingly close now. I'm both happy for you and also a little bit jealous! You really are getting there, just a bit longer to hang on. Can't wait to see pics of the Mickey-tastic nursery Grin

millsbynight · 07/06/2017 11:09

Omg @OnNaturesCourse 😦 I echo everyone else in saying that's disgusting behaviour and you should complain. You poor thing!

When I try to explain what HG is I say it's the thing Kate Middleton had. Without her I think our cause would be even less understood.

@Lemondrop99 😂😂 that's so funny! Going to send that to a few friends and DH now.

Yes yes @weasledee when they're like 'oh! I'm 11 weeks pregnant and didn't even know'. What??? No, seriously what??!!

Not jealous at all of @Hollyhop17 being 34 weeks. So close to the pink castle!! Can't wait to see a pic of the nursery.

I'm currently "enjoying" first day off work. Was nauseous this morning but so far no vom. DS very excited that I'm around for all school drop off and pick up next few weeks although I look like absolute death, pale and gaunt, no energy to even brush my hair or bother to change out of my mismatched trackie Bs and old jumper. DS goes to posh private school (paid by ExP's parents. I'm way too poor for that!) and the look on the other mums faces when they saw me 🙈 I'm too tired and ill to care.

HaichM · 07/06/2017 11:30

Wow, there has been lots going on so sorry if I miss anyone out.

Peace and Four: congrats on reaching the pink castle. Sorry you had fun with EMCs and NICU but hope all is well now and you can just enjoy being mummys without the HG trauma.

Holly: woo on 34 weeks and nursery furniture delivery. I bet that's exciting and I hope you enjoy setting everything up.

Sorry we've had more newcomers and that people are still suffering through the horrible 8-12 weeks part. I'm sorry as well some are experiencing unsympathetic medical or HR professionals. Try not to worry about work - they can cope and your health and wellbeing is more important. I second/third the recommendations for making sure you try and find which meds work for you and rest as much as you can. Try not to feel guilty about not being a good mum to other LOs. They will forgive you, probably not remember it and are gaining a sibling to love and play with. They will appreciate whatever you do manage when you can manage it and hopefully you will be one of the fortunate whose symptoms ease 16-20 weeks, allowing you to do more.

My sickness pretty much stopped at 16 weeks and my vomiting eased quite quickly, so hopefully you will be the same whoever it was who mentioned it.

To the person who's just returned to work, I hope all is well but don't feel bad about wishing to be on mat leave already. I was exactly the same - came back to work around week 21 and began counting down to going off straight away. Not long left for me now.

Sending waves and best wishes to everyone. Mellee hope you're doing OK.

YoureNotASausage · 07/06/2017 11:48

My GP was so good yesterday. I walked in and he said 'what can I help you with today, last time we talked it was about the pill, how's that going'.....

When I asked him about drugs he said he had no hesitation prescribing for me because he knows I'm a very stoic person and wouldn't be asking unless I really was desperate and rotten sick. I burst into tears😟

I've family coming over for a play date this weekend and I just can't put a brace face on. We're not telling anyone, preferably till the child is starting school, so I don't want them all to start speculating.

Hopefully the cyclizine helps.

DeadDoorpost · 07/06/2017 11:58

your your Dr sounds like my Dr every time I need different meds. He s always like 'the last ones not working? Ok what shall we try next. Here's 2 different ones I hope they work for you'

DeadDoorpost · 07/06/2017 12:18

And guys I'm having a problem.. I think the ondansetron is starting to wear off... just been sick since being on it this isn't good. Will see if it was just a fluke but blimey I am not gonna be happy if it is wearing off.
