I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

It was measuring as 2.3, but this was in the US (I had some bleeding while on holiday so was in hospital where told me it was considered short by US standards). This is my first though and I have read conflicting things about how bothered they are when its your first pregnancy. Consultant appt tomorrow, so fingers crossed it was either measured wrong or has grown.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/01/2017 16:36

def get it checked out, think its usually 25mm they like to have a stitch so if yours is less needs to be seen asap

Hollyhop17 · 17/01/2017 17:00

Here's a bit of light relief for you all... I was having a good day, had breakfast and, shockingly, nausea free for a few hours. I didnt know what to do with myself, managed a bit of personal grooming, like running a brush through my hair, and even managed some chores. So with my new found confidence I rang up a new dentist to register and make use of my free dental. As luck would have it they had a cancellation for today so I thought, not feeling too bad, why not.

BIG mistake. As soon as I arrived, I started gagging, the smells really put me off. I was told I grind my teeth so need a nightguard. The dentist put a mould thing in my mouth and in my defence I did manage to shout out a warning, but was promptly sick everywhere Shock. Been heaving since I got home. The glamour of being pregnant never ends does it?!

Really hope others have had a good day and good commutes for you amazing people struggling into work!

HaichM · 17/01/2017 17:21

Glad to see we're feeling a little more positive among the horrendousness Smile.

Can I just say how much I hate being thirsty and unable to quench it properly? I will not take being able to drink and enjoy it for granted again.

Good luck with sorting the meds Holly.

Blondes: sounds entertaining at the mw. At least you know all is well with all that moving around.

Mama: I don't have a bucket. I just use the toilet. Splash back is not good.

Me: got a letter yesterday with my 12w scan date which is next week so that's exciting. I'm looking forward to checking the little tyrant is doing ok. I also managed a driving lesson and didn't do too badly. Felt more nauseous walking to and from the car than behind the wheel, which makes we wish I could already drive... Otherwise, my nausea seems to have picked up. Am sure my current cough is not helping and neither is the bad taste/after taste I still suffer with. Determined to start trying every type of sweet I can find until I get to one that works.

My mum is over at the moment. Was meant to be a flying visit to see me but now she's staying as her car has developed an issue with the oil and is at the garage nearby. Apparently when she rang DH to check how I was, he told her he thought I was feeling a bit down about not really being able to go out anywhere or do anything so she offered to come over and take me out. I will try and make the most of it tomorrow.

Anyway, hope things continue to stay positive or at least copeable for us all. I'm just trying to take one day at a time and not think about having to return to work in 2 weeks or how long I still have left...

HaichM · 17/01/2017 17:26

Holly you're far more daring than me. As soon as I started suffering with morning sickness I asked if I could postpone my fillings. No idea when they're going to get done as I know I will be exactly the same as you if I went, especially as I have anxiety issues about needles and don't like them messing in my mouth.

Go you for trying though!

Hollyhop17 · 17/01/2017 17:46

Yeah in hindsight it was a terrible idea. But I so badly wanted to do normal things while I was feeling a bit better that I pushed it too far... Still, hoping my embarrassment might have put a smile on some of your faces! The dentist was very kind about the whole thing!

Daffodil397 · 17/01/2017 17:46

Hello everyone! Just come on here for a quick wail of despair Smile
After 4 days off, fri was annual leave and mon is my non working day, I couldn't make it in to work today. Just shattered and nauseous. Got a big week this week as boss away. I'm sure work have started to guess but am not looking forward to that conversation. Just don't like letting everyone down and also kind of coming to terms a bit with the fact that I will have to leave a good job role that I only just got my teeth into after dd1, cos childcare too expensive with 2 little ones. Argh.
Having said that, although nauseous today I haven't chucked up which is something and I've got into let it shine on catch up, am quite a big fan of Gary Barlow and it reminds me when take that came to our school to play a gig when they were trying to get famous, we were a girls grammar and Jason orange took his top off and we almost died with excitement. Headmistress was cross Smile
I'm week 10 which if anything is proving to be slightly more hideous than week 9. Big dramatic sigh. Must remember I will have a cute little baby to cuddle at the end of this!!!!
Hello to everyone, good to know I'm not the only grumpy pukey one in the world :-)
Xxx

Southlondon321 · 17/01/2017 19:01

Sick bucket ... www.diy.com/departments/bq-orange-plastic-12-l-bucket/257478_BQ.prd
catches 12 litres!!!!!

Mama - thanks for the tip for travel! I'll have a look into it, i love a recommendation. Also will look at other places suggested. Thanks all.

Mama - SMP is calculated considering a critical period of time over x weeks that your earnings are considered and it can mean smp lowered if you earn less than normal. I have ssp, so if off sick in jan and Feb - my critical weeks - I end up with my calculations being low. I haven't explained this very well so will ask for a HR expert pal to explain and I'll re-post x

LucindaE · 17/01/2017 19:05

SouthLondon I didn' t know they had opened baths again at Bath! The thermal spa sounds great. But so does Winchester.
IAmSerious You are so right about the issue of an orange bucket packed with a Hyperemesis survival kit - but perhaps it should have a nice picture at the bottom! Bucks- I was born in Amersham. It's the loveliest countryside...
MamaErmintrude That is impressively low blood pressure.
Blondes and Hollyhop I never knew that about short cervixes. Blondes that sounds like a careless piece of surgery! Hollyhop Glad you are phoning the advice number. Dentists horror is grimly comical - but very brave of you to attend a dental appointment at all suffering from this.
Melleebacca Much sympathy. Gentle cyber pats on offer.
Daffodil and the same...You have every reason to be grumpy.
HaichM To get by without a bucket, you must be very tidy at puking.
My goodness, you are a brave lot. A driving lesson with Hyperemesis?!
Good news on scan date.
Waves to whoate user and everyone. I hope everyone is coping.
LightTripper How are things?

Think they just had a different method 2 decades ago. They picked it up at once tho mine is shorter it's not low enough for a stitch. WHere as the other lady (sorry forgotten name. Baby brain) her measurements are too low :(

If you Ever read infertility boards there's a lady called Blue on there whose son sadly died as went into Prem labour

Could have been prevented with a stitch. She is now preg again and had to fight for a stitch but is now having one

I think all cervix should be checked at scans. Literally takes seconds with dildo cam

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 18/01/2017 07:39

Morning all! I am so tired today, I could barely crawl out of bed. The idea of the next 2 days of work is a bit daunting to be honest. But I do at least have Friday off to look forward to. I'm not sleeping very well, and I think that's making other symptoms worse.

Holly the dentist is bad at the best of times, but I haven't braved it since the sickness started. My fear was the smells and prodding would trigger me. I doubt you are the first to have been sick there, and won't be the last, I'll bet they set off people's gag reflexes all the time! Sorry you had a rotten experience though.

Haitch excellent news on having a scan date. I think it really helps to have things to look forward to. And nice for you to have your mum around too.

Daffodil I found I had to come clean at work quite early. I also wanted my sickness recorded as pregnancy related as that doesn't count towards your Bradford score. I was also very nervous, but once it was out there it definitely made life a bit easier. And don't hesitate to take as much time off as you need, overdoing it only prolongs the issue in my experience.

Lucinda a picture for the bucket base is an excellent idea. I'll get to the workshop...
ah small world! I drive to Amersham to pick up the tube into London. It is a nice bit of the world.

Southlondon321 · 18/01/2017 08:49

Morning all. As usual my interpretation was extremely badly explained!!!!! Here is smp info:
Whichever sunday falls in the week of your due date count 15 weeks back from then to get to your qualifying week. The key pay period is then the 8 weeks leading up to that qualifying week. This 8 week period is known as the 'reference period' and is what determines how much you will receive during the first 6 weeks mat leave. Any questions, fire them at me and I'll pass on for an answer.

Hope all well. Got a headache today but not as bad as have had in the past (hopefully!!) x

Pip1982 · 18/01/2017 08:52

Morning all, how are you all doing today? I'm still off work- been signed off until Monday but I may extend it depending on sick pay (need to check this with HR). you're all right, it's still early days and I'm gonna feel like absolute crap. I do feel more positive today surprisingly, but the last few days I've been really down. Haich Met line? I'm the same but a different branch Smile I'm too will never take being able to drink for granted again. not being able to quench this insatiable thirst is torture! Midwife appointment a week today (I got the date wromg) and I imagine a dating scan soon after. Cannot wait for that Smile

fourcorneredcircle · 18/01/2017 09:47

Hello all, sorry I've been a bit quiet.

Thanks for sharing your blood groups. I find it so strange that RH- seems to be so common in HG, especially since only 15% of the UK's population are (I know we have Irish and antipodeian on here too, of course). However, lots of actual scientists and doctors have found no link, yes... I spent some time on google scholar getting my geek on! So, maybe our current concentration is an anomaly.

Had a good day Monday, didn't even get a bile run! Tuesday too, although today has had such a poor start that I've had to phone work to tell them I'm not coming in. At least I can spend some quality time in my lovely new bed...

Hollyhop17 · 18/01/2017 10:06

Morning all, hope most of you are having a good day. Sorry to hear you aren't Four, though I hope you enjoy your new bed! I had such a good day yesterday, being sick all over the dentist aside, that I niavely thought it might be over. No such luck, woke up feeling sick instsntly and already had a couple of dry heaving sessions.

Welcome to the 2nd trimester, for me it sadly feels like the first... My continued admiration for those at work. I'm signed off until the end of the month, though running out of sick pay so likely to have to go back in Feb.

Off to my consultant appointment, think long cervix thoughts!

LightTripper · 18/01/2017 12:34

Holly I'm very impressed you even attempted the dentist! I know how easy it is to get carried away when you have a good day though, and end up trying to do too much.

Haich I always found pear drops good for the nasty taste in your mouth (no good for teeth but ... meeeeeh!) You can get packs of pear drops and lots of other "traditional" sweets to try from Tesco.

All fine here. Busy week at work so tired, but crossing off lots of stuff, so hopefully will be able to start doing some proper handover next week .... eeek! Suddenly feeling close. I'm both scared but also can't wait! Yes yes to looking forward to enjoying a drink. Especially a nice cold glass of water. I haven't enjoyed water (unless fizzy) since about week 5 and usually it's my favourite drink.... Ahhh I am looking forward to that!

Only annoying thing is I've got another cold, having only just shaken off my Christmas one :( Hoping this one doesn't hang around so long at least. Doesn't seem too bad so far, so fingers crossed.

SickRose · 18/01/2017 14:46

I'm new to this thread. I had a really horrible day yesterday with vomiting and kept nothing down. I ended up in hospital overnight on iv fluids and have been told I have hyperemesis. They gave me a cyclizine injection last night as my tablets hadn't been staying down but this morning have told me to go back to using the tablets. I'm worried it will happen again as my nausea normally hits from waking. Has anyone got any tips on how they keep their meds down?

Southlondon321 · 18/01/2017 15:05

Hi sickrose, sorry you have to join us. How many weeks are you?

I kept mine down by drinking with cold squash and basically meditating the gag reflex down. I have lost many doses but if you see them come out I believe you can re-take them. Please double check that!!!!
Also, I don't move after for ages. Make sure you are off sick from work if that applies to you until it settles down. Best of luck. Also get a sick bucket, it makes a big difference to vomiting from the comfort of wherever you are at the time.

Hope that helps

SickRose · 18/01/2017 15:39

Thanks south. I'm 9+5. I was 4 weeks when I started getting the vomiting and nausea and it's just been getting worse. I was off work last week and that when I was put on the cyclizine. The relief was incredible and for a few days I felt human! But then I couldn't keep the tablets down. Yeah I'm not sure what to do about work now. In two weeks I've managed to be there for a day and a half and was vomiting for most of it. Not sure if I should just admit defeat and get signed off for a bit.

Southlondon321 · 18/01/2017 16:06

I got signed off at 13 or 14 weeks for 2 1/2 weeks, worked 4 weeks and then took leave for Xmas. Before that had at 1 week off leave around the 6-7 week mark and then at least 1 day off a week on sick or leave until I was signed off. (The holy grail of 12 weeks didn't come until about 18 and then still medicated and have nausea!!)
That was way too complicated. But trying to say that best thing is to do what ever is best for you and the rest will help.
Also go back to your GP and get something alongside cyclizine. I have metrochlopromide but there are others (onadesetron & stemil). I found it hard to get down cyclizine at your stage and keep it down. Squash helps me (still at 20 weeks) as if it catches in your mouth the taste is awful!!!!! I remember someone saying they stuffed theirs into a biscuit or something. Absolutely get signed off and stay still for up to an hour after taking it. I still take it and then go back to sleep so it can work. So so sorry it's such a horrid time for you xxx

Melleebacca · 18/01/2017 16:47

Hi SickRose, you need to take your tablets and then lie very still. I'm on ondansetron, and they absorb quickly, but I still try and lie for half an hour after I take them. And take ALL the time off that you can, because the more you rest, the better you get.

Holly - my dentist won't touch me while I'm pregnant, unless I have an emergency. My teeth feel so bad that I think they're going to all fall out from acid etc.

Four - enjoy your new bed. I have to move out of our spare room this weekend so my stepmum can stay. Not looking forward to sharing a bed, I barely sleep without another body tossing and turning.

Having a really tough time with week 9. Lots of 🤢. From about 4pm every time I move, everything comes up. Go to sleep hungry and dehydrated. SIL asked me yesterday if I was sure this wasn't just normal Morning Sickness as I've managed to avoid IV fluids thus far.

Good luck everyone

Hollyhop17 · 18/01/2017 17:36

Sorry to hear that Melle. My family are a bit 'doesnt everyone get morning sickness'. It is very frustrating that people dont understand just how awful hyperemesis is.

Sorry to hear you've had to join us SickRose. I am 14 weeks today and without jinxing it, my nausea has been slightly better these past few days, hopefully there is light at the end of tunnel.

On a better note, my cervix has grown so they arent worried anymore. Hugs and waves to everyonem

fourcorneredcircle · 18/01/2017 18:09

Hi SickRose welcome to our not always so happy band... pull up a bucket :) sorry to hear you are struggling to even get the meds down. I second that whatever you try have it as cold and as flavourful as possible... along with the smallest sip you can manage to swallow the med in and then lie slow. When I was at my worst (funnily enough week 9) I found that i could manage to mush up some a cracker in my mouth and swallow the pill slipped inside the mush. Even now, liquid can be tough for me until the afternoon.

Today hasn't been a good day at all. I'd had three vomits by 9 am so called in sick (I'm only just back on a phased return) and went back to bed. Woke up sick again about 11:30 then decided to stay up so took up residence on sofa. At about 2 I was feeling fine (I often feel good by then) so I made a pint of squash and some beans on toast. After I finished eating/drinking I suddenly realised I was going to throw up... didn't make it further than the hall... thankfully laminate. Massive offload. Huge. Then had to clean up and mop... smell of cleaning fluid triggered another offload (thankfully made it to kitchen bin this time). Truly the most spectacular and awful vomit I've had in weeks. Out of the nose and everything.

20 weeks today. Nice present...

Holly I'm pleased for you and your cervix (Grin would never have ever thought I'd say that!)

Light sorry you're struggling with a cold again.

Holly I have so far cancelled and re-arranged dental appointments twice... including for yesterday (thank God I did based on today!). Going to try again mid Feb.

LucindaE · 18/01/2017 19:50

SickRose Welcome. Sorry you had to be admitted on Tuesday night. You've had lots of great advice already. I so agree, do get a sick note and try and get stronger meds. As you were admitted after you'd been taking the cyclizine, it surprises me they didn't add something else or substitute something else. Usual question. Have you got kesostix to check for the early stages of dehydration, available from any chemists? Do you find tinned fruit or its juice any good, or chocolate milkshake (some swear by the non dairy sort) elderflower water, ice cubes, sips of flat coke or ice lollies? Some find cuppa soup helpful, and cheap ice cream, jelly or slices of frozen melon or nibbles of crisps. A dreadful diet, I know, but it's a question of what you can stomach if anything.
fourcorneredcircle Sorry about such a nasty day. I'm glad you had two days free of the bile run. You must have done that dash countless times - oh dear.
Pip As ever Mother Hen says, 'don't rush back'.
Hollyhop Good news about your cervix growing, and that your sickness is slightly better.
SouthLondon Sorry about headache.
LightTripper Pear drops sound good. I used to swear by old fashioned barley sugar, too.
Waves to IAmSerious SouthLondon Melleebacca and everyone.
