I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi pip, nothing a stupid question ever! ... unless they are line most likely hehehe. The doc suggested the heartburn one for me and it has made an absolute difference. Because that element of the discomfort is removed and it does mean less sick because heartburn has always made me sick generally (I'm a complicated gluten free person due to gastro problems!!... you can imagine my delight at HG!)
Def ask for it because you can get it free with your medical expemption. But you can buy in pharmacies.

Southlondon321 · 02/01/2017 14:34

Also, non-HG friend prescribed heartburn meds at 28 weeks as it was flaring up for her and has really helped.

Southlondon321 · 02/01/2017 14:36

Lol sorry above I meant to say 'mine', not 'line'!

Southlondon321 · 02/01/2017 14:39

I even tried the liquid pregnacare and that was best compared to tasting blood because of the metallic iron ... but orange flavoured!!! That caused some serious projectile!! It was my husband that found the small folic acid in Superdrug by accident as I was worried I wasn't getting any of it down at all.

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 02/01/2017 14:57

light sorry to hear about your MIL, I hope you got the help you needed in the end

pip I was the same, back to work in September, then off in November with sickness. Not ideal, but I couldn't carry on. Back now though.
Salt and vinegar French fries were my go to. You can dissolve them in your mouth in bad 'no chewing' days, that and tinned peaches.

south good luck at work tomorrow. Uber sounds like a good plan
I have been advised to take FA and Vit D throughout. But I have Crohn's disease so I dispatched it's a bit different

jammyjay · 02/01/2017 21:52

Evening All,

Am not looking forward to going back either. This holiday has raced by and most of it I didn't enjoy because of sickness 🎻
We made the long drive from Scotland to London this morning and it was a very unpleasant journey at first with me spending quality time with my sick bag, my toddler looking Hmm at me as if I was a weirdo and my DP trying to keep everyone's spirits up! I was so happy to get home!

Interestingly, my sister told me that masturbation is a good "cure" for morning sickness! I told her that masturbation was literally the last thing on my mind! But it did give me a chuckle Grin. Has anyone else heard that?

Anyway, good luck to those of us back to work tomorrow. I hope it goes well for all Flowers

LucindaE · 02/01/2017 22:00

LightTripper Sorry to hear your mil is unwell. How is the sickness now?
Pip I definitely agree with others - do try and get a sick note. Glad tinned peaches helped.
SouthLondon Mother Hen is always worried about sufferers going back to work too early. I hope it is a staggered return, sorry, I missed that bit. Re the vivid drams - I believe Vitamins B12 and B6 give people vivid dreams - but if you're not taking those (and goodness knows it's hard to retain vitamin pills with HG) maybe it could be the other meds? Some women do have very vivid dreams in pregnancy, too.
IamSerious Three course meal, threee children - my goodness, no wonder you feel exhuasted.

Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

JammyJay Sorry about the awful journey! A homeopath did recommend 'pleasuring yourself' to me in the early stages of a migraine. Never heard of it for Hyperemesis, though! Wink A way to avoid getting pregnant and suffering Hyperemesis in the first place, I suppose - if used instead of marital relations..

Morning! 18 weeks today! On my way to work. It's been OK (touch wood!!) even got mascara on. Hair. It been washed since Saturday but never mind lol. I'll try and make an effort to do it tonight. Got an ongoing pain under my right boob but a bit lower down. Been a week now. Can feel baby a lot more last night and today. Waiting for something husband can feel. Got oven pizza for dinner tonight. No frills but will be fed.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Hope everyone has a good day!!

I did read once that orgasms can make you feel a bit sick when have HG as it sends a surge of hormones around your body. Not sure on validity of study. I would say anything worth a try to ease sickness!!!

Pastiemaid · 03/01/2017 09:45

Happy new year everyone :)

Hi south, I'm 17 weeks and still on the folic acid, as the drs didn't think I absorbed enough in my first trimester.

A week after I've stopped the steroids I'm being sick again, and taking ondansatron and metaclopraride, one for which is giving me awful headaches all day. At least I had a bit of a break over Christmas!

We told everyone at home this Xmas about the pregnancy, I got 'eat a cracker in the morning' advice from my lovely gran who I don't think gets it, and lots of 'arent you thins!' grr.

Welcome to the newbies, hope you get all the support you need here :)

LightTripper · 03/01/2017 10:22

Hello South! I always have weird dreams in early p/g: I guessed it's just due to not sleeping properly ... or maybe the drugs?

No talk of inducing early other than for age reasons (I'm over 40 so won't go past 40 weeks). I was induced at 42 weeks with DD and she was showing no signs of moving by herself so my working assumption is they'll induce me a coupe of days before 40 weeks (I kind of hope so - lots to get done first!)

Sickness is much much better now. Just a dull background annoyance, no more than that. So just a slog, but not horrific at all - not front of mind the whole time like it used to be! I just feel gently hung over the whole time (which I think is what lots of people's experience of "peak MS" is like!)

Thanks for the support re: MIL. I think things are going to get easier to manage now everybody is back at work and back from hols, at least on the medical side. We are getting there slowly: it just isn't going to all get fixed overnight.

whoateallthejaffacakes · 03/01/2017 12:41

can i join you all? diagnosed with HG & i'm almost 9wks. only sick twice so far today but been unable to stomach even water

CaptainWarbeck · 03/01/2017 12:48

Hello who of course you can join us. Welcome to the club that no one wants to be in as someone said to me when I signed in!

Sorry things are so tough at the moment. Lots of people seem to find water can be hard to stomach, but things like flat coke or ice lollies might be palatable and get some liquid in that way. Are you taking medication yet?

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 03/01/2017 12:57

Welcome who, I completely agree with the is lollies advice. And the juice from tinned peaches (kept in the fridge). I still can't manage water most of the time.
Orange calippos were a go/to on bad days. Worth a try? X

Pastiemaid · 03/01/2017 13:06

Hi who and welcome, although sorry you have to be here. I found the juice from tinned peaches bearable, coke and lemonade, and later when I could stomach tea I put lots of sugar in :)

LightTripper · 03/01/2017 13:45

Welcome who - sorry you are having to join us!

Another thing to try is "wet" food like tinned peaches, melon, cucumber or tomatoes: they have a lot of water in and I always found it easier to eat than to drink. Same principle with the lollies I think (plus ice-cold can really help). I also found fizzy drinks easier than flat but I think that's probably unusual.

Are you on any meds/have you discussed meds with your doctor? It may be a good idea, particularly if you are struggling to take on fluids.

Southlondon321 · 03/01/2017 14:29

Hi Who
Welcome! I drink squash only ... my first tri flavour I hate now so don't drink your favourite! I lived off toast and chips and ribena until 14 weeks. Get medicated. My magic cocktail is cyclizine, metochlopromide and ranitidine (last one is for heartburn).

Work going ok. Had a horrid email from director over Xmas who is back in tomorrow. Trying to ignore and get on with job. Leaving at 5

Hope all going well today x

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 03/01/2017 14:31

Another top fluids tip for who I found using straws for all drinks helped a lot. No idea why. Xx

Southlondon321 · 03/01/2017 15:05

I agree with straws xx

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 03/01/2017 15:18

south glad it's not just me. DH tells me I look silly using straws for my drinks, but it really does help. X

Melleebacca · 03/01/2017 16:20

Straws help to get small amounts of water into the stomach by by-passing the tastebuds.

Welcome who! I think everyone else has given you great advice so far.

To all those heading back to work, be careful and know your energy levels. HG is so much worse when tired. It will flare up again if you push yourself too hard. I was off for 4 months with DD, and the last day I threw up happened to be my first day back at work as I ended up pushing myself too much.

Not much happening here. Hubby has another week off work and I'm a little scared of it just being me and DD during the day as I can barely get off the sofa and she's so active!

Still only at the one day of vomiting, looks like juice is a trigger. At one ondansetron a day, but might need to boost that to two next week. I reckon I'm 6w along but I'm so hopeful that I'm further along Smile

fourcorneredcircle · 03/01/2017 16:27

Welcome who, pull up a bucket. Water is hard for most of us but you've had lots of good suggestions. I'm 18 weeks tomorrow but my main AM fluid intake is ice lollies still. Then in the afternoon I move on the strong black currant squash, and in the last few days weak black tea with lots of sugar (South we seem to have go to fluid flavours in common!). I still don't cope well with plain water. I was just on ice lollies for a long time. When I was about 12 weeks my desperate mother bought just about every type of drink she could from the local corner shop and made me try them all. I vomited most of them straight back up BUT it did put me on to strong black currant squash and once I found that I found it easier to drink. Have you tried ice cold bottled water? The smell of tap water was heinous to me for a couple of months and made me retch... I found the bottled water easier to sip for that reason. Confused. No one has mentioned cuppa soups yet - some people found them really good. I had success with my own home made stock cube and couscous version too!

south I hope that mascara is waterproof...! Haha, well done for putting make up on. And... slightly dirty hair holds a style better anyway! Sorry your director sent an awful email... only 30 mins until 5...

Light I've been describing how I feel in relation to hangovers too - people seem to get it. Some days are horrific student snake bite and black, mine sweeping and cheap vodka days... others are shouldn't have had those shots but I'm over it by the afternoon and I'll probably have another tequila tomorrow days... other days (the good ones) are shouldn't have sat in the sun and had that extra pint of cider days...

Pastie my MW this morning said I could stop taking FA. She asked if I'd tried pregna care but wasn't surprised when I said I didn't have much success with errr... product retention. She said Vit D was the one thing she thought I really ought to keep up.

Jammy now, about this errrr, self administered HG treatment. I think that since you brought it up you should be the first to report back... just kidding... that just might actually be the first instance of TMI on the HG forum! Grin

whoateallthejaffacakes · 03/01/2017 17:21

thankyou all for the advice. have been prescribed cyclizine* 50mg upto 3 a day, is that common/ok? sending dp out to get it shortly as felt too unwell earlier to hang about the pharmacy of 30 to wait on it & dry heaved the whole way home. will try straws. managed a few sips of flat sprite, tap water goes "off" too quickly or something, if it sits any length of time its like as if its been left all night, weird how water has a taste/smell to it. managed to eat a small biscuit & two mouthfuls of pasta, hoping it stays down. have calippo icelollies in but cant open til 2yr old goes to bed or they'll have a meltdown

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2017 17:23

guess masterbation is meant to take your mind off other stuff, ie throwing up Grin

Southlondon321 · 03/01/2017 17:32

Who you sound like you have done everything great today. Hope it stays in. Most of us are on your cyclizine dose only topped up with something else. If you don't feel better by Friday then go back and get metrochlopromide, stemil or ondasetron as an additional drug. I loathed the latter two. Also, rest!!!! Sleep. Get netflicks!!

Thanks for tip Mellee. You have reminded me not to get tired. Just eat and drink what I can and when. But sleep/ rest too. In uber home now. It's expensive compared to bus/train but means it's a shorter day and less stressful for me.

Oh dear! What we put ourselves through to earn our wages. Very much weighing up the stress vs outcome but I did used to enjoy work!! .... I'm sure I did!

Four I swear we must be having one each of twins. Very very similar experiences. What is your cocktail of choice of meds? I still drink ribena but hate orange squash. Mostly drink Apple squash and got it at work too.

Heartburn been killing me last 4 nights. Even though taking something for it!!!!
