Just had 20 week scan...

I wanted to know what it was, OH didn't. So we came to this compromise...

Help me!!!

I didn't want to know, DH did but we didn't ask and then I had a late scan at 37 weeks and they accidentally told me. I was fine about it and ready to know by then. Was also God for me as it wasn't what I thought so I had a few weeks to get used to it. DH guessed correctly.

Also depends on reason oh doesn't want to know. My reason was because I didn't want to get more invested if something went wrong. I was one of those ones in pregnancy that despite feeling things and seeing things it didn't seem real.

Open the envelope! (With your DH, obviously) It's a surprise whether you find out now or on the day!

How about do it on Valentine's Day?

If you have a kid already get them to announce it or a parent if you're close.

I know someone who did that and then they threw it in the bin outside the hospital coz neither of them wanted the responsibility of holding on to it!

For what it's worth, I'm due DC4, have only found out once and I think it's better keeping it a surprise!

Oh I don't think I could resist knowing it was in the envelope. You must be a stronger woman than me!

It's better not to know, OP! It's such a great feeling on the day when you find out.

It's weird, now I have it in the envelope, I don't feel that desperate desire to open it, where as before & at the scan, my heart was pounding & everything because it was like it was a now or never (well 20 weeks) type thing. But having it here has taken away the urgency.

I keep using that excuse, it's a surprise now or at the time so we might aswell just know haha! It's weird how it can be such a big thing, I literally have no preference to either sex but still want to know

Also I know two couples that were told it was a girl but they ended up having boys so it's not always correct!

I'm trying so hard to leave it alone, the fact I haven't touched it since 11 this morning is a miracle!

We're just opposite when it comes to things like this, I'm the most impatient person in the world where as he doesn't mind waiting for things, so he's happy to have the surprise at the end. The only thing stopping me from opening it at the moment is that I'm trying not to ruin that for him. I have said I could always open it & not tell him

My cousin has been doing this to me all day haha believe me I don't need much encouragement haha! My mum has only just left after looking after my youngest while we went for the scan, so maybe I can start working on him now. I mean, just because we know, doesn't mean we have to tell everyone else how weak we are & gave in

If the decision was that you didn't want to know, then why did you get it written down, just out of interest? We decided not to find out (I wanted to find out more than DH did) and I am happy with that choice but if I had had the temptation of it in an envelope i never could have resisted peeking!

My dp didn't want to know, and before I conceived I'd always said I would want a surprise too. The second I found out I was pregnant I was desperate to know, but I somehow managed to hold off as I figured he got so little say in the whole process that it was one thing I could let him have. I had about seven or eight scans in all, and even at the additional later growth scans, which he didn't attend, I resisted finding out.

In the end dp was the one to tell me that we were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, whilst I was off my tits on an operating table, and that was pretty special. I am really glad I waited, and I would do so again. Like a pp said, it's one of nature's loveliest surprises.

Because we genuinely couldn't agree, I want to know, he doesn't. So it was a bit of a compromise that we'd do this & it would be there if I started rocking back & forth in the corner of the room through not knowing!

Still haven't forgiven the stupid theatre nurse for giggling and not telling me DH if it was a boy or girl and then shouting to the other nurse to get a pink hat

I think if you already have another child it can be nice for them to know if they're getting a brother or sister so it makes it more real for them (but then I found out both times so I'm obviously in the 'I liked knowing camp') Really though it's up to you and your DH!

Shred the envelope and wait for the birth. I think you might feel quite deflated once you open it. If you wait for the birth you will be looking at the joint most beautiful thing you have ever seen, so you know that you will be elated when you find out.

It is of course your decision, but it has been built up so much now that I think you will regret opening the envelope.
