Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Lizzie you aren't being a nuisance. You're ill, properly I'll. can you ask to see a different GP. Take the NICE guidelines with you for support. Could your DP go with you for support to? You've been hospitalised you were so poorly, that should be enough evidence in itself!!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/12/2016 11:05

Captain 14w for me was a huge improvement
Tho still sick but went to evenings

Then again better at 20w tho hit a blip 23/24w and sick again

LIZZIE go and see doc. Why the clinic didn't give you anything to take home is beyond me

Lucy .... we are waiting ..... tho obv we don't expect you to update today .... tomorrow maybe 😬

I'm 25w today - whoop tho means I've 15w to go and thats almost 4mths which is forever

Sneezypeasy · 15/12/2016 12:09

Lizzie - I just want to echo others in saying please get to a doctor. Don't feel like a nuisance, it's their job to help people who are ill (and you sound very ill) I am in shock that they haven't given you any medication.

If you can't face doctors, at least get yourself some ketosticks (available in most pharmacies) so you can monitor your dehydration yourself (you just wee directly onto little test strip and compare colour it goes to the side of the box). I actually found it quite empowering that I was in control of when I tested rather than rushing to GP every time I was worried about dehydration. If ketones are 3 or more then phone hospital early pregnancy unit or maternity assessment directly and bypass GP and a&e (the number should be in your notes, they told me in hospital they only send you to GP first to get ketones reading, so can go straight there if you already have it), if ketones are normal then you can relax a bit and take care of yourself at home and keep monitoring in case things get worse.

When I was struggling to keep down fluids I made up a solution of oral rehydration salts (diarolyte or similar) and just sat sipping that (took me an hour to drink half a glass, but was something at least).

I hope you start to feel better soon.

Southlondon321 · 15/12/2016 12:14

Lizzie I feel for you so much. Just drink as much as you can and eat things that contain fluid like the peaches, melon, cucumber (do as I say and not as I do!! I've seriously not eaten any of those things because I don't want them). However you NEED to go back to the doc. Phone for emergency appointment and ask for a different doctor. Who cares if you are nuisance!! You are genuinely unwell. I wouldn't manage A&E.... I was sick outside the antenatal clinic!
Anyway, go if you can - it might avoid a hospital visit. Also get ondansetron... don't waste time with the rest!

Sneezypeasy · 15/12/2016 12:43

captain no need to apologise for rant, that is what this thread is for. I found 12 weeks emotionally really difficult, there is that hope there that all this will end soon and it's pretty crushing if it doesn't. It seems to differ for everyone, I have heard 14 and 20 weeks mentioned a lot, my GP reckons 18 weeks. From what I understand most women see some improvement in second trimester.

And there are exciting stages of pregnancy coming up for you soon e.g. hearing heartbeat for first time at midwife appointments, feeling those first kicks, seeing baby again at 20 week scan. I keep the 12 week scan photo close to hand to look at when I am feeling down, good to remind myself of why I am feeling like this.

I have found the phrase "this too shall pass" useful for all stages of pregnancy and parenting!

I am now 13+5 and slowly starting to feel more human again, still a long way to go but definitely progress.

Waves to everyone else, I really must get off Mumsnet and do something with my new found energy!

Lizziedoll · 15/12/2016 13:33

Do you find some days are worse than others? Or some times of day even? I'm really confused because I can feel so unwell I can't stomach water or leave my bed but then feel ok for a few hours, lots of energy, no nausea etc? This is my first pregnancy so all this is so new and I'm clueless!

LucindaE · 15/12/2016 13:50

Just back. Lizziedoll Things can vary from day to day, but we are all very concerned about you being very ill and unmedicated. Don't feel you are a nuisance; it's awful they discharged you without meds, as others say. Do go to the GP's and say you haven't been able to keep water down for 24 hours. i don't want to be a bossy, nagging Mother Hen and i know I said it earlier, but do go to the dr's as an emergency, or A and E, or an early pregnancy unit, whichever is easiest...

Pastiemaid · 15/12/2016 13:54

Hi Lizzie, I agree with the others, it sounds like you are dehydrated and really need to see a dr and to have a drip. And I can't believe they haven't given you any more drugs! How ridiculous, as if anyone can deal with hyperemesis without them.
My sickness tends to come and go alot. One time before I went to hospital I was fine all morning then spent all evening throwing up and couldn't keep water down atall. I was in hospital for three days after.

Hello Captain, I know exactly what you mean about the 'drug fog'! I'm finding it so hard to concentrate on the tv or reading so I can't do much to pass the time. I'm in ondansatron, metachlopramide and prochloprazine. Not sure what's causing it because I've taken all those drugs individually and felt fine.

It gets so lonely because I can't work and my partner is at work all day. Im so in awe of all of you working/ leaving the house even with hyperemesis! This thread is full of troopers Smile

Lizziedoll · 15/12/2016 14:32

Thanks everyone, I kept down two glasses of water and two slices of brown toast and peanut butter. Not a lost cause, then! Wink I will go to the hospital if I get really unwell again.

Lucy I'm new to this thread but congrats all the same. Enjoy not being sick Smile

LucindaE · 15/12/2016 17:30

Lucy How wonderful. A good weight, too! SmileGrin FlowersStarBrew
There have been several women on here, who unlike you didn't have a high pain threshold, but who found the labour strangely painless. They often had suffered really badly. Goodness knows what that means...You were wonderful throughout. Welcome to the Pink Castle.
CaptainWarbeck I hope you feel less desperate than this morning, sorry, I missed your post. I think almost everyone has an improvement in the second tri, somewhere between the 15 and the 20 week; it sends to be later than with MS although I have known a very lucky few see it at 12 weeks, that is rare on here. Even with nasty ms it is common to suffer up to 16 weeks from what I've seen, for all that magic 12 doctors speak of.
Anyway, almost nobody suffers as much as in the first tri, even if they have the misfortune to be one of the minority who suffer throughout.
On slogans, I always suggest 'This Too Will Pass' ; in eastern the story the the wise man (are there any? sorry! there must be) gave that as a mantra a king which would cover both the best and worst of times.
Blondes Mother Hen is what I answer to, anyway! Was it you who braved Chinese, or was that SouthLondon?
Squeezypeasy Great advice.
How is Pastiemaid LightTripper IAmSeriousAndDon'tCallMeShirley* and everyone?
I'm glad Lizziedoll is feeling a bit better.

MotherofPearl · 15/12/2016 18:49

Huge congratulations Lucy, that's wonderful news, I'm delighted for you! Lovely names you've given him too. Welcome to the Pink Castle - do pull up a comfy chair, put your feet up and enjoy eating all food without having to think about what it might be like on the way back up!

happydays00 · 15/12/2016 18:54

lucy huge congratulations! Amazing that you don't feel sick, hoping your hair grows back equally fast as well!!

I just popped on to say hello to all and to see how everyone is doing! I have an awful cold but still, even with a 2 week old, feel significantly better than I did whilst pregnant! Just remember: this too shall pass, it is only
temporary - and at the end of all of this is the greatest reward FlowersFlowers

Lizziedoll · 15/12/2016 19:01

How is everyone doing? Don't want to jinx it but I haven't been sick since lunchtime Smile but of course now I'm worried it means I'm about to miscarry (this is my second pregnancy, miscarried my first in July). You can't win, can you?!

CastleFeck · 15/12/2016 21:14

Congratulations Lucy, fantastic news. Hope the pink castle is as lovely as we all dream!

LucyHMK · 15/12/2016 21:54

Thank you, ladies!

We had a little pre birth chat about how he owed me a good sleeper who latched on instantly after 9 months of vomiting - so far so good! 👍🏻

He loves the swaddle pod I bought him, highly recommend. He just instantly falls asleep in it. Looks like a little pea pod 😍

moonoverthewater · 15/12/2016 22:23

Congratulations Lucy!!!!

Southlondon321 · 16/12/2016 09:58

Huge congrats Lucy.

I'm feeling terrible today. Massive ondansetron headache. Going to have to stop taking it again. I'll ask about dissolvable tablets on Wednesday when I go back to the doctors.

This head is so bad. It's hard to swallow tablets. Struggled down cyclizine at 7am and went back to sleep but need paracetamol now. Argh!!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/12/2016 10:06

Lucy. Fab news 💙💙💙💙 glad he is behaving and yah for not feeling sick

I'm 3rd to the pink castle 😍😍😍😍

It was me with the CHINESE but after writing post yesterday I then had a puking day. Lost breaker driving over to see my dad for lunch. Coop bags my best friend again

Had lunch and 15m later lost it in disabled loo - lol clean but dusty behind and on floor and then CHINESE kinda hopes would be better. Didn't really think about it and had rice ......

You know my views of rice and even tho sure if I hadn't had rice I probably would have been sick but yes every fucking last grain appeared 😷😷😷

When will I learn. Silly thing is that I felt fine yesterday and thought as had been sick on and off all eeek yesterday would have been a no sick day .....

Last xmas meal tonight - had 4 to go to - I have lost all 3 meals so what's the betting tonight's will appear ......

Lizzie yes you can have good times. I was always poorly early am till noon but then 1/2pm a lot better for 14w the. Swapped to felt ok daytime and I'll evening

If you are sick again please go and seek help

Weird how some doctors are supportive (like mine) and others aren't - I rang gp about my fragmin as hadn't come in (dvt years ago so have to jab daily while pregnant) and I mentioned low on tablets but enough to last me to new year and he said I would bung another prescription thro and now have an extra months of sickness pills

Bless him

LucindaE · 16/12/2016 12:56

Lucy That's wonderful. Grin
Blondes Rice - Agh, poor you! Envy
RobberBride How are things?
Lizziedoll Probably it's just a few good hours; everyone is like that, and if you've had an mmc it's all the more unnerving to get a break. How are things today?
happydays Sorry about cold. Glad things are so good generally with Baby Happy.
Waves to MotherofPearl and everyone...

SouthLondon I meant to say, that's awful about the splitting headache. I had awful migraines up to week sixteen, and I do sympathize, they make the sickness twenty times as bad! It's too bad if they're so severe that you can't take Ondansetron.
